Henry VIII had him arrested and hanged. It still doesn't change the fact that the first English Bible was from an English man. |

Chigold101: Are you talking about who printed English Bible or who gave us Bible...
Having said that the first English Bible was actually printed in Germany...
England banned Bible and many burnt many people on the stake for coming into Britain with the Bible The first English Bible was printed in England in the 1500s by William Tyndale. Though the first printed copy of the Bible was produced in Germany, it wasn't written in English. It was written in Vulgate Latin. |

Goel: Civilisation doesn't mean nationstate. China is one of oldest nationstates, not settlements. First humans settled on Africa and then first Aryans settled somewhere between India and Iran. Later they migrated around the world. Chinese are mongoloidal race which came into existence after mutations in body of Aryans which stopped or inhibited various facial changes with age and that's why Chinese Japanese look that away. Since humans went to East Asia after India and Europe, they were late to settle.
As far Chinese are concerned, they teach in their country that humans came into existence in China and not Africa. No point bothering on that if you are using a Chinese source.
If that is the case with nairaland, then belief about west building civilisation must be to some highly underdeveloped and uneducated societies. Here in Asia wherever I have travelled, west is known to be more rich and advanced than rest of world due to some reasons in past 3-4 centuries. Not credited with building world at all. I perfectly understand that civilization does not mean Nationhood. Yes, the Chinese are fiercely jingoistic and xenophobic, which has seeped into teachings that humanity stemmed from China, just like the Nazis did by siting fake archeological finds to buttress their teachings on the superiority of the Aryan race. So when I am not reading from Chinese authors when I say China is one of the most ancient civilizations. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Man Ordered To Leave Mall In South Africa For Wearing 'Indecent' African Attire by hermesprogidy(m): 6:53am On Mar 29, 2021 |
Goel: They are a minority. China was a way later entry into civilisation. So anyone crediting them for founding modern languages is a rarely attended group of archaeologists.
Importance also lies here equally. We are only comparing important inventions and China lags behind in quantity since it was new to civilize.
Nor Chinese inventions were exclusive. Developing paper or some similar writing platform wasn't a challenge for people from other parts of world. Chinese martial arts itself came from India and Mongolia. Many of Chinese inventions were reinvented around world by other societies themselves.
Chinese have done a distinct challenging thing; invention of gun powder, guns and war rockets. Even those were reinvented in Southeast Asia and Indian subcontinent later.
Compass was a great deal, without it, world would have been 300-400 years late to connect but not paper. Paper was easily assimilable.
Maths and medical science made world a completely different place. I rather recommend you to not to make it versus all these inventions from all parts of world had significant role in what we are today.
Nobody believes that western people built civilisation, even Westerners themselves. They know that they were first to do things on industrial scale what eastern people used to do on small scale. Even Europeans also contributed a lot in ancient era during Roman empire.
It's in fact entire Eurasia which built world civilisation. Europe + Middleast + India + East Asia. These societies dominated world in intellect and innovation in that era too. These are the societies which colonised each other, played great games and fought world wars. These are the societies which even today are growing economically over their own other peers to take control over the world. Even the new entry in competition called USA was settled by these societies themselves. Lol, your write up makes it look like China is a newbie in human civilization. China (Shang Dynasty) is one of the four ancient civilizations in hostory, in fact it is credited to be the most ancient continuous civilization in human history it has been around since ancient Egyptian civilization. The only civilization that precedes it is Sumeria/Babylon. You are wrong when you say nobody believes that Westerners built civilization. You can only speak for yourself. Infact, it was one narrow-minded comment where someone asked what has China invented that drew me into this thread. Take a simple poll on Nairaland and judge for yourself. |

Goel: First written languages came from Iran, Egypt or somewhere else in middleeast but first paper came from China for sure. Modern mathematical digits are Arabic numerals which are derived from Hindu numerals of Gupta empire (Indian dynasty).
Mathematics at large from digits to trigonometry and even all modern complex calculations came from India, Iran and Arabia. Even first human civilisations were invented in these countries. Chinese discovered many great things like gunpowder. But calling them as mother of invention is exaggeration. They are old as country but very new as a civilisation. Iran, Egypt, India, Egypt and Europe, all had settled when Chinese used to do tribal dance with mongols in jungles. It's not clear exactly where writing was invented, some will say ancient Mesopotamia, some credit the Indus Valley civilization, but archeologists also credit China. I still maintain my stance that China is the mother of inventions. By this, I don't mean quantity, I mean importance. Imagine how possible oceanic travel would be without a Compass, or a world without paper or printing. Go read up Chinese inventions, they invented a great deal of things. Western education has succeeded in convincing a lot of people that only Europeans invented things that shaped human civilization. |

selemempe: the importance of suit and tie in this discussion is because of how this man was dressed....as a tribute to some 'cultural heritage'. I denounced that cultural heritage nonsense by pointing to how the ever proud East Asians left many of their cultural heritage behind (including their dress) in favour of western/global styles. Of cause simply dressing in suit and tie is not all that is needed to develop...but it shows a willingness to shift from old ideas to more modern ideas.
Of course Africans are in awe of whites and would seldom want to disturb their fun. But I can assure you again that a fellow white would call the police too if this guy was white. And since both the shop owner and this guy are black...it's perfectly ok. And you may also be surprised that this black shop owner would have still called the police even if this guy was white. Because the shop owner already formed his ideas about what an appropriate dress code looks like The discussion itself is heavily nuanced, and I only called you out because you were inferring that China became successful because they started wearing suit and tie, but we can both agree that patriotism and competence trumps any sort of dress code when it pertains to National growth, and for the second part, at least you agree that inferiority complex played a role there. Inferiority complex is never ok, and that's my opinion. |

selemempe: they embraced 80% of western ideas. In fact the only part of their culture they kept was language and religion. Even those have been influenced by west. Below is a street in Tokyo. See many English signages? See how 'western' the people in the photo are dressed?
And for Japan, it was a deliberate strategy. Read about the Meji era. The emperor forced Japanese citizens to adopt western dressing deliberately. The westernization made Japan the sole non-white global power. Giving them the advantages to colonize China and Korea.
As for a white men getting red carpet treatment...who told you that? Maybe from an African...but his fellow white would have called the police on him It's not Meji. It's Meiji. Emperor Meiji (The Meiji Restoration in the 18th Century) You are making my point. Lol. China's rise to greatness is way beyond wearing suits and trousers. Don't we wear suits and trousers here? China rose to greatness because of two things. Patriotism and competence. They quashed corruption, devalued the Yuan, and maximized their large population which made them an export hub, buy their products, and steal European and American technology. It has zero to do with some useless suit and tie. On the red carpet thing, at least you agree an African will do that, and that was the premise of this discussion in the first place. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Man Ordered To Leave Mall In South Africa For Wearing 'Indecent' African Attire by hermesprogidy(m): 12:37pm On Mar 27, 2021 |
selemempe: Africa has also been a mother of inventions long before China. Egypt and Sudan are the birth places of civilization. Today's China however owes its new found success to Western ideas. And they have gone deeper and deeper to westernise and modernize their society. Africa should do the same and leave the old ways. If you want to badly hold on to the old ways in the name of culture, you would create a very unappealing society That's a very simplistic way of looking at things. China's new found success is not based entirely on embracing western culture. Like the Japanese, they only embraced western education, specifically science and technology, but left significant parts of their cultures intact. While I agree that not all aspects of our culture is beneficial and should be done away with, it is our blatant hypocrisy and inferiority complex that irks me. If it was a White man dressed in this attire that silly shop owner would have thrown out a red carpet. |

selemempe: Fool! China's system of government came from the Soviet Union. I knew you know nothing chai And I was arguing with you. Japan is a parliamentary democracy based on the Westminster style. Awolowo free education may have been responsible for your poor knowledge of these issues but I will forgive it.
Can you tell me what china has invented?? Mobile phones and internet came from US. Planes and automobiles came from Europe. Having an army, navy and air force are western ideas. Dressing in suite are western ideas.
You talk of language. Pray tell who doesn't speak their mother tongue in Africa? Swahili is the national language in Kenya. There is a language spoken by most Ghanaians. Nigeria is the only African country without a native national language. Language is not an issue at all. And has nothing to do with westernisation. Religion is also not a factor in westernisation.
The main factors of westernisation is dressing well... western style education .... understanding and using modern technology and knowing an international language. Leaving backward culture behind China is the mother of inventions. She invented writing, paper, fireworks, and loads of other things you take for granted, including numbers and mathematics. (Alongside India) Westernization goes beyond dressing. It includes Religion, language and general culture. |
