Actually the word Biafra was coined by Portuguese. They name the bight of biafra like they named Lagos. There was nothing like a Biafra nation before Nigeria itself.

Biafra existed before Nigeria if you claim the name was coined by portuguese becos they were the first arrivals long before the British arrived to take portuguese colony.

However, in political sense, it was Ijaws that came up with the name Biafra as our nation and not Igbos.

Alot of Igbo scholars even thought the word meant something in Ijaw, after decoding Bia as come in Igbo but nobody knew wat fra meant.
