The awards by World Press Photo Foundation recognised photographers for the best pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism, covering the COVID-19 pandemic, the Israel-Palestine conflict and the Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd in the United States. Joumana El Zein Khoury, executive director of the World Press Photo Foundation, said 2020 was a “difficult year” for journalism, adding that the awards honoured “the visual storytellers that put their lives at risk to present us with important stories about our world”. We take a look at a selection of this year’s celebrated images: Source : https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2021/4/15/world-press-photo-winners

Science/Technology / Yuri Gagarin: 60 Years Since First Man Blasted Into Space by Hermzou: 11:25am On Apr 12, 2021 |
Russia on Monday celebrated the 60th anniversary of the legendary flight that made Yuri Gagarin the first man in space, a major source of national pride for millions of his countrymen. Gagarin’s mission on April 12, 1961, marked a historic achievement for the Soviet Union, which beat the United States in a tight race to launch the first human into space. The flight was limited to a single orbit because of questions about weightlessness, Gagarin was supposed to parachute out of the capsule on return because a soft-landing system was not ready yet. In a letter to his wife, Valentina, Gagarin asked her to raise their daughters “not as little princesses, but as real people”, and to feel free to remarry if his mission proved fatal. “Poyekhali!” (Off we go!), the cosmonaut shouted as he took off at 9:07am Moscow time on April 12, 1961. The 27-year-old cosmonaut’s mission was fraught with drama: a break in data transmission, glitches involving antennae, a retrograde rocket, and the separation of modules. But the flight went off safely, and Gagarin became a poster boy for the communist world and is still a national idol 53 years after his death in a jet training accident. Gagarin bailed out as planned and parachuted onto a field near the Volga River about 720km (450 miles) southeast of Moscow. On April 14, the cosmonaut was flown to Moscow, where he was greeted by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and driven into town on a highway lined with cheering Russians. He died on March 27, 1968, after the MiG-15 jet fighter he was flying crashed near the town of Novosyolovo.

Religion / In Pictures: Millions Mark Easter Under COVID-19 Restrictions by Hermzou: 6:06pm On Apr 05, 2021 |
Millions of Christians around the world celebrated a second Easter under coronavirus restrictions on Sunday, as nations tried to control worrying COVID-19 surges. Despite vaccine rollouts gathering pace in many countries, dramatic spikes in cases have forced the reimposition of restrictions. Pope Francis celebrated Easter morning mass at St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican under a strict lockdown over the weekend. Before his mass, he delivered a message of hope and renewal. “It is always possible to begin anew because there is a new life that God can awaken in us in spite of all our failures,” Francis said during Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday. “From the rubble of our hearts, God can create a work of art; from the ruined remnants of our humanity, God can prepare a new history.” Tighter curbs have come into effect in Belgium as well as in France, where authorities are scrambling to deal with a serious spike in cases that has overwhelmed hospitals in Paris. Across the Atlantic, Canada crossed the threshold of one million coronavirus cases as it battled a new wave of infections, forcing several provinces to tighten restrictions before the Easter weekend. And celebrations have been dampened in South America too, where Brazil is in the grip of a devastating outbreak likely fuelled by a more contagious variant. Celebrities / Davido Blames Fans For Sour Relationship With Wizkid, by Hermzou: 1:26pm On Mar 31, 2021 |
- Top Nigerian music star, Davido, recently touched on a number of issues on the Ionwannatalk Podcast - The singer spoke about his relationship with Wizkid and how fans used the beef they caused for their own entertainment - The DMW boss also preached against the use of substance after recognising that it was a predominant issue that needed to be addressed. Nigerian superstar, Davido, is known for a number of things apart from his music. Many times, he is discussed on social media for the love he shows his crew, his generosity and most prominent of all, his relationship with another top singer, Wizkid . According to Davido, if he and Wizkid were to sit down and discuss their issues, it would be discovered that they did not have more than two or three problems with each other. The Risky crooner also recognised that fans played a big role in their supposed beef and that they were using their lives for their own entertainment. Davido explained further by saying that the beef was now no longer about the artistes but the fans, seeing as they formed their own different cliques. Also during the interview, Davido was asked to share his thoughts on if a song of him and Wizkid will be a massive hit. The singer said that he and Wizkid used to be good friends and it was surprising that they had never done a song together in 10 years. He attributed that to them not being in the same place mentally. According to Davido, there are some people who feel his issues with Wizkid made them bigger while others feel coming together will make them bigger. The Risky crooner also spoke on the roles crew members play in fuelling beef between artistes. According to him, an artiste could have been upset at one point and said a lot of things about another artiste. He however added that he was not the kind of man who was scared to tell his crew members that he doesn’t feel the same way anymore after having beef with someone. According to him, crew members could want to push an artiste to take drastic steps but he tells his own boys that the consequences will bear his name and not theirs. Davido then touched on the high rate of substance use in the country and advised people to desist from it. According to him, it was better if they took their alcohol or weed at most but not graduate to other heavier substances. The singer said he felt people used substances to avoid their problems but he is the kind of man to face his squarely. Watch the singer talk about his sour relationship with Wizkid as well as substance use from the 50-57 minute mark below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U... Just recently, Legit.ng reported that Davido spoke on snagging a role in another Hollywood movie after Coming 2 America. The singer said the new role was in an upcoming movie done by the makers of the award-winning 2006 film, Blood Diamond. He revealed that he played the role of a taxi driver. Politics / There’s No Pure-breed Igbo, Hausa Or Yoruba; Only Pure-breed Nigerians by Hermzou: 5:29pm On Mar 30, 2021 |
I strongly believe that even if by some stroke of kismet, a referendum is held on the niggling question of Nigeria’s rupturing today, most Nigerians will vote to remain in this comely country. A majority of Nigerians only desire better a nation, not a divided one. The paroxysms of secessionist agitations here and there are only by the vocal minority — the vociferous and insidious minority. What these progenies of anarchy do is to coagulate citizens’ frustration and deploy it for turmoil, anxiety and inter-ethnic collisions. But the silent majority love their country; though they may be dissatisfied with the way things are, they will not give it up for a mess of pottage or a million Sunday Igbohos and Nnamdi Kanus. And by the way, some of the staunchest agitators for secession today will become the most visible marionettes in the servantry of politicians during the 2023 election campaigns. Really, it does not take clairvoyance to know that the Nigeria of the 1960s is not the Nigeria of the 2000s. Nigeria has undergone morphological mutations in its ethnic colouration and demography owing to the bubbling of inter-ethnic marriages. There is a tribe we ignore in our maddening pursuit of offence against one another – the scions of multiethnic marriages. There has been a cross pollination and fecundation of cultures, ethnic origins, and even blood over the decades. There is no such thing as ‘’pure-breed Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa’’. The emulsion and interfusion of ‘’ichors’’ over the years has enriched the bloodline so much that many Nigerians are of a hybridised ancestry. Have we given a thought to these complexities? There are no pure-breed Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, or Fulani anywhere. But there are pure-breed Nigerians – energised by the living fluid of the great ancestors of Nigeria from across a rich blend of cultures. If we begin to trace our genealogy we will certainly see the inter-crossing of ancestries. Some of those in the vanguard of secessionist agitations today will be staggered to find out that their ancestors are Fulani or that there is a tincture of Fulani blood in their gene-pool. Hate is ossified by ignorance. The knowledge that we are all connected in an endless loop by the commingling of destines should guide our relationship with one another. Reinforcing stereotypes about certain groups could be self-deprecating. As a matter of necessity, we should take interest in digging into our genealogy like African-Americans do. We will be flustered by the findings. Emeka from Enugu will be startled to know that his ancestors are from Kano. Perhaps, that can help in bringing humanity to some unyielding hearts. Again, there are no pure-breed Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba or Fulani. We are all hybridised creatures, but in Nigeria we are made pure by alchemy and monolithic influence. We are a hybrid population. We share the same umbilical cord; nurtured and nourished by the opulence of our intricate ancestry Kogi is a veritable example of how hybridised our country is. In the state, you will find citizens of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and Fulani origins – as well as many other origins. The state is a melting pot of cultures and ethnic linkages. God forbid it, if Nigeria is sundered today, under where do we group this composite population? In Ebonyi (south-east), a good mix of the indigenes are of northern ancestry just like in Enugu. We have a melange of hybridised communities in Ilorin, Kwara; the same in Port Harcourt, Delta, Edo, Oyo and other parts of Nigeria. There are only pure-breed Nigerians. Also, the offspring from multiethnic marriages are a new tribe; the silent majority who listen and watch in horror as we go for each other’s jugulars. We ignore this category of Nigerians who form a formidable number of our population. Have we considered the trauma dealt on the psyche of children whose dads, for example, are from Abia and moms from Kano when we engage in this revelry of hate-trading? The new tribe only knows Nigeria. For them, Nigeria is home — east, west, south or north. They are a new generation of Nigerians who are blind to ethnic complexions and deaf to stereotypes, hate-trading and religious bigotry. They cannot distinguish between the Igbo, the Yoruba, the Hausa or the Fulani; they only recognise one ethnic identity – Nigerian. We ignore this tribe. They are watching. Those of us who share a strong passion for Nigeria must not take a day off in advancing the cause for our unity because those who are desperate at putting the sword to what holds us together are not reclining. Indians are celebrating Holi, the festival of colours, despite many states restricting gatherings to contain a coronavirus resurgence across the country. Holi marks the advent of spring and is widely celebrated throughout Hindu-majority India. Most years, millions of people throw coloured powder and spray water at each other in outdoor celebrations. But for the second consecutive year, people were encouraged to stay home to avoid turning the festivities into superspreader events amid the latest virus surge. Politics / APC Working To Rule For 32 Years – Buni by Hermzou: 5:32pm On Mar 24, 2021 |
Reacting, the PDP said the APC will be voted out in 2023 Governor of Yobe State and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) caretaker committee, Mai Mala Buni, yesterday said the party is working to govern the country for 32 years. Recall that in 2008, the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, said the platform would rule for 60 years. The party was defeated seven years after. Inaugurating the APC Strategy/Contact Committee on Tuesday, in Abuja, Buni said the review of the party’s constitution would take care of ambiguous positions and loopholes that have caused confusion and controversies over the years. The governor said, “The constitution of the Strategy and Contact committee therefore, is to consolidate the achievements we are making in building a strong party with a solid structure that would accomplish APC to stand the test of time.” “Our vision is to provide a wheel that will drive the party to go beyond 6th, 7th and even 8th term of office to effectively implement the party manifesto, improve the lives of Nigerians and, to remain Nigeria’s leading political party.” Speaking after the inauguration, the Jigawa State governor and chairman of the Strategy and Contact Committee, Badaru Abubakar, has said the party’s national convention would hold in June this year. There are speculations in some quarters that the tenure of the Buni-led committee would be extended, while the convention would be shifted beyond June. But Badaru said the caretaker committee was committed to delivering on its mandate, not later than June. The spokesperson of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Nigerians had already reached a national consensus to kick APC out of office, come 2023. “ Nigerians are already set to deal the APC a death blow at the polls in 2023, as they have since reached a definite conclusion that there is no way our nation can survive if the APC is allowed to remain in power beyond 2023,” he said. Religion / Tens Of Thousands Of India’s Hindus Take A Holy Dip by Hermzou: 8:58am On Mar 12, 2021 |
Naked, dreadlocked holy men, known as Naga Sadhus, were among tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims who have thronged the banks of India’s Ganges river, ignoring any coronavirus threat, for one of the nation’s most famous and colourful religious festivals. Authorities in Haridwar expect 2.5 million people for the Maha Shivratri festival, one of the three auspicious bathing days over the next month as part of a major gathering called the Kumbh Mela (Pitcher Festival). Before dawn on Thursday, men, women and children jostled for space along the several kilometres of riverbank before a brief plunge in the fast-flowing water, singing hymns and showering flowers into the Ganges. The highlight later was set to be a jubilant procession by groups of hundreds of Naga Sadhus – their bodies smeared in ash – before their dip in the holy town in the Himalayan foothills.
