USA joined the war on December 7th 1941. after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. Japan was at the peak of its powers then. Point of correction, it was the US that demoralized Japan. Without dropping the atomic bombs, Japan would never have given up. You are talking about people who had suicide planes (kamikaze) suicide boats, suicide divers etc.. The entire Japanese population was mobilized for war. It would have been a long and bloody war without the atomic bombs. In fact, citizens were still pumped to fight after the two bombs. It was until the Emperor announced cease fire that the real surrender happened.

ICBM is just a phrase. Any missile that can travel long distances ( over 5,000 miles) is considered an ICBM. They can either carry nuclear or non nuclear payloads.
