Nairaland / General / Why I Offered My Last Child For Money Rituals – Father by greatmanbeatles: 10:05am On Jul 29, 2023
Blames his action on poverty.

One Poni Bada has shed more light on the circumstances surrounding his decision to use his nine-year-old son for money rituals.

The 50 –year-old Beninese farmer had left his country home for Nigeria with his unsuspecting son.

Three other men: Ige Koselu, Benjamin Balovi and Segun Shile, accompanied the farmer to a herbalist’s place in Owode area of Ogun State, where the money ritual was to be carried out.

The trio contributed N100,000 needed to start the ritual process, with a consensus to have their share of the proceeds when the ritual is successful and money start to roll in.

But that was not to be, as a team of policemen from the Zone 2 Command, Onikan Lagos, who acted on intelligence, swooped in, stormed the herbalist’s shrine and effected the arrest of all the suspects, while the would-be sacrificial lamb was rescued.

Crime Guard learned that the nine-year-old boy, Agbe, was brought from Benin Republic in May, 2023, to work in a farmland where he was paid N5,000. A month after, his father was said to have called his contact in Nigeria, Benjamin Balobi, complaining that the money paid to his son was too small compared to the farm work.

Father speaks

Explaining how he came up with the idea of using his son for money rituals, the father of the boy, Bada, said, “I have ten children from three wives. The situation of things kept going from bad to worse. I could not feed my children. I then decided to use my last child, Agbe, for a money ritual, so that I could train other children and have better living conditions.

“In May 2023, I left my home town in Jakotome, Benin Republic for Nigeria, to visit my brother, Benjamin Balobi, at Ilaro, Ogun State, who earlier told me he was doing well as a farmer and that the owner of a farmland was looking for labourers. That was how I brought Agbe to Nigeria to work.

But the thought of using him for a money ritual came up when I realized that the money paid as salary to my son was very poor. I told Balobi to help me get a herbalist that would help me with the money rituals, he said he knew no one but promised to help me find a herbalist who might have information on it. He informed Ige Koshelu (one of the suspects) who found someone that promised to take us to the herbalist’s place in Sango. But we were taken to another herbalist’s place in Owode, where we were arrested”.

The Deal

Also speaking, one of his accomplices, Segun Shile, a commercial motorcyclist, said four herbalists earlier contacted declined engaging in money rituals sacrifice. He expressed regrets, saying, “If I had known, I would have withdrawn. We were warned by the herbalist I took them to at Owode, Ogun State not to use the boy.

When I called the herbalist on the phone, he said there was nothing like money rituals. Few days later, he invited me to bring the person that would be used for the rituals. Immediately he sighted the boy, he stated categorically that the child’s head was too strong to be used for rituals.

He however demanded N100,000 to take to another herbalist who would perform the rituals.

“Three of us: Balobi, Koshelu and myself, who accompanied the father of the boy there, then went outside to discuss how to raise the money. Balobi brought N50,000, and Koshelu and I added N25,000 each. We told the boy’s father not to pay since he was donating his son for the ritual. The agreement was for him to give us out of what would come out of the process. When we handed the money to the herbalist, he picked up his phone and called someone. To our surprise, the next thing we saw were policemen”.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Command, AIG Muhammed who Ali confirmed the arrest of the suspects and rescue of the minor, said the latter would be taken to a juvenile home at the end of investigation.

The actress narrated how she entered the wrong bus on her way back from her boss's office.

Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode tells vividly how she nearly became a victim of kidnapping due to her excessive desire for money.

Taking to her Instagram, the actress described how she entered a car while leaving her boss’s office years ago without realizing she was seated next to a ritualist.

They had allegedly said that someone had left cash in the boot and had asked if she would be interested in sharing the cash with them, to which she had responded positively.

They took her somewhere and asked her to bring her mother’s gold.

“I have someone who helps us to wash clothes, when the rope for sunning cut, I gave him money to get a new one, but he stayed long which kept us all worried.

When he returned, he narrated how he entered a bus where he almost got scammed.

I remembered I had a similar experience when returning from her boss’s office years back, I entered a bus where they claimed someone left money in the boot and they wanted to share it.

Unknowingly to me, these people were ritualists. When we got to the location of sharing the money, they asked me to bring my mother’s gold”, she said.

Nairaland / General / Kano Governor Pledges To Complete Abandoned Projects In 44 Lgas by greatmanbeatles: 2:34pm On Jul 28, 2023
The Kano State Government has vowed to complete the five-kilometer dual carriageway projects in the 44 local government areas of the state abandoned by the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The Commissioner for Works, Housing and Infrastructure, Marwan Ahmad, stated this while receiving the new leadership of the State Correspondents’ Chapel during a courtesy call on Thursday.

Ahmad said the state government under the leadership of governor Abba Yusuf would complete the road projects to facilitate human and vehicular movements within the local government headquarters.

“The state government will do everything possible within the limited resources to complete the road project to ease human and vehicular movements,” Ahmad said.

According to him, the state government was also determined to reopen the 26 schools that were closed down by the immediate past administration.

He said the state government found it necessary to reopen the schools given their contribution to the social and economic development of the state.

“Most of these schools used to provide job opportunities to our teeming unemployed women and youths,” the commissioner said.

He said some of the schools included Informatics Institute, Kura, Sports Institute, Karfi, Skills Acquisition Centre Gabasawa, and Poultry Institute, Makoda, among others.

“So, the government has started serious work and is making an effort to restore the lost glory of the state,” the commissioner added.

The immediate past government had accused the administration of Rabi’u Kwankwaso of leaving a liability of over N54.4bn for the five-kilometer road projects across the 44 LGAs.

Ganduje was also the deputy governor and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration.

Health / 14-year-old Girl Divorced By Husband For Allowing Male Doctor To Attend To Her by greatmanbeatles: 12:09pm On Jul 28, 2023
Adamu, who has over 15 years of engaging and advocating for an increase in the production of nurses and midwives in the country, insisted that governments, especially state governments need to take up the responsibility to produce their health workers as according to her, “there is no short cut about it.”

“A 14- year old Fulani girl in Katsina State delivered and had difficulty with delivery, so we had to take her to the hospital and after the delivery, the husband divorced her because she was attended to by a man. This young girl was divorced all because she was attended to by a man during delivery,” she lamented.

The women’s rights activists lamented that Nigeria was producing medical doctors far below its need.

“There is a shortage of health workers despite the production. We are producing health workers far below our needs. Our average population growth is 3.2, but our annual production of nurses and midwives is 2.6, so definitely, there is a gap.

That is the latest data available that could be accessed,” she added.

Nairaland / General / 33-year-old Mother Convicted Of Murdering 12-week-old Son by greatmanbeatles: 3:00pm On Jul 27, 2023
A mother has been found guilty of the murder of her baby son who suffered injuries consistent with being shaken and striking his head on a hard surface.

Elodie Goncalves, 33, told a 999 call handler 'My son is dead, he's not moving', prosecutor Karim Khalil KC told a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Mr. Khalil said paramedics who attended Goncalves' flat in Harlow, Essex, at around 10 am on August 19 2020 found 12-week-old Malik Goncalves dead.

'While the flat was being examined, several empty bottles of wine were found both inside and outside in the communal gardens,' Mr. Khalil added.

He said the prosecution case was that Goncalves assaulted Malik 'violently by shaking him and by striking his head against one or more hard surfaces, causing multiple fractures and most importantly traumatic brain injuries'.

The prosecutor said a social services safety plan, signed by Goncalves and Muritala Olaiya-Imam, who said at the time he was the boy's father, was in place.

He said: 'Subsequent DNA tests have revealed he was not [the father].'

The plan had stipulated that Goncalves, who has mental health issues, was not to drink alcohol, was not to be left alone with her child and Olaiya-Imam was to contact police if Goncalves was under the influence of alcohol.

Mr. Khalil said that when emergency services attended the flat on August 19, Olaiya-Imam was not there but arrived later.

Goncalves, formerly of Joyners Field, Harlow, denied murder but was found guilty following a trial, Essex Police said.

She was also found guilty of assaulting an emergency worker who was trying to help Malik, the force said.

Olaiya-Imam, whose address cannot be reported for legal reasons, denied allowing the death of a child by leaving Malik alone with his mother, but was found guilty, Essex Police said.

Mr. Khalil said he 'was or ought to have been aware of that risk' and 'he should have been there to protect'.

Both defendants denied cruelty to a child, which Mr. Khalil said related to 'older injuries' found when Malik was examined after his death, and both were found guilty, police said.

They were also found guilty of an act intending to pervert the course of justice, which Mr Khalil said related to a urine sample that Goncalves was asked to provide while at the hospital after Malik's death.

Mr. Khalil said the sample was 'contaminated', adding that urine from both defendants was found in it.

'We say their act to corrupt that sample was done to interfere with the police investigation,' Mr. Khalil added.

He said that a back calculation on a blood sample from Goncalves estimated that at 10 am on August 19, she was around one-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit.

There were also 'constituents of cannabis' in the blood sample, Mr. Khalil said.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Truss, who led the investigation, said afterward: 'The death of a young child is and will always be immensely tragic and our thoughts remain with Malik's wider family at this difficult time.

'Malik died at the hands of those who should have cared for him most.

'I hope that today's verdict will bring some comfort to the family.

'This lengthy, sensitive investigation was difficult for all those involved but I am proud that everyone acted with determined professionalism and focused on what mattered - securing justice for the death of their defenseless baby son.'

The pair will be sentenced at a later date.

Sports / 16-year-old Casey Phair Becomes Youngest Player In Women's World Cup History by greatmanbeatles: 2:29pm On Jul 25, 2023
Casey Phair on Tuesday became the youngest player to feature at a Women’s World Cup after coming on as a substitute in South Korea’s 2-0 defeat to Colombia aged 16 years and 26 days.

The striker was born in the United States and was called up by the country at youth level, but has now made her debut for South Korea.

She came on in the 78th minute in Sydney, besting the previous record set by Nigeria’s Ifeanyi Chiejine, who was 16 years and 34 days when she played at the 1999 World Cup.

Phair, born to an American father and a Korean mother, is the first player of mixed descent to make the senior South Korean women’s football squad.

South Korea’s English coach Colin Bell called Phair the future after his side started their World Cup with a toothless defeat where they mustered only five shots all game.

“She deserved to get the chance to play, she has trained well, as good as anyone,” said the 61-year-old coach.

“It is also a signal that that’s the future, she is the future.

“We need strong, fast players with physicality.”

Bell, who said on the eve of the match that he wanted to “safeguard” Phair from too much “hype”, hinted that he could give the teenager more time in their next match against debutants Morocco.

“She gives us energy and power and that is where we need to step up and every player needs to step up in the next game,” he said.

He added: “I wanted to throw her on to give her that experience.

“At least we made history today,” added Bell, referring to Phair’s landmark.

South Korea went down meekly to Colombia, conceding a penalty in the first half and then a second before the break when goalkeeper Yoon Young-gel made a mess of a shot by Linda Caicedo.

“I am very disappointed with the result and performance,” he said.

“The girls can play much better. At times they were too slow.

“We just did not create enough and our decision-making at times was not decisive enough.”

Nairaland / General / Suspended CBN Governor Emefiele Granted Bail By Federal High Court by greatmanbeatles: 12:20pm On Jul 25, 2023
Emefiele has been granted N20 million bail after six weeks in DSS custody.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was suspended after filing a bail application in connection with an alleged gun possession case. The Federal High Court in Lagos dismissed the Federal Government’s argument that it had not received a copy of the application.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo made a brief ruling on the matter and stated that there was proof that the government was served.

Joseph Dauda (SAN), one of Emefiele’s solicitors, filed the bail application.

Dauda requested that the court hold a hearing on the application for bail on self-recognizance, stating that his client had met all requirements for the application to be ready for hearing.

He noted further that the proof of service endorsed by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) was in the court’s file.

Dauda also asked the court to end the oppression of his client by the Department of State Security (DSS) who arrested him and hear the bail application.

But the government’s lawyer, a Deputy Director of Prosecution, Nkiru Jones-Nebo, told the court that she had not set eyes on the application as there is currently no AGF in the country after the tenure of the last administration lapsed.

She said, “We have scrutinized even through the agency the defendant is been detained but we could not find any.”

“I have not set my eye on this application. I am yet to receive and after we receive it, we would want to respond to it.

“With due respect to the court, we are seeking a date to enable us to respond both to the issues of law and the facts contained in the application which I am just seeing this morning.”

The arguments prompted Justice Oweibo to write a ruling where he dismissed the government’s objections.

At the time of this report, the court is hearing the suspended CBN Governor’s bail application.
