The former Barcelona midfielder was asked to evaluate the merits of his two ex-team-mates and, although he remains a fan of Neymar, thinks Messi is a step ahead at the current time. Chatting with Super Deportivo de Villa Trinidad, Xavi said of Messi and Neymar: “They’re totally different. I see Leo with great footballing maturity. He does everything well. Although the World Cup presents players with a chance to boost their market value, some of the main characters in the tournament haven’t managed to meet expectations. For every Ante Rebic and Benjamin Pavard success story, there are cases such as David De Gea, Thomas Muller, Gabriel Jesus and Robert Lewandowski, who didn’t reach their full potential. With two games remaining, there are still players who have the opportunity to shine and increase their market value in the ongoing transfer window. Increased value Benjamin Pavard He has been a key player for France so far in the tournament and Bayern Munich seem eager to sign him from Stuttgart. Juan Fernando Quintero In James Rodriguez’s absence – due to injury – Quintero hit the ground running and produced quality performances with Colombia. Lucas Torreira His World Cup displays have earned him a transfer to Arsenal, as Unai Emery sought to finalise the deal before the end of the tournament. Denis Cheryshev Although he wasn’t a starter for Russia’s debut at the World Cup, Cheryshev was the team’s best player, having scored four goals in five games. Other players such as Aleksandr Golovin, Hirving Lozano, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Maguire, Kieran Trippier, Ahmed Musa, Jo Hyeon-woo and M’Baye Niang, have also seen their market value rise with their performances. Decreased value David De Gea The Manchester United goalkeeper was a shadow of himself, as he managed just a single save in four games for Spain. Thomas Muller Germany didn’t qualify from the group stage and Muller mirrored his team’s underwhelming performance in the tournament. Gabriel Jesus He arrived in Russia as a Premier League winner and didn’t find the back of the net in any of Brazil’s games. Robert Lewandowski Although he was the top scorer in the qualifying round, the Bayern Munich striker didn’t score in any of his team’s three games.
