1. The removal of fuel subsidy is enshrined in law. The PIA , sections 205 and 207 essentially say that the market should set the prices of fuel. Unless he wants to revoke the law, which he cannot do just like that, he needs the NA for that, and we do not know how the NA election would turn out to be..nothing can be done.

2. Nigeria has been borrowing to fund the budget for over ten years, and right now, borrowing is funding half of this year's budget. This is partly because subsidy payments till 2023 hindered our ability to raise enough revenue to pay for budgets, which worsened our debt, which is why ironically the tinubu government is borrowing more than other governments.

And our revenue is not going to increase. Nigerians have rejected the government widening the tax base, and the government has not diversifed our revenue streams, and even if they got serious about it today, it would take a very long time before we see returns.

So, any subsidy return would mean essentially that we are paying for it with borrowed money.


3. Because the pricing of crude oil is volatile and is not controlled by government...government cannot determine it, no matter what anyone says...a subsidy on crude, which is what atiku is talking about...is not going to work.

The problem with subsidy is, the government can budget say N12 trillion naira for it for say next year, and then all of a sudden, oil prices rise during the year, pushing up subsidy costs, and leading to government having to borrow to pay for the increased cost, which means more borrowing.

This is the situation, whether we do subsidy on 'petrol leaving the refinery' or subsidy based on selling crude at low prices to the refinery. Government cannot control actual production costs...and trying to do so would end in more borrowing.

It's even worse if crude oil prices fall. Not only does available revenue to pay for subsidy costs fall, but subsidy costs in naira may also rise, meaning more borrowing , meaning ...same story.

People abuse me on this site for saying this, but the problem with subsides is that production costs are not static. Unless your country is less than 50 million and producing eleven million barrels of crude a day, meaning that the revenue can pay for refinery maintenance and upgrades, and even pay for subsides and still have some left over, no country, oil producting or otherwise, can sustain subsides.

If Atiku says he will reinstate subsidy (in other words, make petrol cheaper) , then the vast majority of poor Nigerians whose lives have been made miserable from Day 1 of this useless Tinubu government would vote for him. Period.

Nobody is interested in being bamboozled by this irritating subsidy word. Nigerians want and deserve cheaper petrol and energy, that's it. However you achieve it is your business.

I am incredibly miffed by how he foolishly affirmed support for the removal of subsidy when the question was put to him at the NBA conference in Port Harcourt. No other candidate there did.

This man doesn't seem to understand who he is up against. Whether he actually believes in subsidy removal or not is not the issue. He should have either skillfully deflected (see how Donald Duke deflected by saying he doesn't believe in subsidy, that it is a scam), or outrightly declare that on the strength of the evidence of the aftermath of subsidy removal by Tinubu, that he now believes that subsidy must be reinstated to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. This is populist, but it is also realist FAIR politics, considering how demonic the APC is and the fact that they played and are still playing far more evil politics.

At this point Peter Obi needs to step aside and ask his supporters to support Atiku.

Removing Tinubu is an imperative that is bigger than everything else. Nigeria should rather collapse or cease to exist than have Tinubu retain power. It is a matter of life and death.

No fumbling and wobbly 'gentlemanly' rubbish politics by Peter Obi should stand in the way of this categorical imperative.

I previously canvassed for a joint Atiku/Obi ticket as the invincible nuclear bomb, sure fire way to get rid of Tinubu at the ballot, but these two men's clumsiness didn't make this happen. So Peter Obi needs to comot for road since he does not understand the gravity of the task at hand. If he needs to be stampeded out of the race to pave the way for someone more brutal and serious like Atiku, then so should it be.

Either way Tinubu has to go, by hook or crook. The end will justify the means, whichever way.

You have my full support. Tinubu must be ejected by any means necessary. It is a matter of life and death.

The problem with Peter Obi's position is that apart from a few points he may get for consistency, which rarely translates to electoral fortunes, his defense of subsidy removal is neither good politics nor good policy. The political sentiment in Nigeria has soured on subsidy removal because Nigerians have seen and are groaning from its aftermath. And the policy side of subsidy removal too is now in tatters, discredited by the failure of any of its many promised benefits to materialize.

Even though I know that Peter Obi will be the best, non-violent 'reset' that Nigeria needs, I am currently of the view that removing Tinubu BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY is more important than ensuring that Peter Obi becomes president. I am thoroughly ambivalent at this point.
