Foreign Affairs / Saudi King Salman Admitted To Hospital For Medical Exam by Hermzou: 11:14am On May 08, 2022 |
Eighty-six year-old monarch was taken to a hospital for unspecified tests in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, state media report. Saudi Arabia’s aging king has been admitted to hospital in the Red Sea city of Jeddah to undergo medical tests weeks after he had the battery of his pacemaker changed. A report in the official Saudi Press Agency on Sunday did not provide further details about King Salman’s condition nor the nature of the examinations. It said the king, 86, was admitted to King Faisal Specialist Hospital. “May God preserve the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and may he enjoy health and wellness,” a royal palace statement was quoted as saying. Earlier this year, state media reported King Salman was hospitalised in the capital Riyadh to have the battery of his heart pacemaker replaced. In 2020, he had surgery to remove his gallbladder after a stint in the hospital that revived speculation about the state of his health. Saudi Arabia has generally sought to quell speculation over the health of its king, who has ruled the Arab world’s biggest economy since 2015. Upon his ascension to the throne, King Salman appointed his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 36, as his successor . However, he has also already empowered Prince Mohammed to lead day-to-day affairs of the kingdom. Since his elevation to power, Prince Mohammed, also known as MBS, has upended Saudi Arabia with dizzying social reforms, sidelined royal rivals, and cracked down on perceived opponents. Under his rule, the Gulf powerhouse has launched ambitious economic reforms for a post-oil era and given more rights to women, while adopting a more assertive foreign policy – including entering a war in neighbouring Yemen. Romance / I Am 70-year-old But I Have Never Slept With Any Man In My Life [pics] by Hermzou: 11:07pm On Apr 29, 2022 |
During an interview with Afrimax TV, a woman who identified herself as Kamaliza Verena explained how she has spent 70 years of her life without having intimacy with any man. The 70-year-old woman told Afrimax TV that life seems quite unfair to her because she has always been a loving, caring and faithful person. She said she has waited for so long but she can’t seem to find a man for herself. She said she has been waiting for her own man since she turned 20 years old. She has waited for more than 50 years and sometimes, she feels like it is too late for her to find a man. Kamaliza stated that she is living a sad and tough existence as a result of her inability to find a mate, have children, and have a full family. She noted that she is already feeling the effects of aging, since she frequently becomes ill. She indicated that her height may be a factor in her inability to find a spouse. She stated that she used to take offense when others made comments about her height, but as she matured, she realized that what mattered are one's attitude and personality, not one's height or beauty. She stated that she wishes to know what it's like to awaken in the chest of someone she cares about. However, she stated that her odds of it happening are dwindling as she ages... In the end, I'm a virgin. My relationship with my mother ended when I was in my early twenties. I never had a child of my own. And I never miscarried or aborted a single one of my children. Maliza admitted, "I've never slept with a man before, so I don't know how it feels." According to her, there is something about her that makes guys shy away from her. On a mission to discover what it actually is, she hopes that when she does she will be able to meet someone. As Kamaliza has stated, she is waiting for the right person to come along and commit to her for the rest of her life. A miracle can yet happen to her, despite the fact that it appears like it's too late. She expressed her continued optimism that her partner will come to her one day and that they will be able to have an intimate relationship together. She stated that it is not over until God declares it to be so. Source : https://opera.news/za/en/entertainment/b8ff9536885a48018a08a4144ea99ab7 Lalasticlala Myndd44 1 Like

Foreign Affairs / Trump Finally Posts On Truth Social: "I'M BACK!" by Hermzou: 3:58pm On Apr 29, 2022 |
(Reuters) - Former U.S. president Donald
Trump posted a brief message on Truth
Social late Thursday for the first time
since the app he founded launched two
months ago, saying "I'M BACK!"
Trump broke his silence as Elon Musk
sealed a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter,
which last year permanently banned
Trump citing a risk of further violence
following the Jan. 6, 2021 siege by a pro-
Trump mob on the U.S. Capitol.
Republicans cheered Musk's buyout of the
social media platform in the hope that the
Tesla Inc Chief Executive, who has vowed
to relax content moderation practices to
restore free speech, will invite Trump
back to the site.
Since the deal was announced this week,
Trump has said he would not return to
Twitter.
In Thursday's message, called a "truth" on
the app, Trump wrote, "I'M BACK!
#COVFEFE", referencing a typo on a
Twitter message he sent while president
that complained about the press and was
widely memed.
Trump's silence on his own app since the
launch of Truth Social on Apple Inc's app
store on Feb. 21 has raised questions
about its long term viability.
Ahead of its launch, his son Donald
Trump Jr. tweeted a screenshot of his
father’s Truth Social account with one
“truth” that he posted on Feb. 14, verified
at the account of @reaDonaldTrump, with
the message: “Get Ready! Your favorite
President will see you soon!”
Trump Media & Technology Group
(TMTG), Truth Social's parent company, is
planning to go public through a merger
with blank-check firm Digital World
Acquisition Corp, shares of which were up
7.7% pre-market Friday.
The deal is under scrutiny by the U.S.
Securities and Exchange Commission and
is likely months away from being
finalized. Source: https://news.yahoo.com/trump-finally-posts-truth-social-125746023.html Lalasticlala Myndd44

Crime / Soldier Assisting Boko Haram Commits Suicide After Naming Other Collaborators by Hermzou: 11:41am On Apr 28, 2022 |
A Nigerian Army personnel arrested for aiding Boko Haram/Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) is dead. It is still unclear if he was working for either of the terrorist organizations or both. The member of the Armed Forces committed suicide while being escorted to the barracks on Tuesday. His cover was blown by military intelligence which exposed his involvement in the massacre at brothels and beer parlours in Yobe State. Identified as Lance Corporal Jibrin, he was involved in the attacks in Geidam and Gashua towns. More than a dozen civilians were killed. “He was apprehended while attempting to escape after he learnt that his movements and activities with terrorists have been discovered. “After being handcuffed, he skillfully snatched a gun from one of the escorts and killed himself. “Investigation is ongoing to nab other suspects within the service”, a source told PRNigeria. Jibrin, an instructor with his Army Battalion in Geidam, was initially not seen for days, DAILY POST gathered Wednesday night. He was later sighted among the Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters that invaded the Yobe communities. A team, including the Battalion Commander Officer, tracked his phone and found that Jibrin was at Gashua, many kilometers from his duty post. On Tuesday, the soldier boarded a bus to Gombe State, in disguise, but was intercepted at a checkpoint in Gashua. Jibrin, who implicated some other military personnel, made revelations about Boko Haram, ISWAP, the insurgents, his participation, etc. While in transit to Geidam, he disarmed one of his escorts, overpowered another and shot himself dead. Foreign Affairs / Trump Says He's Not Rejoining Twitter, Musk-owned Or Not by Hermzou: 11:26am On Apr 26, 2022 |
Former President Donald Trump said Monday he would have no interest in rejoining Twitter even if his account were reinstated by Elon Musk, insisting that he plans instead to stick with his fledgling social media network, Truth Social. “I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump told Fox News in a statement that was issued shortly before Musk’s $44 billion buyout offer for Twitter was accepted unanimously by the company’s board. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH,” Trump’s statement read. Musk, the outspoken billionaire chief executive of Tesla, has said he plans to take Twitter private and minimize the policing of its content. Trump was permanently suspended by Twitter , as well as by Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, for what the companies described as his role in inciting violence during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. His Twitter account, which had more than 88 million followers, was initially suspended for 12 hours during the riot after he condemned then-Vice President Mike Pence, who was in the process of certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them, we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” Twitter said in a tweet announcing the permanent ban. After leaving office, Trump announced plans to create his own social media platform, Truth Social , which saw a turbulent launch last month. Trump himself is not yet on the platform, which has struggled to attract users. The former president told Fox that he will formally join “over the next seven days, as planned.” As a candidate, Trump used Twitter as a cudgel to help propel him to the presidency. Shortly after his victory in the 2016 presidential election, he said he wasn’t sure how much he’d use Twitter once he got to the White House. “I’m going to be very restrained, if I use it at all,” Trump told the CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” days after the 2016 election. But his use of Twitter only seemed to intensify while in office, with Trump using the social media platform to spar with critics, float conspiracies and provoke foreign adversaries. Celebrities / Rihanna And A$AP Are Reportedly Together And Fine Amid False Rumors of Break Up by Hermzou: 5:17pm On Apr 16, 2022 |
Hours after gossip spread on Twitter that A$AP Rocky cheated on his pregnant girlfriend Rihanna with shoe designer Amina Muaddi during last month's Paris Fashion Week, TMZ got clarification from a source directly connected to Rocky and Rihanna on the rumor's validity. It's absolutely not true, the source said. The source said, “100% false on both counts,” adding again that it's “1 million percent not true. They're fine.” Mauddi, who has designed shoes for Rihanna’s brand, Fenty, debunked the report on her Instagram page on Friday night. Neither Rihanna nor Rocky have publicly commented on the rumor yet. Rihanna is in the third trimester of her pregnancy with their first child. The breakup gossip trended on Twitter for hours yesterday. Some users were skeptical about the statement being true. Others were shocked and outraged over the alleged infidelity. And of course there were memes, involving Rihanna's ex Drake, because it's Twitter. Rihanna opened up in detail about her relationship with Rocky earlier this week in her newly-released Vogue interview. Rocky was a longtime friend before he was her partner. “People don’t get out of the friend zone very easily with me,” she started. “And I certainly took a while to get over how much I know him and how much he knows me, because we also know how much trouble we can land each other in.” With Rocky as her partner, “I love the simple things but also the grand adventures,” she said. “There’s no pretentious my-brand-your-brand bullshit, it’s just us living. I just feel like I can do any part of life by his side.” “What I love the most about us?” Rihanna added. “Transparency with everything: how we’re feeling, what our goals are, what our fears and insecurities are. The vulnerability to be able to say what you feel about each other.” Source: https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/a39735274/rihanna-asap-rocky-cheating-rumors-explained/ Lalasticlala Myndd44

Celebrities / Kim Kardashian In Tears: Calls Kanye As Son Reportedly Sees Her Second Sex Tape by Hermzou: 6:36pm On Apr 14, 2022 |
The reality star shot to fame after the sex tape that shows her having sexual intercourse with her then-boyfriend, Ray J, was leaked. Though Kim has been able to turn the scandal around to build a fortune out of it, it's all not over for her yet. Reports have gone rife that a second part of the sex tape is in the air. This emanates from a new scene from Kim's new reality show. TMZ states that the 6-year-old son of Kimye, Saint, asked his mom about "a pop-up ad he stumbled upon touting alleged unseen footage from her days with Ray J". According to the website, upon Saint's questions about opo-up ad, Kim went into a frenzy. "She freaks out/phones attorneys, demanding they stay on top of it and threatening legal action against those who might leak any would-be unearthed material that may or may not exist, " TMZ reported. “ Kim knows that Ray J made other tapes of them together, ” a New York Post source close to the reality TV star said and added that "some of the footage is extremely personal. ‘Over my dead body, is this happening again,’ she has told lawyers .” Kim tells her attorneys in the teaser of the new reality show that "she's willing to sue over any unreleased footage that might exist/leak, or against anyone who resurfaces her actual sex tape ... and she's pretty emotional," TMZ said added that "she even called Kanye in the scene to vent ". However, this is exactly how their old E! show started with a similar scene, therefore, some Netizens and pop culture followers say this scene is a deja vu, that only features her children now. Foreign Affairs / UK Boris Johnson To Be Fined For Breaching His Own Covid-19 Lockdown Rules, by Hermzou: 6:50pm On Apr 12, 2022 |
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and finance minister Rishi Sunak are to be fined for breaching Covid-19 lockdown laws in what has become known as the “Partygate” scandal, prompting calls on Tuesday for their resignation. Johnson’s wife Carrie will also be fined, as the political storm following revelations of a swathe of lockdown-busting parties in and around Downing Street threatens to engulf Johnson once more. “The prime minister and chancellor of the exchequer have today received notification that the Metropolitan Police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said on Tuesday. The announcement came after London’s Metropolitan Police said they had issued more than 50 fines over the parties, without disclosing the number or identities of those being fined. The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Keir Starmer, swiftly called for the two most senior members of the government to resign. “Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public,” Starmer tweeted. “They must both resign. The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern. Britain deserves better.” Johnson was left fighting for his political survival earlier this year after a several lawmakers from his ruling Conservative Party withdrew their support for his leadership over the affair. – A ‘government in crisis’ – An unknown number of Conservative MPs have submitted letters calling for a no- confidence vote in Johnson’s leadership. If the Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee receives such letters from 54 of Johnson’s 360 MPs, it would spark a confidence vote. The leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, called for parliament to be recalled from its Easter recess for a confidence vote. “This is a government in crisis neglecting a country in crisis,” Davey tweeted. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had eased the political pressure on Johnson over the scandal. Conservative MP Roger Gale said on Tuesday that now was not the time to “unseat” the prime minister, as this would bolster President Vladimir Putin. “It’s serious of course,” Gale said. “But… I am not prepared to give Vladimir Putin the comfort of thinking that we are about to unseat the prime minister of the United Kingdom and destabilise the coalition against Putin. “So any reaction to this is going to have to wait until we have dealt with the main crisis which is Ukraine and the Donbas,” he said, referring to the eastern Ukrainian region where Moscow is now concentrating its assault. – Johnson ‘broke the law’ – Bereaved families of victims of the Covid pandemic also called on Johnson to resign. Lobby Akinnola, spokesman for Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, said Johnson and Sunak “broke the law” and “took us all for mugs. “There is simply no way either the prime minister or chancellor can continue… Their dishonesty has caused untold hurt to the bereaved,” he said. “They have lost all credibility with the wider public, which could cost lives if new variants mean restrictions are needed in the future.” London police are still investigating claims that Johnson and government officials organised and attended at least a dozen boozy events in 2020 and 2021 that violated Britain’s then-strict virus curbs. Carrie Johnson’s spokeswoman said that “in the interests of transparency, Mrs Johnson can confirm she has been notified that she will receive a fixed penalty notice. “She has not yet received any further details about the nature of the FPN,” she added. It is not clear for which event or events the trio are being fined, but all three reportedly attended a gathering for Johnson’s birthday in June 2020. Johnson has already apologised for the parties, which included Christmas celebrations and a drink-fuelled gathering the evening before Prince Philip’s funeral. The prime minister initially denied any rule- breaking events had occurred in the complex where he lives and works, and he consistently rejected any suggestion of personal wrongdoing. But his opponents accused him of having misled parliament by insisting the Downing Street events were work-related and within the rules. Foreign Affairs / Pakistan: Shehbaz Sharif Elected As New Prime Minister by Hermzou: 5:44pm On Apr 11, 2022 |
Previous Trend: https://www.nairaland.com/7070967/pakistan-imran-khan-removed-prime Sharif elected prime minister by parliament following the removal of Imran Khan in a no-confidence vote. Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan’s parliament has elected Shehbaz Sharif as the country’s new prime minister following the weekend removal of Imran Khan in a vote of no confidence. Ahead of the vote on Monday, MPs from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf (PTI) party resigned en masse, boycotting the election of Sharif, the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. “Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as prime minister,” said Acting Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. In his first address as prime minister in the National Assembly, Sharif announced an increase in salaries, pensions and the minimum wage for labourers. Sharif discussed the foreign-policy failures of the outgoing government and said he will expedite the multibillion-dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project and rebuild broken ties with partners and allies. “We want good relations with India but there cannot be sustainable peace unless the issue of Kashmir is resolved,” he said. Sharif invited his Indian counterpart to help solve the Kashmir dispute in line with United Nations resolutions. The prime minister did not miss the opportunity to deal with the allegations levelled by Khan that the United States conspired with his opponents to topple his government. Sharif ordered an in-camera briefing of the parliamentary committee on national security. Senior civil and military officials, including Pakistan’s foreign ambassador in Washington, will also attend the meeting. “I will step down and if there is an iota of evidence [against me],” he said. Earlier, Sharif secured 174 votes and will now form a new government that can remain in place until August 2023, when general elections are due. No prime minister has ever completed a five-year term in office during the country’s nearly 75-year history. The parliamentary vote was held under tight security, with nearly all roads leading to the National Assembly sealed. Religion / Saudi Arabia Sets Limit Of 1m Hajj Pilgrims This Year by Hermzou: 5:32pm On Apr 09, 2022 |
Saudi Arabia says Muslims from inside and outside the country will be able to perform the Hajj providing they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and no older than 65. Saudi Arabia has said it will allow one million people – from both inside and outside the kingdom – to perform the Hajj this year compared with only a few thousand local pilgrims over the past two years. In increasing the numbers, the kingdom’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, would only be allowed for people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and are under the age of 65. “It is of supreme importance to the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to preserve the safety and security of Hajj pilgrims as well as visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque while ensuring that the maximum number of Muslims worldwide can perform Hajj and visit the Prophet’s Mosque in a safe and spiritual atmosphere,” the ministry said in a statement early on Saturday. Pilgrims travelling from abroad will also need to have a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before their departure for Saudi Arabia, the statement said, while health precautions will be in place in Mecca to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and a once-in-a-lifetime duty for all able-bodied Muslims to perform if they can afford it. It is expected to take place in July this year with the numbers allowed from each country decided under a quota system. Just a few thousand people were allowed to perform the pilgrimage in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and only 1,000 the year before that. Before the virus emerged, some 2.5 million people would travel every year to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. Nairaland / General / Aljazeera: Why Are African Governments Blocking Phone Lines Of Citizens ? by Hermzou: 5:46pm On Apr 08, 2022 |
Across Africa, there is a lengthening line of governments embarking on a mass disconnection drive of phone lines for, among other things, domestic security. Lagos, Nigeria – This Monday, millions of Nigerians woke up to find that they had been barred from making phone calls. The number of disconnected lines is reported to be as many as 75 million, more than a third of the total 198 million lines nationwide. But the move has been a long time coming. In December 2020, Abuja issued a directive for all SIM card carriers to link their lines to a unique National Identity Number, citing a need to tackle the plaguing insecurity in the country. That deadline was postponed numerous times but last week’s attack on a train by armed groups was a wake-up call. When reports started surfacing online that the attackers had started calling families of abducted passengers for ransom, the government swung into action, fulfilling its almost two-year-old promise to cut off non-compliant citizens. On social networks, many – especially southerners – are debating the connection between SIM card linkage with the national identity number and the actions of these groups, known locally as bandits, whose axes of focus are swaths of the northwest and central Nigeria. In 2015, the Nigerian government fined MTN, one of the continent’s biggest telecom players, $5.2bn for defaulting in cutting off unverified customers. The National Communications Commission (NCC) had previously instructed the telecom giant to deactivate between 10 and 18.6 million lines. But government swung into action after the high-profile kidnap of a former Nigerian finance minister; police say the kidnappers used MTN lines to contact his family members. Across the continent, there is a lengthening line of governments embarking on a mass disconnection drive citing, among other things, domestic security. In March, Zambia announced it had deactivated two million SIMs cards to stem the volume of fraud carried out using mobile lines. Kenyan media have also reported an April 15 deadline by authorities in the East African country for the deactivation of unregistered SIM cards – the third such deadline in the past 10 years. In 2013, it switched off more than two million SIM cards after an attack by the armed group al-Shabab . Last year, Tanzania said it had blocked 18,000 SIM cards involved in criminal activities. In a bid to also curtail mobile scams, Ghana issued a directive for every SIM card carrier to re-register their SIMs with the Ghana Card, the national residency card, or lose them. In faraway Hong Kong, a proposal from last year to impose new restrictions on phone line registrations was approved this March. What are the issues? With Africa having a 44 percent mobile penetration rate, SIM cards are one of the most ubiquitous technologies around. At least 50 of Africa’s 54 countries have mandatory SIM registration laws in place, but most have barely been enforced – until now. Registration usually involves the submission of personal data and the capture of citizen biometrics. The rationale is that this registration will help create a vast database to help track criminal activity. Officials say SIMs, accessible even on the streets for sometimes as low as $1, are frequently bought and discarded by suspected criminals, without any – or not enough – details of their personal identity to trace and monitor them. “Since 9/11, in many countries, if you want to get a SIM card, you have to show some [form of] identification,” Rebecca Enonchong, Cameroonian tech entrepreneur and founder of AppsTech told Al Jazeera. “It is rather normal that the government should require those who are using cell services [to] register with the operators and the telecommunication companies should know who is connected to their services.” On the surface, this sounds like a quick and cheap solution for many governments in a continent where most countries have no unified operational national database. But multiple SIM ownership is prevalent across Africa for many reasons including varying data prices, connectivity speeds and signal strength. In 2018, four African countries were among the top 10 globally, with dual or multi-SIM mobile phones. Kenya even once had plans to institute an ownership cap of 10 SIM cards per person. Telecom operators also often tailor registration processes in order to sell more prepaid SIM cards. Experts say the outcome is that the data gleaned from SIM registrations are not as accurate or neat as they ought to be. “The ID systems [in Africa] are not really backed by technology, there are no linkages, so there is no verification process,” Enonchong said. “If the telecommunication companies themselves don’t enforce that, it is really very hard for the government to make use of the data.” How did we get here? At the root of it all is a mass unwillingness to register SIM cards due to a seeming lack of distrust by residents to hand over their details to the government. Unsurprisingly, there are concerns about data privacy and the inestimable capacity of government to use data collected for one purpose for another, given the historical intolerance for dissent in some of these countries. There is also a legal void around government handling of data. A 2021 report by Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), claimed that only half of African countries have adopted laws to protect personal data. Repeated registration exercises have also weakened the will of the people, experts say. Over the years, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and its economic powerhouse, has instituted multiple mandatory identity registration schemes, including Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identity Number (NIN), alongside more widespread IDs like voters’ cards, international passports and others. Yet, the government is insisting that the way forward is for every SIM card to be linked with an NIN, a policy that many Nigerians say will be just as cumbersome and bureaucratic as its predecessors – and possibly end up achieving nothing too. “This is a trend of policy laziness,” Gbenga Sesan, head of Lagos-based digital rights advocacy nonprofit Paradigm Initiative, told Al Jazeera. “The problem does not lie with the lack of a central database; it is about impunity. If I know that if I commit a crime and I know I would be punished for it, then I will likely think about it twice.” In Kenya, citizens are also complaining about the redundancy of multiple registrations. The new registration warrants the submission of the phone number, copy of passport or visa and biodata page, exit stamps and scanned ID – items they claim to have submitted during the last exercise in 2018. The bigger fear, however, is of government surveillance under the guise of national security, leading to a widespread reluctance to willingly submit personal data which can be used to monitor their everyday activities. “The issue of data privacy transcends Africa,” Ken Ashigbey, the CEO of Ghana Telecommunications Chamber, noted. “The concern about Big Brother sitting somewhere and using your data to spy on you is always going to be there, [and] when you bring it into the examples of Africa where our governments all seem to have total power, definitely there are risks,” he said. The risks also extend to small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in a digital era where SIMs and the world of possibilities on the internet are helping empower many in the absence of social welfare schemes. Already, SMEs account for 84 percent of employment and make up 96 percent of businesses in Nigeria. Shutting millions of people out of seamless communication could adversely affect the economy, Sesan warned. “What we are going to lose is roughly one-third or about 35 percent of connected lines that we have [and] there will be major economic consequences [but] there will be no gain in terms of security,” he said. Foreign Affairs / Russia Declares 1st Phase Of Ukraine War Complete, Reveals Death Toll by Hermzou: 12:53pm On Mar 26, 2022 |
More than 1,000 Russian soldiers have died during the military operation in Ukraine, Moscow announced Friday, adding that 93% of the territory of Luhansk province has been "liberated" by the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), while Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) has taken control over 54% in Donetsk province. Russian news agencies quoted the defense ministry as saying that some 1,351 soldiers have been killed since the end of February, "Unfortunately, during the special military operation there are losses among our comrades. To date, 1,351 servicemen have died and 3,825 have been injured," it said in a statement. The ministry earlier said that the main targets of the first phase of Russia's "special operation" in Ukraine had been completed. However, according to Ukraine's information, they claim around 15,600 Russian troops were killed in just one month of fighting – almost 15 times the number that Russia declared Friday. The ministry asserted that there are many requests from Russians who want to take part in the operation in Ukraine. More than 23,000 foreigners from 37 countries expressed their readiness to fight on the side of the eastern republics. "We offered the leadership of the LNR and DNR to accept this assistance, but they said that they would defend their land themselves," the ministry said. The ministry said Russia would continue with its operation until it achieved the targets set by President Vladimir Putin, RIA reported. The ministry added that it did not rule out storming Ukrainian cities that had been blockaded and that Russia would react immediately to any attempt to close the airspace over Ukraine – something Kyiv has asked NATO to do, but NATO has resisted. Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24 in its "special operation" to weaken its southern neighbor's military capabilities and root out people it called "dangerous nationalists." Ukrainian forces have mounted stiff resistance to the invasion and the West has imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in an effort to force it to withdraw its forces. Russia's military had considered two options for its operation in Ukraine, one confined to the Donbass and the other on the whole territory of Ukraine, the defense ministry said. Foreign Affairs / US Lawmaker Toppled By Nigerian Billionaire Cash by Hermzou: 12:35pm On Mar 26, 2022 |
A US lawmaker could face expulsion from Congress for lying about funding ties to an African billionaire. Jeff Fortenberry, a Republican from Nebraska, lied to the FBI about taking illegal donations from Gilbert Chagoury, a high-flying Nigerian businessman, a federal jury found. He could be sentenced to 15 years in prison on three felony counts. The case has also renewed attention on the access of foreign influencers on US politics. It is illegal for foreign nationals to make political contributions, but Mr Chagoury, 75, has made several. In 2019, he was fined $1.8m (£1.4m) by the US government, and some recipients of his donations were investigated. In 2016, he illegally donated $30,000 (£22,736) in 2016 to Fortenberry, funnelling the funds to the congressman through donors at a Los Angeles event. A Paris-based industrialist, Mr Chagoury had a high profile. His name adorns a wing of the Louvre Museum, and he was once denied a US visa for alleged ties to Hezbollah militants. He was once a top advisor to Nigerian military ruler Sani Abacha, who was later found to have stolen billions from the country as its head of state in the 1990s. Mr Chagoury also happens to be ambassador to the Vatican for the island nation of St Lucia. Said to be a devout Catholic, he and Fortenberry, 61, have been linked to a Washington-based nonprofit called In Defense of Christians. Officials are yet to explicitly say why he targeted the congressman, but US Justice Department documents claim Mr Chagoury was advised to "contribute to US politicians from less populous states" because the gifts would be "more noticeable". In a recorded phone call, Fortenberry was told that he had likely received $30,000 illegally through associates of Mr Chagoury. But in meetings with FBI agents, Fortenberry denied any knowledge, telling them he would have been "horrified" to hear such a claim. Prosecutors argued he then "repeatedly" concealed the donation in order "to protect his job, his reputation and his close associates". On Thursday, jurors at his trial in Los Angeles deliberated for about two hours before finding him guilty on charges of making false states and concealing facts to federal agents. "If we want anyone to follow the law, ultimately it starts with the lawmakers," Chief prosecutor Mack Jenkins said. "We hold them to a higher standard." He is expected to be sentenced on 28 June, but has said he will appeal the verdict. Although he is not required to do so, Republicans and Democrats in the US House of Representatives have called for him to resign. If he does not, he is almost certain to be expelled, as has been the case for previous Congress members convicted of felonies.
