duni04: Simple, because they never come back! Their exploits are for CNN and BBC. They rarely come back to contribute anything to Nigeria. That's why illiterates and whatnots from the north are ruling. I heard an argument the other day from someone about Nigerians being renowned for their exploits world over and then Nigeria being in a mess. Its almost as if Nigerians believe their academic achievements should automatically make the lives of Nigerians at home better. It doesn't work that way. Even if we have Nigerians leading the best ivy league schools in the world, and they prefer to stay back in America and the UK, Nigeria doesn't benefit anything from them. When these Nigerians abroad start to learn that it is good to give back to their communities with their knowledge and resources, that is when Nigeria will actually benefit from them. As of now, their achievements are personal and of no benefit to anyone in Nigeria.
How about those that came back and have been robbed killed and cheated.
My father came back 40 years ago after his PHD from one of the top 20 Universities in the world.
He regrets that decision today!
Deeply regrets it!
You can never do better than the environment you are in, and in this life everybody is trying to be all he can before he dies.
If these kids don't go back to Nigeria, who can blame them?
alyarmouk: UK where I reside don't pay Interns. America dnt pay interns. get ur facts straight n stop masquerading under social media anonymity to spew trash..from the gutter cum mouth of yours
UK doesn't pay house officers? And the US too?!
What kind of rubbish won't we hear?
Get out of here?
You really lack exposure! If you like live in Buckingham Palace.
alyarmouk: Oga get d Bleep out if you cant disprove it wif fact. all ds small boys, if una don buy data 100 naira, na to use am dey challenge una father
You are very uncouth and silly.
Disprove what with Who?
You?
Your lack of exposure is so obvious and your arrogance won't let you see it.
Name the countries that don't pay their intern Doctors?
Unfortunately it's an anonymous forum, so anybody can come online and act tough.
I don't have anything to prove to you-- read more and travel more ( that's if you have been anywhere before).
lebienconnu: Covid-19 is still very much arround. I have lost 2 patients within the past 24 hours to covid-19. The presentation is very classical, plumetting SPO2 , respiratory distress and hypotension. Diabetes patients present in hyperglycaemic state.
Bros check that hypotension-- dey don get PE join!
Zeeknow3245: Until we admit that Nigeria is going overboard we won't have peace. They're over 500 minor procedures a GP can do but CS isn't s Crux of the matter. My guy never you call CS common it is an Insult to trained professionals who have been in the business of women health. You said "South African"Model and you listed "rural" that's understandable. Do you want to know how many people have suffered from post "CS" after wrong surgery? Guy don't call medical procedure "common". People do die from CS both in the hospital or after the procedure. Do the needful and refer people no ooo Dem no go hear. I don't want to just drag generalist name to the mud abeg. I don't care about how extensive the teachings are refer your patient to the right specialist. I don't want to talk about my own numerous experience here about General Practicioners in Nigeria. The US people are even saying that "Aah the new graduates are already doing tough surgery" what tough surgery? Interns in many cases are not even allowed to even do many procedures "You watch, answer questions". In the US there is patient doctor confidentiality here very limited. Nigeria want to copy South Africa, UK, US,China,India. Let's just stick to one abeg I don tire
Are Family Physicians not trained to do Cesareans?
Why don't you stick to what you know?
...and yes, I will call a CS common.
Ethiopia has an initiative where Nurses are trained to repair Vaginal Fistula. The first woman trained was not even learned-- she was an illiterate trained by white missionaries and she trained thousands in her life Time.
Mozambique has Nurses performing Cesareans and they have halved their maternal mortality rates.
In Ghana, you won't be signed off as a house officer without 10 Cesareans.
In Medical School you are even supposed to take 10 vagunal deliveries or you won't get signed off.
Bottom line is training.
If you are trained to do something, why not?
About complications, it can happen to anybody at anytime.
I have seen old seasoned gynaes have complications, so what?
You are not a Docotor, not in the health sector and you obviously no nothing about it!
To think you believe interns only answer questions and observe...
Zeeknow3245: Did you see "minor surgeries" in my write up? the word "minor". Nigeria General Practicioners even do CS now. Is it Legal? My argument was her saying "Any Doctor with MBBS degree can perform surgery"
What is the Big deal in a CS?
You should learn about the South African model.
They do youth service too, where you are flung to the ends of the country and might be the only Doctor for miles...
During your 2 years housemanship, you should have learnt enough to be able to perform spinal anaesthesia and cut someone open for surgery.
Family medicine training in Nigeria is quite extensive and they are trained to do surgeries-- you are a Generalist.
Many Private Hospital operators however don't do this training which makes their services substandard
Zeeknow3245: Wrong madam. Not any Doctor Madam. A Cardiologist doesn't perform surgery, A Neurologist doesn't perform surgery but some procedures so stop saying wrong things. You are going for an Hernia operation and you're expecting a General Practicioner to do surgery for you? A paediatrician doesn't perform Surgery but a Paediatric Surgeon. A Pathologist doesn't perform Surgery. A General Practicioner doesn't have any right whatsoever to tear you up but do minor surgeries but this is Nigeria;
In Nigeria, General Practitioners ( Family Medicine Specialists) are trained to do some Surgeries, including Herniorrhaphies.
Benwems: Nursing practitioners are basically in the USA where they run their clinics and diagnose and treat. You seen to be the person jealous here because I clearly stated that Nigerian consultants in the UK studio to medicine (MBBS) in the UK. Find out and get your facts right. Nigerian doctors doing GP in UK are mostly the ones who get employed from Nigeria here through work agencies in the Uk. They are mostly or not always given GP and emergency and they sign contracts too. So get your facts right.
And Hell NO, I’m not jealous of anybody. My dad is a medical doctor and two of my sisters are doctors. One in Nigeria the other in USA. I’m an engineer and I’m in the UK. I love engineering and it was my dream to always be an engineer. I justly speak the truth and state obvious facts.
Oga you dey lie!
A Nigerian Doctor just doesn't up and leave to start working as a GP in the UK?
Benwems: I really don’t know if they use the term house officer but she’s doing her intern or whatever they call there and she’s not been paid. I would try to get more accurate details from here. Plus in 2009, my first cousins was doing his residency in USA as an emergency doctor, he told us they don’t pay resident doctors in USA but we didn’t believe and I’m not very sure but I will also ask my sister.
There is nothing like House officer there. If she is not being paid find out the SPECIFIC circumstances e.g. is she a SUPERNUMERARY? That is not the case for interns generally. They ARE PAID and paid VERY WELL
Benwems: I don’t know about India but house officers are not paid in USA. My sister is doing her intern in USA. And you are misinforming people. The issue is registrars (especially senior registrars) and consultants do not like working. At the end the push the work load to junior registrars and interns. But instead of tackling the issue at hand, you are blackmailing and lying on social media saying interns are suffering and yet no salary like it’s the Nigeria government that made them to be suffering.
omonnakoda: What has registrar going to bed or not got to do with the issue here. There is a huge difference between Shift work and on-call work and that is a working pattern issue, nothing to do with the issue on this thread You cannot reason properly and you and your father's biography is irrelevant. I am just correcting the falsehoods you are putting out there.
The simple fact is that before doctors become specialists they work . They perform JOBs such as running routine out patient clinics, and manage wards. They are supposed to be under "supervision" which may be daily , weekly or less frequently depending on the nature of the work in question Should they be paid for that work. Yes or No?
That is the subject of discussion here not those wild and irrelevant stories you are telling us You say you have been to India. Are House Officers paid in India?
Benwems: You are the person misinforming people And you the person talking trash. Registrars on night shift are not meant to go to bed. No talking trash. It is because an average Nigerian is gullible that is the reason you doctors and people Brian wash them. Your talking of registrars becoming consultants, they learn from their consultants, as questions, read their books, consultants explain to them the diagnosis and prognosis with time the gather sufficient experience with the number of cases they have seen. Write required exams and if they pass become consultants. I will not argue with you. My father is a medical doctor from Germany. He’s a consultant and a professor. I’m not talking out of ignorance. I have also been to India and seen how their health system is run. Lying that resident doctors are the driving force of the health world wide is a big lie. People go to specialist for consultation not registrars. What happens is that there is usually 1-2 registrars with the consultant Learning from the specialist. It’s only in Nigeria , people consultant registrars because the consultants have refused to come to work. In the consulting room, it’s usually you and the specialist. You can even politely tell the consultant that you want some privacy that you want the registrar to leaving and the registrar will leave. I have done the twice. No big deal. It’s in the theatre that they are most needed to gain one on one experience and knowledge. Stop the lies and propaganda.
Oga, na oshi you dey talk!
Pure oshi!
So a surgeon or an interventional Cardiology trainee will learn by just asking questions and observing?
You dey reason at all?
On a theatre list, who performs most of the surgeries-- resident or consultant?
You insisting Registrars are not the spine of the Hospital shows your ignorance!
If you like, make your papa be Ben Carson or Mengele, na big oshi you dey talk!
Benwems: Mr doctor, as an intern you have no business been called for emergencies especially at odd hours of the day. It is the work of registrars (resident doctors in the hospital). Blame the failed system mostly on the CMD and governing council of the hospitals in Nigeria. Everybody likes to do oga in Nigeria so the small registrars push the work to you the intern because an average Nigeria does not want to work but to collect salary. Consultants shift their job to senior registrars. Senior registrars shift their job to junior registrars Junior registrars shift their job to interns (house officer)
Most we blame government for everything in this country? Blame the hospital management and your senior colleagues. Also blame the Nigerian ‘I am oga attitude’
An intern doesn't have a business being called for an Emergency?
Who are you abeg, and what do you know?
You should see house-officers abroad leading a Cardiac arrest Call.
If the Registrar is in theatre and someone is poorly, they will wait for the Registrar abi?
Once you are trained at something and good at it, nobody cares about your level.
Una get little or no knowledge, dey open mouth anyhow.
FunkyAlhaji2015: Oga doctors on NYSC are not house officers. You google to understand housemanship is first.
Secondly Nigeria is one of few countries in the world that pays house officers. House officers are doctors in training, they do not perform any role in the hospital without supervision.
In the U.S. students pay to enter housemanship. If doctors are demanding we treat them like it is done in other climes then we must start from somewhere.
Benwems: Most, I repeat, Most Nigerian doctors are not doing well abroad. They are mostly General practitioners or emergency doctors (even Nigerian consultant doctors) are emergency doctors in UK, they are not allowed specialty. The Nigerian doctors that are specialist doctors are those that schooled abroad(did their BMMS abroad) and did their residency abroad and are brilliant are the ones doing well not the ones that left Nigeria as doctors. So kindly stop lying and misleading people. Nigerian doctors are liars and propagandists. Even the UK jobs Nigerian doctors dying for. It’s G.P, Emergency department that’s where they work. But they come online and lie like they are in specialized fields.
How bitter you are?!
Nigerian Doctors are not doing well abroad?
You dont know Emergnecy Medicine is a Specialty and they have Consultants?
...and your GP is a family medicine specialist also.
In the US and UK, I know Nigerian Neurosurgeons, Cardiologists, Radiologists, Orthopaedics Surgeons Anaesthetists, General Surgeons, Paediatricians... any speciality, you can think of!
They all had their MBBS in Nigeria. and are making good money and exceeding expectations.
You are just bitter and I hope this doesn't translate to other areas of your life.
Do something with your life and stop looking for how to pull others down.
Benwems: You are talking rubbish. Who is a bloody intern? It’s like you think most people here are illiterates. An intern have no business where’s a minor or major surgery. He’s duty to go for messages, bring spirit, bring syringe. Your job is to stay at the bad and look. It’s the duty of the consultant and registrar to do surgery and give health care. An intern’s job is to observe and ask one or two brilliant questions. So an intern does not have significant use. It’s because consultants in Nigeria are paid for doing nothing. That’s why a bloody intern and junior registrar can open his mouth to talk bullshit. I traveled to Germany and saw their health care, it was the consultants taking the lead, registrars basically looks and ask questions (apprentice). But here in Nigeria, consultants are no where to be found, so registrars start playing god and a bloody student intern opens he’s mouth to talk trash because of the corrupt and rotten system in the Nigeria health care in which consultants are paid to seat at home. Rubbish.
Registrar looks and only asks questions?!
An intern's work is to go for messages and bring spirit?
The confidence with which you are spewing rubbish is just jaw-dropping.
In Ghana, you are required to do about 10 Cesareans before you finish your 2 years of housemanship.
In South Africa--and I have seen English Doctors who worked there, speak so highly of them-- their Junior Doctors are some of the most experienced the world over. Their junior Registrars can do things some Counsultants in other countries are just learning.
In the UK, 1st year interns are already inserting chest and peritoneal drains.
Or is it the US where post graduate training can be completed in 3 years?
So you spend the first year of your training running errands?
How uninformed you are!
The Registrar is the soul of his department.
So if a Registrar only observes procedures, how and when is he going to perform those procedures. How is he going to become a Consultant?
Ever though about that?
20 something year olds are already performing difficult procedures in the West, but you are still stuck in the 19th century.
alyarmouk: Although Nigeria is among the less than 2% countries of the world that pays for medical housemanship....but then..it should have been a form of encouragement for these young scientists..knowing the hardship n workload they endure daily... It's a wrong turn.
Oga wetin you dey yarn?
Which 98% of the countries don't pay for housemanship?
Pierocash: his son is the highest ranking military officer, when a coup succeeds,it is the highest ranking officer that takes charge. He may,or may not be involve, but his taking over is the only option as far as coup is concerned.
Marcus Aurelious ,One of the Roman Emperor was killed by his own son and took over power.
WelcomeToBiafra: Come back to your Nigeria the zoo republic where fulani herdsmen terrorist government and its smelling terrorist agencies are stealing resources and people's boundaries.
OjukuwuHusband: Your father is a criminal, he's wanted for the rape of your mother...am your relative by the way.
You not being able to table your thoughts and arguments without cussing says a lot about you.
Can Igboho say in all truth that he has never been used for election violence? Can he swear he has never extorted anybody? Can he say he has never harassed or been used to harass innocent people?
His agitation for the Yorubas should not make me sentimental.
My brothers business got destroyed because of him (including the myriad of other frustrating Nigerian factors) and I know if many others are allowed to speak, more horrible stories will come out.
Nairaland Will not let some of the links to be posted. But there you have it and there's more
From Covid Vaccine you have moved to Vaccines in general.
For every 10 Doctors who are anti-vaxxers, there are thousands who say and think otherwise.
Conspiracy theories is the reason Polio is still ravaging Northern Nigeria in this age.
Vaccines don't work?!
So you believe its just because people are washing their hands that child and infant mortality rates have reduced the world over, although still higher in areas with worse healthcare.
What happened to smallpox, measles, chicken pox, Polio...?
Come on!
If you just target Covid, I understand, and it is reasonable to do so....
But vaccination in general?!
If you don't want to Vaccinate your Wards, don't do so, it's your choice.
HallaDaTruth: Have you heard of the coalition of doctors and other medical experts from the United States, Canada, UK etc that are against the virus ?. Even doctors are now warning people bro.
REMEMBER, MASKS WERE NOT COMPULSORY UNTIL THEY MADE IT MANDATORY
Coalition of who?
Tell me more about it.
Weren't masks worn in 1919, during the flu outbreak?
Racoon: One thought with the change in the service chiefs, Nigeria will heave a sigh of relief from the shameless lying trait of the military under the past predecessors but alas the shamefacedness is never going to abate.Even with all the evidence abounding about the ill fated plane?
The Alpha jet is just a mere toy that can be shot down by even an RPG unlike the M-16 fighter jet especially when it is flying @ low altitude. The NAF can continue to spin its conspiracy theory but as long as the pilots or black box of the down jet cant be ascertained, then all attempts to debunk BH propaganda is simply a propaganda by the NAF itself.
