Integrity: Is It Becoming a Scarce Commodity?

I recently started working with a business owner. I won't mention the name of the business or even the industry, but one conversation with him has stayed on my mind.

He told me something that honestly shocked me.

He said he's currently on his eighth set of employees.

Yes, the eighth.

Why?

Because, according to him, every previous team eventually became involved in stealing from the business.

I'm not talking about one department.

From the **security guard** to the **cleaner**, the **receptionist**, the **cashiers**, and even the **manager**—they all allegedly found ways to siphon money or manipulate the system.

At one point, when the business was still handling large amounts of cash, they introduced additional controls. They even involved police officers to escort money from the office to the bank.

Yet somehow, money still disappeared.

The owner kept tightening controls.

The fraud simply became more sophisticated.

What shocked me the most was when he told me that two of his former managers were making almost **three times their official salaries** through fraudulent means.

Today, he's seriously considering shutting down the business.

Not because customers are lacking.

Not because the business isn't profitable.

But because he no longer knows who to trust.

That conversation left me asking myself a difficult question.

Do we have an integrity problem?

Every week we read headlines:

* Someone arrested for financial fraud.
* Someone caught trafficking drugs.
* A Nigerian convicted abroad for defrauding a government programme.
* Internet fraud making international news.

Then we complain that politicians are corrupt.

But where do politicians come from?

They don't fall from the sky.

They are products of the same society.

If someone is willing to steal ₦50,000 from their employer today, what guarantees they won't steal ₦50 billion if they become a public office holder tomorrow?

This isn't to say Nigerians are dishonest.

Far from it.

I've met incredibly honest Nigerians—people who would rather lose money than compromise their integrity.

The problem is that integrity often feels undervalued, while shortcuts appear to be rewarded.

And that's dangerous for any society.

A nation cannot develop when employers spend more time thinking about how to stop employees from stealing than how to grow their businesses.

Technology can reduce fraud.

Policies can help.

CCTV cameras can monitor.

Audits can detect.

But **no system can replace character.**

At the end of the day, integrity is what you do when no one is watching.

Maybe the question we should all ask ourselves isn't **"Why is Nigeria the way it is?"**

Maybe it's:

**"If every Nigerian behaved exactly like me, what kind of country would Nigeria become?"**

Unethical practices by employers are there too even if ur story is true. The amount of exploitation that is there is mind-boggling

Have you all noticed that since JAMB concluded the 2026 UTME screening exam, the portal has not been opened for result viewing and printing. I wonder why this delay for over 3 weeks now. Could it be because they want candidates to continue using the USSD channel that charges #50 so that they continue making money?

Quite a lot of candidates are awaiting the online viewing because the ussd doesn't work for them due to conflicting phone numbers in the system. If someone had written JAMB before and pergaps, lost his/ her phone number used in the registration, the portal is not designed to accept an update of the old number to a new one. Many have cried out to me on this development, which I believe JAMB should vehemently look into.

Claiming lives is not in accordance with their doctrine. It should be the last resort. Humans beings can change any time. People should do due diligence to understand their environments. Some environments simply dont tolerate mockery of revered figures. I was in places where I heard comments about Jesus, and I said thank God, you are here because in some places this will be considered blasphemous.

I heard a guy said Jesus himself got tired of preaching and dropped the cross. I know a kid who would always comment "wetin concern Jesus" every time someone called upon Jesus. In the US, in Holywood movies you hear all kind of exclamations with Jesus in it which are to say the least disrespectful.

When others became emotional about comments on their faith we call them extremists because we lax our rules and have no respect for the scripture. This is the problem facing Christianity. Under the guise of freedom, which is an infiltration of the west and fake saints nonsense and mockery of Jesus could be excused.

Well, other faith such as the Islamic faith don't take things this way. Destructions of a society or a religious community begins with subtle mockery and relaxation of rules obligated by God. We think we are smarter, live anyhow, or wait for scientific evidence to avoid harm. When the evidence appeared how do you deal with the damage that had been done?

Why come spew hate here on a simple post about faith. What's shared are akin to the 10 commandments of Moses, or any civil society.

Dont fight titles, fight principles. Say they're right here, wrong there. And let's have a dialogue not spewing trash

These groups aren't joke as they shown their capabilities in the past. Right now the aim is to wear down the aggressors alliance in terms of weapons, economy, etc.

Who's achieving what in these? The aim of US/Israel right now is degradation; you might say sabotage by attacking industries, universities, energy infrastructure, weapons storages.

It's all murky in some sense. The US/Israeli alliance aren't really doing well. It's the most unpopular war right now - meaning American population don't support it
