Car Talk / 2010 Matrix S - Wheel And Tyre Upgrade by HenriXI(m): 10:31pm On Oct 19, 2023
Hello… I recently got a 2010 Matrix S and it came with an aftermarket 16” wheel and 215/60R16 tyres.

I want to upgrade to either a 17” or 18” set (on low profile Tyres) but I need advice from people that own same car and are running on either 17” or 18” wheels without rubbing issues on a full turn. (Particularly in front).

I’m looking at going for either 225/50R17, 235/45R17 or 225/45R18.

Please share your advice and current wheel and tyre setup (possibly a picture of what it looks like from the side).

Thanks.

Car Talk / Venza Navi (JBL Synthesis) To Android DVD Upgrade by HenriXI(m): 9:24pm On Jan 12, 2021
Guys,

Please i need inputs from people that have upgraded their Venza audio system from the factory Navigation Screen (JBL Synthesis Audio) to the aftermarket Android systems...

I'm told by a seller that the android head unit will come with a CAN-BUS that'll integrate smoothly with my factory JBL Amplifier and the performance will be same as my factory radio.

Fact is, i LOVE the audio quality from the factory JBL stereo... And won't want to loose that for the Android experience.

Did you do this upgrade on your Venza?
How did it affect your Audio Quality?

Please share your suggestions...

Thank you.
Car Talk / 09/10 Venza Oxygen Sensor & Fuel Guage Issue by HenriXI(m): 2:00pm On Nov 21, 2020
Good afternoon everyone...

Please i need advice on some issues i am experiencing with my vehicle. i use an 09/10 Venza V6 and i recently changed my fuel pump assembly (The whole plastic that sits inside the fuel tank under the rear driver side seat. it had the Pump, Filter and gauge along with it. - Tokumbo)

after the installation, i noticed that my fuel pin on the dashboard doesn't move as it used to (i initially felt my car had been more fuel efficient after the installation). i kept using the vehicle until it went off in the middle of the road - at this time, my fuel gauge was showing that i had about 25% of fuel left in the tank. long story short - my mechanic came, did his thing and - there was no fuel in the tank.

Fast-forward to where i am now.

I'm made to understand my Venza has two fuel gauges, One on the fuel pump assembly and another under the passenger side seat.

I'm told that the number on the fuel gauge variable resistor (SIM CARD as my mechanic calls it) has to match before the gauge can work well. now the rear passenger seat side has a SIM CARD with the number 125 while the one on the fuel gauge i just replaced has 108 on it...

my mechanic had a gauge in his shop with the 108 SIM CARD (taken from a Camry gauge) so he simply swapped it out for the 125 that was on the opposite side.

The gauge seem to work better but its still not perfect. Two days ago i had just about half tank of fuel when i pulled into a fuel station to refuel. to my surprise it took 61 Litres to fill my tank (and we all know that Venza tank is about 67Litres in capacity). so obviously i had lower fuel in my tank than what was showing on my dash.

I was at Toyota yesterday and i was given a bill of 43k (for parts alone) for a gauge with this part number 83320-0T010.
43k for a fuel gauge is pretty expensive.

Second issue is about my Oxygen sensor - I'm Getting a P0156 Code that has to do with Oxygen Sensor Circuit (Bank 2 Sensor 2).

Toyota sells this sensor for #75,210 (75k) with part number 89465-0T010.

Please share your thoughts on a more affordable way i can sort out this issues.

Thank you in anticipation... (#I don't Live In Lagos)
Car Talk / 08 Lexus ES 350 Tesla Style Android DVD Player Review by HenriXI(m): 1:03pm On Aug 01, 2019
Greetings

I'm planning on replacing my Stock 2008 Lexus ES 350 dashboard DVD with the Tesla style unit...

Considering the cost, I'll love to hear from people that currently have it installed on their vehicles so i don't end up buying something I'll regret...

1) Have you had any concerns with the unit - like the AC controls etc...

2) What is the sound Quality like - Better, same or worse as compared to the Stock unit?

3) Will it fit my current setup - like plug and play? (my car has the factory Navigation touchscreen).

NB: My car currently has the factory Navigation screen and Reverse camera.

Please share your experience.

Thank you.

I sent him a PM and there was no response whatsoever, meanwhile I had devoted over 30 minutes to researching his problem.

Seconded

Okay, let me come in and settle this dust...

First of all i sincerely appreciate the contributions and assistance you all offered me - i mean everyone that contributed/commented on this post...

@AutoElectNG, i must acknowledge i couldn't access that PM - Yes i got the notification that I've got an unread message but it kept taking me to my Gmail inbox when i clicked on it. (my ignorance is finally exposed - Lol). Coupled with work and the stress of pushing out cash & not getting desired results at the time. So I'm really sorry about that.

Diagnosing a car you've not seen or ran tests on isn't cheap - cars have complex inter-related systems and you can only do that after getting CREDIBLE over-the-air troubleshooting details from the person who has hands-on the car.

You all contributed based on your experiences and i too learned alot from the process. (that includes how to respond to posts online)

The reason i brought this topic here was cuz my mechanic asked that i get a new transmission. I don't know very much but i felt that wasn't the problem. If you read through my first post, you'll get the details.

When @kingreignn confirmed it was a transmission issue after his test drive and electrical tests, i had to make that decision to get the transmission replaced.

I believe strongly that we learn everyday. Yes - if i could have spotted the issue earlier, i would have avoided the extra cash on the transmission etc. Then again, there is a possibility that i would have sold my car for a give away price if we didn't spot the issue when we did.

Please let's not flare up and eventually erode this good relationship... You wouldn't believe i fetched Autologic's contact from his profile this evening and realised i already have his contact on my phone. Perhaps we've had dealings when i was running Auto diagnosis training in Lagos.

Mike @kingreignn is a great guy please work with him when you can. Yes - i offered him cash after the diagnosis but he didn't take it. He was in touch on WhatsApp and via calls through the time. (we still talk afterwards)

Please let this be a learning point for us all and a platform to build a strong relationship on resolving automobile and perhaps life issues. I want to be able to call on you all when I'm in search for solutions...

Infact everyone...

I appreciate you guys.

Please I'm still waiting for a buyer for my transmission. It's in my house now... Please help with a contact who needs it... I'll definitely sell for less... Just gimme a good offer...

Thank you very much Guys for the inputs and assistance you've offered me through this time...

It was really a rough time for me cuz i did the paying (for the various attempts) while we all did the learning...

@AutoElectNG, please pardon me for not updating this post as often as i should have done. Please put yourself in my shoes. (I've replaced 2 front wheel speed sensors @30k, ABS Pump Assembly @65k, 2 transmission VSS @25k each, the transmission itself @100k + 2 4 litres of WS Gear oil @34k and the Instrument Cluster @30k). Bros, i needed time to recuperate...

Well, the issue was actually the Instrument cluster... After replacing the instrument cluster, everything worked fine - meaning my old transmission and everything else was working fine.

It's really hard troubleshooting these modern semi-complex electrical and computer controlled vehicles. If this is the case with a small 2010 Toyota Corolla, then what would be the case on more complex brands like Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi and the likes...

It's a learning curve and I'm sure someone out there will see this post early enough and not have to go through what i went through.

Let's i forget, please link me up to buyers for my transmission. Help me get some money back.

You can reach me on 08033149441.

Once again, Thank you for everything. I appreciate.

My current Instrument cluster is attached in the picture here... Sorry i took the picture at night and YES!!! on the express... Lol.

Car Talk / Re: 3second Rattle At Startup Or Timing Correlation Codes? by HenriXI(m): 2:03am On Jun 25, 2018
GAZZUZZ:
you startup a modern day vehicle from cold start, it rattles for a few secs (kakakakakakakakakakaa) then noise goes away like nothing happened. No performance issues, no noise. But when ever vehicle stands still inactive for about 5-6hrs and you startup again, you have the startup rattle.

If you have this problem, it is almost certain you have a defective VTC actuator.

VTC stands for Variable Timing control, As engine rpm builds, the VTC actuator - controlled by the engine computer that monitors cam position, ignition timing, exhaust emission and throttle position - advances or retards the intake cam throughout a range , optimizing engine output and reducing emissions.

So in summary, the intake camshaft is not static, but variable.

When defective it rattles for a few secs until a buildup of oil pressure keeps it stable, so basically it's inability to hold oil makes it rattle for a few seconds.

Causes of this defect could arise from the use of wrong oil grades (20w50 people unna weldone) and Defect in production.

Now here's the interesting part of this topic.

Once in a while I used to receive vehicles with very quite engines but re.tarded or advanced timing error codes on the engine computer, after advanced diagnosis we would notice that the intake VTC cam was welded firmly in place angry it was very common in the corrolas with the 2zr engines, and the honda with the K24Z engines, the symptoms exhibited were a terrible loss of power and correlation codes on timing.

So now that you know, before you buy that Nigerian used car, if you notice any funny timing codes and a previously breached timing cover just know that VTC might be welded in 1 position.

This is a very interesting topic to me because I'm currently having a similar experience with my 2010 corolla S (with 2ZR engine).

I have this rattling kind of noise for the engine compartment many times when i startup the car in the morning and also when I'm leaving the office at close of work after the car had been parked since morning.

It doesn't happen when the car is in use throughout the day (that's after it happens on first startup). Until its parked for a long time.

I did some research and realised it's a factory issue that can be corrected (TSB attached).

Please can you give me a quote on the parts I'll need, and the cost. Cuz I'm not in Lagos but we can work something out and you waybill the parts to me.

Thanks in advance.

Curious question #2...Tell me a little about your speedometer needle...does it work? Does it behave normally or eratically?

The speedometer needle works fine - That's obvious in the picture i posted earlier. And it doesn't behave erratic.

But there's something i noticed today.

I tried viewing the Vehicle Speed live data from the Engine/ECU part of my scan tool, but it registered 0 mph even when the vehicle was in motion... (Picture attached)

N/B: If i view the live data from the ABS/TRAC/VSC part of my scan tool, the vehicle speed registers correctly and exactly as it is on my vehicle speedometer.

With these findings its fair to say that the vehicle isn't getting signals from the transmission mounted VSS at all...

N/B: I'm using a new transmission and the VSS that came with it.

How do i proceed from here

Should i ask an auto electrician to strip the wire harness all the way to check for frayed wiring

Curious question #1...Tell me a little about your brake light...is it permanently ON or does it only come on in response to braking input?

Share with me the data that you intended to share originally, my email is in my signature if it needs to be emailed, otherwise you may wish to post it here

I'm sorry I've been off for some days now... I've actually been dealing with the money I've lost over the past 3 weeks trying to find solutions to my car issues...

I had the car checked by Mike @Kingreign and he confirmed it's a transmission issue...

Yes!!! I got a new transmission. It was carefully installed (with two gallons of original Toyota WS oil @17k each - that set my account about 150k backwards)

And the result was undesirably the same...

It shifts from 1-3 and stays there. Same P0500 code.

To respond to your questions, Yes the brake lights come up only when i step on the brakes.

what country of manufacture is your corolla?
Note:some toyota VSS mated to their transmission and rats loves these wires.

side note: Forget those big companies names. where's your location?

Canada (What we popularly call American spec).

I learnt that some 08/09 corolla has VSS with something like a sprocket on the tip where it meets with a rotating part inside the transmission when fitted in position.

My transmission does have that space but it came sealed. The only VSS here is the one i showed on the picture above.

My location is Akwa Ibom state.

What's your background if you don't mind?

I've been with Coscharis motors for a while so i have a fair knowledge of vehicles (Studied Mech. Engr in school tho!). The Foxwell Scan tool is mine and i also own a wireless UCANDAS diagnostic & Programming tool.

I can fetch you the data you need and if we have to, i can work with you on the phone to try out different things.

Does your abs module establish any communication with the scan tool i.e can you access information from your abs module

If i could get live data from the ABS wheel speed sensors, i believe YES! There's communication with the ABS module.

Check it out on the Foxwell scan tool picture attached.

What do you think?
Car Talk / Please Help With My 2010 Corolla P0500 Issue by HenriXI(m): 11:52am On Jun 18, 2018
Hi Guys,

Please i need help with my 2010 corolla S P0500 (Vehicle Speed sensor) issue.

Since i got the vehicle August last year, everything has been functioning well except for the ABS, VSC OFF (blinking) & skid control lights on the dashboard. My mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and told me the ABS Pump Assembly was bad and needed replacement... (the code was C1246 - Malfunction in master cylinder pressure sensor). All these didn't affect the vehicle performance except that it would skid when i push hard on the brakes.

Recently I've replaced the ABS Pump Assembly but i now have a P0500 code and my car only shifts between gear 1 and 3. I sometimes have very low RPM when I'm idling too.

Please i need some advice on what to do cuz I've tried the following...
1) I've put back my previous ABS Pump Assembly and it's still the same (now with the abs lights on and check light on too - P0500 & C1246 codes). N/B the new ABS Pump Assembly has the same numbers on them (44540-02110 89541-12450. 133800-4290 QK.)

2) I've replaced the gearbox speed sensor (shown in the picture attached). And it still didn't solve the problem.

3). I've had an auto electrician trace the wires from the gearbox sensor all the way to where it enters the brainbox and he has confirmed there's continuity.

4) All the wheel speed sensors are okay and they are reading correctly (As shown on Live data on a diagnosis machine - Picture attached).

5) I've replaced my vehicle ECU (as directed by my mechanic - he suggested they might have interchanged polarities when they tried jumpstarting the vehicle after i parked it for a long time) and it still didn't solve the problem.

Please i need your inputs cuz I've spent money trying lots of ideas and the latest of them all is that my mechanic asked me to get a new gearbox.

My RPM get's high up to 3600 @ 100km/hr and even up to 4500 @ 120km/hr... Very abnormal

Please if you've experienced this kinda problem, share how you got out of it.

N/B: My odometer wasn't engineered, there's actually 103k now - display ink issue i guess.

Thanks in advance.

Car Talk / Re: Upgrading From 195/65R15 To 205/65R15 Tyres On My 2004 Corolla S by HenriXI(m): 8:47am On Mar 24, 2017
abes:

It will increase the ground clearance. Lets do the calculations

For the 195/65R15, the height is 65% of 195, that is 126.75mm

For the 205/65R15, the height is 65% of 205, that is 133.25mm

The difference in height is 133.25mm - 126.75mm = 6.5mm

Since he's using the same size for the rims, then the ground clearance will only increase by 6.5mm

But make sure there is enough room for the tyres to be installed.

And note that car will move faster than the current speedometer reading.

Thank you very much for your input... evidently a problem shared is half solved... i like the mathematical analysis @abes

i shared this concern in another forum and i got a link to a site that does tire size comparison. 205/65R15 is sure higher than 195/65R15 though by a very small margin... (here's a screenshot of what i had online).

However, in reality it could be different...
Since i have people here who own my same kind of vehicle and run on 205/65R15 without issues, i think I'll go with the 205/65R15 then i'll also share my experience...

Any Tyre type you might recommend? (Maxxis on my mind... 25k each down here #South).

Fellow Corolla S Owners,

Please i need your inputs on the following subjects;

1) I'm about buying new tyres for my 2004 corolla S but i'm considering the idea of Changing my stock (195/65R15) tyres to 205/65R15 so i can have some ground clearance (considering where i'm staying). i need to know if i'll have any issues with the new tyre size. N/B: I'm not running on stock wheels (pic attached).

2) Please who has details on where i can get this complete 05-07 corolla Sport bumper(with the left and right sport bumper lip) and headlights (Picture attached).

If you're currently running on 205/65R15 with my kind of wheels on a corolla S, i'll love to see how well it fits on the vehicle.

Thanks in Advance...

Good morning all, please i need your inputs here.
I'm upgrading a 2008 Toyota Corolla to have the looks of a 2012 corolla. I'm trying to have all the kits I'll need before beginning the process.
Apart from these, what other stuff would i possibly need?

1) Front Bumper (plus Grill)
2) Rear Bumper
3) Headlights
4) Side mirrors with turn signals
5) New Boot (trunk lid) plus Spoiler and silver lining
6) Read lights (4 pieces)

Here are my Questions;
1) what's missing on my list?
2) is it possible i buy and install steering buttons on my steering wheel?... If yes, where can i buy em? (contact needed)
3) Can i add USB port to my stock radio? (just AUX available) 4) Where can i get the Corolla Sport Side skirts and bumper extensions?...

I anticipate your response.
Thank you.

I have used my 2005 Accord V6 for 4yrs and yet to change ball joint or transmission, the car is an amazing car if well cared for. Change the Engine every 6000 miles or once a year with Mobile 1 5w-30 oil, pay attention to the noise coming from the legs of your car and change the ball joint if your mech say it is the culprit.
Also use the original Honda ATF for your transmission, go ahead and get your car bro.

Thanks a million @Chucky, your information is really helpful (coming from an Accord owner). Its gonna be my first Honda car (i own a 96 camry). I would like to know what to look out for when buying the car cuz i don't have enough to go for a direct toks. I intend getting a Naija used instead. What are em things i should look out for so i don't buy myself issues. We can talk privately on WhatsApp tho #08033149441 (Henry).

Honda cars like German cars are premium rated, people use cheap ATF in their Honda cars instead of the original Honda ATF then come out here to say that Honda cars has transmission problems, LIARS.
Same applies to the "Naija leg pulling" myth, people don't pay attention to their ball joints but put the blame on Honda.
The Accord is an amazing car built for your comfort and premium driving experience.

In essence, you mean i can still proceed with buying the honda with the condition that i change the ball joint regularly and use the recommended Honda transmission oil.
If this is the case, what's the recommended mileage to change the ball joints and when I'm replacing them, what do i look out for (to verify the quality).?

I went with a friend for inspection of an 04 Accord last month and he was very much on the discouraging side... He said-and i quote "the front tyres ALWAYS pull off after a while"... I must confess i had to slow down on the purchase because I've withnessed that model of honda break down on the road several times... Many times it's the cause of congestion on the road as the tyre would bend and the car rests directly on the tyre damaging the front fender and perhaps other stuff.
Now my question is... Could this be as a result of poor maintenance one the owners side or that model particularly was badly designed?
