Hello VO,

I just got an update to my query and they said the receipt has been used and I have To make another payment. But that is false. That receipt has NOT been used to schedule any appointment. And now they're asking me to make another payment. This is very annoying - I am tempted to call it a scam. Even the dashboard shows no appointment has been made since the one of November 8. Payment was only made last week Thursday. What is going on?

Please i need help.

We have made payment and updated the information, but i cannot get to the point where i am able to schedule an appointment.

This is a snapshot of the dashboard. It seems we are being told her passport is at the embassy. But that is not true

Hello Halaphilip,

First, this is exactly why we are so vocal for applicants to not use visa agents. It sounds like "the dude who helped her" actually made it harder on her, so let us reiterate how important it is to complete your own form.

If the receipt number was already reused, then yes, she must reapply.

Regards,

Abuja NIV
Thank you. Actually, we did not use a visa agent. She got to the Visa venue an realized she did not have that confirmation of appointment page and while trying to get it printed from her profile, she ran into those business centre people that loiter around the Embassy who offered to help but ended up printing the wrong one.

Anyway, the main issue is we were told that since she could not attend the interview (because she did not have the right document), she needed to reschedule her appointment after three days using the same receipt number. But anytime we try to do that, it says the receipt number has already been used. It seems there is a conflicting signal and no one seems to know the right thing to do. We will probably end up paying another fee but it'll be nice to have these things cleared up.

you need to skip it and take a passport photograph with you to the embassy (The specify size)
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by halaphilip: 3:54pm On Nov 15, 2016
Pls how do you solve the passport photo issue? When i get to that point and upload a passport photo, it tells me that it passed quality standards etc. But when i click on "Next" to proceed to the Review section, it says there is an error with the photo and i cannot proceed.

Pls help.
TravelRe: U.S. Non-immigrant Visas: We’re Listening by halaphilip: 3:28pm On Nov 14, 2016
My sister was denied visa two months ago and reapplied last month.

The dude who helped her fill the application forgot to print the confirmation of appointment page. She subsequently printed the old one and took to the interview. of course she was turned back and given a notice that suggested she should reschedule without paying a new fee (see image 1). She only needed to use the same receipt number

She tried rescheduling on Saturday but was told the receipt number had been used before. We filed a complaint, attaching the notice from the Embassy and got a response this morning, saying the receipt number, having been used before, could no longer be used again. See image 2. This seems to contradict what the notice she got at the embassy says.

What can we do?

Hello Halaphilip,

If she answered "no" to a question when the true answer was "yes", then yes, it was the incorrect response.

The screenshot refers to Immigrant Visas, and your sister was applying for a non-immigrant visa.

We are not going to comment on why someone's visa was refused.

Regards,

Abuja NIV
Thanks. To be more direct, should the answer then be YES? In this case, she is my blood sister and she's applying for a non-immigrant visa

Bro you're right and they can wait just that the person waiting will not understand why she's waiting I will like to suggest if they can try again next month if possible.
Thanks both of you. I've already had the fee paid and I'll be submitting the application for her this week. I just wanted to be sure no mistakes were made when filling the DS160 the first time. Many thanks.

Well 214b means that the VO was not convinced that she would return home after her visit.
She must provide strong proof or it will be the same again.
ok, have to think of the evidence we have. Her first daughter is getting married on Dec 24 (partly why she's visiting) but she never got a chance to explain that. They asked basic questions that did make so much sense to me:

Q: Where are you going
A: Maryland, USA

Q: Who are you visiting?
A: My younger bro (gave my name)

Q: Does he have a child?
A Yes. One (i'm expecting the second)

Q: WHo is going to foot the bill?
A: My brother

Q: Do you have children too?
A: Yes. Two.

Q: How long do you intend to spend in the US?
A: Four weeks

VO: Sorry, you don't qualify for a visa.

Don't forget, these questions were in Yoruba through an interpreter. But none of these questions appear to me to prove she does not have strong ties to Nigeria. Is there something we did wrong?

You can not get much closer than Sister if you were both born to the same parents.

Note, you can not apply for her, she must submit the forms.

Did she state visiting Sister as reason, but state no relatives?
That is probably enough for rejection.

What was the exact rejection code given on her letter?
It will be 214b or something similar.
Yeah 214B.

My point is I'm filling the forms from here (she's not literate - someone helped out with the forms the first time).

But re: relative, the definition of immediate relative excludes siblings. I don't want to enter the wrong response while trying to be as forthcoming as possible.
TravelRe: U.S. Non-immigrant Visas: We’re Listening by halaphilip: 5:46pm On Oct 02, 2016
My sister whom I invited to the US was denied a non-immigrant visa two weeks ago. I'd just gone through her visa forms now and there's a section I'm not quite clear if she answered properly.

To the question: "do you have any immediate relatives, not including parents, in the US ", she answered NO.

Is this the right response? I want to reapply for her and I am wondering if this is one of the reasons she was denied. The definition of immediate relative I got online seems to suggest she was right but I want to be sure.

Nobody can tell you what to 'put' in an application or what one can 'have' for a successful interview. The ds 160 is detailed. She'll fill it with her details as is.
When she gets to the embassy she'll ask for an interpreter. The VO's will provide her with one.
As for the documents u sent, its your choice. However, Vo's do not look at documents and are not swayed by it for visit visas.
Fair enough. Thanks. I just wanted to be sure she has all the information she'll need for the interview. And so far we're banking on only the documents we sent her. At 52 and uneducated, I'm wondering what she'll need to do to convince the attending VO. All in the air right now.

It has been said many many times.
The USA visa officers do not look at invitation letters!

Your application must stand up on it's own.
Strong ties to prove you will return home.
Robust finances.
I'm in the US, inviting my 52-year old sister to come help take care of my baby to be delivered in November. She can't even speak English and so will need an interpreter. In this case, what will she have to put in her application and what proof of ties to Nigeria will she need? Actually her interview is next week but I'm curious nevertheless. I'm backing on invitation letter we sent and the my wife's doctor's letter.

Hello Halaphilip,

There is no special process for your family members to travel to the U.S. She would apply just like every other applicant.

Not sure this answers my question, so maybe i should clarify:

1. How much of a help will an invitation letter from us be? Going through this page it seems you people don't even bother to look at it, even though it is clear it is important in some cases.
2. The issue of proving ties to Nigeria that convinces the Consulate the person does not intend to immigrate is not clear. Based on what i have read here it seems people that work in the informal sector have their chance of getting visa remarkably reduced.

Hi Abuja NIV,

Thank you for the job you are doing.

My wife and I are US permanent residents. She moved here in 2011 while i joined her last year. Our son was born here in the US. My wife is pregnant with our second child and we would like to invite my elder sister to come be with her for the period of child delivery and for a couple of months thereafter before returning to Nigeria. My mom and my wife's mom, either of whom would have been in a better position to come help us, are late. My wife is a student and also takes care of our son. My sister is a 51-year old petty trader.

What do we need to do? Our baby is due in November.

But thanks for giving reasons for the deletion. Appreciate that a lot.
