Episode 18

It felt like I was dreaming. I continually tapped myself to be sure this was happening for real. I imagined for the rest of the day who this good samaritan could be. Was it Ranti? She wasn’t that nice. Was it Deji? He practically hated me now and of course isn't a lady. I was willing to ask everyone I knew and so I headed back to the office telling the nurse at the reception I was going to be back shortly.

“Hey Ranti. Was that you?”
“Me, what?”
“Did you pay the money for my mum’s kidney transplant surgery?”
“She looked at me and didn’t say anything.”
“Ranti, say something.”
“What do you think?” She asked smiling.”
“You are the only one I had the conversation with. So I'm wondering.”
“Yes it was me.”
“But I said I was no longer interested in the bet.”
“You tried. I see the way he looks at you. This is just me helping.”
“Go be with your mum.”
“Thanks Ranti but I’ll like to pay back.”
“How? She asked laughing.
“Never mind. Thank you again.” I said giving her a warm hug.
I continued to Deji’s office to ask him if he sent anyone. I had a strong feeling that it was him even with the current situation of things. If it was him, then I may just have another chance I smiled as I knocked on the door.
I walked right in after I heard him say “come in.”

“So I got to the hospital this morning to see my mum’s bill had been sorted. Was that you?”
“No,” he replied still looking into his desktop.
“But I was thinking you may have sent someone.”
“Are you joking Cleo?” He asked as he looked at me.
“You really think I’ll care that much after how you’ve treated me. I wasn’t joking when I said I wanted our relationship professional.”
“I thought you cared about me.” I said calmly as I walked towards him.
“I may have sent the wrong message but you can’t blame me. I have been really stressed lately." I said as I sat on his table.
“You never really answered my questions. I woke up naked in the same bed with you. What did you expect. I wanted to know if you had sex with me. All I needed was a yes or no.”
“What do you think?” He asked as he moved my hands away from his shoulders.
“I don’t know. Tell me.”
“Yes we had sex Cleo and it was memorable. It wasn’t just me. You had fun too. Are you happy now?”

“What did you just say?” I asked disappointed.
“Like I said I want our relationship to be professional from now on please. I thought you visited the clinic to test for STD’s and all . You should have found out already right?”
Now, that was a wake up call. I really never found the time to get myself checked.
“Okay then. I think I agree with you. We should be professional.” I said to his face as I dragged his mouse from beneath his palm and flinged it to the wall hoping it scattered.

Episode 17

“I made a promise to Cleo and I’m here to fulfill it as a man of my words. You both have made me really proud and to show my appreciation, I’ll be sponsoring your trip to a two -week training for leading ad agencies in New York where you both will be representing the company. In addition, Cleo you’ll be proceeding on a one week holiday following the training in a city of your choice anywhere in the world.I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. I was so happy, I jumped to hug the chairman and Deji who stood still while I was it.
“Thanks so much daddy but I’ll have to pass on this one. I’ve got a lot of work to do here.” Deji replied, smiling.
“Okay then. Whenever you are ready.” His father replied before turning to the audience encouraging them to enjoy the party.

Ranti had smiles all over her face as she looked at me and then Deji sipping her glass of wine slowly and seductively.
Did Deji just refuse this amazing offer because he had work to do or he just didn’t want to spend time with me. I was confused and it was written all over my face.
Deji stepped down the podium first, offering me his hand as a support while I descended from the podium.

“Hey Deji. Are you okay?” I asked rushing after him.
Cleo, my giving you a hand to step down the podium was me just being a gentleman. Nothing else. From now on, I’ll suggest we keep our relationship professional. I don’t do complicated as I have already had too much of it in my life. I’m not saying you are complicated though. It’s just what exists between us. Enjoy your trip he said as he smiled and walked away. I stood there watching him as he walked away. I had never been so confused in my life. I thought this same guy had feelings for me a while ago. What then is he saying? I felt like walking up to him to make things right. It was at that point I realised I didn’t want a professional relationship with him.

I picked up my bag and headed straight to the hospital. The office suddenly had become so uncomfortable. I met the nurses rolling my mum’s bed away from her room and I wondered if the worst had happened. I felt chills all over. “What’s happening?” I asked in tears as I ran towards the nurse. “Why didn’t you call me?” I asked the Nephrologist as I sat on the floor crying. “I just got an offer from the chairman in my office. I was going to ask him to give me the money instead of a holiday. I was going to pay.” I said crying uncontrollably.
“Your mother is going in for surgery. She isn’t dead Cleo.”
“For real?” I asked jumping up from the floor to take a closer look at my mum.
“I’ll be fine Cleo.” She said faintly squeezing my hands. I continued crying uncontrollably as the doctor held me close.”

“She will be fine Cleo. You made payments today and we got a donor today. It’s like a miracle. You should be grateful.”
“I paid?” I asked confused. “I didn’t.”
“Some lady came in saying you sent her to make payments. Not long after, another lady came in saying the same thing. We had to return her money since we already had enough.”
“I didn’t send anyone doctor.”
“Let’s just say, it’s a good samaritan. I’ll see you soon. Just relax here. I have to be in surgery now. We should be done before night.”

Episode 16

“Are you serious right now Cleo?” He asked as he tried to catch up with me. This is totally unnecessary. I thought we were having a good time a while ago he said expecting a reply from me.
“Hi, can you move the car please?” I asked the taxi driver who instead of taking orders from me began to smile at the both of us.
“Cleo! Say something please.”
“I didn’t hear you ask a question or am I missing something I asked with a straight face.”
“It’s okay. You can go. Have a good night.” He said calmly as he gave a signal to the taxi driver meaning he could proceed . The driver moved immediately and I wondered what was on his mind. I ordered a taxi and asked him to move the car but he refused and decided to take orders from the man instead. As far as I was concerned, that could pass for a clear case of gender inequality.

I had a meeting with the chairman that morning and another meeting with the nephrologist in charge of my mum’s case at 10am and so, I advised myself that lying in bed and worrying over the things I couldn't change wasn't going to help as I stood up and started to prepare.
Getting to the office, I met my colleagues in an unusually happy mood. I stared at the table displaying all kinds of food; from chinese to indian and Nigerian. I walked past trying to get an explanation from anyone. They were all partying with no one paying attention to me. What is happening? I kept asking everyone I bumped into until someone finally answered and said “Chairman is throwing a party for the big win we had yesterday. All thanks to you and Deji.”
I finally knew what it was about and soon joined in the party careful not to taste anything from a bottle that showed any alcohol percentage. I had learnt the hard way.

“Attention everyone!” The chairman called using the edge of his cutlery to gently tap the wine glass he drank from as he walked to the podium.
“We are having this celebration as a result of our big win yesterday. You know the details already. I wouldn’t want to bore you. Like you all know this was possible through the help of Cleo, the head of the copy department and Deji, my son who is now the CEO of this organisation. I couldn’t be more proud of both of them.” He said as he asked us to move up the podium to join him. Everyone was happy and cheering except for Ranti who had a straight face.

I got on the stage pretty excited. I couldn’t believe I was being celebrated. It had never happened before despite my continuous hard work for the company.

Episode 15

“I am so sorry. I can’t imagine what you are going through right now. I’ll like to speak with you concerning your mom.” The Medical Director said as he pulled me from where I stood.
Your mum needs this kidney transplant and she’s running out of time. What’s your plan?
“I don’t have any.” I replied as tears rolled down my eyes.

Just then my phone rang. It was Deji calling to ask for the password to my laptop. We were to meet the Chairman of Brooks Group for the presentation at 7pm just before he travels. He was going to be away for six months and that was the only shot we had if we needed the job quickly. I gave him the password immediately. I looked at my watch and saw it was 5:15pm already. I needed to leave as soon as possible. This deal was the next thing that could keep my mom alive.
“Doctor, I promise to be here first thing in the morning with a sound plan.” I said as I wiped my face.

“Okay. Take it easy though.” He smiled and watched me walk out of the department.
The traffic getting to the office was so bad, I had to park my car and take a motorcycle. When I finally go to the office, Deji was just getting into his car.
“Cleo you can come with me if you don’t mind.”
“Okay.” I said as I entered the car.
We didn’t say a word to each other until we got to Brooks company.
The receptionist, a tall dark-skinned lady ,neatly dressed, with a bright smile offered us seats in the waiting area and we sat.

“Hey Cleo, this is a bit awkward. I went through your emails not intentionally though and I found something.”
I looked at him and couldn’t understand how his cute face kept on doing the most annoying things.
“I read a mail from the Savers Hospital. How come you never mentioned the state of your mum’s health to me or my dad at least. You are family and you shouldn’t have to go through this alone.”
It felt good to know he cared though but I still wasn’t in the mood to speak so,I just continued to stare at him.
After many unsuccessful attempts to get me chatting, he gave up and asked “Can we at least wish ourselves good luck for this meeting?”
“Sure.” I smiled back as I placed my hands in his just before the receptionist asked us to go in.

While we took turns to present , the other watched and gave an encouraging smile. I wasn’t sure what was on his mind as he smiled at me while I spoke. As for me, I thought he was smart and handsome.
“Lancast you just got yourself the job. Congratulations!!!” The chairman said as he stood up and walked out shielded by his aides.
Yes! we shouted together as we unconsciously let go our pride and gave each other a lasting warm hug.

I woke up the next day wondering if my attitude towards Deji was necessary. Did I even have a reason to react the way I did? If he was being truthful when he said I was drunk and couldn’t give detailed descriptions to my place, then it most likely was my fault. The Margarita was so sweet, it felt like drinking a milkshake. I had no idea it had the power to put me in a situation like this. How I wish I could turn back the hands of time, I will definitely have replaced that glass of drink with Soda water or anything else that wouldn’t even have the power to increase my blood sugar let alone get me drunk.

After our presentation the previous day, on my way out of the chairman’s office, I booked a taxi before I even got to the reception. Deji who was optimistic about us having a proper conversation on our way after our victory was shocked to say the least as I walked into the taxi without saying a word.

Episode 14

I told them I was on my way and was going to sort it out even when I had no idea how I was going to make the payment. I sighed heavily, shook my head and started walking towards the car.
“Cleo is everything okay?” Deji asked as he rushed behind me. At that point, I felt like I had spoken too much for one day already and so I decided to be silent. I had more serious issues to attend to and so I entered the car and drove off without looking back or saying a word.

I got to the hospital to meet my mom in a very critical state and when I asked Dr Zamani, the Nephrologist, he told me her condition had worsened and it was beginning to affect her heart. Pleading for more time was definitely not an option. The Medical Director who happened to be my mum’s doctor had been so nice to us, it felt really insensitive asking for more time. The bet I hoped to win in order to take care of this issue was lost already. As if that was enough, I ended up being in a huge mess as well.
I remembered I needed a check up and looked around to see if I could find a nurse to ask questions. At least, that, I could afford.

Right there in the walkway, I saw a nurse pass and quickly ran to catch up with her.
“Ma I sort of had unprotected sex. No, that came out wrong. I’m actually not sure. I may have had unprotected sex. What do I do?”
“Wetin dey worry this one? So you nor know when man sleep with you? Abeg commot make I see road. I get work (What is the matter with you? Don't you know when you have sexual intercourse with a man. Can you excuse me. I am busy.)" She said in pidgin english, as she hissed and walked away.
It was awkward but that was the truth. I wasn’t sure. Still trying to figure out what had just happened, I sighted another nurse walk by.
“Excuse me ma, I’m sort of not sure if I had unprotected sex or not. I’ll like a check up please.” With the little tray she held full of bandages and scissors, she stopped to look at me for a few seconds and pointed towards the nursing station. “Can you go there please? I am rushing to the theatre. She said as she hurriedly walked away. When I looked towards the nursing station, I found the nurse I had spoken to earlier looking at me with a straight face and her hands folded.

“Okay, now this is annoying.” I’m not sure if I had sex. What’s the big deal? You should help me figure it out. Isn’t that what you are supposed to do?” I said to myself looking back at her wishing she could hear me as I turned around and walked towards the waiting area where I began to stare into the wall in front of me.

Episode 13

I was only a few steps away from the exit door when I met the chairman walking in.
“It’s a good thing I met you both here. I bet you two were discussing the project. There’s been a change of plan. Can we meet in my office?”
Yes of course, I replied smiling and encouraging Deji to do the same.. I couldn’t afford to have him suspect we were doing otherwise.

“I got a call this morning from the organisation’s executive secretary. She said another ad agency came up with a similar proposal. The chairman looked at it and suggested that we both compete for it by delivering a compelling presentation. This is not to scare you but to let you know, I strongly believe in the both of you. I know you will bring this home.” He said confidently.
“You both can start working on it immediately.” He said patting our shoulders.

“I really need to be somewhere right now sir. There’s something very important I ought to have attended to earlier but i've been busy with this project. I informed Deji already. I’ll be back shortly.” I replied taking a second to look at him. He looked away not saying a word. He seemed upset but I couldn’t be bothered.
“Okay take your time. I’ll see you both before the end of the day.” The chairman said as he opened the door for me and I walked out .

I went straight to Ranti’s desk and said the words I never thought I would. “This is the point where I say I'm done with this bet. I’m no longer interested. I appreciate the offer, your thoughtfulness but this it. Thanks.” I said walking right out of the door not waiting to see her gloat at the new situation of things.

“Cleo, In all honesty, you were drunk and couldn’t give me a proper description to your house. That was the reason I took you home. The last thing I’ll do is take advantage of a lady.” Deji said trying to catch his breath after running to catch up with me.
“And what happened next?” I asked as I turned around.
“What do you mean what happened next?”
“I mean...”
I got interrupted as my phone rang. It was the hospital my mum was admitted in. My mum’s health was deteriorating and they needed the balance for my mum’s surgery.
Continues tomorrow in the next episode.

The full book is now available. More information on how to get it will be in my next post. Be on the look out grin

Episode 12

“This is the project your dad asked that we work on together. I managed to put some ideas together. I will appreciate if you could go through and send in your feedback.” I said dropping the file on the table smiling and walking away gracefully.

“Cleo” I heard him call after I closed the door. I was never going to answer that. He could continue having fun with all the ladies at the company for all I care.I had made up my mind, I was going to act like nothing ever happened and that was what I was going to do. I wasn't sure if I felt sad or defeated but I was sure of one thing. I was comforted with the thought of my reward from the chairman having come up with brilliant ideas for the project. That could just make up for the bet I had just lost.

I walked straight to my workstation as quickly as my legs could take me. I felt as though something terrible had just happened. I wasn’t sure if I felt so terrible because I had obviously lost the bet which I hoped would give me the money for my mum’s surgery or because I felt cheated on; but ,I consoled myself asking the right question any sane person would ask; “were we even in a relationship?” There I was with no answer to this question and yet expecting exclusivity with a man who couldn’t be decent enough to give me a call after we spent a night together. I smiled to myself as I began to clear my desk. “So what exactly are we doing?” I asked myself again.

“Cleo c’mon you heard me call you and yet you walked out. Trust me, it’s certainly not what it looked like. Don’t pretend you didn’t notice she was the one all over me. She means absolutely nothing Cleo.” He voiced quietly looking around to be sure no one was listening and expecting a response.

I looked at him for a few seconds after I threw the last item in my laptop bag, thinking of the huge mess I got myself into. It was more than 24 hours after we last saw and I hadn’t had the time to get a morning after pill at the pharmacy or even visit the clinic for a check up.
I picked up my laptop bag and handbag and was walking out when he hurriedly walked to stand in front of me not minding anyone. It was too early to give him the impression that I was going to be the girl he could always get back after an apology.

“Cleo say something please”
“You really want me to say something?”
“Yes I do.” He said calmly reaching for my hand
“Okay then. Should I be bothered about any sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and the likes because I’m yet to visit the clinic?”
Immediately, he let go of my hand, stepped backwards and asked in disappointment, “Excuse me, what did you just say Cleo?”
Exactly what you just heard, I replied as I walked out.

Episode 11

“I am indeed very happy sir.”I said with a pretentious smile. I’ll be on this right away. Í promise we will do our best possible to make this happen.
“Nice, Thank you. I trust you both. Once you are done drafting a copy, you can take it to Deji so you both can look through.”
“I really appreciate your confidence in me sir and we won't let you down.”
‘“That’s good to know.” He said smiling as I stood up to leave.

“Cleo” he called as soon as I got to the door.
“I forgot to add. Get me a mindblowing campaign in 48 hours and you will get a big surprise from me. It’s something you have always wished for. Trust me.”

“Okay sounds nice. I’ll try my best sir.”
“Mhmm” he said as he stood up and moved towards the rooftop.
“Something I have always wanted” I repeated to myself as I walked out. I could not remember having a conversation of a wish I had with him at all. It sounded good and I just couldn’t wait to see what he had.
I spent the remaining part of the day working on the project assigned to me by the chairman. It was going very well. I had all the resources I needed and just before the close of day, I was confident my plan was going to get us the job. I only needed some more time to finish up. I may have lost the drive if I decided to go home and so, I stayed back until the next day.
By morning I was done and couldn't wait to have Deji go through all I had put together. I knew the last time we spent together ended in a disaster after I woke up in his bed but I guess this project meant more than any of that. I was going to act like nothing happened. It wasn’t going to be easy but I was going to try. It was my best shot.

It was 9:30 am already. Thankfully, I was able to catch a little sleep for about two hours. I stood up to wash my face in the restroom in a bid to freshen up. I got back to my workspace and picked up the project file heading straight to Deji’s office. A few steps from the door, I started to develop cold feet. The scene from our last meeting flashed through my mind. How was I supposed to act like nothing happened?

After a few minutes of standing and looking into the clear space, I summoned courage, moved straight to the door and pushed it open.
“Hey Cleo, how's it going?” He asked as he pushed Ranti who about kissing him away.
“Can you give us a minute please?” He asked her taking a few steps away from her.
“Absolutely.” She said smiling at me. She didn’t need to say anything. I got the message quite clear. I had lost, she won and that meant no money.

IS THIS THE END OF THE GAME FOR CLEO? WHAT DO YOU THINK? cheesy

Episode 10

To the left and right were two couples. Behind me was a woman about my mother’s age. I could feel her eyes on my body. In front of me was a girl who looked really sick. She had come to purchase Malaria drugs. In a short while, I heard the pharmacist call. “Madam, it’s your turn.” “Me” I asked trying to act oblivious.
“You know what, attend to them. I am not in a hurry." I said pointing to the couple.

The first couple requested a pregnancy test kit and the other ordered prenatal vitamins. As I watched them, my reason for being there began to feel very wrong. I wasn’t sure I could order the pill. While I was still smiling pretending my reason for letting them go ahead of me was me simply being courteous, I got a call from the office that the chairman had been waiting to see me for close to two hours. What a perfect time! I got out of the pharmacy quickly, and drove straight to the office.

I got to the office in a rush and very disorganised to say the least.
“Hi Cleo, where have you been? The chairman has been waiting.” They all said taking turns. Getting to answer the question would have been wasting extra time I couldn’t afford at the time. I dropped my laptop quickly and was rushing to the chairman’s office when I met him in the hallway.

“Hi Cleo. Good Morning. I had been waiting for you all day. Where have you been?”
“Ërmmm…”
“You look good. I think my daughter has the same dress you have on. I bought it for her on my last trip to the US.” I was short of words. I had no idea what to say next.

“I am so sorry sir. I was trying to …”
“Oh it's okay. I know you never come in late. Are you sure everything is okay?”
Flattered by his response, I was quiet for a while after which I replied, “everything is fine sir.”
“Are you sure?” He asked again. “You could go home if you want. Our meeting can wait till tomorrow.”
“It’s okay sir. I'll be fine.”
“Okay if you say so. So, we just signed this new client . It is a big one.” He smiled as he handed me the file.
“They happened to see some of the online ad campaigns we ran earlier and they were really impressed. Thanks to you.” He said as he gave me a pat on the shoulder.

“If you and my son can continue to do what you both know how to do best, we will be on a retainer for the next five years smiling to the bank every other day. Not just a retainer, a retainer worth hundreds of millions.” He whispered and laughed afterwards expecting me to join him.
When I didn't smile or laugh he asked again, “did you hear me?”
“Yes I did sir. I was just…”
“So, why do you not look happy?”

If only he knew what his son and I had been up to, he would have chosen a better phrase to express his confidence in the both of us. Indeed we both knew how to do what we do know how to do best.
