By CHIDI NKWOPARA OWERRI—No fewer than 12 pensioners collapsed, yesterday, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium Complex, Owerri, Imo State, during a meeting with Governor Rochas Okorocha. The collapsed pensioners were, however, revived by Red Cross officials and, thereafter, rushed to the hospital for more medical attention. Pensioners from across the state were at the stadium to collect arrears of unpaid pension. Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa, told Vanguard, in a telephone interview, that “the senior citizens were paid on the spot, while those who could not make it to the stadium were asked to approach the sub-treasuries in their council areas.” Earlier, Okorocha had told the pensioners that he was unhappy that the unpaid three-month arrears were inherited from the Achike Udenwa’s administration. He said every July 18 will be celebrated as “Pensioners Day” in the state, promising that all outstanding pensions must be paid by his government. Okorocha donated a bus to the state branch of Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, and a car to the chairman of Imo NUP. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/12-pensioners-collapse-at-meeting-with-okorocha/ |
By OLA AJAYI IBADAN — A Consultant Surgeon, Accident and Emergency Unit, University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr. Olukayode Oyetunde, yesterday told the Commission of Enquiry set up by Governor Abiola Ajimobi to probe the mayhem induced by the crises in the state chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, that 38 victims of the bloody clash between factions of the Union were brought to the hospital after the attack on June 5. The doctor said that most of the victims had gunshot and machete injuries when they were rushed to the teaching hospital. He gave his testimony just as the Deputy National Secretary of the NURT W, Chief John Olaoye, said the national leadership of the union did not recognize any of the warring factions led by Alhaji Lateef Akinsola and Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi. To the national leaders of the union, there has been no legal state executive member since 1999 after the expiration of the tenure of a former chairman of the union, Chief James Ojewumi. Olaoye told the Justice Olagoke Ige(rtd) led panel that the union leadership did not support how Alhaji Akinsola hijacked the chairmanship of the union from Chief Ojewunmi on August 17, 1999 , noting that it contravened the constitution of the drivers’ union. On the claim of Alhaji Akinsola that he is still the authentic chairman of the union, the national leader said it was wrong for him to still hold tenaciously to the title after spending twelve years. While giving evidence at the panel, Ojewunmi said he was overthrown by some members of the union at gunpoint. According to him, “heavily armed members of the union asked me under duress to stand up and hand over my seat to Akinsola who was then sitting beside me as my deputy. Initially, I resisted but some policemen at the place persuaded me to do so for my own sake. It was then I reluctantly handed over to him. I was also forced to raise his hand up to show that I have handed over to him.” The forceful takeover of the chairmanship of the union, he said, was the genesis of the crises. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/nurtw-clash-38-victims-admitted-to-hospital-tribunal-told/ |

By Olasunkanmi Akoni LAGOS — President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, directed the Ecological Fund Office in the Presidency to work out modalities for the release of ecological fund to Lagos State Government with a view to finding immediate and necessary solutions to the flood that has continued to ravage the metropolis. This came as Lagos State Government has awarded contracts for the upgrading of all identified canals, noting that it will require billions of Naira to effectively solve the traumatic problems of flooding in the state. Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office in the Presidency, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, who, yesterday, led a delegation of Federal Government officials along with the state Commissioners for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello and Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed on an assessment tour of the worst hit flooded areas in Lagos State, expressed the readiness of the Federal Government to collaborate with the Lagos State Government as part of intervention measure to forestall future occurrence. Some of the areas visited by the delegation included: Elere channel, Oko-Oba channel both by old Abattoir, Abeokuta Expressway, Agege; Casso Bus-stop, along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway; Down Stream, Oko-Oba/Aboru channels at Pleasure, Iyana-Ipaja; Arigbanla channel, Oke-Koto by Alfa Nla Street as well as some beaches in Lekki where the Atlantic Ocean has eroded several meters of land. Answering questions from newsmen, Odusote assured that the President would expedite action to ensure prompt implementation of recommended solutions, even if it meant by-passing some bureaucratic processes. Also, speaking with newsmen, Bello who said the state government required billions of Naira to combat flood menace in the state, explained that the flood’s devastating impact had jolted the state government to the reality of the inadequacies of its present drainage system. He added that the state government has applied to the Federal Government for aid, through the Ecological Fund Office. He also disclosed that the state government has commenced demolition of all marked structures built on or along canals and water channels. He listed the areas to include, Ajegunle, Surulere, Obalende, Oshodi, Apapa, Epe among others. Bello also announced that the state government has awarded various contracts to experts on the upgrading of various canals saying the state government would not wait for FG’s intervention alone even as he described the intervention as a welcome development. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/flood-jonathan-directs-release-of-ecological-fund-to-lagos/ |
ENUGU — NATIONAL Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, yesterday, explained that the former Biafran leader and Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, undergoing treatment for stroke in London, was not abandoned by his family, Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi or the party. Umeh said Ojukwu had been under excellent medical care since he took ill last December 1. He stated that from the time Ojukwu was attacked by stroke till now, “he had been under generous support by his wife, Bianca; APGA and the governor of Anambra State.” Umeh dismissed media reports insinuating that the Ikemba had been abandoned in an old peoples’ home in London as an act of mischief and blackmail. At a briefing in Enugu on Ojukwu’s health, he said Ojukwu’s survival till date was because of God’s mercy as all the patients he met at the Intensive Care Unit of the London Clinic before and those admitted after him died from different ailments had died, adding that it was a great miracle. APGA chairman said Governor Obi had promptly settled Ojukwu’s medical bills since he moved to the London hospital, explaining that he had enjoyed the best medical treatment overseas, having been placed under the care of medical experts in Nigeria and abroad. He said: “Our attention has been drawn to several media articles, both on the internet and in some magazines, insinuating that the leader of APGA, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has been abandoned in his ill-health. I wish to speak on this matter as the national chairman of APGA and, hereby, state without any equivocation that Dim Ojukwu has been under excellent medical care since he took ill December 1, 2010.” “From the time he was attacked by stroke till the present day he has been under generous support by his wife, Bianca Ojukwu, the APGA and His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, Governor of Anambra State. When he first took ill on December 1, he was immediately looked after by two Professors of Medicine here in Enugu namely Professor Vincent Ike, a Consultant Cardiologists and Professor Augustine Nwabueze, a British-trained Consultant Neuro physician. Under their close watch, Dim Ojukwu was managed with excellent medical knowledge within the first two weeks and when he slipped into coma on December 19, 2010 he was immediately moved to the UNTH Enugu where he was taken in by the Intensive Care Unit of the Teaching Hospital. “Before he slipped into coma efforts were initiated and intensified to fly him abroad. We had to go through the process of getting visa and arranging Air Ambulance to evacuate him from Nigeria. When the situation was deteriorating, efforts were intensified in all these directions and successfully on December 23, Dim Ojukwu was flown to London by a German Air Ambulance that came directly from France to Enugu to take him. He was accompanied on that trip under very critical condition by his dear wife, Bianca Ojukwu and his Chief of Staff, Prince Bob Onyema. Two of them with the Ambulance Team left Enugu airport for London under very critical condition. “In London, he was immediately admitted at the London Clinic where he was moved into the Intensive Care Unit, ICU. From December 2010 to March 2011, Ojukwu remained in the ICU of London Clinic. It was by the mercy of God that he went through that process and recovered consciousness and came out of ICU. There is no gainsaying that all the people he met at the ICU, I mean co-patients including those that came in after him all died except him to the Glory of God. “When he recovered sufficiently at the London Clinic, he was moved to Wellington Hospital still in London where he stayed between March and May this year. There his recovery was intensely facilitated. When he improved substantially, he was again moved to Lydenhill Therapeutic Centre in Twyford which is very famous in the world for physiotherapy. All these three hospitals mentioned enjoy excellent facilities with very brilliant doctors and other professionals. “At the Lynenhill centre, he had chest infection due to cough and he was quickly moved to Berkshire hospital that was nearby the Therapeutic Centre and he has since been there under excellent care and he is responding to treatment. All his medical bills from December 23 when he was moved to London and around these various hospitals, had been promptly paid by the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi till date.” Umeh further stated that Ojukwu’s wife, Bianca had been with him in London all through except on the occasional times she visited Nigeria to see her children and take care of the few house needs before going back to London and “as I speak with you today, she is still in London and I have spoken with her this morning.” “Since Ojukwu’s movement to London I as the National Chairman of APGA and my wife have visited him in February and also visited him after the election in May where I went to brief him on the outcome of the elections. The governor of Anambra State had also visited him. When I was in London, our new Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Rochas Okorocha came on May 13 with his wife and I took them to the hospital where they saw Ojukwu. “Other notable members of our party have also visited Ojukwu in London since then. The acting Nigerian High Commissioner to London, His Excellency, Ambassador Dozie Nwanna who hails from Awka, since Ojukwu’s arrival in London on December 23, became part of the daily routine for monitoring his health, first as the Nigerian High Commissioner to London and two, as an Igbo man including his wife,” he said. According to Umeh, former Health Minister, Dr. Tim Menakaya, Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and so many other Igbos had visited Ojukwu in London, adding that at the London Clinic and Wellington hospital “Ojukwu is known as a General and excellent and qualified professionals took special interest in him and they said they have never had such a patient in their history going by the way people had been coming to see him, that he must be a famous man.” He said that the situation had made several people to go into the internet to read about Ojukwu just as any nurse that was attached to him saw it as a privilege and would give him the best service. The APGA leader declared that Ojukwu who would be 78 in November this year, had never lacked care to warrant the media outburst that he had been abandoned in old people’s home, describing the reports as premeditated acts of blackmail. He insisted that Ojukwu had remained under exceptional care and love since throughout his indisposition, saying even though the stroke that inflicted him was a massive one, “it has been a difficult situation to manage but for the excellent facilities, the ingenuity of the medical personnel and the grace of God it would have been a different story today. Umeh stated that it was needless talking about the cost of keeping Ojukwu alive because “no cost will be too much to bear to keep him alive” adding that cost was not a consideration in the way he was being managed. He, however, called on Nigerians and Ndigbo to continue to pray for Ojukwu’s quick recovery. |

A loan of L6.7 million was made to the National Investment and Properties Co., Ltd. for building projects out of which only L500, 000 was ever re-paid. The Western Region Finance Corporation and the West Nigeria Development Corporation also received loans of millions of pounds, which were never re-paid. The Foster-Sutton Tribunal felt that Zik did not severe his connections to the bank when he became a Minister. The Tribunal believed that Zik continued to use his influence to further the interests of ACB…" You wouldnt want me to tell you your history of the corrupt bunch you have in recent times. Do you? You know them but I wont mention names. Ode, read mumu, I know as usual you wont understand because you have a crack head, The collaboration of other parts of Nigeria would be understandable, seeing that by 1964, the Eastern region was already touted as the fastest growing economy in the world by research reports commissioned by the World Bank and by Harvard University in the United States. The Eastern Nigerian Economic reconstruction plan (1954-1964) - the ten year plan - drawn by the visionary Zik, and the eminently brilliant Mbonu Ojike, the most acute economic mind of that generation of argonauts, and later fully implemented by the inimitable Michael Okpara, had placed the East on a development route, that by the 1960s all the talk of "Igbo domination" was merely a metaphor of the progress in the East. The institutions like the African Continental Bank, Eastern Nigerian Development Corporation, University of Nigeria , Nigercem, Nigergas, Nigersteel, Factory, glass industries, hotels, farm settlements, Aba Textile company, Golden Guinea Breweries in Umuahia, Standard Shoe Factory in Owerri, etc. The products and services of these institutions and businesses were first class. Thus, people had full employment. With the economy growing annually at between 10 and 12%, the Eastern Nigerian economy was one of the fastest growing worldwide. The Eastern Nigerian government was the pacesetter in development and the regional governments in the West and the North responded almost like copycats. For instance, when the University of Nigeria was established in 1960 with campuses at Nsukka and Calabar, the Akintola government responded in 1962 by building the University of Ife now named Obafemi Awolowo University and the Northern Regional government replied by building Ahmadu Bello University at Zaria. Also when Zik built the African Continental Bank to help in the formation of indigenous capital and the empowerment of our people who could not obtain bank facilities from the foreign owned banks of those years, Awolowo quickly built the National Bank and the Sardauna established Bank of the North. When Okpara employed the services of the Israelis to build Nigeria's first farm settlements, the Western Nigerian government quickly followed suit. I am done with this back and forth rubbish, oponu. Have a nice sunday with Tinubu. |
