Mr doctor, as an intern you have no business been called for emergencies especially at odd hours of the day. It is the work of registrars (resident doctors in the hospital). Blame the failed system mostly on the CMD and governing council of the hospitals in Nigeria. Everybody likes to do oga in Nigeria so the small registrars push the work to you the intern because an average Nigeria does not want to work but to collect salary.
Consultants shift their job to senior registrars.
Senior registrars shift their job to junior registrars
Junior registrars shift their job to interns (house officer)

Most we blame government for everything in this country? Blame the hospital management and your senior colleagues. Also blame the Nigerian ‘I am oga attitude’

I really don’t know if they use the term house officer but she’s doing her intern or whatever they call there and she’s not been paid. I would try to get more accurate details from here. Plus in 2009, my first cousins was doing his residency in USA as an emergency doctor, he told us they don’t pay resident doctors in USA but we didn’t believe and I’m not very sure but I will also ask my sister.

BTW: Google Average medical intern salary USA does not support your point, it undermined it.

$54,000.00 is a low pay for any worker in the US not to mention doctors. This is why there are campaigns to work them less, long hours and low pay.

But Nigerians immediately translate US salary to Nigeria. You cannot live a good life in US with 54,000.00.

Back to Nigeria. Obviously the returns on training doctors has diminished since most of them abscond. They prefer towns and cities like other professionals where they can make more money.

It is because of money that Nigerian doctors always compare themselves to US or U.K doctors, never to Scandinavian, Russian or Cuba doctors.

Nigeria had tried to solve some of the problems by training more Community Health Officers in the School of Health Technology because their training is locally specific and they cannot run overseas. But the opposition and discrimination against them is fierce.

The intern that she is doing, the correct word is internship, but that aside. I have a few questions.
(1)The "intern" that she is doing, is that before she got her M.D certificate or after she got the M.D certificate.
(2) If you really do have a sister doing "intern", Did she have her medical education started in the U.S.A?
(3) Is these "intern" thingy a compulsory requirement for her, for licensing purposes.

In the US , once you are awarded a medical degree, what is REQUIRED OF YOU IS TO WRITE USMLE STEP 2 CS AND APPLY FOR RESIDENCY VIA THE MATCHING SYSTEM. Observership or externships are duties done at the students discretion for THE PURPOSE OF PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING. not as a requirement. These M.D holders do not have a license, not even a temporary one during their first year of residency, YET THEY ARE PAID, based on the fact that they have written STEP ONE AND STEP 2 of the licensure exams, have a friggin M.D degree, and put in hours of work.


In the U.K after getting, M.B.B.S, as only medical degree holders they apply for Foundation Year. FY1 and start earning money, BASED THEIR DEGREE M.B.B.S and the hours of work they put in. IN FACT THEY ONLY GET LICENSED AFTER FY 1, AFTER EARNING ABOUT 24 K POUNDS, BASED ON WHAT...ONLY THIER M.B.B.S DEGREE

The European residency training system has a very poor structure, hence i cannot place it into the argument.

Indian doctors, graduate M.B.B.S write a licencure exam, get a TEMPORARY LICENCSE and start an equivalent of HOUSEJOB and are frigging paid.

South Africa has a two year internship and pays its interns!!!!

You should learn about the South African model.

They do youth service too, where you are flung to the ends of the country and might be the only Doctor for miles...

During your 2 years housemanship, you should have learnt enough to be able to perform spinal anaesthesia and cut someone open for surgery.

Family medicine training in Nigeria is quite extensive and they are trained to do surgeries-- you are a Generalist.

Many Private Hospital operators however don't do this training which makes their services substandard

The first woman trained was not even learned-- she was an illiterate trained by white missionaries and she trained thousands in her life Time.

Mozambique has Nurses performing Cesareans and they have halved their maternal mortality rates.


In Ghana, you won't be signed off as a house officer without 10 Cesareans.

In Medical School you are even supposed to take 10 vagunal deliveries or you won't get signed off.

Bottom line is training.

If you are trained to do something, why not?

About complications, it can happen to anybody at anytime.

I have seen old seasoned gynaes have complications, so what?

You are not a Docotor, not in the health sector and you obviously no nothing about it!

CS can be an emergency...there may be no time for any referral. Any doctor esp those working in rural areas should be able to perform CS....So long as they've been trained n competent to do it.

Family medicine training in nigeria is designed to fill in for the acute shortage of specialist doctors in nigeria.
They spend 1 yr of their training in a general hospital where they learn to perform most common surgeries encountered in general practice including CS.
They are expected to be competent in procedures like CS, hernia repair, appendectomy, excision of soft tissues etc b4 they are deemed certified.

Nobody is asking to copy advanced countries healthcare system because nigeria don't even have what it takes to do that.
Just treat people fair n just, including paying house officers. That's not too much to ask.
