Episode 30

“I was here to pick you. Come on! Why are you looking at me like that?”
“How?” I asked stopping him from moving forward and looking into his eyes.
“I mean in this same way you're looking at me right now. I was here to pick you okay. Surprise you. That sort of thing.”
“Okay then,” I am not going to argue. I'm happy you came.”
“Good. You are welcome.” He teased as he dropped the luggage in his car boot and opened the door of the car for me to step in.
“So why didn't you go for your holiday trip? You changed your mind?”
“Yes I did.” I replied quite confidently
“Do you want to tell me why?” He asked turning to take a look at me.
I miss home Deji. I miss my mother. I spoke to her a few times but I just want to see her.
“You could have called me to check up on her.” He said smiling
“No that wouldn't have been necessary.” I replied immediately. I was flattered though.
“Why? Are you scared I'll tell her the truth of the relationship between us.
“Did you say relationship? Is there even a relationship here?” I asked pretending I had no idea what he was talking about.
“What do you think?” He asked almost in a whisper. I was lost for words. I didn't say a word after. I just smiled and looked out of the window as we drove to the office.

“Hey. Cleo is back.”Segun screamed from his workstation as soon as I entered the office.
“Welcome back.” Everyone chorused as they stood up and rushed to give me a hug one after the other. It was while we were at it, I realised how much I had missed every one of them including Ranti who didn't make an attempt to welcome me back.
“How was your trip? What was the New York experience like? Did you make new friends? These were the questions everyone was asking at the same time.
Deji stood a few feets away smiling and watching all of the drama. While everyone was around me, I still found ways to make eye contact with him and also to take a look at Ranti at the same time. More like monitoring them both. She stared at him while he focused all of his attention on me except for once when he turned to look at her asking why she was still sitting and that made me kind of happy. I was back for real and whatever happened between them while I was away, I didn't care. I had seen life differently in the past two weeks and I was coming back not to be the nerdy Cleo but the intelligent and confident one who knows what she wants and how to get it. It was revolutionary for me and inspired by Sandra, my South African friend. Maybe I had joined the feminist movement, I wasn't too sure but it wouldn't be bad eitherways. I was going to make everyone feel my worth from that time on and so I raised my voice above everyone else and said “I'll tell you all about New York; what I learnt, my experience but you will have to sit in your workstations first.”

“Okay,” they all chorused. Before I knew it, I was sharing my experience;and all I had learnt but most importantly, how we were going to use all of it including the connections I made as a team to put Lancast Media on the global map. They were all quite impressed. In about one hour, we had come up with a solid strategy. They all gave me standing ovation afterwards as I watched the chairman, Deji and Dara do same at the entrance where they stood.

Episode 29

Diana came in at exactly 6pm like she said. She had me looking as pretty as a doll. The last time I had the same feeling was on my first date with Deji, courtesy of Ladi. I could remember how excited I was to finally go on a date with Deji Castle.
I admired myself one last time in the mirror and thanked Diana for her time and expertise as she left. I picked up my purse, slipped my foot into my shoes as I headed to the door.
I didn't want to go alone but I didn’t have a date either. I summoned courage as I looked at the reflection of my very beautiful dress in the mirror and I wondered what reason I had not to show off. I was alone at the party literally. However, I had the company of Sandra occasionally amidst her intense networking. I thought it was time to also brush up my networking skills as I watched her closely and applied the same approach. The same night I added close to 15 new contacts for business. Maybe I needed to be alone after all. What a day!

The last two weeks happened to be the most interesting two weeks of my life. Apart from the fact that it was my first trip outside Nigeria, meeting Rico, the drama with Deji and Rico turned out to be eye-opening. A few months ago, I would never have imagined all of that would ever happen, not to talk about having me at the center of it. I left for Nigeria in the evening of the next day after the party, deciding to postpone the one week holiday trip. Two weeks seemed like a very long time to be away from home, especially leaving my mum to the care of a nurse whom I barely knew.

I was at the arrival terminal by 1pm on this very sunny day. As soon as I stepped out, I could feel the hassle and bussle of Lagos immediately. Taxi drivers stationed at strategic locations all wanting to get your attention at the same time. The noise from cars honking continuously with a very long line of traffic that had already built miles away. The scenario brought back memories and I realised I was out of my bubble already. Holiday was over and it was time to get back in the game. I took a quick look at my phone hoping it was done after I replaced my sim card. As soon as it came on, I tried calling the company driver but the network was really terrible. Not long after as I stood there in the sun thinking if I should go back into the airport to have a seat, my phone rang. It was the driver. “Madam abeg no vex. I carry Ranti and Ogar go one meeting for Victoria Island. If you fit wait small. I go reach there in two hours.”
I asked him not to bother because I was too tired to wait for another two hours. Besides, the oga was Deji. It would be too awkward for all of us and I didn’t need any of that. I thought my best option was to get a cab and so I started heading out of the waiting area. I was just about to beckon on a taxi driver when I saw Deji looking around while making a phone call.

“Are you crazy or something? You said you were going to be here. Are you even saying the truth?” I heard him say before tapping his shoulders from behind to say “I am here, Deji. Take it easy. Is that Mr Sunday, the driver you were speaking with? He said he had to take Ranti and ogar for a meeting. I really thought the ogar was you.”
“Oh yeah.” He answered trying to shove away his phone quickly.
I was a bit confused as a result of his sudden uneasiness and so I asked “weren't you expecting me or are you here to pick someone else?”
“Of course not.” He replied, holding my hands before quickly reaching for my bags and suitcase. “Can I help you with this please?”
“Of course.” I replied, still trying to understand why he was acting so weird.

Episode 28

Cleo are you okay?” Rico asked, scared that I may ave burnt my skin. The truth was I didn't feel a thing. It felt like I couldn't feel my body anymore. I was confused to say the least. I never imagined I would ever be in such a situation. I watched him as he rushed to get one of towels hanging in the bathroom.

"Cleo, you shouldn't feel this way. Do you want to have a change of cloth? Twice in one day I'll have a guy want to take off my clothes. It definitely wasn't happening. I thought.
"I could go out if you want." He said as he stood up to leave.
"No it’s fine." I replied as I held his hands preventing him from leaving.
"You really need to change your clothes. I could look away. " He smiled. "You can trust me."
I agreed, asking to go into the bathroom while I changed my top. When I looked in his eyes, I knew I could trust him. I quickly changed my top after which I opened the door for him to come out.
"Now you know you can trust me." He said as he sat beside me and held my hands.
"What exactly do you want from me Rico? You have been really nice. I mean with the clothes, hair, makeup. Tell me.” I said turning in his direction.

"Cleo. I just want you to be happy. I just want to be your friend. I'll be living in a fantasy land if I thought you will want to be with me. I know I'm not the kind of guy you would want. I'm not Nigerian. I'm in my late 40's, pretty old for you judging from seeing Deji of course." He laughed expecting me to join him. "Okay. I'm sorry but what I mean is I know you don't like me as much as I do but it's okay. I'll be happy to be your friend. You've got talent that will keep me attracted so you don't have to worry. However, I could still take you to the sexual health clinic if you want. I know you like him. I've seen that from the way you looked at him. I also know you need to be safe. So it's up to you." He said raising his eyebrows expecting a response.

"I see you don't have an answer for me." He said as he looked around to pick up his phone which was ringing. After he hung up, he looked at me and said "Diana will be here soon. I should leave. I can't wait to see at the dinner party. See you later." He said as he pecked me on the cheek and took his leave. I slipped into the sheets thinking of the present situation I was in. I just realised I liked Rico too. He thought he was too old for me but I never thought of it that way. He looked like he was in his mid-thirties. I had no idea he was actually in his late 40s. I was only 28 years old. I definitely had to agree with him on that but how come he gave up on me so easily. He seemed a bit easier to understand than Deji. He was cute and quite calm. If there was anything to discourage me, it would be the fact that he isn't Nigerian before the age difference.

Episode 27

"You are different Cleo. I thought I could stay a few weeks without you but I couldn't and that's why I am here. I'm here to apologise and tell you how I feel about you. I want you to be mine." He said as he moved closer slipped my hair which was covering half of my face to the back of my ear. I felt a strange movement through my body. My feet and palms became cold. "Did you say you want me to be yours?” I whispered as he wrapped his hands around my waist, turned me around and dropped me gently on the bed.
"Yes I do and I mean it." He whispered back as he bent over me guarding me with both knees as he placed his lips on my forehead slowly pecking my forehead, down to my nose and was almost on my lips when we became distracted by a knock on the door.

"Deji you have to go." I said shivering. It was too much for me to take in. I felt like my head was going to explode.
"Why?" He asked taking off his shirt. "That should be housekeeping. They will come back later." He said as he kissed me on the lips and tried to take off my top.
"I’m serious Deji. It's not housekeeping." I said as I pushed him away and stood up to watch him leave.
"Then who is it?" He asked as he wore back his polo shirt and paused to get an answer.
"I'll explain later." I replied looking away.
"Oh." He said nodding slowly as he stood up to look me in the eye. "I'm sorry. I'll just leave. Have fun." He said as he shook his head, walked to the door and opened it.

"Hey. I hope you've got a really nice cup of coffee." Rico said in excitement without taking a minute off pressing his phone to see who had opened the door.
While I was still thinking of how best to salvage the situation, Deji moved a few steps forward requested a handshake from Rico and said firmly with a smile, "Deji Castle, Lancast Media, Lagos. I work in the same company with Cleo. She's told me so much about you. I'm glad to finally meet you." “Thank you. Did you get to see her in those dresses I sent because she wouldn't let me?" He asked with a smile.
"Not at all. If she wouldn't let you, why would she let me?" He laughed. "I'll see you around." He said smiling at us before walking away.
"I'll take it that you want to surprise me this evening. I'll try not to pass out." He said with a charming smile as he took a seat. "So where's the coffee?" He asked looking around.

I rushed quickly to the table beside the bed to plug the electric kettle while I tried to sort out the different brands of coffee on the tea tray. I turned to look at Rico from time to time while I made the coffee to see what he was up to. I didn't want to believe for a second he didn't suspect anything between me and Deji. He was keenly reading an article on his tablet. I thought it would be stupid to bring up the matter and so I decided to just make the coffee. How many stupid things could I possibly do in just one day. As I made the coffee, I reminisced the scene with Deji. How did we go from having regular conversations to being all cozy and the way he touched me. I had never experienced anything like that. I acted otherwise but it felt so good.

"Wait a minute Cleo. Was that Deji we spoke about? Cleo? Rico called again after I went silent for a few seconds. I had just finished making the coffee and as soon as he asked the question, my heart skipped several beats and in an attempt to consciously coordinate myself for what was ahead, the cup slipped from my hands and the coffee spilled all over my body.

Episode 26

“Did you say I have to make a choice from all of these?” I asked as I ran my fingers through all ten dresses walking from one end of the rack to the other. I was still in awe when I realized I hadn’t asked the beautiful lady who sent the dresses and so I did.
“Mr Rico placed the order, Miss Cleo. He asked that you make a choice. However you could take all of it if you so desire.” She said as she smiled and pointed to the door to my room.
“Oh sorry.” I apologised as I opened the room. I was still in shock. I had never seen anything anything like that. I guess she wouldn’t blame my reactions instead she would blame it on the surprise.

While I tried on the dresses one after the other , I walked around the room, imagining my alluring look for the night. While at it, I got a call from Rico asking if he could swing by to help me pick the best dress.
“You could drop by for a cup of coffee if you want. You are definitely not seeing me in this dress. Coffee date in my room in 30 minutes.” I said giggling as I dropped the phone and looked into the mirror one last time.
“This is the dress Diana. Thank you.” I said confidently as I moved both hands below my breasts which were now properly aligned even without having a brassiere on. I moved my hands further down to my abdomen which had never appeared so slim in a dress. My hips exposed the hour glass figure I never paid attention to. I just couldn’t wait to show off the new me at the dinner party.

I’ll be here at 6pm to take care of your hair and makeup.” Diana said as she arranged the remaining dresses on the rack.
“Thank you. I had no idea that was included in the package as well. ” I replied with a smile as I took off the dress, put it back in the hanger and placed it carefully in the wardrobe.

As I stood there with my hands on the handles of the wardrobe admiring the dress and asking myself why Rico would want to do this, I heard a knock on the door. “Rico is here. Please open the door.” I asked Diana politely. Perhaps it was time to ask him the question.
“Cleo, I could go back if you are busy.” Deji said with surprise written all over his face as he looked at me, Diana and the dresses on the rack really closely.
“I’ll be back at 6pm ma’am.” Diana said with a smile as she moved the rack out of the room.
“What is all this you are doing Cleo? Deji asked as he banged the door behind Diana.

“Is this how you choose to spend the company’s money. C’mon you were given the liberty to get whatever you want but not to abuse it like this. I’ve never known you to be vain. What's happening?” He asked calmly as he held my hands and walked me to sit on the bed as he sat beside me.

“Why are you here Deji?” I asked with a straight face like all he had just said meant nothing.
“To apologise to you. The night you spoke with Ranti was one of those nights when I worked late and decided to stay in the office guest house. I have no idea how she got in there or had access to my phone. I truly don't understand what happened. You have to believe me.”
“The same way you had me over at your place and almost made me believe nothing happened between. Nice story. Please leave Deji I requested as I stood up from the bed and rested on the reading table.”
“Nothing happened Cleo.” Deji said laughing really hard. At that point, I became really confused and angry at the same time. Did he think I was so stupid or what. He told me without a doubt he had sex with me and now he didn’t. “Please get out of my room Deji.” I shouted.

"I didn’t do it. When you accused me of sleeping with you. I thought you were up to something. I mean which girl wouldn’t know if a guy had sex with her. I agreed to your claims just to see what plans you had, maybe to frame me up. It’s not strange in the Castle family. It happens all the time with girls who want money. We are used to it.” He laughed again. I couldn’t believe how much of a fool I had made of myself.

Episode 25

"Sandra what was that about? I hope that didn't have anything to do with me or the dress I need to get. I hardly know this guy."
"Relax Cleo. Not exactly. I just mentioned that we needed to get you a dress and weren't familiar with the city and so we will use his help."
"Okay and then what happened next?” I asked curiously.
"And he said he would be happy to help." She laughed as she touched my chin. I wasn't sure how to feel about all she had just said. I was very much aware of the notion of these men had about Nigerian women. A perceived sole dependence on men for every single need. I didn't want to further confirm it, especially not with Rico.

“You may not need to go to any shop after all... Oh there he is.” She exclaimed as she picked up her folder and hurriedly ran after a well dressed Italian man she had carefully looked for since the beginning of the event. I wasn't going to be surprised if he was the reason she attended the conference in the first place judging by her admirable level of ambition. “What do you mean I may not need to go to the shop after all?” I asked as I tried to pick up the remaining of my coffee in an attempt to rush behind her.
“Hey I see you made friends already. Isn’t it too soon. I almost thought I was the only one who had the privilege.” Another familiar voice spoke behind me with a hand on my shoulder.
I stood still for a few seconds watching Sandra catch up with the guy she was running after as she started a conversation. I really hoped she was with me at the time because if it was who I thought it was, I wasn't sure what to say or do next.
“Wouldn’t you even turn to say hi. Did I hurt you that much? This person asked as he turned around to stand in front of me.”
I wasn’t mistaken. It was him.

“Deji I see you made it to the conference. Nice!” I said as I took his hand off my shoulders and began to walk towards Sandra quickly.
“Will you stop this awkward attitude of yours. I came all the way to surprise you. You really think I’ll be attending the conference barely 24 hours to the end seriously. You didn’t even bother to give me a call in two weeks or even a message. Can you at least be nice?”
“Deji Castle did you just say awkward attitude?” I asked as I burst out laughing. I couldn't believe Deji would think anyone else could have an awkward attitude. As far as I was concerned, he had the most awkward attitude.
“Deji. I don't care. You could cross seven seas for all I care. Of course you turned down the opportunity for the conference because you had to stay back with Ranti to make a Castle baby. Congratulations daddy to be. I’m happy for you!” I said as I turned around and continued walking.

“Castle baby? What’s that?” He asked looking really surprised at what I had just said. I interpreted the look on his face as “how did she get to know about it?” and not “what is she talking about?” His look communicated both but I chose to believe the former. I wasn’t dreaming. So, if he was thinking of lying about what had happened between them, he had to try very hard.
I looked around for Sandra but couldn’t find her anymore. I had missed her while I had a chat with Deji. I figured it was time to go back to my room.
“Deji I really don’t know what you are here for but I’m definitely not buying your story. If you would excuse me.” I said as I walked into the lift and watched as he paced up and down the hallway trying to make a phone call. He probably was trying to get through to Ranti so they could get their stories straight I thought.

“Hello Miss Cleo.” I heard a lady say from the front of my room as she waved while I walked towards her. She had a proper American accent, neatly dressed with her hair packed in a shiny ponytail. She also had a very cute smile that exposed her perfect set of white teeth.
“I am Diana Lincht. I’ve brought this beautiful dresses for you to make a choice, Miss Cleo.” She said as she pointed towards the rack behind her. “Beautiful!” I replied as my eyes shone brighter just like the glitters from the collection.

Episode 24

The two weeks of the conference had gone pretty well surpassing my expectations, the closing date was only one day away. I wished it didn't come to an end so quickly. I had gotten myself quite a good number of potential partners and clients and that made me understand why certain big companies would usually stop at nothing to get a seat at the table in conferences like this. It was definitely worth every penny. It made the phrase, "Your network is your net worth" so valid.
As I sat at the coffee place, going through every complimentary card with a broad smile, I felt a presence behind me. The cologne was so familiar, I was sure it was someone I knew but still I decided to act oblivious and just wait until he said a word.
"Hey, how long do you plan on going over those. I got you a nice mix. Coffee like you've never had it. You wanna try?" He asked as he gave me the cup.
It was Rico Shunt.

"Hi Rico. I never thought I'd see you again." I replied as I took the cup of coffee from him.
"I was hopeful the universe would bring us together again. I apologise for the last time. I was only being a concerned friend. I shouldn't have. I apologise." He said looking above my head.
"It's okay. I get it." I replied with a smile tilting his face gently towards mine.
"Thank you." He said with a broad smile.
"Have you been attending the conference?"
"Yea sure. I listened to your lecture on Communication and Media Psychology. Really good Stuff Cleo. You ever need a new job, make sure you give me a call.”
"That's really thoughtful. Thank you but how. I don't have your contact information.”
"Okay. Here it is." He said as he wrote a Nigerian phone number on my cup.
"Is this yours?"
"Yes. I am in Nigeria once every three months. You could get lucky." He said as he smiled and walked away. I would be lucky indeed.

It was a tradition to close the conference with a dinner party. It seemed everyone but me came prepared. I didn't have a dinner dress and I wasn't sure I could afford to buy one from the city.
"Hi Cleo. You ready for tomorrow night?" Sandra asked as she drew out a chair to sit beside me. I met Sandra on the fifth day of the conference right after my presentation. She came in from South Africa sponsored by her organisation too. She was a lady in her mid-thirties, very beautiful, most people would always turn to have a second look at her. When she walked up to me and congratulated me after my session, I was honored. I couldn't believe a lady that beautiful would recognise me in such a big conference and since then, we became good friends.
"I don't think I'll be attending Sandra. I don't have a dress." I replied.
"Why?" She asked pretty concerned at my …..
"Okay. I’ll get you a dress in a second."
"And how do you plan on doing that?" I asked
"Who's the cute guy you were speaking with before I walked in?" She asked with a mischievous smile.
"That's Rico. We were on the same flight. He is just a friend." I stressed after seeing the look on her face.
"Okay. Cool then." She replied as she looked around, picked up her cup of coffee and stepped out.

Sandra was many things including a very confident woman. One time we had discussions about the power that comes with being a hardworking intelligent black woman, she made me see things differently. She knew what she wanted and always found a way to get it. After that conversation, I could understand why she was the only black female director on her company's board. I watched her pace up and down the conference hall until she found Rico and stopped to have a conversation. From where I sat, I looked at the both of them, watching every move and trying really hard to understand what the conversation was about. I really hoped it didn’t have anything to do with me or the fact that I didn't have a dress for the party.

Episode 23

I wasn't sure of the name of the hotel and so I asked him to hold on for a few seconds while I checked my email.
“It’s the New York Marriott Downtown Hotel.”
“Great. Exactly the same place I’m headed.”
“Oh yes it definitely is.” I whispered with a smile as we walked through the exit to get a cab.
Rico was a very interesting guy who had an idea of almost everything there was. Just a few hours together, we had talked about almost everything. He was really chatty, I didn’t realise when I told him everything about Deji and I including the bet that never saw the light of day.
“So, why don’t you just get a contraceptive. It’ll help ease the worries and fears of having Deji’s baby.” He teased.
“I have never given opting for a contraceptive method a thought honestly.”
“Ain’t you Nnigerians risk takers?” He teased again. C'mon it's really not a big deal. I could take you to one of the sexual health clinics to talk to a health professional if you don't mind.
“Oh No.” I replied in a rather harsh tone. How did I ever get to discussing sex education with a total stranger my first day in New York. It definitely didn’t sound right. I held my bag firmly for comfort and looked out of the window the remaining part of the journey.

We said our goodbyes at the reception after we got the keys to our respective rooms. I almost thought there was a spark between us before the sex education lecture came up. I watched him smile again as he said, “maybe the universe may just bring us together, some other time. Take care.”He walked away without asking for my contact details or room number at least. The shenanigans with the cute american guy I just met was definitely over I thought as I watched him go into the elevator without looking back.

I got to my room a few minutes later and just as I opened the door, my mouth did same. The view was amazing. I could see the Hudson River from my study table and a part of the city as it lit up. It looked so beautiful as night time was setting in and I was in awe. At that point, I could definitely say Rico was wiped out from my memory for the next minute.
I really wanted to share all of the beautiful scenery with someone. I called Ladi but there wasn’t any response. I wasn't surprised because it was past midnight in Nigeria. I decided to put a call through to Deji. I could bet he was going to act as mean Deji this time but I was prepared. To make the conversation less awkward, I was going to quickly say, "Hi Deji. I just checked into the hotel. I thought I should let you know." Then if that goes well, I'll just ask, "Do you mind seeing the view? It’s very beautiful." Right in the middle of my practice, the call got picked.

"Hi Cleo. You must be having a great time. We are doing good here. She said as she pointed the phone camera on Deji who was fast asleep with the duvet covering just his pelvic area."
I couldn't believe what was happening. "What are you doing there Ranti? I asked in surprise.
"Making a Castle baby." She laughed.
"A baby?" I shouted
"You should be happy for me Cleo. I'm 30 years old already. Except you plan on hooking me up with your brother which you clearly don't have then I think Congratulations from you will be in order.”
"What! I can't believe you." I voiced out loudly before hanging up and slipping into the sheets to digest all that just happened.
I had just a few hours before the start of the conference. The right thing to do was go to sleep but the zeal to completely forget what had just happened and to make my organisation proud at the same time just wouldn’t let me. I stayed up all night studying for the next day before finally catching about three hours of sleep

Episode 22

"Okay. Thank you. " I replied, trying to hide my disappointment as I walked away.
"Hold on." I turned around with a big smile expecting to hear him agree to my suspicion.
"You should change your skirts. I think your period is here. You are not pregnant afterall." He laughed. Having a baby with you would have been nice. What do you think?" He asked as he laughed again. I couldn’t help but imagine how difficult it was to understand Deji. I was going to stop him and ask if he had ever been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as he walked away but I had to be in New York on time. My period starting that day meant I was ovulating about two weeks prior, which happened to be around the same time I slept over at Deji’s. I was indeed one of the luckiest girls on the planet? I couldn’t imagine what would have become of me, If I missed my period.

New York is such a beautiful city, I thought as I looked around while waiting for my luggage at the baggage reclaim area. Even if I hadn't had the slightest glimpse of the city, I was compelled to think so with an aura so warm. I watched the baggage carousel bring in luggage every second with my tired eyes anxiously expecting to see my luggage. It was the longest flight I had ever being on- about 11 hours and 15 minutes and to make matters worse, my period started the same day. There I was with my legs pressing tightly against each other. I felt sticky already. I really hoped a stranger wouldn’t walk up to me just to call my attention to a stain on my jeans the second time. That would be such a bad memory to associate with such a beautiful city.

“Hi, are you okay?” A good looking man with short curly hair, wearing a nice pair of glasses that exposed his shiny bright eyes asked from behind me “You look like you want to use the restroom. What does your suitcase look like? I can help while you go sort yourself out. It’s not a pretty sight.”
“What’s not a pretty sight?” I asked scared that what I feared may have just happened.
“Your legs. The way you press them tightly against each other and that funny movement.” He laughed. “My name is Rico Shunt. You can handover your baggage tag. I’ll help you. Trust me.” He smiled.
I thanked him as I handed over my tag pointing to my suitcase as it was approaching and then quickly walked to the restroom. While I got myself cleaned up, I reminisced about what had just happened with Rico. I had just met with a good looking American guy and a very nice one at that.

As I washed my hands, I started to think of Deji and my last encounter with him before I left Lagos. All I imagined were the many reasons why he would want to have a baby with me. He definitely liked me and wanted more but maybe he’s just too proud.
I walked out of the rest room feeling refreshed and a bit more confident. It was now time to get into the city of New York I whispered with a smile as I looked around.
Just as I was approaching the baggage reclaim area, I saw Rico waving with my luggage in a trolley.
“Thanks Rico. You saved the day.”
“I always do. Where are you headed?” He asked with a warm smile.

Episode 21

I was going to walk behind her immediately when my mum called my attention. I assured Ranti I was going to be with her shortly as I quickly sat in her bed.
"Is everything okay Cleo?” There's something off about your friend and her story. Are you hiding anything from me? Is she Ranti? How did you get the money for my surgery Cleo? I hope you didn't do something funny to get me out of the hospital Cleo?"

"Mum?" I shouted surprised at her questions. "After lot of things happen in one day. “It probably just escaped her mind. Ranti paid your bills and I didn't do anything funny please. Your nurse is here. She'll be taking care of you while I am away." I said pointing towards the nurse I had hired a few days ago. She came in at the perfect time to save me from a morning of questions and confessions. I stood up, gave her a peck on the forehead and walked out quickly.
"What was that about Ranti? Did you pay my mom's hospital bills?" I asked as I struggled to put my suitcase in the boot of the car while she watched me.
"Yes I did." She answered looking away.
"Ranti you don't have to lie to me too. Tell me the truth please and save me the confusion. Please Ranti I beg you." I said as I put my hands on her shoulder pressing it gently. If there was anything I wanted at that point, it was for her to think it was okay if it wasn't her who paid the hospital bills and I wasn't going to judge her.
"Cleo. I'm sorry, it wasn't me but I wanted to, trust me." She said holding my hands like that was going to make everything okay.
I couldn't believe what I had just heard. If it wasn't her then why did she claim to have paid the bills for my mom's surgery?.
"By the time I got there, the bills had been paid already." She continued.
"Paid for by whom?" I asked very anxious to get an answer."
"I wish I knew Cleo but I don't." She said trying to hold my hands again. All the while I wondered why a good deed like that could began to feel differently. I was happy that someone was kind enough to pay the bills but why would the person choose to be anonymous and why would someone else claim to be the one when she clearly isn't. Too many questions I had without answers. We entered the car heading to the office. We were quiet all through without saying a word or even looking at each other until we got to the office.

We got to the office early enough. My suitcase and bags were transferred to another car while the driver got ready to take me to the airport. While I stood there watching everyone discharge their duties, and also thinking of the way out from the dilemma I was in, Deji walked pass and casually said, "Hi Cleo Good Morning"
"Deji Good Morning. Can I have a minute with you please?" I asked as I walked behind him.
"You have a flight to catch. I don't think you have a minute." He replied as he finally stopped and turned in my direction.
"I do Deji. Thanks. So, I would like to ask a question I've asked before. I still can't figure out who paid my mom's hospital bill. Was it you? Can you just tell me. You were the only one who knew about it apart from Ranti and I’m sure it wasn't her."

"Okay. I’ll help you." He said calmly with a smile. I couldn’t remember when last I saw him smile. It was so charming I almost forgot what it was we were talking about. Was he about to say it was him. That would mean he still cares about me and I still stood a chance with him. I couldn't be happier as I watched him adjust his suit eagerly expecting a response.
"Didn't the hospital say who it was? They should have given you a description at least. Think!"
"A lady who was…"
"That's your answer right there. I'm not a lady. It wasn't me. Like I said earlier, you haven't exactly been the best person to me lately, so permit me if I didn't think it was going to be a good use of my money. Enjoy your trip Cleo." He said as he smiled and pointed in the direction of the driver who had been waiting for a while.

WHO ELSE IS HOPEFUL CLEO WILL GET THE ANSWER SHE HOPES FOR?

Episode 20

"So will you tell me what you are doing here?" I asked almost immediately I opened the door.
"Relax. My car developed an issue last night so I went home with the official car. I remembered Magnus was asked to pick you up this morning, so I decided to do that myself since it’s the same route." She said as she shoved me aside and walked into my house.
"So where's your mum?"
"Can you be quiet please?" I requested as I pulled her behind the door in order to have a quick conversation.
"I really don't know why you came here exactly. Just so you know, your explanation for being here makes no sense at all but you are here already. My mum is asking to meet you. So, you will go in there and give her the impression that we are very close friends and you did this to help a good friend. Make sure you also state the fact that I'll be paying back. It was a loan. Are we good now? I asked hoping all I had just said didn't go with the early morning wind.

"It's okay." She replied after taking a deep breath. "Show me her room please." She said laughing hard. I didn't quite understand why she was laughing and so I asked her again if we were good and she replied saying yes, this time confidently and with a straight face and so I led her to my mom's room.
As soon as we got into the room, she was all over my mum telling her how we could do anything for each other because we were very good friends and cared so much about each other. She acted out my instructions so well, I almost believed her story myself.

My mum expressed her gratitude to her and prayed for her as well. She also assured her we were going to pay back the loan in due time. While they had the conversation, I stood and looked at the clock continuously like there was a time bomb in the room waiting to explode. Ranti felt like a time bomb. Everything was going well but I just had the feeling something was going to go wrong if we didn't leave on time.

"Ranti hope the staff at the clinic were nice to you. I hope they didn't stress you in any way?"
"No not at all. I had a tight schedule in the office so as soon as I got to the hospital, I just made the payments and left almost immediately."
"Really?” My mum asked in surprised and I wondered why. Was something about to go wrong? We were almost on our way. Why these questions I wondered.
"Dr Zamani mentioned you requested for details of the treatment after you made payments and it took you both about almost an hour to go through the plan for surgery."

"Who is Dr Zamani? Oh yea we did." She replied after being quiet for a few seconds. "That didn't happen immediately. I had to go to the office briefly before returning for the discussion."
"Okay then.” My mum smiled patting her shoulders and looking at me. The same look she gave when she suspected me of being mischievous just this time the look wasn't as stern. I guess as a result of the state of her health at the time. She wasn't as strong yet. "Thank you my daughter. God bless you! I'll see you some other time." She said as Ranti stood up to take her leave.

Episode 19

“What is happening here?” A beautiful dark skinned lady asked as she walked in.
“Dara meet Cleo. Cleo this is my younger sister, Dara.”
“The same Cleo?” She asked with disappointment written all over her face. I was confused for words and so I walked out.
I was back in the hospital later that night. My mum was still in surgery. I found my way to the pharmacy this time, since the nurses I spoke to earlier didn’t seem to help.
“Can I have a morning after pill please?” I asked the pharmacist looking away.
“When did this happen?”
“What?” I replied acting like I didn’t understand what he meant.
He was quiet and didn't say anything else looking at me in the eyes. I knew I couldn’t escape the question.
“About 3 days ago.” I said lowering my voice.
“I’m sorry ma. The Morning after pill is only effective for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex ma. Why didn’t you get this earlier?” He asked looking confused.
While I was thinking of what to say, the doctor called me.

“Cleo, your mum is now in the intensive care unit. The surgery went well. You can come with me.” I followed him after smiling at the pharmacist leaving him to answer his question himself. My mum’s surgery was successful. I couldn’t be less happier. I guess I’ll just wait and have a pregnancy test when my period is due.

It was exactly two weeks after my mum’s surgery and my mum was recovering well. Dr Zamani asked that she stayed in the hospital a few weeks after her surgery just so the medical team could monitor her closely. Luckily for us what we feared most; her body rejecting the donor kidney never happened and so we were cleared from the hospital to take her home. While my mum was at the hospital, I thought I would get used to living alone but I just couldn’t. I was happy that my mum was back home. Thanks to Ranti and whoever it was that thought to pay my mum’s hospital bill so she could stay alive and come back to me.
"Cleopatra can I meet your friend who paid the bills for my surgery?" My mum asked as she stood up slowly from her bed to sit in her study chair.
"Yes of course." I replied trying to support her as she sat in the chair. I wasn’t sure whether to explain the whole situation to her or just play along that Ranti was a friend who cared. I didn't want to get her thinking just a few months she was away, her daughter whom she trusted had turned into someone else.
"Okay dear. Pls have her come over tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" I asked surprised at her urgent need to meet Ranti.

"You are not even strong enough." I said trying to get her to consider seeing Ranti at a later date, at least to make time for Ranti and I to get our stories straight so she wouldn't have to suspect otherwise.
"My God! Did I raise you?" She asked moving my face in the direction of hers so she could look into my eyes. "When people are kind to you, especially in a case like ours, you do not procrastinate expressing your gratitude." She said calmly gently pulling my hair backwards.
"Okay mum. She'll be here tomorrow." I assured her with a smile as I stood up and picked up my suitcase. It was the same day I was travelling for the conference in New York but I needed to get to the office first before leaving to the airport at noon.

"Hi Cleo. It's Ranti. Are you still home?" I heard a familiar voice say from the window. What could Ranti possibly be doing in my house at 6:30am I thought to myself and why does it have to be the same when my mum was requesting to meet with her.
"Is that the same Ranti?" My mum asked in excitement. “Let her in please."
"Okay." I replied with a smile that spelt confusion before dropping my suitcase and moving towards the entrance.
