Politics / Adeola Samuel-Ilori: Controversy As NBA Disowns Lagos Lawyer And Critic by HappyNigerian: 9:52am On Apr 28, 2020
The Nigerian Bar Association has disowned a Lagos-based social critic, Adeola Samuel-Ilori, saying it has no record of him as a legal practitioner.

The NBA, in a correspondence from its General Secretary, Jonathan Gunu Taidi, said Samuel-Ilori’s name was not on the enrolment list of lawyers with the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“I further state that the said name is not contained in the database of the Nigerian Bar Association and I am unable to provide any information on him,” Taidi added in the letter dated January 7, 2020.

The Secretary, Ikeja branch of the NBA, Chinedu Ifezue, in a mail to our correspondent on March 11, 2020, said there was no record of Samuel-Ilori.

Ifezue stated that Samuel-Ilori should be queried on his enrolment details with the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The enquiries followed complaints to The PUNCH about the activities of the critic, who was alleged to be operating under the name, Lead Solicitors, a chamber in the Ikeja area of the state.

The critic, it was alleged, collected money from people, who had issues with power companies, promising to take matters up for them.

A source told our correspondent that the activist ran a programme on Rainbow FM, a radio station in Lagos, where he asked members of the public to call him for their problems.

A source said, “He has a law firm called Lead Solicitors. He also goes about under the name of a consumer advocate group, the All Electricity Consumers Forum. He encourages people to register with him and he issues them with ID cards to show that they are his members.

“He also takes up their cases as a lawyer. He is on a forum where you have governors, ministers, former ministers and electricity distribution companies, claiming to be representing the public.”

The source wondered how Samuel-Ilori deceived some media houses, who regularly sought his views as a lawyer and an activist.

He noted that the owners of the radio station, where the suspect hosted the talk show every Tuesday, called him a lawyer.

“And most of the things he says are not correct, but a lot of people are carried away. He institutes cases on behalf of people, who approach his law firm. While sometimes he does it himself, he uses people in his chambers at other times,” he added.

PUNCH Metro obtained documents where Samuel-Ilori allegedly claimed to be a lawyer, affixing the title, Esquire, to his name.

Our correspondent also observed that Samuel-Ilori had on December 17, 2018 filed a civil suit before a Federal High Court in Lagos State.

However, in that particular matter, it was observed that another lawyer in his chamber, identified as Charles Afolabi, used his NBA seal.

Samuel-Ilori also deposed to a 16-paragraph affidavit suing the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, the Ikeja Electric and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu.

When our correspondent contacted Afolabi and asked if he was aware that Samuel-Ilori could be fake, he laughed it off.

“To the best of my knowledge, he is a lawyer and he was in the profession before me. In fact, he came from a family of lawyers,” Afolabi stated.

PUNCH Metro confronted Samuel-Ilori with the reports of the NBA and asked him for a rebuttal.

He, however, claimed to be in a meeting and asked if he could meet the reporter for a one-on-one discussion.

When the reporter insisted on a telephone conversation, he asked to call back.

However, when our correspondent called back, Samuel-Ilori only asked for his details.

Two days later, PUNCH Metro called him back to respond to the allegations, but he did not take the calls.

The reporter then sent him a text message reminding him of the request to call back.

“I can’t recollect sir. I received many calls from the media, especially on the recent issue of electricity tariff and estimated bill capping as my group, the All Electricity Consumers Protection Forum, was involved in the advocacy and struggle that worked to achieve it. But you can let’s talk tomorrow sir,” he replied.

Our correspondent reminded him that the purpose of the call was to clarify if he was a lawyer and for him to disprove the NBA statements.

He never replied.

More than two weeks later when our correspondent called his line, Samuel-Ilori said he could not talk because he was in a noisy area and promised to call back.

He never did.

A representative of Rainbow FM told PUNCH Metro that Samuel-Ilori was not an employee of the radio station, adding that he was only a regular guest on a programme hosted by an independent producer.

“We don’t have anything to do with him. It is one of the independent producers, who brings him on our show. His credentials are not with us and we don’t have any official business with him,” the official said.

The President of the NBA, Paul Usoro, said many people had been sent to jail for claiming to be lawyers when they were not.

He said whenever the association got such complaints, it usually report to the police for arrest and prosecution.

Usoro, however, noted that a lawyer might be deregistered after facing a disciplinary committee.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the command had yet to get complaints on the activities of Samuel-Ilori.

“Now that you have brought it to our attention, we will work on it and get to the root of the matter,” he added.

Business / COVID-19: Rosabon Announces N6M Collateral-free Loan For Civil Servants by HappyNigerian: 8:25pm On Apr 26, 2020
Rosabon Financial Services, one of Nigeria’s leading Non-Bank Financial Services provider, has announced collateral-free and guarantor-free loans as low as 40,000 Naira and up to 6 Million Naira to cater to Civil Servants in light of the Coronavirus crisis.

The loan offering is targeted at Civil Servants who are currently affected by the lockdown and have their payroll handled by The Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

According to Managing Director of Rosabon Financial Services, Mr. Chukwuma Ochonogor, “Rosabon is indeed proud to provide solutions for our borrowers in their time of need. For many Civil Servants in Nigeria, getting funds to help meet basic needs during this COVID-19 lock-down can be tough. As such, our Public Sector Loan service has been designed to effectively address their short to medium-term financing needs.”

“While it is true that workers can always save to prepare for the events of an emergency, such as job loss, unexpected home repairs, medical emergency, and others; they may not have fully prepared for the lockdown.”

He added: “With the increase in the prices of food items and other harsh financial realities, many Civil Servants may find themselves in a difficult situation. Therefore, Rosabon Financial Services is offering quick and affordable loans with a flexible repayment period of up to 24 months to help Civil Servants survive in the COVID-19 pandemic.

I did it just once because of the pain... It'll dig deep into your skin, so very careful while applying..and it hurts too...

So recently I found a better option.... Apple cider vinegar....

Try that with cotton wool and plastter over it.... It doesn't hurt that much... But when it's eating it..You'll feel done pain...

You'll see good result in 7 days with consistent usage

I used the advoca... But the stuff grew again. I couldn't purchase another cos of the lock down, I used apple cider vinegar and it worked well...

You can also use podophyllin cream, the red pack own... That also dries it off and peels it... But it is very scarce
I once used Podophyllin cream it worked but came back again.

Is Apple cider vinegar common? How much is it and where did you buy?

Yes! Nigerian men need to drop that male dominance bullshit. You both can't be working and you expect her to slave away in the kitchen all by herself while you watch television.. No no no.

Anyways, we'll get there some day, afterall the west had male dominance some decades ago before the rise of feminism breaking their women free from the shackles of male dominated oppression.

Crispels:
ON A FINAL NOTE:

Dating abroad is totally different from dating in Nigeria. There are lots of cultural differences and you must really understand these differences before shooting any shot - otherwise: you will make terrible mistakes that may ruin your reputation, mental health and growth. You may even be hated and ghosted by certain people. In America for instance, dating apps is a big deal and things happen so fast - compared to Nigeria where on the average, things take longer.

[s]
If you are a Nigerian guy and you think it is the sole responsibility of your girlfriend(wife) to cook and take care of the family - then your stupi**d patriarchy mentality will fail you big time abroad.
Most Nigerian - American girls dislike some Nigerian guys (particularly those who grew up in Nigeria) due to this kind of patriarchy and “male dominance” mentality. Many Nigerian - American girls as a result of strong upbringing by their families can cook really well(even our egusi and other Naija food) but they will hate you if you make it look like it’s their responsibility to cook for you all the time. You must also get to the kitchen - do the dishes, wash the meat, clean the tables and even cook some food as well! Everything is 50-50 in America!!! Your wife(or even girlfriend) is not your slave and it’s high time most Nigerian guys(even those based in Ibadan, Uyo, Kano and Enugu) start realizing this.

WE NEED TO TREAT OUR WOMEN LIKE QUEENS, JEWELS AND SUPPORT THEM IN THE KITCHEN, THEIR CAREERS AND IN EVERY OTHER AREA.

[/s]
Nonsense post! Because you are in America you now think their matriarchal society that has never worked for them is better than the society that God and nature bestowed on mankind that has proven to work for us? Nonsense again

Politics / High Chief Lulu-Briggs Died In Nigeria Before He Was Brought To Ghana - Court by HappyNigerian: 8:46pm On Mar 23, 2020
HIGH CHIEF O.B. LULU-BRIGGS DIED IN NIGERIA BEFORE HE WAS BROUGHT TO GHANA; CORNER COURT RULES

www.nairaland.com/attachments/11252134_img20200323wa0034_jpegb2ffbf809f50113d94a8f2353e62d96b

Accra: The Coroner Court presided over by Mrs. E.K. Barnes-Botchway ruled on Friday, March 20, 2020 that High Chief O.B. Lulu-Briggs died in Nigeria and not in Ghana as his widow, Mrs. Seinye Lulu-Briggs claimed.

The coroner court based its ruling on the fact that medical doctors were unanimous in their various statements to the Ghana Police that the Deceased was dead on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport Clinic on December 27, 2018 and his body showed a degree of stiffness, which indicates that "rigor mortis" had set in, a process that sets in between 2-4 hours after death.

This means that the Deceased died at least 2 hours before he was taken to the Airport Clinic and considering that the flying time between Nigeria and Ghana is about one hour, the Deceased died before arrival in Ghana. The Deceased therefore died in Nigeria.

The coroner also said that the autopsy report is inconclusive and cannot be relied upon, blaming the people on board the flight on the 27th of December, 2018 of negligence, considering the state of health of High Chief O.B. Lulu-Briggs.

The coroner said it is important for the Nigerian authorities to embark on investigation into the death of the High Chief, since he died in Nigeria.

The ruling of the Coroner Court virndicates those who have maintained all along that High Chief O.B. Lulu-Briggs died in Port Harcourt and his body was smuggled into Accra, Ghana by those who wanted to take possession of his death certificate and mortuary papers to administer his estate.

This ruling also explains the reason some persons never wanted a proper autopsy and inquest conducted into the sudden death of the Kalabari-Ijaw War Canoe Chief.

Below is a certified true copy of the judgment.

please kindly desist from having unprotected sex so you don't spread it... If possible for 2years so it can be rid off ur body by ur body system. As for the application.. Apply once a day for three days... Don't be surprised before the third day, it will fall off.. What you will do is, after applying today, before applying tomorrow, use a sandpaper that came with it to sandpaper gently on the warts in circular motion, if it is hard and no sign of falling, stop the sandpapering and apply the Avoca stick again... Hopefully on the second day while sandpapering, it should fall off...
I couldn't find it. I went to a pharmacy and they gave me cream podophylin and Virest

So I went thru this thread and followed up on the silver nitrate... I'm not the sure I'm having wart but it seems to me that I'm having...

I ordered the nitrate from the (my-medicine.com.... I paid 3500... With delivery fee... Totaling 4700)

According the to pattern the poster said we should follow, I did exactly... But a mistake (I didn't use Vaseline on the normal skin to protect it from the spread if it eventually spreads off).

Me in... The thing hurt like hell... But I'll tried some home remedy similar to this like garlic... I could bear the pain ...

In few minutes, the so called wart became black and hard... (that nitrate dey stain body ooo)..
Next day, all my skin don peel finish... It was so irritating... The nitrate liquid spread over my skin...chai... Wart was hard, by my healthy skin around it was messed up...I was only able to use it once...

To cut the long story short.. After 3/4 days, the stuff dug under the wart and peeled my skin from under, uprooting the wart.. It was so painful but it did it job...now I'm on healing process... Everything took 7 says..

I feel less pain, and I used it for penile bump, the thing peel my skin commot... Only once

The thing works, but it is too cost... The nitrate just be like biro mouth... If e break, 3500 don waste be that...

So it is so expensive for that very little quantity..

I didn't proof read to correct error... I'm too tired

The stuff dey work, you can try home remedy as garlic, Apple cider vinegar... But that na if you fit apply am well...

I'll go with the silver nitrate anytime.
Only posting this to help other people in this situation...

Hello sir, I have this shii scattered over my pee area.

I have question;

1. How many times should the nitrate be applied? Should it be once in 3 days or once every 3 days?

Pls this thing is getting me.irritated already

Family / Proud Dad Made 6 Month Baby Food In 5 Minutes by HappyNigerian: 1:50pm On Mar 19, 2020
A proud father shares this;

Babysitting isn’t an easy task, especially when your 6-month-old knows how to scatter your settings with crying when she is hungry!

Story of my life -I learnt to do homemade baby food in 5 minutes, as if I had been doing it since 1999.

It’s not funny but I will make the gist as interesting as I can.

Here we go.

Growing up was like daddies are not usually experts at making baby food but at least they do the feeding part well. Hmmmm…

Deola, our first child, changed it for me in such a dramatic way that it will take a lifetime to forget.

Yes, I have been helping out with feeding and other tasks when summoned. However, preparing meals and feeding our baby all alone has not hooked me like this before.

This particular afternoon ooo… Sweetheart went grocery shopping and Deola was about to sleep when she was about leaving the house.

At least it looked like she would sleep off quite soon.

So, I agreed to take charge till my madam came back hoping that baby girl would enjoy her sleep while she was away.

Little did I know that I had set myself up for mild drama.

Shortly after sweetheart left, baby girl shine her eyes to the fullest. Somehow, sleep walked away from her cute face.

I introduced biscuits and toys to keep her busy. It was working, I was happy.

I wasn’t a bad babysitter, after all. Abbi?

Few minutes later…. Story changed… Deola wanted more than biscuits…

I formed Wizkid. I formed Yemi Alade… Woefully, my talent failed me.

Baby girl was not having any of my dry performances. She wanted a nice meal.

Then, I realized that my Egungun done enter express finish. How moto no go jam am now?

Since Google has always been my friend, I walked up to his sister, YouTube. I asked her what’s up? Man badly needed to prepare 6 month baby food.

After sieving through a couple of videos, I found Nuttymeal Pudding Recipe.

Luckily for me, Jaden’s Nuttymeal was chillin’ somewhere in the house. That was how I followed the video ooo.

As the water was boiling, I was making paste with Jaden’s Nuttymeal in her plate.

She did not even send me… As if she knew that each time she screamed, my BP rose, she was dropping it like Mr Macaroni's skit.

I wasn’t doing well at all. I felt like I was punishing her for staying with only me at home. Everything was just annoying me.

As I poured the Nuttymeal paste in water on the fire, my phone rang.

Guess what? Honey was close by. …

ALAS, she was stuck in traffic about normally 6 minutes’ drive to the house. A naughty truck had broken down and had to be moved before she could get out there.

All my hopes of getting help in a few minutes time was dashed all over again.
I took heart. I kept stirring the paste in the pot as it was gradually becoming a proper meal.
I became gradually happy. I covered and left it on fire for a while to get done.

Meanwhile, baby girl was beginning to calm down. Guess she pitied me when she saw hot sweat trickling down my face out of perspiration.

3 minutes later, her food was ready!

She made my job easier. She was taking it as I was giving her.

Funny thing was she slept off almost immediately she finished eating.

Make I no lie, it pained me that nobody witnessed my pain and agony to tell me sorry dear.

I tried telling the story of how Deola dealt with me personally in her mum’s absence to her. But the fact that she was fast asleep as if she had been like that all day made my crybaby narration weak.

Anyways, I survived.

I made her a nice meal when she needed it. And that was all that matters.

I am better prepared now. My baby won’t cry next time she needs homemade food because I am a better dad now.

If you are claiming to be a proud dad and you have not made baby food in 5 minutes like me, find your mates elsewhere abeg. I no be your mate. Lol.

8 Best Movies To Stream On Showmax This Month

ROCKETMAN
Rocketman, the fantastical musical biopic on Sir Elton John, scooped this year’s Oscar for Best Original Song for I’m Gonna Love Me Again, co-written by Elton and his long-time lyricist Bernie Taupin.

Rock biopic meets musical fantasy in this fabulous rollercoaster of a movie about a little boy called Reginald Kenneth Dwight, who grew up to be one of the greatest musical icons of all time. It’s a celebration of the music, the dreams, and the larger-than-life persona that’s made Elton a legend. But it’s also the story of his struggle with addiction, and of his friendship with Bernie, which helped him through.

As Elton, Taron Egerton won a Golden Globe and was nominated for BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, People’s Choice and Teen Choice awards. The movie also stars BAFTA winner Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool), Golden Globe winner Richard Madden (Bodyguard, Game of Thrones), Golden Globe nominee Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World) and BAFTA winner Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’ Diary).

Rocketman was penned by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall and directed by double-BAFTA Award nominee Dexter Fletcher (who took Bohemian Rhapsody to completion after Bryan Singer was fired).

As the Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus puts it, “It's going to be a long, long time before a rock biopic manages to capture the highs and lows of an artist's life like Rocketman.”

:: 2020 Oscar, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner for Best Original Song for I’m Gonna Love Me Again
:: Rocketman was nominated for a Golden Globe, a People’s Choice Award and four BAFTAs
:: 89% critics score, Rotten Tomatoes
:: The 39th biggest box office hit of 2019 globally, raking in over $195m

THE WIFE
Celebrated author Joe Castleman is about to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. As he travels to Stockholm, he’s accompanied to the event by his wife Joan. Through almost forty years, Joan has played her role as the Great Man’s Wife with grace and diplomacy, supporting his career, championing his work, overlooking his indiscretions, and ultimately, herself. The Wife is a simmering, intimate study of a marriage, of compromise, betrayal and devotion.

Glenn Close received her seventh Oscar nomination, won a Golden Globe and was nominated for a BAFTA for her portrayal of Joan, with the London Evening Standard saying, “If ever a film belonged to an actor... this one belongs to Close.”

Oscar nominee Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Golden Globe winner Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), BAFTA nominee Harry Lloyd (The Theory of Everything, and Game of Thrones’ Viserys Targaryen) and Max Irons (Condor) also star, along with Close’s daughter, Annie Starke, who plays the younger Joan.

:: 2019 Golden Globe winner for Best Actress (Glenn Close)
:: Nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Actress (Glenn Close)
:: 85% critics rating, Rotten Tomatoes

AQUAMAN
Jason Momoa. There, we said it. What more do you need to know?
Seriously though, Aquaman tells the origin story of DC comic book hero Arthur Curry, who we saw in 2017’s Justice League. Born to Atlantean-queen mother Atlanna and a human father, Arthur has lived his whole life on land. But when his undersea half-brother, King Orm, threatens war on the surface dwellers, Arthur is called upon to fulfil his destiny and claim his rightful throne.

The cast includes Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (Dr. Chase Meridian in Batman Forever), Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin in 2002’s Spider-Man), Golden Globe nominee Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl in 2009’s Watchmen), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Cal Abar in the new Watchmen), action legend Dolph Lundgren (Konstantin Kovar in Arrow), and Amber Heard (who - spoiler alert! - shared the MTV Movie + TV Best Kiss Award with Jason Momoa), reprising her role as Justice League’s Mera.

The movie is directed by James Wan, who helmed Fast & Furious 7 (the Guinness World Record holder for grossing $1bn at the global box office in just 17 days) and is slated to direct Aquaman 2, announced for 2022.

“Momoa’s Aquaman isn’t tortured and conflicted; he’s a badass, and he digs it,” says Slate. “Wan not only embraces the inherent silliness of a hero whose signature power is talking to fish; he revels in it, finding the childlike awesomeness at its core.”

:: 2019 Teen Choice, Kids Choice, MTV Movie Awards, and Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films nominee
:: #5, highest grossing films of 2018 worldwide

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD
Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Oscar nominee Johnny Depp) has escaped and is gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Oscar nominee Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander (Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne). Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The movie is directed by David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling, who is also a producer. The cast also includes Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies), Carmen Ejogo (Selma, True Detective) and Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower).

Crimes of Grindelwald “feels like an upgrade from its predecessor, one that adds star power, introduces key characters and lays the foundation for a genuine ‘Wizarding World’ franchise,” says CNN, while Associated Press called it “often dazzling, occasionally wondrous and always atmospheric”.

:: #10, highest grossing films of 2018 worldwide
:: 2019 BAFTA, Teen Choice, European Film Awards, and Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films nominee

I, TONYA
This Oscar-winning comedy drama is based on the life of figure skater Tonya Harding and the scandal that ended her career. Harding was the first American woman to pull off a triple axel in competition, but her success was overshadowed by her implication in the attack on rival skater Nancy Kerrigan in 1994.

Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, and a second-time Oscar nominee for Bombshell) was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Harding, who never fitted the stereotype of what a ballerina was expected to be, and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes from the Avengers movies) plays her dodgy ex-husband Jeff. But it’s Allison Janney (The Help, Hairspray, The West Wing), who skates away with all the glory in an Oscar-winning performance as Harding’s viciously ambitious mother, LaVona.

NPR calls I, Tonya “the triple axel of based-on-true-story movies,” while the Wall Street Journal says it’s “an antidote to those feel-good films about innately noble athletes who manage to triumph over impossible odds.”

MOLLY’S GAME
Molly’s Game is based on the true story of former Olympic-class skier Molly Bloom, who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game on little more than her wits until the FBI arrested her in a high-profile, middle-of-the-night sting that threatened everyone from Hollywood stars to the Russian mob.

Molly’s Game is the directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin, who created The West Wing and won an Oscar for The Social Network. He also wrote the script, which was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.

IndieWire calls Molly’s Game a “staccato and silver-tongued drama that boasts a zillion killer lines, at least two of the year's most exciting performances, and a rare understanding of the difference between power and pride.” The Los Angeles Times says, “Chastain draws us so deeply into Molly's lightning-speed thought processes that you can almost see her synapses firing, making Molly's Game not just a biographical portrait but a genuine thriller of the mind.” And Time Out praised Molly’s portrayal “as a complex and razor-sharp character in a world dominated by entitled mansplainers,” saying, “Forget Rounders -- here's a poker movie to go all-in on.”

Politics / Nigerian Police: A Brutal Reality - Oke Umurhohwo by HappyNigerian: 1:00pm On Dec 07, 2019
Nigerian Police - A (Brutal) Reality

Anytime you visit a police station in Nigeria, you're most certainly drawn to an inscription boldly pasted on their walls that "The police is your friend". But the weight of that inscription is mostly thrown in serious doubt by the conduct of personnel of the force.

The sight of security agents, anywhere, should bring comfort and a high sense of safety for citizens but in Nigeria, the scenario is different. The impunity of men in uniform has stirred so much distrust in the minds of citizens, that the average citizen has serious doubt if the police exist for their safety. Whether on the road or elsewhere, the police are becoming dreaded by citizens, who have seen those who should protect them turnaround to be their tormentor.

That is something that has been going on for some time now and public outcry has received little or no attention from the authority. Last year, the brazen abuse of privilege and unethical conduct of some Policemen ignited calls from Nigerians that the Nigerian force should be reformed to restore the lost confidence of the public.

It got more intense early this year when men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, infamously known as SARS, riddled the body of an armless citizen, Johnson Kolade, with bullets and ended the life of the promising young man. That incident worried almost every Nigerian and I recalled penning an article where I joined calls to #EndSARS 'for all of us to be safe'.

But here we're today and nothing seems to have changed. Wednesday, December 4th, 2019 was yet another show of impunity by men in uniform, who not only failed in their duties to keep citizens safe but abducted me and several other Nigerians without any justification.

With the abduction and infringement of our fundamental human rights, policemen who unjustifiably harassed us and hounded us in detentions without probable cause demonstrated a new low in the depravity of the attacks on citizens. That was one of the most terrifying moments of my life as I was left stupefied that people who are paid to keep us safe turned themselves into vicious elements.

Before my unpalatable experience, I've heard stories of Nigerians unlawfully picked on the streets, beaten and extorted or maimed by the Nigerian police. On the spurious excuses of fighting crimes, police officers swoop on citizens and subject them to unwarranted assaults just in their usual practice of extorting them. That was exactly what transpired last Wednesday when police officer abducted me and colleagues without probable cause.

As usual, they refused any sensible explanation and even turndown several attempts to present our identity cards. They moved from street to street and round up anyone in their sight when there was no reason to suggest any wrongdoing. It was the most despicable thing I've ever experienced and it became so apparent that the impunity and uncanny attitude of the police have reached its peak.

Right in a Black Maria, I could count not less than 25 people who were in the same ordeal as me and my colleagues. It was a rough experience and one that I would never have thought would come from the police. This shocked me very much as I was vibrating right in the vehicle and when we finally got to the Lagos Task Force, it dawned on me that this was recklessness taken too far.

From the ludicrous claim that we were "miscreants" as justification for abduction to the terrible condition of the cell we were forced to pass the night, it was clear that Police isn't our friend. The maltreatment we suffered for doing nothing has once again brought to the burner the disturbing trend of impunity by police officers.

That police officers 'raid' streets for law-abiding citizens and hauled them in detentions when no crime was committed is something that should worry Nigerians. Quite disturbing that rather than securing Nigerians, the impunity usually displayed by policemen has posed them as the dangerous evil they are initially meant to curb.

It also makes clear that the authorities have failed to end impunity in the police force despite public outcry. This year alone, incidents of police harassment and brutality of citizens are too numerous to mention and more of such may still be happening as you read this. Yet, there has been little or no reprimand to serve as deterrence.

While it is an accepted fact that the police can make arrests, the habit of using their force strength to oppress citizens without justification is an overreach that needs to be curbed. Brutality is a barbaric tactic that has no role in any civilized society and the Nigerian police should ease itself of people who went overboard in their unreasonable quest to extort Nigerians. The Constitution, which is the grundnorm of our society, very much confers on citizens, the freedom of movement and exercising such should not be a crime that put one in detention.

Understandably, my plight and those my colleagues suffered in the hand of policemen, had intensified calls to end impunity. That is the necessary thing considering that Nigerians could no longer rely on their tormentor for their safety. Security should be done with responsibility, not becoming the same threat the people are running away from. Even as I write, the fate of many Nigerians who are hounded in detention is still unknown. We must end the impunity with the Police before it is too late.

Politics / Engr. Musa Wada Accept Defeat, Congratulate Gov. Bello by HappyNigerian: 1:58pm On Nov 17, 2019
Breaking
Engr. Musa Wada accept defeat, congratulate Gov. Bello

Its Time To Move On

Every General knows when its time to move on. He knows when to call off the battle and prepare for the next war. Above all, he knows when he has given the best and it did not yield the expected results. Perhaps, God, who rules in the affairs of men decided otherwise.

Ever since I decided to run for the governorship seat of Kogi State, the entire exercise has been trailed by controversies. My character has been maligned and I have been blackmailed and betrayed by many, including some people very close to me. In some other instances I was humiliated. But I did not despair or faint. I took it all in my strides, believing that it is the nature of politics in this part of the world.

To prove the genuineness of my ambition I appealed to men and women of goodwill. I spoke on the need for everyone, not only members of my political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to give me a chance. And there is no doubt that we had a good team and one of the best campaigns, spreading to every part of the state.

However, reports from the field in yesterday's election has left me very sad. It turned out that I have become the sole reason for a bitter ethnic war. Fathers turned against their children, brothers against sisters and cousins against uncles.

This is not to say that there were no genuine voters in yesterday's election. Many of our supporters turned out in droves, eager to effect the change we promised and represent. May God bless and reward them all for the tremendous sacrifice and unprecedented commitment to our cause.

Yet, we cannot afford to close our eyes to the reality that stares us in the face. The bitter truth, from reports from the field indicates that our goal may have been abridged midstream. And even though close confidants and acquaintances believe that it is still early to give up, I am old and experienced enough to know when I have been overpowered by a strongman.

Yes, we may have been bitter rivals and ran very bitter campaigns. I was particularly hopeful that the election would go my way. But I'm not naive as not to know when I'm losing as well as when I have been defeated. Now that the ovation is still loud and the euphoria of the election is still high is the best time to drop the towel.

Having considered all options available to me and irrespective of what actions elders and our party may take in the immediate future, I have come to a conclusion that Governor Yahaya Bello is the winner of yesterday's election, no matter how contrived. As in all contest, a winner has emerged, even the outcome may not be pleasing to us.

I hereby congratulate my brother and friend, Governor Yahaya Bello, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). I wish him a fruitful second term in office and pray that some of wrongs and issues which came up during the campaigns would be effectively tackled this time around.

It is likewise my advice that Governor Bello should be magnanimous in victory. He should take steps to heal the wounds and take steps to reconcile the state across party lines. Kogi belongs to us all and he must allow all, irrespective of ethnic, religious or other social diversities to coexist in harmony, tolerance and mutual exchange of ideas. We must make Kogi work for all.

To all leaders and members of our party, supporters and other well wishers, I thank you for believing in our project and standing till the end. My fervent prayer is that God shall not abandon you at the point of need. Rest assured that I remain eternally grateful for what you have done for me.

Above all, let no one consider my stand as an act of cowardice. The late philosopher and music maestro, Bob Marley rightly stated that: "Its he who fights and runs away that lives to fight another day". Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan further counseled that no election is worth the life another human being. For me, this chapter is closed. Tomorrow comes with the morning. There are many victories ahead.

Politics / PDP Berates APC For Attacking Gov. Makinde, Musa Wada, Other PDP Leaders by HappyNigerian: 4:43pm On Nov 15, 2019
November 15, 2019

Press Statement

PDP Berates APC For Attacking Gov. Makinde, Musa Wada, Other PDP Leaders

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) berates the All Progressives Congress (APC) for sending armed thugs to invade the venue of the meeting of its leaders, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the PDP candidate, Engr. Musa Wada, in Lokoja on Friday.

The party says that several hooded APC thugs, armed with automatic rifles and other dangerous weapons, invaded the venue of the meeting which had Governor Makinde, Engr. Wada, his running mate, Hon. Samuel Aro, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, as well as other party chieftains in attendance.

It took the resistance of the security personnel attached to Governor Makinde to save the situation, which would have turned calamitous, as the people of Kogi who were around the venue were already poised for a stiff confrontation.

The PDP says the APC ought to have known by now that their reliance on thugs and violence cannot thrive, as the people are ready to defend their state in this election.

The party therefore urges in the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu to caution the APC as well as put every measure in place to check the activities of APC’s thugs so as to ensure a hitch free, transparent and credible election on Saturday.

The PDP calls on the people of Kogi state to remain alert and resolute in their determination to assert their will despite the machinations designed to undermine their spirit at the election.

It also states that Nigerians should hold the APC and Governor Yahaya Bello responsible should any harm whatsoever befall any PDP member during the period of the election.

Politics / Kogi: Withdraw CSP Musa Now Or Be Blamed For Violence, PDP Tells IGP by HappyNigerian: 8:25pm On Nov 13, 2019

Press Statement

Kogi Guber: Withdraw CSP Musa Now or Be Ready to Take Blame for Violence, PDP Tells IGP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to immediately reverse the provocative and brazen deployment of Governor Yahaya Bello’s former ADC, CSP Usman Musa, to coordinate security in the November 16 governorship election.

The party says the IGP should be ready to accept responsibility for any breakdown of law and order as well as directly bear the guilt for any loss of life in any part of the state during the election, if he fails to withdraw the CSP Musa, who have since been transferred to Lagos state.

The PDP informs the IGP that the people of Kogi state are already aware of how CSP Musa has been compromised and directed by the governor and the APC to use excessive force, intimidate and arrest voters, aid APC thugs to unleash violence and ensure that votes do not count.

We have also been made aware of directives by the APC and agents of Governor Yahaya Bello to shoot and kill during the election to aid the manipulation of the electoral process for the APC.

The PDP therefore calls on the IGP to note that the deployment of CSP Musa will lead to avoidable violence, bloodletting and extra-judicial killings, adding that the IGP and the police hierarchy should be ready to bear the guilt of any loss of life, if CSP Musa is not withdrawn from Kogi elections.

The party counsels the IGP not to allow Governor Bello and the APC to entangle him in their plots and soil his hands with innocent blood through the deployment of CSP Musa in the election.

The PDP further counsels the IGP to bear in mind that the people of Kogi state already know the brief CSP Musa has from Governor Bello and the APC.

The party therefore urges the IGP to avert the looming violence in the Kogi election by immediately withdrawing CSP Musa and moving him out of the state.

The PDP commends the people of Kogi state for remaining at alert in their readiness to use all means, available in a democracy and within the law, to ensure the exercise of their franchise as well as to defend their votes to the very end, no matter what.

The chairman of the Edo State Chapter of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Dan Osi Obih is working towards destroying the fortunes of the PDP in the State.

In view of the above provision, Chief Dan Obih is only entitled to eight (cool years as Chairman of the Party at the state level and no more, but he is currently doing his twelfth (12) year in office.

One of the party stakeholder who spoke on condition of anonymity told newsmen in Benin City that, if the activities of Dan Obih is not checked, that the PDP may not be able to compete favourably in the coming Gubernatorial Election in Edo state.

There are also reports that the recent purported suspension of some party leaders in Edo state on account of anti-party activities are plots by the Dan Obih supporters to silence opinion leaders in the state.

However, the National Headquarters of the Party in Abuja is yet to respond to the underhand activities of Chief Dan Obih and his fellow collaborators in Edo State.
