PHCN NOT 4 SALE Nigerian workers, under the umbrella organisation of the Joint Action Forum (JAF), the pro-Labour civil society partner in the Labour and Civil Society Coalition, took to the streets of Lagos yesterday to protest the planned privatisation of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). In a press release issued by the JAF, they described President Goodluck Jonathan's Roadmap on Electricity Power Reform as "another gigantic fraud meant to hand over another publicly owned enterprise (PHCN) to the looters' cousins and pirates called private investors." Dipo Fashina, the Coordinator of the organisation, while comparing Nigeria with other countries that have attempted to privatise some sectors of their economy, said that the publicly owned sectors of those countries were not completely sold out. "In those countries, they did not have to kill the public enterprises in order to make it work," he said. "In the context of Nigeria, the privatisation is entirely to kill the public property by selling public property to private hands. What we are saying is this, if you want your private companies to generate electricity, go ahead and do it but don't kill the Nigerian one in order for you to do that. In countries like Britain, they don't kill the public industry. The goal of privatisation in Nigeria is different. It is to transfer the wealth into the hands of a few. It was started by President Obasanjo and it is still going on." Revamping not privatisation He suggested a reformation of the electricity sector rather than leaving it to private ownership alone. "What they have to do is not to kill PHCN but to reform it," he said. "The workers should be there, other interest groups should be there that will see to the proper restoration of PHCN. We have an irresponsible government. We don't leave things like electricity to private hands alone." Abiodun Aremu, the Secretary of the JAF, said the workers are completely opposed to the privatisation because it has never worked in Nigeria. "We are opposed to the privatisation of the electricity sector," he said. "Government has a responsibility to ensure there is light for Nigerians; to ensure that what is publicly owned is not privatised because all cases of privatised public enterprises has been a disaster. Any privatisation of any sector brings increased suffering to Nigerians, brings collapse of industries and ensures underdevelopment of the country. Government must invest heavily on the electricity sector. In addition, the private sectors with licenses must be made accountable to produce and generate electricity. But not to handover to them what is publicly owned." Avoid unemployment PHCN provides a good source of employment for the common man which would be jeopardised if the electricity sector is privatised. This was the view expressed by Jacob Ishola, the Vice President of Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Electricity Employees. "Privatisation is a disease that is killing all Nigerian companies," he said. "They should not kill PHCN. PHCN is the last hope of the children of the common man. Where are the children of those that were working in NITEL today? Where are the children of those that were working in Nigerian Airways? When they sell all the rights of PHCN to the private sector to come and manage, they will now bring their brothers and relatives to come and work there and it will affect the children of the common man." Chude Achike, the General Secretary of National Intervention Group while presenting the views of his association, described the planned privatisation as "a game that is being played" adding that "less than 10 per cent of those companies that have been privatised are working optimally." An opposing faction However, another association, the Coalition of Residence and Business Associations of Nigeria, opposed the actions of the JAF. Their National Chairman, Abayomi Daodu, who was present at the rally, said that the JAF was wrong and were only conducting the rally for their own selfish interests. "It is not as if they really love Nigeria," he said. "What they are saying is that the federal government should pay them their severance money. That is what they have been clamouring for. They don't want to go the way of the NITEL staff who did not get their gratuity. If the federal government should come out with their gratuity today, they will all go to their house. The only panacea to this epileptic power supply is the outright sale of the power sector. Let them sell PHCN. We have tolerated them enough." |

US to review visa policy for Nigerians, may revoke others By Agency Reporter, Published: Wednesday, 27 Jan 2010 THE United States may soon begin rejection of Visa applications by some categories of Nigerians. Although a statement by the US State Department did not mention the categories that would be affected, it added that visas already issued to some people might be revoked. The plan, according to Empowered Newswire, a US-based Nigerian news agency, follows a directive by President Barrack Obama. The US State Department supervises American embassies worldwide. Empowered Newswire said on Tuesday that the embassies were advised to “review visa issuance and revocation criteria and processes with special emphasis on counter terrorism’. It is believed that this directive would be actively implemented in Nigeria and other 13 countries on the US terror watch list. Alongside the presidential directive, a US senator is also proposing that multiple visas be eradicated for Nigerians and the other countries on the terror watch list. However, the US Embassy in Nigeria, has been absolved of any wrongdoing in the handling of the Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian that attempted to blow up a US-bound aircraft. According to Ian Kelly, US State Department Spokesman, Embassy in Nigeria did everything they were supposed to do.” It was gathered that Obama’s directive was addressed to several US departments and agencies with different specific instructions and policy directions. But the State department instruction on visa is deemed one of the most crucial directives in the memo as it came first in a long line of departments and agencies. According to the presidential memo, Obama stated that those actions including the new visa restrictions and revocation which must take place immediately ”must be taken to enhance the security of the American people. The statement said, “The actions are necessary given inherent systemic weaknesses and human errors revealed by the review of events leading up to December 25th. “They also are required to ensure that the standards, practices, and business processes that have been in place since the aftermath of 9/11 are appropriately robust to address the evolving terrorist threat facing our Nation in the coming years.” |
