Nairaland / General / Sudanese Boy Rescued After Eight Hours Trapped In Rubbish Lorry by Hermzou: 12:09am On Feb 16, 2022
A 10-year-old boy has been rescued after spending eight hours in the crushing mechanism of a rubbish lorry in Sudan's capital, Khartoum. The boy, identified by police as Majed Mubarak Ibrahim, was working with a truck run by the Khartoum State Cleaning Corporation. It is believed he was pulled into the lorry as he threw in some rubbish. He is now in hospital, but the police have given no further details about his condition. People shared photos on social media of rescuers at work overnight trying to release the boy. Eyewitnesses said one of the child's palms was visible - trapped in the hydraulic hatch. One clip showed a welder at work, another captured the arm of a digger being used to try to force open the hatch . A crowd of onlookers surrounded the vehicle - some offering advice on how to free the child. Social commentators say the accident sheds light on the issue of child labour in Sudan, where children are often exploited and some recruited as soldiers. The tough economic realities in Sudan have led some children to work in dangerous jobs. There are large numbers of street children in Khartoum and other big cities. According to the UN children's agency (Unicef), around three million Sudanese children are out of school. They work in a variety of jobs such as cleaning, vending, bricklaying and rubbish collection - risking exploitation and abuse. Poor pay and working conditions at the Khartoum State Cleaning Corporation have also been highlighted by some on social media as employees there have been protesting recently. One activist, El-Sadiq Eissa, tweeted about an encounter he had had with an ex-employee of the company whose leg was amputated following a work accident. According to the activist, the man is now begging on the streets of Khartoum after the company refused pay for his medical treatment.

Nairaland / General / Preparation For Death: The Tanzanian Man Who Has Built His Own Grave [pics] by Hermzou: 6:06pm On Feb 15, 2022
A Tanzanian man has shocked his village by
building his own grave in preparation for his
death.
Patrick Kimaro, 59, says his family is slowly
accepting his decision, which is viewed by the
community as a bad omen.
Traditional leaders from Mr Kimaro's ethnic
group in Kilimanjaro region say a grave should
not be dug in anticipation of death and it
should not remain empty for long.
Mr Kimaro, who works as a policeman, told
BBC Swahili that he started building his grave
in January to cushion his family from high
funeral expenses when he dies.
"Being a first-born child, I had a difficult time
burying my parents when they died six
months apart... so I decided I'll not take my
children through the same [experience]," he
told BBC Swahili.
Mr Kimaro plans to set aside some money for
his casket and believes his family will be able
to raise money for other related expenses
after his death.
He is also planning to take insurance for his
grave in the event of natural calamities like
flooding that may destroy it.
The preparation of the grave, including its
exquisite finishing, cost him a total of $3,000
(£2,200).
Mr Kimaro's home security guard says some
neighbours have shied away from visiting
since the grave was dug within the
compound.
Some of his family members have however
got used to the grave and even sit around it
to chat.

Nairaland / General / The Indian Family That Froze To Death A World Away From Home [pics] by Hermzou: 11:22pm On Feb 12, 2022
The night Vaishaliben Patel, her husband
Jagdish and their two children set out for the
US-Canadian border they dressed in new
heavy winter coats and snow boots.
Temperatures where they walked, in
Emerson, Manitoba, had dropped more than
35 degrees below freezing.
The young family had probably never
experienced temperatures that low before.
Even on its coldest day, the Patels' home
village in western India would not have
reached within 10 degrees of freezing.
As they walked - maybe for a couple of hours,
maybe for more - sharp winds carried snow
and shards of ice across the plains, reducing
visibility to nothing.
Canadian police found the four of them -
Vaishaliben, 37, Jagdish, 39, their daughter,
Vihangi, 11 and son, Dharmik, 3 - lying
together, frozen, in an empty field on 19
January. They had died 12 metres from the
US border.
The mysterious case of a young family that
made its way from an unassuming village in
Gujarat, India, to the bitter reaches of
Manitoba, half a world away, has shocked
Canadians and Indians alike, exposing the
intense pressures and economic anxieties
that may have led to tragedy.
Officials have said they believe the family's
deaths to be a case of human smuggling, and
authorities in the US and Canada are still
trying to determine how the Patels reached
Emerson and who may have led them there,
ultimately to their deaths.
The village of Dingucha in western India is
about as far as you can get - in distance and
in feeling - from icy Manitoba.
Some 12,000km away from Emerson, the
town is home to about 3,500 residents,
mostly middle-class agricultural workers and
labourers in the province of Gujarat.
There, the Patels lived in a neat two-storey
home with a rooftop balcony and a large
welcome sign painted over the door. Their
home sits snug among a line of row houses -
concrete buildings painted yellow, pink and
white.
Some residents apparently knew of the Patels'
plans to travel, telling the BBC's Gujarati
service that they went to Canada on visitor's
visas. Relatives grew concerned when
messages from the family stopped coming,
about a week after they had left, they said.
On or about 12 January, the Patel's arrived in
Canada on a flight to Toronto before traveling
2,000km (1,200 miles) west to Manitoba.
Police have not determined how they got to
Emerson - by land or sky - though there is no
record of them boarding a domestic flight.
The drive would have been long - 22 hours on
the Trans-Canada Highway.
They would have snaked along the Canada-US
border, weaving past the frozen lakes of
southern Ontario before reaching the flat
expanse of the prairies, where wind carries
snow through the air like smoke.
The town has one pharmacy, one grocery
store, one school. The houses are modest
single-storey homes with single-car garages
and large yards. Residents call it a retirement
town - a pleasant place to live, with not much
to do.
If the Patels had stayed at one of Emerson's
two borderside motels, they would have
looked straight out at the US - North Dakota to
the right, Minnesota to the left. From here, at
Manitoba's southern edge, it can be hard to
distinguish the white plane of frozen fields
from the snowy sky.
Standing outside in Emerson's winter is
almost unbearable, despite layers of fleece,
down and wool. The air burns the lungs with
every breath even when it is 15 degrees
warmer than the day the Patels attempted to
walk across the border.
The cold feels "like a dog biting your hand and
not letting go", said George Andrawess, who
runs Emerson's lone pharmacy, five minute's
walk from the border.
"Your tears will freeze in your eyes," he said.
Both Jagdish and Vaishaliben were educated,
local media said, at one point working as
teachers. Like many other Gujaratis, the
Patels had a second home nearby, in the
nearest middle-class town, Kalol. Residents
told the BBC's Gujarati service that Jagdish,
the father, had helped his brother in the
garment business.
Their parents were often nearby, also dividing
their time between Kalol and Dingucha.
Yet despite the appearances of a well-
anchored life in India, something compelled
the Patels to leave.
In Dingucha, this is common, residents told
the BBC.
"Every child here grows with the dream of
moving to a foreign country," a Dingucha
councilman said.
Many locals spoke of an intense and
pervasive social pressure to move abroad,
with social status determined by connections
in foreign countries. Those who stay are seen
as incapable of raising the funds to leave,
everyone else moves on, some said.
"There are instances, where boys of marriage
age cannot find a suitable girl, because they
don't have any close relatives in any foreign
country," one person said.
And there were perhaps idealised views of life
abroad. "There are many people earlier as well
who had gone to US without proper
documentation, and many of them are doing
well," said another.
"People think there are dollar trees here," said
Mitesh Trivedi, a Gujarati-Canadian. "I had that
in my mind when I came, I was 26 years old."
Mr Trivedi, now 59, settled in Canada three
decades ago on a marriage visa and became
a citizen in 2000. In many ways, his is the life
that Indian economic migrants aspire to
abroad: He owns a profitable restaurant, has
raised a family, and his two daughters both
hold graduate degrees in the medical field.
Though he was highly educated in India - Mr
Trivedi is an engineer by training - upward
mobility would have been limited there. "I was
born lower-middle class. If I had stayed, I
would have died lower-middle class," he said.
He and other expats in Winnipeg described
clandestine travel networks, plans whispered
between contacts in India, Canada and the US,
that facilitate these crossings, with relatives
or friends who were smuggled successfully
becoming "references" for particular
smugglers.
"It's word of mouth," Mr Trivedi said. "Nothing
on paper."
He has heard of people who have done it, he
said. Crossing on foot or hiding in trunks of
cars "is not new".
These networks can foster safe havens
abroad, with documented Indian migrants
providing a place to stay or off-the-books
employment for the newly arrived.
According to Canada's Immigration and
Refugee Board, the country is experiencing an
influx of irregular migration.
Most of these crossings are northbound - with
migrants trying to cross into Canada from the
US.
Last year, about 4,000 people were found
trying to enter Canada this way, compared to
900 crossing into the US, said Western
University's Professor Victoria Esses, who
studies immigration policy. Before Covid-19
travel restrictions, both numbers would likely
be higher, she said.
Emerson itself, with its wide stretch of
unguarded border, is considered a hotspot for
illegal crossings. US Border Patrol recently
named this area as a high incident spot for
human smuggling.
In 2017, two migrants from Ghana were badly
injured by frostbite, each losing several
fingers, when they tried to make the trek into
Canada from the US . At the time, Emerson
locals told the BBC they were afraid someone
would die trying to make it across.
It's unclear why Canada was not the Patels'
final destination, but Gujaratis in both India
and Canada say residents of Dingucha have a
particular fixation with the US.
Most of those who spoke to the BBC were
familiar with the US immigration process,
rattling off descriptions of different types of
visas and which lead to citizenship.
Or perhaps they simply had family there.
A few days after their deaths, an online
fundraiser for the family's funeral costs was
set up by Dilip Patel, a doctor in Chicago,
though it is uncertain if he was a relative. He
did not respond to requests for comment.
Police on both sides of the border have said
that the Patels' case is probably linked to
human smuggling.
The only named suspect so far is 47-year-old
Steve Shand, a US citizen from Florida,
arrested last month. Mr Shand is suspected of
playing a part in a "larger human smuggling
operation", connected to the deaths of the
Patels, the US Homeland Security department
has said.
On 19 January, the same day the Patels were
found, Mr Shand was arrested in Pembina,
North Dakota, less than 8km from Emerson.
He was driving a 15-seat van with two Indian
nationals as passengers, and cases of food
and water in his boot.
Five additional Indian nationals were found
that day, 400 metres south of the Canadian
border, walking towards the location of Mr
Shand's arrest. They told authorities they had
been walking for more than 11 hours.
The Indian nationals arrived illegally in the US,
authorities said. All seven spoke Gujarati - the
language of the Patels' home state - and all
seven wore newly purchased matching winter
clothing, similar to the Patels'. One man
carried a backpack that did not belong to him,
containing children's clothes, a nappy and
toys.
The group told authorities that a family of four
had been left behind.
One of the Indian nationals caught with Mr
Shand told authorities he paid a "significant"
amount of money to enter Canada under a
falsified student visa. After crossing into the
US on foot, he had expected to be driven to
his uncle's home in Chicago.
But for the Patels, the central questions are
left unanswered: what was waiting for them
across the plains, was it worth the risk, or did
they even know the risk they were taking?
Among the many painful details of the case,
Canadians have been left bewildered as to
why the Patels pushed forward, despite the
frigid and dangerous conditions.
"Who told them to do this?" asked Hemant
Shah, an Indian expat and community leader
in Winnipeg. "Any Gujarati or Indo-Canadian
would have told them not to go. It was minus
35, you cannot survive that."
Perhaps the journey seemed simple - a
straight shot across an invisible, unimpeded
border - but on the night of their crossing, that
path was blurred by snow, and the long
stretch of the prairies would have offered little
in the form of navigation.
They didn't even make it to the border. In
their final moments, they may not have known
where they were at all.

Celebrities / Sadiya Haruna Bags Six-Month Jail Sentence In Kano For Defaming Isa A (Photos) by Hermzou: 2:29pm On Feb 09, 2022
Previous Trend: https://www.nairaland.com/6714898/hisbah-arrest-instagram-nudist-sadiya

A Kano Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, on Monday sentenced a Kannywood actress, Sadiya Haruna, to six months in prison without the option of a fine for defaming a colleague, actor Isa A. Isa.

The actress was charged with defaming Isa in a video and posted the same on her social media pages.

While reading his judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Muntari Dandago, said he found the actress guilty on all counts against her.

The actress had in a viral video, accused Isa of being a homosexual, a bastard and an unrepentant womaniser.

She alleged that the actor, Isa, demanded anal sex from her in the viral Instagram post.

The judge further ruled that in case Haruna continued to defame Isa, she would be sentenced to three years in prison.

He said the actress had up to three months to appeal the judgement.

Crime / Hanifa: Osinbajo Visits, Condoles With Family Of Slain Kano Pupil by Hermzou: 1:20am On Feb 09, 2022
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the family of the kidnapped and murdered Kano pupil, Hanifa Abubakar, in the state.

Osibanjo who was accompanied by the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and some members of the National Assembly, expressed condolences on behalf of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and himself to the family.

According to a statement issued by the senior special assistant to the Vice President, Laolu Akande, prayers were also offered for the departed during the visit.

The statement noted that the father of the slain schoolgirl, Alhaji Abubakar, expressed gratitude to the President and the VP for the visit and the condolences to his family over the killing of his daughter.

He said, “I am rather speechless. I don’t have enough words to quantify my joy and gratitude over the visit of the Vice President to my family to condole me.

“As I told him, it should be the other way round, the Vice President is our father; we are supposed to go and pay him a visit, not him coming to us.

“However, I am grateful, I am sincerely honoured. The only thing I will say is to pray for him and the entire nation, that peace will reign.”

Science/Technology / Indonesia Crocodile Freed From Tyre After Five Years [pics] by Hermzou: 7:41pm On Feb 08, 2022
previous trend: https://www.nairaland.com/5669305/crocodile-indonesia-tyre-around-neck

Dozens of people drag 5.2-metre animal to shore and cut tyre from its neck after it was snared by bird-seller

A man removes binding from the crocodile’s jaws after freeing the animal from the tyre.

A wild crocodile in Indonesia that was trapped in a tyre for more than five years has been rescued, freed from its rubber ring and released back into the wild.

Conservation workers have been trying to lure the stricken saltwater crocodile from a river since 2016, after residents of Palu city on Sulawesi island spotted the animal with a motorbike tyre wrapped around its neck.

But it was a local resident who eventually snared the 5.2-metre (17ft) long reptile – regularly seen sunbathing in the Palu River in central Sulawesi – late on Monday.

Tili, a 34-year-old bird-seller, used chicken as bait and ropes to catch the animal at the end of what he said was a three-week rescue effort, before dozens of locals helped to drag the crocodile to shore and cut the tyre around its neck.

“I just wanted to help, I hate seeing animals trapped and suffering,” said Tili, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

His first two attempts to rescue the animal failed because the ropes were not strong enough to contend with its weight, he said, before turning to nylon ropes used for tugging boats.

“I was already exhausted so I let them finish the rescue. The crocodile was unbelievably heavy, everybody was sweating and getting very tired.”

The animal was released back into the water after the rescue to relieved cheers from locals.

Conservationists believe someone may have deliberately placed the tyre around the crocodile’s neck in a failed attempt to trap it as a pet in the archipelago nation that is home to several species of the animal.

Tili beat the authorities to the capture because they lacked the proper equipment for a rescue in the river, which houses more than 30 other crocodiles.

“Yesterday was a historic day for us, we are grateful the crocodile was finally rescued and we appreciate the locals who showed concern for the wildlife,” said Hasmuni Hasmar, head of the local conservation agency.

The reptile made headlines in early 2020 when the local government promised a reward to anyone who caught it and removed the tyre, but later called off the contest over fears it could endanger the animal’s safety.

But the local conservation agency said Tili was in line for a prize after his daring plan paid off. “We will award Tili for his effort in rescuing the wildlife,” Hasmar said.

President Xi Jinping has declared the
Beijing Winter Olympics open on
Friday as China tried to turn the
page on a buildup overshadowed by
human rights concerns, COVID and a
US-led diplomatic boycott.
Fireworks exploded over the “Bird’s
Nest” as the lattice-shaped stadium
took centre stage, just as it did at the
2008 Games, as Beijing becomes the
first city to host both a Summer
and Winter Olympics.
The opening ceremony started at
8:00pm (12:00 GMT) and was
attended by President Xi Jinping,
under whose rule China has adopted
a more muscular attitude
internationally compared with 14
years ago.
The snowflake-themed ceremony got
off to a solemn start when eight
soldiers slow-marched with the
Chinese flag, before the national
anthem rang out into the cold night
air.
Xi was given a rapturous welcome
by the socially distanced crowd
wearing face masks, for what his
governing Communist Party hopes
will be a soft-power triumph.
China and Russia have both seen ties
with Washington deteriorate
markedly, and with tensions rising
in Europe over Russia’s troop
buildup on the Ukrainian border,
Putin hailed the “truly
unprecedented nature” of relations
with his hosts.
The United States, United Kingdom,
Canada and Australia are among
countries staging a diplomatic
boycott of the Games over China’s
rights record, particularly the
treatment of the mostly Muslim
Uighur minority in Xinjiang.

Nairaland / General / Morocco Rescuers Race To Save Boy Trapped In Well For Days [Pics] by Hermzou: 2:08am On Feb 05, 2022
Rescuers in Morocco raced against
the clock on Friday to save a young
boy trapped in a deep well for
almost three days, in an operation
that has gripped the kingdom with
hundreds of thousands anxiously
glued to live broadcasts.
Relief operations intensified for five-
year-old Rayan, who fell down a 32-
metre (100-foot) deep well on
Tuesday, as darkness fell with
diggers clawing out dirt under
floodlights to create a hole next to
the narrow shaft.
Government spokesman Mustapha
Baitas promised on Thursday that
the child will rescued soon.
“Our hearts are with the family, and
we are praying that he will be back
with them as soon as possible.”
The drama has sparked an
outpouring of sympathy online, with
the Arabic hashtag #SaveRayan
going viral across North Africa,
including in neighbouring Algeria.
The drilling in the village near Bab
Berred in Morocco’s rural northern
province of Chefchaouen has hit 27
metres (88 feet), with “the hope of
reaching 32 metres (105 feet) in the
next few hours”, Morocco’s MAP
news agency reported.
The rescuers will then dig three
metres horizontally “between the
hole and the well to recover the
child”, it said.
A medical team was dispatched to
the scene to carry out initial checks
and potential resuscitation once the
boy is rescued.
Rescuers were able to send the child
oxygen and water via pipes, and a
police helicopter is on standby to
evacuate him to a nearby hospital.
Rayan’s father told Le360 news
website he had been repairing the
well when the boy fell into it.
“I couldn’t sleep a wink all night,” he
said.
His grandmother Laaziza told AFP
Rayan “is very loved here in the
village, not just at home” by his
family.
Lead rescuer Abdelhabi Temrani
told Al Oula television that the
diameter of the well was less than 45
centimetres (18 Inches).
Baitas said the nature of the soil
meant it was too dangerous to try to
widen the hole, meaning major
excavations around it were the only
solution.
The broadcasts of several Moroccan
media outlets are being followed
minute-by-minute by hundreds of
thousands of internet users hanging
on for news about the child’s fate.
Moroccan footballer and PSG star
Achraf Hakimi mentioned the rescue
efforts on social media, alongside
emojis of a broken heart and hands
together in prayer.
The boy’s fate has attracted crowds
of people to the site of the operation,
putting pressure on rescuers
operating in “difficult conditions”,
Baitas said.
“We call on citizens to let the
rescuers do their job and save this
child,” he said.
The accident echoes a tragedy that
occurred in Spain in early 2019
when a 2-year-old child died after
falling into an abandoned well 25
centimetres (10 inches) wide and
more than 70 metres (230 feet) deep.
Julen Rosello’s body was recovered
after a search and rescue operation
that lasted 13 days.

Foreign Affairs / In Pictures: Ukraine On Edge Amid Fears Of A Russian Invasion by Hermzou: 11:18pm On Jan 24, 2022

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auV-5qc3CUk

Russia has deployed tens of thousands of troops near the Ukraine border, triggering the worst security crisis to emerge between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.

The West, led by the US, has thrown its weight behind Ukraine, which lost control of its Crimean Peninsula when Russia annexed it in 2014.

The Kremlin has justified its military muscle-flexing as an attempt to counter decades of NATO expansion in the region. Russia has demanded legally binding guarantees that the NATO alliance will not embrace Ukraine and other former Soviet nations, or place weapons there. It also wants NATO to pull back its forces from countries in Central and Eastern Europe that joined the alliance since the 1990s.

Russia has also been accused of backing armed separatists in eastern Ukraine. The conflict has left more than 13,000 people dead in nearly eight years of fighting. A 2015 peace deal brokered by France and Germany helped end large-scale battles, but a political settlement has stalled, and frequent skirmishes have continued along the tense line of contact.

In early 2021, a spike in ceasefire violations in the east and a Russian troop concentration near Ukraine ignited the invasion fears, but tensions abated when Moscow pulled back the bulk of its forces after manoeuvres in April.

The military buildup near Ukraine resumed in late 2021, with Ukrainian and Western officials warning that the increased troop concentration could herald a multipronged Russian attack.

Crime / 970 Prisoners Undergoing Degree Courses by Hermzou: 8:35pm On Jan 22, 2022
At least 970 inmates are undergoing
various academic programmes in
custodial facilities across the
country.
This was disclosed by the Controller
General of Nigerian Correctional
Service (NCoS), Halliru Nababa in
Abuja on Friday.
He said the inmates were running the
programmes at the National Open
University of Nigeria (NOUN).
“This is aside from the large number
of inmates that sat for the West
African Examination Council (WAEC)
and National Examination Council
(NECO) with impressive results,” he
said.
Nababa said the era of seeing
custody as punitive and an end to
one’s career was over, adding that
the service emphasised the training
of inmates in preparation for their
reintegration into society as useful
and responsible citizens.

Crime / Bullying: SS2 Student Slit Throat Of Junior Colleague In Borno [Pics] by Hermzou: 8:16pm On Jan 21, 2022
A 16- year-old boarding student of
Elkanemi College of Islamic Theology
Maiduguri has been handed over to the
police over the attempted murder of a
younger student.
He was said to have slit the throat of an
11-year-old JSS 1 student, Jubril Sadi
Mato, with a razor blade at about 10:00 pm
on Saturday night.
Jubril was, however, immediately rushed to
the University of Maiduguri Teaching
Hospital, where surgery was conducted on him,
His parents, who live in Yobe State, said
they had received a disturbing call on
Sunday morning from the school authority
asking them to come over.
“Though in critical condition, he is
breathing normally, I thank God that he is
still breathing. The person who did this
thing to him must be a serious criminal.
This is a heinous crime to get hold of a
small boy like this and slit his throat it’s
terrible. The CID came and they met me
here and I am sure they are on top of it,”
his guardian told Channels Television.
Also speaking to journalists, the principal
of the junior section of the school, Kashim
Ibrahim Abdullahi said: “This incident
happened in the night and was after the
prep time. I was in my house in the
quarters of the Elkanemi College when the
students ran to me and said somebody
was bleeding terribly. So, I picked my car
and rushed the boy to the state specialist
hospital where the doctor referred us to the
trauma center here in the University of
Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
“The child has been given a befitting
treatment and an operation before he was
brought to the Intensive Care Unit”.
Family sources say Jubril’s vocal cavity
was affected by the injury but he has been
able to scribble some details of what
happened on the night he was assaulted.
The school authorities also denied
allegations of an attempt to shroud the act
in secrecy in order to set the perpetrator
free.
“We are going to stand to see that justice is
given; we are not going to support anybody
that will do this heinous act. We are a
school of Islamic theology and this is not
what we are preaching but you know when
you are dealing with human beings, some
human beings are vicious you may not
know. This is something that is hidden but
thank God we have seen this and we are
going to take drastic measures,” the
principal said.
Meanwhile, the hostel masters in charge of
the rooms that the boys were, have been
fired, but still in the school’s custody to aid
investigations.

This is a demolished house with a mosque in it that is along Independence way, in Kaduna state Nigeria.
