It’s the beginning of a new year and that means new bills and more responsibilities and thinking back at last year just gives me some sort of joy at how I have planned this year for my bills. My family lives in Ibadan and I live in Lagos and I must confess that it is such a struggle to pay their bills while working in Lagos here. I am the first child so I have to send my family money every month, and my siblings every week. My family DSTV bill is also something I have to do monthly while I also ensure that all my siblings get airtime on their phone every week. It is such a traumatic experience when I remember that as I am planning all this small small money that when you calculate it, it becomes big money, I have to also plan bank charges inside of it as well. I moved out of the house at a point to make ends meet as the first son of the family especially as my parents are getting old and I’m their only source of livelihood as it is right now, some people say you do not owe your parents anything but well, I do not believe in this and I take care of my parents and see it as my duty and what I owe to them to do. Schools have resumed, Nishola, my sister needs to go back and would need fees and other miscellaneous expenses. Femi my brother is preparing for his WAEC to enable him get into the university. My parents of course have medical bills to be sorted as well every month. When I calculate this in total every month including bank charges, it is over 100,000 monthly that I spend last year not until this January when someone mentioned how PalmPay gives people rewards when they do transactions. At first, and as usual, I did not believe it but that is not the point of the thread. The point of writing this thread is really to ask, how do African Children deal with the numerous bills that they have to pay for the family and friends?

Good day distinguished sons and daughters of our beloved state, Ekiti State. First and foremost, I want to thank all those who have reached out to me in the last couple of days over the recent events rocking the foundation of our Party. I do not take your love for granted. It is a great honour seeing the volume of love and concerns being shown by these loved ones. May God Almighty remember you and continue to bless you in all your undertakings. The events of the past few days have generated serious ripples in our party and among members of the party, particularly after the endorsement of the current Party Chairman, Hon. Bisi Kolawole as the preferred aspirant by our leader, former governor Peter Fayose ahead of the party's primaries, which has given birth to questions challenging the morality and legality of the process that led to the decision. I had taken time off to reflect on the issues involved and following biblical injunction that exhorts us to be quick in hearing but slow in speaking or reacting. I sincerely acknowledge H E' s leadership role and right in the choice and endorsement of Hon Bisi Kolawole as the most preferred aspirant from Osoko Political Assembly. I'm not and cannot be grieved by this. H E had also similarly favoured me in the recent past. My coming out to indicate my interest in the 2022 gubernatorial contest is based on Divine leading and not just on personal human ambition. I'm constrained to seek God's face on every subsequent actions and until I received anything to the contrary, the aspiration remains intact. Whatever happens, H. E, Peter Fayose remains my leader, whom I have adored and respected in my humble capacity as his deputy for 4years; who in-turn believes in my capability to lead our state and provide good governance for the Fountain of Knowledge. H E should be rest assured that by God's grace, my respect and honour for his person and leadership can not diminish. As a matter of right, he has spoken on his choice and preference concerning who flags the party's gubernatorial ticket this time around and also on the right of other aspirants to pursue further their ambition if they so desire. In all these, may God's will be done. Notwithstanding, I have resolved that I will continue to maintain a cordial relationship with my boss because I have learnt and will continue to learn so much from him. Therefore, I appeal to all my supporters never to disrespect our leader, Dr Ayo Fayose. As Omoluabi, we shall continue to show him deserving respect even as we strategically and logically pursue our aspirations. One of the things that I have learnt from and under H. E Peter Ayodele Fayose is the fact that "power is never served a la carte". This event of endorsement is a stepping stone for us in our desire and quest to build a virile party and an enviable future for our dear State. Consequent to the above, I call on all party leaders, stakeholders and supporters not to relent in their support for our aspiration. Nothing good comes easily but I am promising that together, we shall build a prosperous state for ourselves and generations yet to come. Thank you. God bless you. God bless our leader, Osokomole. God Bless the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, former deputy governor, Ekiti State

A non-profit organisation, IPAS, says that Nigeria is witnessing a rise in sexual violence, including rape and incest. This is contained in a communique issued at the end of a three-day media training for journalists on Women’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights/Global Gag Rule (GGR). InformNG reports that the media training held in Ibadan was sponsored by IPAS, an international organisation that focuses on expanding access to safe abortion and contraceptive care. GGR or the Mexico City policy is a United States government policy that blocks U.S. federal funding for non-governmental organisations that provide abortion counselling or referrals, advocate to decriminalise abortion, or expand abortion services. The communique signed by Country Director of IPAS, Mr Lucky Palmer, said that sexual violence is contributing to incidence of unwanted pregnancies, especially among adolescents in the country. The document stated that unwanted pregnancies have resulted to people seeking unsafe abortion procedure, which is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in the country. According to the communique, although the Nigerian government has signed and ratified many international and regional legal instruments that protect the sexual rights and human rights of women. Many of these frameworks have not been domesticated. It said that many NGOs, working to promote Women’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (WSRH&R) in the country, were unaware of the exceptions to GGR. It stated that these NGOs do not provide abortion counselling, referrals in cases of rape, incest and when the woman’s life is endangered. The communique further stated that the only legal document guiding abortion practice in the country is the 1861 Abortion Law of Nigeria, which does not take into consideration the realities of today and the issues arising thereof. The communique then urged the Federal Government to domesticate all international and regional legal frameworks that promote WSRH&R. “The participants hereby resolved that government at all levels should take the health of women as priority. “They also resolved that the government at all levels should increase funding for WSRH&R. “Nigerians, including the media, should join the global campaign against GGR. “Rigorous awareness should be created on the exceptions to the GGR, to enable CSOs provide services to victims of unwanted pregnancies as a result of rape and incest among other exceptions. “The participants also resolved that the government should provide free medical care and support for women and girls who are victims of sexual violence to preserve, promote and protect their sexual and reproductive health. “Focus should not only be centred on the executive arm of government but also on the legislature, to ensure they make legislations that promote and protect WSRH&R,” it stated. The communique also called on journalists to step up their support for NGOs working on WSRH&R https://www.inform.ng/post/rape-incest-now-rampant-in-nigeria |
Oil prices recovered on Tuesday, erasing overnight losses, as investors moved into risk assets and away from the safe-haven U.S. dollar, which tumbled to multi-year lows. Brent crude futures climbed 49 cents or 1.1 per cent to $45.77 a barrel at 0406 GMT. The U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 37 cents or 0.9 per cent to $42.98 a barrel. Both benchmark contracts fell around one per cent on Monday on worries about oil oversupply, with global demand stuck below pre-COVID levels. The U.S. dollar was last down 0.04 per cent at 92.146 against a basket of currencies, after hitting its lowest since May 2018 in the wake of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy shift on inflation announced last week. “It (the policy shift) really cements the fact that you’re looking at negative real rates for the U.S. which will not be great for the U.S. dollar. “That’s good for commodities,” said Louis Crous, Chief Investment Officer at BetaShares, an Australian exchange-traded funds provider. The weakening U.S. dollar makes oil and other commodities priced in dollars more attractive to global buyers. Overall, the market remains focused on the stalled recovery in fuel demand as countries continue to battle the coronavirus pandemic with rolling COVID-19 lockdowns, analysts said. “This has created plenty of uncertainty about whether demand for transportation fuels will ever return to normal,” ANZ Research said in a note. Ahead of the release of U.S. stockpile data from the American Petroleum Institute industry group, a Reuters’ poll found analysts expect U.S. crude stocks fell by about two million barrels in the week to Aug. 28. Gasoline inventories are seen falling by 3.6 million barrels, while distillate inventories, which include diesel and heating oil, are expected to drop by 1.5 million barrels, six analysts polled by Reuters estimated. https://www.inform.ng/post/oil-price-rises-as-usd-falls |
Mr Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, says the Federal Government has approved the training of over 5,000 youths in different vocations. Dare said this during his visit to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, at his Popoyemoja Palace in Ibadan. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dare had visited the monarch to felicitate with him on his 92nd birthday. The minister also said there was a marching order for contractors working on federal government roads in Oyo State to return to site. Dare, who noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the laid down programmes of the Federal Government, however, said work had now commenced across the various sectors of the economy. “I want to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for giving me the opportunity to serve in his cabinet from my dear state, Oyo State. “Sir, because of COVID-19, all the laid down programmes of our president was stopped. But since last three weeks, he has been approving the programmes. “If you recall, when I became a minister, you sent some youths to me for employment, but today we have received approval to train 5,000 youths in the state. “I want the palace to nominate one person to liaise with my office and myself to carry out the programme,” he said. Dare added that approval had also been given to commence work on Saki water works following the efforts Mr Adebayo Shittu, the immediate past Minister of Communications. The minister, who pleaded for forgiveness for not visiting the monarch since he became minister, congratulated the Olubadan on his 92nd birthday and wished him long life in good health. https://www.inform.ng/post/fg-to-engage-5000-youths-of-oyo-state-in-vocational-training |
The Federal Government says the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) reforms are geared towards enhancing Nigeria’s high ranking in World Bank Ease of Doing Business (EODB) index. Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, said this on Friday in Keffi, at a workshop on ‘Improvement of Business Enabling Environment and Industrial Policy Growth’. InformNG recalls that PEBEC was established in July 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari to remove constraints and bureaucratic bottlenecks to doing business in Nigeria and make the country progressively easier to start and grow business. Nigeria presently ranks 131 out of 190 countries on the World Bank EODB index moving up 15 places from 146th position. Sani-Gwarzo, while declaring the two-day workshop opened, said that PEBEC organisation had put together reforms geared toward making it more convenient for business owners including local businesses to thrive. “World Bank rank economies according to so many criteria but today the most important set of criteria is the EODB, while high EODB ranking indicates a regulatory climates that is conducive for local businesses. “PEBEC organisation put together reforms geared toward making it more convenient for business owners to thrive by removing the constraints and bureaucratic bottlenecks to doing business in Nigeria. “This allows pioneer businesses to enter specific areas with inclusive growth potential, especially in agriculture, health, electricity among others,” the permanent secretary said. In addition, he said the President on August 7, also assented to the Companies Allied Matters Bill, 2020 recently passed by the national assembly. According to him, this important piece of legislation therefore, repealed and replaced the extant Companies And Allied Matters Act, 1990 with several corporate legal innovations geared toward enhancing Ease of Doing Business rankings. “This Ministry is the focal implementing Agency of government saddled with responsibility of promoting EODB and promotion of Industrial policy growth hence it puts together the sensitisation workshop in the North Central Geo-Political Zone to be replicated in other zones. ” Soon Nigeria will have regulations for businesses and stronger protection of property rights, especially in enforcing contracts, starting a business, registering property, paying taxes with borders taking cue from the World Bank reform activites under EODB,” he said. In a remark, Mr Alabi Samuel, Director, Human Resources Management of the ministry, said the theme of the workshop was appropriate in view of present reality confronting Nigeria as a nation emphasising the need to diversify sources of revenue in order to survive. He said the nation must concentrate more on comparative advantaged sectors rather than depending solely on oil. According to him, the mandate of the ministry is to formulate policies, that will help create wealth and employment, reduce poverty and ensure enhanced service delivery in a manner that will stimulate domestic economy through industrialisation, trade and investment. Alabi explained that the ministry has been the implementing agency charged with onerous responsibility of stimulating growth, expanding industrial base of the nation and ensure implementation of policies. The workshop is organised to build the capacity of the staff and critical stakeholders as players and active participants to be equipped as ambassadors of EODB to promote business sensitisation in the grassroots. https://www.inform.ng/post/fg-targets-world-banks-ranking-on-ease-of-doing-business

The CBN made this known in a circular signed by Dr Ozoemena Nnaji, Director Trade and Exchange Department, and addressed to authorised dealers and BDC operators on Thursday. The bank said the step was part of efforts to enhance accessibility to foreign exchange, particularly to travellers following the announcement of the limited resumption of international flights by Minister of Aviation. “The CBN hereby wishes to inform the general public that gradual sales of foreign exchange to licensed BDC operators will commence with effect from Sept. 7. “Consequently, purchase of foreign exchange by BDCs shall be on Mondays and Wednesdays in the first instance.
