Politics / Alamieyeseigha Regains Freedom by hajifish(m): 12:41pm On Jul 28, 2007
The former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, on Friday regained his freedom, as the Nigerian Prison Service released him at 3pm.

former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha

Though the details of his release were not available as at press time, the ex-governor was said to be at his residence at Oba Akinjobi Street, GRA Ikeja, Lagos around 8pm.

Alamieyeseigha was taken to Ikoyi Prison on Thursday after Justice Mohammed Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Lagos convicted him on six out of the amended 33-count charge that was preffered against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

Confirming the release of the ex-governor, spokesman for the NPS, Lagos State Command, Mr Ope Fatinukun, told one of our correspondents on the telephone that Alamieyeseigha had been released, since he had completed his prison term.

He said, “ According to the prison rules and regulations, Alamieyeseigha has completed his prison term and has been released to go home.”

A source at the EFCC also confided in our correspondent that the ex-governor came to the commission’ s office after his release to pack his personal effects. He added that Alamieyeseigha later left the EFCC’s office for his residence.

The ex-governor’s journey to freedom began when he entered into a plea bargain with the EFCC and pleaded guilty to the financial crimes in court on Thursday. The judge thereafter sentenced him to two years imprisonment on each of the six-count charge, which were to run concurrently from the day of his arrest.

Since one year prison term amounts to eight months and Alamieyeseigha was arrested on December 9, 2005, the ex-governor had completed his prison term. The judge said that four properties, 2.29m pounds, N1bn shares in a commercial bank, N105m and $160,000 should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Sports / To Barca Fans Only-the Ten Commandments Of Barcelona by hajifish(m): 11:45am On Jul 09, 2007
The Ten Commandments Of Barcelona

In an attempt to rejuvenate the troubled Catalan side, controversial club president Joan Laporta has decreed to his players that Thou Shalt Not Act Up Or Miss Training. By introducing a system of Commandments to his players, he hopes to instill a new sense of professionalism in the Barca squad.

zoom - galleria There has recently been much talk of a new set of internal rules at Barcelona, but only now have full details emerged of how the blaugrana players must behave for the new season.

Fed up with indiscipline and squabbling last season - issues that may have contributed to Barca's narrow title loss - club president Joan Laporta has proclaimed a sort of 'Ten Commandments' that will apply to all players without exception.

Laporta has clearly been planning this for a while. In a June outburst that angered many players, he hinted at the proclamations yet to come. "We will not tolerate any bad behaviour," he frowned.

Edmilson and Deco were amongst those who responded with thinly-veiled disbelief, but now they have to obey the orders of the president as they are explicitly written in the form of "Commandments."

There are approximately ten of them, but most seem to be common-sense regulations about professionalism and training practices. All come into force on July 21 when the club returns to training - and they apply to all players equally.

The first order is that all players must be on the training ground 10 minutes before the day's session is to begin. No doubt circling Ronaldinho's name as he did so, Laporta also wrote that there are to be no unilateral "gym sessions" for those who opt not to train outdoors. The only time a player will be permitted to stay in the gym is if the medical staff instruct them to do so. Otherwise, all will train outside together.

Additionally, if a player does feel they have a reason to miss training, it must be communicated to the club two hours in advance of the next session. Punishment for those who break this rule, or - worse - those who cannot be located on training days, will be severe.

Next, there will be no more late nights on the town for Barca stars. Each player must be at home by 1am in order to afford them a full eight hours' rest before the next day's exertions, with training starting at 10:30am sharp. Lights-out when staying in hotels before away games will be at midnight.

The president hopes that, aside from the physical benefits of a full night's rest, such strict rules will help forge unity amongst a squad that all too often bickered last season.

In perhaps the most important commandment of all, insubordination is now strictly prohibited. Rumours persist that Eto'o wilfully refused to play as a substitute in the middle of last season - such stunts will be repeated at the player's peril.

Laporta clearly feels the players will benefit from his authoritarian style. While he's very unpopular with some of the fanbase, he argues that he gets results. Off the pitch, that may well be true - the number of official "partners" in the club rose to an all-time high of 156,336 this year.

Whether his approach will work with a large and disparate squad, however, remains to be seen.

Why Yar’Adua insisted on N70 - Aide
By Idowu Adelusi - 24.06.2007

AS the strike embarked on by the Labour enters its fifth day today, the Presidency has given hints why it would not reverse the pump price of petrol to the old price of N65 per litre.

The Labour, which had ordered workers to down tools indefinitely since last Wednesday over the hike in price of petroleum products by the Obasanjo administration, three days before its exit, is also, among other things, asking the Federal Government to reverse the sales of Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries and implementation, without delay, payment of 15 per cent salary increase.

While the Federal Government has met all the demands of Labour, except the pump price of petrol which it pegged at N70 per litre, Labour has vowed to continue with the strike until total reversal of the pump price of petrol.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media, Mr. Segun Adeniyi, in a piece he wrote on the NLC strike and made available to Sunday Tribune at the weekend, said it was in the long-term interest of the people for the Federal Government to peg pump price of petrol at N70 per litre, even though such a decision may be painful.

Mr. President also decided that since kerosene and diesel are more essential for the vulnerable elements of our society, prices of such products should be reverted to the old rates.

Adeniyi said, “the position of President Yar’Adua on the vexatious issue of petrol pricing may be painful, however, it is the responsibility of government to take hard decisions, provided they are in the long-term interest of the people.”

According to Adeniyi, the president is of the firm conviction that to reduce the fundamental problems “plaguing our nation to Obasanjo is not only self-serving, it is the usual recourse to such opportunism in the past that has landed us where we are today.”

President Yar’Adua, whom he said believes in the principles of late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola that ‘if you are running and looking back, you will fall,’ is of the opinion that any government policy that impacts directly on the welfare of the people must meet the criteria for the rule of law and public morality.

Adeniyi revealed that the economic reform programmes of the Yar’Adua administration, founded on the removal of inefficiencies in public institutions and introduction of genuine and durable improvements, were bound to hurt the people, citing N5 per litre differential in pump price of petrol.

Adeniyi stated that the president immediately considered the demands of the Labour on Value Added Tax (VAT), by inviting the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Ms Ifueko Omoigui and the Solicitor-General of the Federation, to brief him and thereafter discovered that hike in VAT was illegal because the law governing the implementation of this year’s budget was based on 5 per cent VAT as approved by the National Assembly Act.

Also on the issue of 15 per cent salary increase, Adeniyi stated that President Yar’Adua directed the Ministry of Finance and office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to work out details, adding that not withstanding government advice which was against payment, President Yar’Adua ruled that it was imperative for his administration to pay the increase.

Politics / Why We Called Off Strike - Labour by hajifish(m): 8:40am On Jun 24, 2007
i think the offered made to labour by faderal goverment good deal.

but we still deserved some explanation from Labour Advantage of the offers

Labour leaders Saturday night said they decided to suspend the four-day strike by workers over the recent fuel price increases following a personal intervention by President Umaru Yar‘ Adua.

The Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress called off the strike at the end of a meeting held with representatives of the Federal Government, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe.

According to them, the President personally wrote a letter to the leaders of labour making some fundamental commitments.

He promised not to re- view upward the new price regime of petroleum products in the next 12 months.

Besides, the President pledged to set up an expert committee to look in to pricing mechanism in the oil sector.

Another agreement was the setting up of an expert committee to examine the privatisation and concession, especially the recent sale of government equity in the refineries.

In the letter, Yar‘ Adua also narrated the suffering of the Nigerian people and the anguish with which he la- boured to resolve the indus- trial dispute:

The leaders held a joint press conference at the SGF‘s office where the communique was read.

Shedding light on the decision to call off the strike, the TUC president, Mr. Peter Esele said, ”This decision was based on the interven- tion by the President and the letter he has written. The President has said that we should place our trust and faith in him. And we intend to walk that all the way.”

The communique of the meeting reads:

”The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress held a series of meetings over organised labour‘s demand on the recent increase in the prices of petroleum product and VAT and the privatisation and concession of some national assets and the non payment of the 15 percent increase in the salary earlier promised. And as a conclusion of this concession, the following were agreed

upon:

1. The increase of the VAT rate from 5% to 10% is hereby revoked.-The VAT rate is now reverted to 5%

2. Government to set-up an expert committee to examine the pricing mechanism of petroleum products

and make recommendation bearing in mind the strategic nature of the products and the impact of the prices on the economy and the social

lives and the livelihood of Nigerians. Both the NLC and .the T.U.C will be represented on the committee.

.3. Government will setup an expert committee to examine the recent privatization and concession exercises, especially the sale of 61 % government equity in the refineries and the proposal for the power sector. The labour will fully participate in the work of this committee.

4. Government will implement the 15% salary increase

for the Federal Government employees with effect from the 1st of January 2007, The modalities for spreading the payment of the

arrears in the first quarter will be worked out by the government.

5. The N10 per liter increase in the prices of kerosene and diesel is reversed.

6. The N10 per litre increase in the pump head price of petrol is reviewed to N5 per litre. Consequently petrol will now sell at N70 per litre.

7. Government has assured that, there will be no review of this price level of N70 per litre for petrol for the next 12 months.

8. The ongoing NLC and TUC general strike is suspended with effect from midnight 23rd June 2007. All business premises, factories and public offices, shall now resume normal operations.

9. No staff or workers shall face any disciplinary action arising from their participation in the strike.

10. In the spirit of the strategic partnership between Government and labour initiated by president Umaru Yar;Adua in his letter of June

23rd 2007, to the NLC & TUC, both sides further agreed on the need for a mechanism for structured, proactive and routine interaction between government

and organised labour towards a development process.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and the Joint Action Forum on Wednesday ordered

workers to commence an indefinite strike after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum over workers‘ demands.

The demands included the reversal of the increase in Value Added Tax from N5 to NI0; the price of petrol from N65 to N75; diesel from 54 to 65 and kerosene from N54 to N65.

Others included a review of the sale of both Port-Harcourt and Kaduna refineries and the implementation

of the 15 per cent increase in the salary in the federal civil service.

But after initial talks with labour, the government reversed the increase on VAT; prices of kerosene and diesel.

However, labour rejected the decision of government to reduce the new price of fuel by N5 so that commodity will

now sell for N70 per .litre.

The Saturday meeting which was originally scheduled to begin at 7.30pm, was

delayed till 8.30 pm, about 15 minutes after the union leaders arrived.

It was apparent that the labour leaders, who included the NLC, and hoc presidents

and the secretary of NLC, Mr.John Udeh had harmonized their position before coming to the meeting which ended at l0.50pm. At the meeting,

the leaders were adamant on their position especially on the issue of petrol price before Yar‘ Adua‘ s letter was presented by Kingibe.

The decision of the NLC to suspend the strike did not go down well with the TUC leadership, a source said.

It was learnt. that Usele and other leaders of the TUC had scheduled a press conference for Abuja on Sunday to express a few reservations on

the agreement labour reached with the government.

Politics / Sales Of The Nation Refineries Do You Guys Sopport It ? by hajifish(m): 11:15am On Jun 22, 2007
Sales of the Nation refineries do you guys sopport it ?Yes or No and reasons.

To Me Yes,
reason,Many Nigerians holding a position in government Companies Are thieve ,they dont have any care for the companies.they only care for thier selffish interest and embazzle our money, Nigerians Managing the refineries embezzle our money and dont care to repair it back because is not thiers, they used the money for thier selffish interest and keep calling on the government to come and repair it for them so they can steal more money,i think is good thing for the goverment to sell it for private individual and give more people Lincesed to build new ones so that its will not be monopolised.
Many government companies have been paralysed by some greedy nigerian who want to be rich Fast like the Nigeria Railway,Nitel and Nigeria Airways. i heard we had about 5 national Carriers in late 70ties but when OBJ Came to Power 1999 None of the Carriers exist anymore, because the people managing it has embezzle the money and invest them oversea,i'm in support of the sales if posible the goverment should sell the railway system and orthers things or let thier be sharesholders.so that this stupid people will not run of down.

Any if anyone think selling it is not good wat are the reason.
