PoliticsMr. President, The Storm Is Not Over, Make Hay While The Sun Shines By Ojugo by HappyNigerian(op): 11:40pm On Aug 12, 2024
By Ojugo Onyelukachukwu
I decided to pen my thoughts because as a nation, I see we have failed to learn from history; and I fear that the resultant effects of this failure to learn can and will be more catastrophic than any and all previous experiences that were a result of the same mistakes being made in present day Nigeria.
Notably, this protest is not about you as a person, it is against the ruling elites who are being viewed or perceived to have shown no mercy, sympathy or empathy for the common man. As the President and Commander-in-Chief, it is not only common sensical but also natural that you bear the brunt of the hunger, anger and hurt of your citizens.
Mr. President, I will start from the most critical issue which is the inviolability of our union as a Country. The government’s failure to address the sharp division along tribal and religious lines orchestrated during the elections has crystalized and is gradually snowballing into a full-blown crisis. As experienced in time past, we are seeing/hearing calls for protests against the Igbos in Lagos and the clamor for them to leave Lagos (the same script which played out just before the Nigerian Civil war of 1967 when the Igbos were asked to leave the north). Sadly, if events spiral downwards in the same manner, it just might spell the end of Nigeria; indeed, all the geo-political regions and most tribes are sufficiently armed and ready to war. Mr. President may it not go down in history that you midwifed the decimation of Nigeria or that Nigeria collapsed under your supritendence.. Mr President please make hay while the sun shines.
It is commonly said that when a fly perches on one’s scrotum, the use of force is not the solution as it can lead to more devastating consequences. It is expedient that you know that threat and/or use of force, and grandstanding against your own citizens who are simply asking for better governance and standards of living is an absolute no no. Na “hard man hard man’’ land Naija for wahala in 1967’. There are definitely other ways to approach this issue; Government, it is often said must have a human face but your actions, reactions and body language speak to the contrary. As a leader, you must constantly engage the people you lead - speak to us in good times, in bad times, and most importantly, in times of turmoil such as we are presently experiencing.
A very obvious example of this government’s failure to identify with its people is the on-going protests tagged “10 days of rage”. Notice of this protest came over a month ago, yet nothing was done. Even after it started, it took you 72 hours (3 days) to speak to your children in a manner and with words that lacked inspiration, to a certain degree empty, and showed no concrete efforts or actions to address the various concerns and demands of the protesters. Your speech simply buttressed the fact that our leaders are detached from reality. Your handlers may have told you that you should not appear weak and must use strong words to show power and authority but Mr. President, there is nothing weak in listening to your people and/or acceding to their needs… Mr. President please make hay while the sun shines

Mr. President, while you are not totally responsible for the rotten state of the Nation as you are barely 15 months in office, you cannot be divorced or detached from its predicaments. You did not just incubate the historic building of an opposition that wrestled power from an incumbent, but you have also been in the corridors of power for a very long time. As of today, you are the most experienced politician to ever become president in Ngeria; and having built alliances across all the geo-political zones in the Country, surely you must know where all the dead bodies are buried. It is quite disturbing and disheartening that certain things are happening under your watch… Mr. President please make hay while the sun shines

In analyzing our challenges as a Country, Argentina comes to mind; just a few months ago it was in a state worse than Nigeria with an inflation rate that was over the roof, With its economy in shambles, hunger filled the land and the country was near bankruptcy; but in came President Javier Milei, who took the reins of power and began sincere and concrete reforms; the results are there for all to see. Mr. President surely, we can learn a thing or two with modifications to suit the peculiarity of our clime by cutting government expenditure, reducing overheads, blocking leakages, and increasing our revenue and productivity. With these actions, I am certain that before long, Nigeria’s dignity and status as the giant of Africa will be restored. Mr. President please make hay while the sun shines
Mr. President, please permit me to highlight some steps you should take to show yourself as a leader who truly cares and listens. Nigeria and Nigerians are languishing in hunger and penury because what is being produced cannot service its budget; a nation such as ours that is in huge debt cannot afford to have forty-eight (48) ministers - the largest cabinet in our history. This is the time to cut down on expenses and save money. You must expunge the so called “hardship allowance” wardrobe allowance and many unnecessary monetary additions being paid to members of the National Assembly while their constituents can barely feed; create a leaner infrastructure that is more efficient by merging ministries and parastatals with similar or duplicate mandates and responsibilities.
Mr. president you must lead by example. You cannot ask the people to sacrifice without providing leadership in this regard; a budget of twenty-one billion Naira (21bn) to build or renovate a Vice-Presidential residence is absolutely in bad taste. Seventy billion Naira (70Bn) for National Assembly members to acquire SUVs at 108 million Niara each; Four Billion Naira (4bn) for Dodan barracks; another three billion Naira (3bn) for Aguda house; 1.5bn for vehicles in the first lady’s office; 21m for senators per month; 13.5m for Reps monthly; 300% salary and allowances increase for judges? Rumours of acquitsition of Yatch, etc. All these and more reeks of so much extravagance in these very austere times?
On the issue of procuring a presidential jet, let us even concede without agreeing that it was absolutely necessary, what happens to the previous fleet? Would it not have been wiser to sell some and just add top-up funds to acquire the new one? All these while “we the people” experience the worst kind of crippling and biting inflation? Surely, you cannot expect us to clap for you while dying of hunger and barely surviving. Perception is key to the situation we have found ourselves and Mr President please make hay while the sun shines
Furthermore, Mr. President, these protests you see across the country are revolts against Nigerias’ Kleptomaniac ruling class not just you as a person or the seat of the Presidency as they are seen as lacking empathy for the people and having no care for the plight of the people just amassing wealth, getting all the can, canning all they get and sitting on it while they people hunger and suffer. I think it was President JF Kenndy who said “If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, then it definitely cannot save the few who are rich” JF Kennedy January 20 1961.
I personally cannot remember the last time NNPC, CBN, FIRS, and other very juicy Government Parastatals so to say had a public and open recruitment, yet daily the number of their employees swell employing children of the rich, mighty and connected while the ordinary citizens are constantly overlooked even when they are qualified. There has to be transparency and meritocracy in the activities and operations of the government which will help build and solidify the culture of hard work and dignity in labour. Mr President please make hay while the sun shines

In Addition Mr President, As a nation, we cannot continue to reward evil and bad behavior, this is one of the reasons for the anger in the land, you have made some appointments and some of them have questionable characters or have been involved in one malaise or the other, what message are we passing to the younger generation, that you can get away with anything as long as you have connections? Certain examples abound, Madam Macauley should be sacked with immediate effect; she was not only caught hoarding palliatives meant to cushion the effect of hardship brought on by COVID 19, but also known to have used same as souvenirs for her birthday. Haba! What message are we passing down to the younger ones? There is also one of your new DGs who was sacked for embezzlement but now has an appointment under your government… Mr President what lessons or legacy are we giving our younger generation…. Mr President please make hay while the sun shines

When you put all these together, you should see clearly why “we the people” are on the streets. You promised us renewed hope in this nation; that was your slogan for election.
However, hopelessness has filled our land. And guess what Sir? Hopelessness births chaos. Now imagine it being fueled by hunger and anger…. Mr. president force will not solve this issue o! There is a yoruba saying “oju pipon o ran cigar, - red eyes cannot light cigarette”
Mr. President, your silence and the impunity with which your appointees and cronies ala Wike, Asari Dokubo, Onanuga etc are responding to the pains and agitations of the people might just be the last straw that will break the camel’s back. When Nigerians who love life and know how to live it to the fullest say they would rather die on the streets than sit at home and die, then you should know that the handshake has gone beyond the elbow and it has become critical to not just act, but act right by executing the following suggestions which I consider low hanging fruits urgently:
 Immediately cut down the number of ministers and appointees to the barest minimum necessary.
 Immediate review of allowances of National assembly members and appointees… what is hardship allowance, wardrobe allowance and many other ridiculous allowances that further present the ruling class as insensitive to the people.
 Identify credible men and women of integrity who can and will engage the protesters thereby showing that the government is serious about negotiations and is for the people. Address and resolve the grievances of the protesters and watch the protest fizzle out naturally
 Address the hunger in the land which is a uniting force against the government and its leaders; the rich have become attractive as food for survival as crimes has astronomically increased so much so that what we considered as petty crimes have become dangerous.
 Amend the Electoral Act - Make electronic transmission of results mandatory at polling units.
 Immediate review of your appointee and removing those of questionable character and those with one corrupt issues hanging over their heads, perception is key to repairing the damaged confidence in your Government.
 Address and Punish those who have been found wanting financially or due to incompetence.
 Review electricity tariffs.
 Reintroduce the petroleum subsidy as it was the only social intervention enjoyed by all citizens of the Country. The problem Nigeria faced in this sector was not the subsidy initiative in itself, but the corruption and sharp practices within that sector.
As a matter of fact, you told us that subsidy on petroleum products have been completely removed but conflicting reports show that subsidy is still being paid. Why then are the people buying petroleum products at such neck breaking rates? In other developed climes, they subsidize one thing or the other for their ctizens, especially energy, these subsidies in energy encourages manufacturing and production and makes them competitive in the international market. With our high energy cost rate and fuel rate how will the local manufacturer compete with goods from China? They are automatically disadvantaged and simply cannot compete or survive.

Mr. President, please make no mistake, this protest is against a kleptomaniac political class and the desire to end bad governance. Nigerian leaders have failed to realize that times have changed and the country is evolving. Yes, indeed you have made certain bold moves such as restoring local government autonomy, introducing the idea of local government electoral body etc. that are laudable, indeed necessary but not sufficient in addressing the inherent hunger in the land.
Always remember that you are dealing with a very resilient people. This is a generation that sustained Endsars in 2020 by surmounting every single obstacle they encountered; from providing mobile toilets, to feeding and even inventing solar powered infrastructure to charge their mobile devices in the course of the protest.
Mr. President you must understand that violence cannot quell the anger and hunger, instead it is hunger and anger that is uniting the common man against the political class. There is a need for urgent and proper strategy and it begins with identifying with “we the people” and showing yourself as a listening President and father. You must refuse to listen to those who care more for power over peace.
This is your foundation for peace and repositioning the Nation… Mr President please make hay while the sun shines

language and culture for future generations.
- The government should support or build cultural and heritage centers in Igbo land where
the custodians would display artifacts reflecting our heritage, culture, ethics, and values.

Our legislatures should sponsor legislation geared towards preventing the destruction of
such heritage and landmarks that could serve as tourist destinations. These landmarks
should be carved out, marked, and preserved.
Implementation plan:
In all, we must ensure that our language, the very pulse of our culture, must beat strong in
our homes, schools, and communities. Our heritage which is a rich treasure trove of
wisdom, art, and tradition must be cherished and shared with the world. Our ethics and
values, the foundation upon which our society stands must be reflected in our daily lives
and passed on to our children, nurturing them to become the guardians of our legacy.

Hon. Johnson Adamu Leads Etsako East LGA Vice Chairman, Ward Executives, Others To Resign From PDP

Hon. Johnson Adamu, a prominent young chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, has led a mass defection of party executives from the PDP in Edo State.

According to letters cited, Hon. Adamu, who has been a strong voice of the party in the last decade and leader of Ward 9, resigned his membership of the PDP alongside the Vice Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Area, entire ward 9 executives, and several other party loyalists loyal to him.

The defection is seen as a significant blow to the PDP in the state, as Hon. Adamu is widely respected and has a large following among young people in the party within and outside Edo State.

According to the letters, the reason for mass resignation centred on disagreements with the government and party leadership over issues of governance and internal democracy. The former members accused the governor of the state of promoting godfatherism that is not in line with their principles.

The development is expected to have far-reaching implications for the party in Etsako East as it prepares for the September 21 Governorship poll.

In the past months, PDP has witnessed mass exodus of its younger members due to what they describe as lack of direction in the Party. Worse hit by the wave of defection is Edo State chapter where many of its members are leaving in mass.

PoliticsSaraki Reacts As Supreme Court Rules Melrose Received No Illegal Fund From NGF by HappyNigerian(op): 1:20pm On Jun 08, 2024
Yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court, which overturned the 2018 decision of the Federal High Court regarding an alleged N3.5 billion fraud case against Melrose General Services Ltd., has brought a long and arduous legal ordeal to a just and welcome conclusion.

As much as this case was between the EFCC and Melrose General Services Limited, it was a proxy war, with Melrose serving as a mere pawn in a larger scheme to victimize and persecute me. It was always clear that this case, just like my CCT case, was a thinly veiled attempt by the Buhari administration to use the EFCC for political gain. The allegations of "Paris Club Fraud" were nothing more than a smokescreen designed to weaken my office as President of the Senate and tarnish my reputation through spurious accusations similar to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, from which I was also acquitted.

As I said at the CCT, this case too was a politically motivated attack, not on corruption, but on the very foundations of our democracy. It aimed to undermine the independence of the judiciary, the separation of powers, and checks and balances—principles I have always fiercely defended. They hoped that by targeting me, they could sow discord within the legislature, turning colleagues against each other, ultimately weakening the institution of the Senate, and silencing dissenting voices.

I am profoundly grateful to Almighty Allah(SWT), the ultimate arbiter of justice, for guiding the Supreme Court to this righteous verdict. I commend the judiciary for their meticulous examination of the evidence and adherence to due process, which has ensured that justice prevailed. I also thank Melrose’s legal team for their tireless efforts in seeing this case to a just conclusion.:

Moving forward, we all have to canvass for fairness in the fight against corruption. We should see this verdict as an inspiration to champion the rule of law, promote democracy and its institutions, and tolerate divergent views.

PoliticsFG, States Urged To Memorialise Nigeria/Biafra War by HappyNigerian(op): 4:05pm On Jun 06, 2024
PRESS STATEMENT

June 6, 2024

FG, States Urged to Memorialise Nigeria/Biafra War
Implement policies, programmes addressing lingering effects of 30-month war, Honour victims, veterans

The Federal, State and Local Governments as well as relevant stakeholders have been urged to institutionalize memorialisation of the 30-month Nigeria/Biafra War (July 6, 1967-January 15, 1970).

This formed the thrust of the communique of the second edition of Nzuko Umunna monthly dialogue on the topic: “Memorializing the Nigerian – Biafran War- A Catalyst to Better Civic Engagement and Sustainable Development in Southeast Nigeria.”

In the monthly Webinar held on 30th May, 2024, stakeholders from different sectors including academics, traditional, civil society organizations, community leaders and policymakers, reflected on memorialising the Nigeria-Biafra War and its implications for civic engagement and sustainable development in the region.

A communique by President of Nzuko Umunna, Professor Chinedu Nebo and Executive Secretary, Dr. Uju Agomoh said participants deliberated and reminiscence on the devastating effects of the war on Igbo land as a whole including the lives lost, people displaced along with economic devastation.

They extolled the resilience and determination of the Igbo people of Nigeria in the face of all the adversity which brought about the significant progress made in rebuilding and reconstructing Igbo land despite all the social, economic, and political challenges that tried frustrating sustainable development in the region.

The session called on the government and stakeholders to establish memorial museums, digital archives and online platforms dedicated wholly to the history of the Nigerian-Biafran War, showcasing personal stories, artifacts, photographs and historical documents with interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations to engage visitors and educate them on the impacts of war.

As part of the memorialisation, they called for the erection of monuments in key locations to honour the victims and veterans of the war.

Other recommendations by the session were to “develop school curriculum that includes comprehensive lessons on the Nigerian-Biafran War with emphasis on the importance of peace and reconciliation.

“Organize workshops and seminars with historians, survivors and scholars to facilitate deeper understanding and dialogue.

“Annual commemorative events in forms of memorial services, peace walks and cultural festivals on significant dates related to the war.

“Implement policies and programmes that address the lingering effects of the war.

“Support initiatives that promote civic engagement and sustainable development in the region.

“Encourage community participation in these events to foster a sense of collective memory and solidarity.”

Government was also urged to collaborate with non-governmental organizations like Nzuko Umunna, Ohanaeze Ndigbo etc, international bodies to fund and implement memorialization projects, ensuring that initiatives reflect the experiences and perspectives of all affected groups to foster inclusivity and ownership.

Government should identify and preserve significant sites related to the war, such as battlefields, refugee camps and historical buildings; to support initiatives that will bring solutions to the root causes of conflict and encourage sustainable and remarkable development in Alaigbo.

Participants said the communique when implemented will not only help in memorializing the dead war veterans but also help to promote healing and educate the future generations and bring about sustainable development and peace in the Southeast and Nigeria in general.

Continuing, the communique noted the resolve of participants to nurture a culture that enhances peace, tolerance, and understanding in the midst of the diverse communities in Alaigbo.

Other resolutions taken were: “To sponsor and encourage a participatory and inclusive governance to ensure that all citizens have a voice.

“Encourage massive investment in vital areas of the economy like health, infrastructure and education which will lead to massive human capital and economic growth.”

The keynote speaker, Barrister Adaeze Anah, the Managing Principal at The Anah Law Practice, made an incisive and engaging presentation where she highlighted human rights violations especially genocide committed against the Biafra side by the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agents.

According to her, despite the intense agitation discourses on the war rouses, there has been a reluctance to examine violations suffered by the people of the defunct Biafra through a human rights lens.

Anah said: “In essence, analysing Nigerian – Biafran War through the human rights lens is the most viable way to disrupt the denialism of the Nigerian Government and the International System regarding the violations suffered by the people of defunct Biafra. It opens up the possibility of reparations and remedies for victims of violations and gives room for demand for accountability. With this being said, two pertinent questions beg to be answered; “Did the Federal Government of Nigeria commit acts constituting violations of humanitarian and human rights laws against the people of the defunct Biafra? And is there a legal basis for the Nigerian Government to be held accountable for these violations?

“The Federal Government of Nigeria committed acts that unequivocally violated humanitarian and human rights laws. These violations trigger an obligation on the part of the Nigerian Government to provide remedies. These obligations are anchored on remedy as required by Article 2 (3) of the ICCPR. These obligations remain undischarged and the violations against the people of the defunct Biafra continue to date producing a more complicated problem that stunts the corporate growth of the region.”

Citing the Genocide Convention, Anah stated that the actions of the Nigerian Government and its military amounted to genocide against the Igbo people in the war. It does not matter that the heavyweights do not acknowledge it, it is what it is.  Fifty-two years later, the Rwandan Genocide which happened more than three decades after the Genocide in the Nigerian-Biafran War and recorded considerably lower casualties (800,000 as opposed to the about 2,000,000 deaths in defunct Biafra) have not only received massive attention from the global human rights system and the International Community at large and has become the ultimate symbol of justice, it has become the universal symbol of the fight against genocide.

“Whilst I find this certainly questionable, it would be dishonest not to give the Rwandan people for this “success” because we can all agree that they have done a good job of memorializing that genocide,” she opined.

The Nigerian – Biafran war ended in 1970 but the effect of that war continues to rear its head and affect the experiences of Ndigbo as Nigerians. She listed some of the ways the politics and violations from the war continue to affect the lives of Ndigbo to include stigmatization, marginalization, crime and misplacement of the Igbo moral standards, displacement of Ndigbo as well as undying secessionist agitation.

“Another profound manifestation of this stigmatization is the reluctance and, in some cases, outright refusal of some Igbo communities in the minority in the south-south to identify as Igbos. This is against unimpeached history showing that these communities are of Igbo descent. These disassociations became popular after the war showing how inelegant it is perceived to be Igbo in the Nigerian space…

“One of the legacies of the Nigeria-Biafra war that does not get as much attention as it should be is the displacement of many children during the war. For this discussion, I specifically highlight the children who were airlifted and sent to different African countries to save them from dying of starvation during the war. Some of these children were air-lifted by the Joint Church Aid, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the French Red Cross, and Caritas and were taken to countries like Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe, Ivory Coast. etc. Many of these children never returned. This is one of the sad yet seldom talked about legacy of the war,” Anah stated.

In his opening remarks, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe (Agbogidi) who chaired the event, urged Ndigbo to always do a retrospection of their trajectory, noting that he who did not know where the rain started pouring on him might not know where it would stop.

Describing Ndigbo as creative, enterprising, industrious, and God-fearing, the monarch urged them not to let down the guard but continue to keep the Igbo spirit alive.

The two panel discussants-Dr. Okey Anueyiagu and Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, harped on the need for Ndigbo to always ‘know themselves’ given their peculiar situation in Nigeria which calls for eternal vigilance and tact.

PoliticsNigeria Gold Reserves: Senator Natasha's Bill Scales Second Reading by HappyNigerian(op): 9:25pm On Jun 05, 2024
Senate on Wednesday at plenary passed for second reading, A Bill For An Act To Make Provisions For Nigeria Gold Reserve Industry Framework, And Other Related Matters.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP/Kogi Central).

In her lead debate, Senator Natasha said the Nigerian Gold Reserve Bill represents a proactive step towards harnessing and maximising the potential of Nigeria's gold reserves by establishing a robust framework for the harnessing, exploitation, and marketing of gold.

She noted that central banks globally have been increasing reserves held in gold as a hedge against currency volatility and geopolitical risks.

"Gold reserves are critical for the economic stability of a country, acting as a reliable store of value, particularly during financial uncertainties.

"Before the fall of the Naira, that we are now experiencing the negative effects, one Naira was equivalent to one Dollar or even greater at a time. This was because the value of the Naira was measured against Gold.

"By virtue of Section 2 of the Financial Agreement (Decimal Currency) Act (the Act that established the use of the Naira), “the parity of the Naira shall be equivalent to 1.24414 grams of fine gold”. A gram of gold is currently approximately $75.70, this was the strength of the Naira before its fall," she said.

The merits

The Bill seeks to strengthen Nigeria's position in the global gold market and ensure responsible and sustainable practices that benefit the country's economy and communities.

The Bill also seeks to establish the Nigeria Gold Authority (NGA) that will be charged among other things, with the administration of Nigerian Mining Act with regards to the country's gold resources thereby creating a robust gold reserve industry for the nation.

It also seeks to enhance the exploitation and sales of gold within Nigeria that will not only enhance the engagement and earning power of artisanal local miners but also ensure the maintenance of a strong Gold Reserve Ratio, as bulwark for strong and resilient economy that will create jobs in Nigeria through the gold industry.

The Bill further seeks to diversify Nigeria's Reserve base by engendering the broadening of the nation's gold reserve ratio which currently stands at less than 2% of the total foreign reserve.

By erecting a local gold exploitation, harnessing and marketing industry with the Central Bank of Nigeria as the ultimate off-taker of all gold produced in Nigeria and with same, maintains a healthy Gold Reserve base, the Bill seeks to assist in hedging the Naira against depreciation and the economy against inflation, given the intrinsic value of Gold which, comparatively, remains stable as a store of value.

The Bill presents a significant opportunity to drive economic growth and diversification by creating a conducive environment for investment in the gold sector, that can attract both domestic and foreign investors, stimulate job creation and boost revenue streams for the government.

Recognising the importance of environmental sustainability, the Bill incorporates stringent regulations to minimise the ecological footprint of gold mining and processing activities. It emphasises reclamation and rehabilitation efforts to ensure the long-term health of our natural ecosystems.

The Nigeria Gold Reserves Bill focuses on fostering positive relationships with local communities through transparent consultation processes, community benefits agreements, and the establishment of community development funds.

It also seeks to ensure that the benefits of gold mining extend beyond corporate profits to uplift the lives of Nigerians.

The clear regulatory frameworks outlined in the Bill provide certainty to industry stakeholders while ensuring accountability and transparency in operations.

The Bill received support from senators, who recognised its potential to contribute to Nigeria's economic growth and development.

Senator Adetokunbo Abiru described the Bill as "timely and important," while Senator Adeola Olamilekan commended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for her efforts to address illegal gold mining.

Senator Sanni Musa noted that the Bill would create job opportunities and help end illegal mining.

Senator Isah Jibril Echocho commended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for her initiative, stating that the Bill would enhance gold reserves utilisation and strengthen the Naira.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole suggested including capital punishment for illegal gold mining offenses.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, lauded Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's intelligent move to boost the economy.

PoliticsNational Youth Alliance Condemns Attempt To Arrest Its Member In Borno by HappyNigerian(op): 8:42pm On May 22, 2024
A frontline movement, National Youth Alliance (NYA) has condemned an attempted arrest of one of its members, Sheriff Banki, allegedly under the orders of the Borno State Government.

According to a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna, President of NYA, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, decried the alleged attempted arrest.

The statement signed by the SA Media and Publicity to the NYA President, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, wondered why the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum who is well respected, would think of such a thing, if really he is involved in the attempted arrest.

"It is quite disheartening to see our governor who suppose to be servant of the good people of Borno, using his office to intimidate, harass and detain innocent citizens because they exercised their constitutional rights as citizens," Ambassador Abbas said in the statement.

NYA explained that already, a petition has been written by a law firm, Saraki, Ahmed and Partners to the Inspector General of Police, in which, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 15, was alleged to be conniving with the Borno State Governor to intimidate their client, Sheriff Banki, who is a member of the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the petition dated May 8, 2024, signed by Ahmed Sani Esq and Isiaka Saidu Esq, with the acknowledgement copy stamped May 10, Zulum through the Borno State Attorney General and a group of lawyers, is claiming that their client Banki insulted the governor through a recorded audio.

The petition however, described the refusal of the AIG Zone 15 to provide Banki's legal representatives with copies of the petition against him from the Borno Government, as well as the invasion of his residence as an attempt to deny him of fair hearing.

PoliticsIndigenous People Of Nigeria Slam Umahi For Maligning Obi by HappyNigerian(op): 7:49pm On May 06, 2024
The Indigenous People of Nigeria (IPN) has frowned at the recent statement made by the Minister of Works, Engineer Dave Umahi insinuating that the Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi is inciting the Southeast geopolitical zone against the Federal government.

I IPN further appealed to the apex Igbo sociocultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo to call Umahi to order to desist from anti Igbo agenda.

It will be recalled that Umahi had during a press briefing on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway told journalists that Peter Obi was inciting Igbos against the Federal govt due to the demolition of Landmark Event Resort.

Read the press statement by IPN:

06/05/2024
Protocol:

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we, the Indigenous People of Nigeria (IPN), have convened this press conference today to publicly condemn the inciting statement made by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi whose statement paints the picture of a fool and his tools in the pool of water. It demonstrates the bigotry and blemishes that have plagued Nigerian politics for far too long. Unfortunately, the Igbo tribe has been at the receiving end of this utter discrimination, and it is disheartening to see some Igbo political elites perpetuating this cycle of hate.
We are today gathered here to express our deep disappointment and outrage that some of our so-called Igbo political elites seem unperturbed that the Igbo tribe has for too long been at the receiving end of Nigerian politics of bigotry and blemishes. It is disheartening that unlike the proverbial son of the tortoise who vowed that a single experience of evil is enough experience, Minister Dave Umahi presents himself as the current insignia of “political servitude”.
Nobody is against anybody who wishes to be a perpetual stooge, but to tow any other person into the state of savagery, or malign anybody who shares a contrary belief, is the atrocious, malicious, and capricious tendency we condemn. It is not the first time Dave Umahi has attacked Peter Obi since his prominence in the race to preside over the affairs of Nigeria. Tried as he did in vain during the 2019 Presidential election to truncate the nomination of Peter Obi as the vice presidential candidate, Umahi furthered his hatred for Obi when he became the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and has since the conclusion of the election, failed to rest in his vociferous attacks on Obi.
Granted, that Umahi reserves the right to aspire to any height he so chooses, it is preposterous of him to single out Obi for incarceration and elimination. How else can one explain that in a matter of National importance as the contentious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi could accuse Obi of inciting Ndigbo against the government? In fact, it beats reasonable imagination why any sane Nigerian would take Dave Umahi seriously. Umahi’s stock in trade since joining the APC is a well-scripted anti-Igbo agenda. If it serves his paymasters’ purpose, it’s well and good. However, talking down on the entire ethnic group and dragging them into a sinister scheme is characteristic of Robinson Crusoe’s “Man Friday”, which depicts an incredible predilection for treachery, perfidy, and faithlessness.
We worry that allowing men who thrive on thievery and the aggrandizement of mercantile politicking to take positions of authority poses the danger of extending their political relevance beyond their sphere of influence. It is their delusion that anything standing in their way must be pulled down. Obi is no doubt politically ahead of Umahi, having the majority acceptance of Nigerians, but this Press Conference is not solely about Umahi and his unwarranted assaults on Obi. The conference is a call for caution across Igbo land. We want to say enough is enough of self-annihilation and self-destruction. The Igbo race has been caught in the crossfire of this hack annihilation, and it is time we tell the enemy within to withdraw or face the wrath because it cannot be said that the force of darkness conquers the light.
This is therefore a call on “Ohaneze Ndigbo” to quickly address the various cases of crab mentality amongst our political leaders and call all concerned to order. A stitch in time saves nine. We must stand against this divisive rhetorics and work towards a united and prosperous Nigeria for all.
Thank you.

PoliticsBello Loot: Northern Group Writes NJC Demands Justice Isah Abdullahi by HappyNigerian(op): 6:35pm On Apr 27, 2024
The Northern Ethnic Youth Group Assembly (NEYGA) has asked the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate Justice Isah Abdullahi Jamil of the High Court of Kogi State, Lokoja Judicial Division, for abuse of powers in a case involving the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

The Northern Group made the request known in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday.

Spokesperson of NEYGA, Alhaji Dan-Musa said orders granted by Justice Isah Abdullahi Jamil are not only illegal but constitute a gross abuse of judicial process and powers in the light of judicial decisions.

The group argued that the injunction granted by Justice Isah Abdullahi Jamil is a daring slap on the face of the Supreme Court, the constitution and the Judiciary and should be punished to deter others from following the same steps.

The statement reads: “There are at least five (5) settled principles of law violated by the interim injunction:

“First, the High Court of Kogi State lacks the requisite jurisdiction to entertain any subject matter or question relating to:

“The administration, management or control of the Federal Government or any of its agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC;

“The operation and interpretation of the Constitution in so far as it affects the Federal Government or any of its agencies and

“Any action or proceeding for a declaration, order or injunction affecting the validity of any executive or administrative action or decision by the Federal Government or any of its agencies.

“By virtue of Section 251 (1) (p), (q) and (r) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the jurisdiction over the subject matter listed in the preceding paragraph is conferred EXCLUSIVELY on the Federal High Court. For ease of reference, the following cases are apt: NEPA v. Edegbero (2002) 18 NWLR (Pt. 798) 69; Benson Agbule v. Warri Refinery & Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (2013) 6 NWLR (Pt. 798) 78; Olutola v. University of Ilorin (2005) 3 MJSC 151 at Pp. 173-174; Inegbedion v. Selo-Ojemen & Anor (2013) All FWLR (Pt. 688) 907 at Pp. 922-923 and very recently, John Shoy International Limited v. Federal Housing Authority (Unreported Appeal No. SC. 98/2005) delivered July 2016 by the Supreme Court.

“It is beyond argument that the suit instituted by the wanted Yahaya Bello who is on the run and the orders made by Justice Isah Abdullahi Jamil clearly offends the provisions 251 (1) (p), (q) and (r) of the Constitution and the Supreme Court authorities cited supra. The subject matter in the case relates to the operation and interpretation of the Constitution as it affects the EFCC and ICPC (both of which are agencies of the Federal Government).

“The interim injunction affects the validity of the administrative actions of the anti-corruption agencies.

The law is now firmly established that proceedings no matter how well conducted and orders made by a court without jurisdiction are a nullity. The locus classicus on this is Madukolo v. Nkemdilim (1962) 2 SCNLR 341.

“On the power of Federal law enforcement agencies to investigate state government, this is an issue resolved by the Supreme Court in the case of Attorney General of Ondo State v. Attorney General of the Federation (2002) 9 NWLR (Pt.772) 2222. Relying on Sections 4 (4) and 15 (5) and items 60 (a) and 67 of the First Schedule to the Constitution and other enabling provisions, the Apex Court upheld, validated and sustained the ICPC and its establishment Act and dismissed the arguments canvassed by Ondo State.

This decision was followed consistently in subsequent cases on the subject.

“The power to prosecute economic crimes is exclusive to the Federal Government. It is not shared with the States. See the Supreme Court decision in Nyame v. Federal Republic of Nigeria (2010) 11 NWLR (Pt. 1193) 344.

In the Amadi v. Federal Republic of Nigeria (2008) 18 NWLR (Pt. 1119) 259 at 276, Muktar, JSC (as he then was) held that: ‘Indeed, the EFCC is a common agency for both the Federal and State Economic and Financial Crimes’.

“In the light of the position of the law as encapsulated above, it is most shocking, regrettable and embarrassing that Alhaji Yahaya Bello , who until January 27th, 2024 was the chief Executive of Kogi State by virtue of Section 195 of the Constitution purported to set “a precedent” over an issue that the Supreme Court of Nigeria has settled.

“The injunction granted by Justice Isah Abdullahi Jamil is a daring slap on the face of the Supreme Court, the constitution and the Judiciary and should be punish to deter others from following the same steps.”

On Thursday, Justice Isa Abdullahi Jamil ordered the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to appear in court on May 13, 2024, for allegedly disobeying court order.

Justice Jamil, delivering a ruling in Suit No: HCL/68M/2024 and Motion No: HCL/190M/2024, ordered that “the said act was carried out by the Respondent (EFCC) in violation of the order, which was valid and subsisting when they carried out the act. That same act of the Respondent amounts to Contempt.”

Justice Jamil’s order was based on a motion ex-parte filed by Yahaya Bello through his lawyer, M.S. Yusuf, Esq, where he prayed the court for an order to issue and serve the Respondent (EFCC Chairman) with Form 49 Notice to show cause why Order of committal should not be made on Olukoyede.

Delivering his order on the motion on April 25, 2024, Justice Jamil said, “The applicant’s application before me is to the effect that the Respondent has carried out some acts upon which they have been restrained by this Court on the 9th of February, 2024, pending the determination of the substantive motion on Notice before this Court.

“That the said act was carried out by the Respondent in violation of the order which was valid and subsisting when they carried out those acts.

That same acts of the Respondent amounts to acts of contempt.

“That the Respondent should be summoned to appear before this Court to answer to the contempt charge.

“It’s against the above facts that this Court hereby grants the prayers sought in line with the principle of “Audi Ultra Patem”. To wit:

“An order of this Honourable Court for the issuance of Form 49 Notice to show cause why order of committal should not be made against the Executive Chairman of the Respondent – Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“An order for service of Form 49-Notice to show why order of committal should not be made on the Executive Chairman of the Respondent – Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at EFCC Corporate Headquarters, Plot 301/302, Research and Institution District, Abuja.

“This matter is adjourned to the 13th of May, 2024 for the Respondent’s Chairman to appear before this Court in answer to form 49 ordered to be served on him.”
