The Anambra State government has praised the founder and chairman of Nigeria’s biggest airline, Mr Allen Onyema, for what it called his unprecedented patriotic gesture in bringing back free of charge yesterday 147 Nigerians from South Africa afraid of their safety in the ongoing xenophobic attacks against African and Asian immigrants in the rainbow nation.
 
The commendation is contained in a statement today in Awka, the Anambra State capital, by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, who explained that the government decided to commend Mr Onyema after a meeting in the Governor’s Lodge this afternoon at which Governor Willie Obiano presided.
 
Adinuba explained that the “huge humanitarian gesture is the latest in a series of philanthropic activities by the Air Peace chairman which Governor Obiano recognized in his public declaration last July 2 when he stated that Mr Onyema was driven by sheer patriotism rather than profit by starting direct flights into Shirjah and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates at less than 50% of the tariffs charged by foreign carriers”.
 
The Anambra State government noted that “no persons, not even our suffering and frightened people in South Africa, sought free flights when Chief Onyema decided to offer one of his planes to the former apartheid country to bring our distressed people home at no charge to them.
 
“The flight must have cost him at least N50m in view of the fact that the machine spent an additional two nights in at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, causing the airline to pay more to the South African aviation authorities.
 
“We also note that Chief Onyema didn’t know any of the persons he lifted all the way from Johannesburg free. He was only moved by sheer patriotism and love of humanity, especially the downtrodden and the distressed.
 
“As is already well known, Chief Onyema went into airline business five years ago to create jobs for Nigerians, enhance business opportunities in the industry for our citizens and enhance Nigeria’s presence in global business.
 
“He exemplifies the principle of solidarity with the human family and commitment to the common good”.
 
The Anambra State government, while encouraging the Federal Government to do everything within its power to bring back as soon as possible over 500 Nigerians who have signified interest in leaving South Africa immediately, thanked all Nigerians for supporting the Federal Government’s robust response to the latest wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
 
“The Nigerian people are far more united than most people seem to appreciate”, Adinuba quoted Governor Obiano as observing, adding, “It is only when we act as one united family that we make progress and the world takes more seriously”.

82 DIVISION GETS A NEW GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING (GOC)

 

1. In line with the recent routine posting and appointment released by the Nigerian Army , which also mandated change of General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Nigerian Army, the newly posted in Acting General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Brigadier General Lasisi Adegboye has officially assumed command following a successful handing and taking over ceremony with the posted out General Officer Commanding, Major General Abubakar Maikobi, held today Wednesday September 2019 at the Headquarter 82 Division Enugu.

2. This development has brought to an end a successful tour of duty by Major General Abubakar Sadiq  Maikobi as GOC 82 Division as he will be proceeding to Defence Headquarters Abuja to take up his new appointment as Director Campaign Planning. Consequently, Brigadier General Lasisi Adegboye, will with effect from date commence his tour of duty as the GOC 82 Division following his posting from Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Kaduna State, where he served as Director Joint Services.

3. In his farewell remarks, Major General Maikobi recounted the achievements of the 82 Division during the period he served as GOC, especially in the area of improved security situation within the Divisions Area of Responsibility and while thanking God for the heights attained, he attributed the successes to the Officers and men for their unalloyed loyalty, support and cooperation as well as commitment to duty. He further urged them to extend the same loyalty and cooperation to the new General Officer Commanding.

 

4. Brigadier General Lasisi Adegboye during his remarks congratulated the outgoing General Officer Commanding 82 Division for a successful tour of duty and also commended the Officers and men of the Division for the support accorded to his predecessor. He however stated that he wasnt surprised by his predecessors achievements having known his track records as well as the standard of discipline required of Officer and men of the 82 Division, assuring that he will sustained and work towards improving the legacies by Major General Maikobi. Recall that Brigadier General Adegboye has previously served as Command 82 Division Garrison from January 2017 to January 2019.

Five persons have been arrested in a failed attempt to resume hostilities in the 25-year Oruku/Umuode communal war in Nkanu East, Enugu State.
A serving Major in the Nigerian Army believed to be a major sponsor of the conflict has also been fingered to be behind the plans to resume the war.
What could have been a major setback to the peace initiative by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was averted last Wednesday following the arrest of some young men allegedly hired by the army officer to renew hostilities against Umuode.
The army officer  alleged to be a major sponsor of the communal war, hails from Oruku side and is said to be serving in the finance department of Nigerian Army.
He was accused of working with some persons to scuttle the boundary delineation exercise ordered by the state government in the white paper on the resolution of the feud.
The Army officer who is related to a major stakeholder from Oruku had allegedly donated N6m to Oruku Town Union in March this year in support of the war.
This was contained in two different petitions sent to the Inspector General of Police, the state governor and the state Commissioner of Police by a former Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area, Mr. Ejike  Ani and Chairman, Oruku Town Union Caretaker Committee, Mr. Emma Mba.
Following the petitions, five persons fingered to be fighters in the communal conflict, were arrested by the police and arraigned in court on Thursday.
They were accused of plotting to launch fresh attacks on Umuode and cause further mayhem in the area  and were subsequently remanded in prison custody.
The petitioners said that following Governor Ugwuanyi’s peace initiative which helped both communities to settle the age-long war on June 14, 2019, some  Oruku natives have continued to sponsor  some youths to extend the hostility against Umuode.
They also claimed that the army officer personally threatened to eliminate them for raising the alarm over threat to their lives and the plot to launch fresh attack on the neighbouring Umuode community.
The petition by the former council chairman reads: “The Army Major attached to the Finance department of the Nigerian Army with phone number (withheld) has been financing and supporting the war with various amounts . He deposited N2,000,000 and N4,000,000 to the account of the Oruku Town Union with First Bank Plc on the 2nd and 19th March 2019 respectively for purchase of Arms and ammunition and was rewarded with over 3 hectares of land by the then Town Union headed by Mr. Anthony Nnamani.

Less than 72 hours after a Reverend Father was brutally murdered by a yet to be identified gunmen, a traditional ruler has been reportedly kidnapped on Sunday evening.

The victim is His Royal Highness, Igwe Sunday Orji of Obom-Agbogugu, Awgu Local government Area has been kidnapped this Evening by gunmen suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen.

The traditional ruler an eye witness told Reporters was kidnapped just after Agbogwugwu-Ihe junction while he was coming back from the reception of the Thanksgiving service organised by the Bishop of Awgu Diocese for a successful priestly ordination of the dioceses yesterday.

An eyewitness told Reporters that the gunmen they are convinced are Fulani herdsmen shot sporadically into the air before whisking the traditional ruler and his wife away.

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu has fixed September 9, 2019 to deliver judgement in a suit filed by the APC candidate, Barrister Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu challenging the return of Ike Ekweremadu as senator representing Enugu West in the Feb. 23, 2019 Election.
Also joined as petitioners is the All Progressive Congress (APC), with former deputy president of the senate, senator Ike Ekweremadu as 1st respondent, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), INEC as 2nd and 3rd respondents respectively.
Newsportfolio reports that Hon. Justice H. Kerang who is the Chairman of the tribunal fixed the date after the adoption of the final written addresses by the Counsels to the petitioners and the three respondents.
The counsel to the petitioner, Barrister. H. Bello (SAN) urged the tribunal to cancel the election due to the failure of the 3rd Respondent (INEC) to comply with provision of Regulation 37 of the INEC guidelines for the 2019 Elections.
“It is our submission that the said guidelines are mandatory and omission done in non-compliance renders the exercise a nullity.
“The situation we have at hand is that the INEC put the cart before the horse. The senatorial result was announced on the 23rd of February, while that of the local government was announced on the 24th February; how can it be? This result is suspicious. That is why we are saying this result is void, and the collation should be voided”, said Bello.
In her final submission, counsel to the 1st Respondent A.J. Offiah, (SAN) urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition as it lacks evidence to proof both the civil and criminal allegations raised.
Counsels to the 2nd (PDP) Barr. Onyinyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) and Barr. Emeka Udeogba for 3rd Respondents, however concurred with Barr. Offiah, and urged the Lordships to dismiss the petition for lack of merit.
Newsportfolio also gathered that the tribunal equally fixed 3rd Sep. 2019 to deliver judgement on the petition by Rt. Hon. Eugene Odo challenging the election of senator Chuka Utazi repsenting Enugu North Senatorial zone.
5th September was also fixed for Hon. Ikechukwu Ugwuegede vs Hon. Dr. Pat Asadu representing Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal constituency in the House of Reps.

President Muhammadu Buhari will travel to Liberia on Friday to attend the country’s 172nd independence anniversary celebration, the Presidency said on Thursday.

Buhari is to be honoured with “The Grand Cordon of the Knighthood of Venerable Order of the Pioneers,” which is Liberia’s highest national honour, as part of the visit.

“The award is presented by the government for outstanding and distinguished service in international affairs, government, religion, art, science or commerce, and also for singular acts of philanthropy and deeds of heroism and valour.

“President Buhari will be accompanied by Governors Kayode Fayemi, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Mai Mala Buni of Ekiti, Kwara and Yobe States respectively, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mustapha Sulaiman, and other top government officials.

The President is expected back in the country later on Friday”, a State House statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, said.

The National Youth Service Corps Foundation is searching for about 75 corps members who took between N300,000 and N400,000 loans to start small businesses but refused to pay after about four years.

The defaulting corps members, who have now passed out, used their certificates as collateral, which was the only condition to access the loans.

Our correspondent learnt the corps members had abandoned their certificates with the foundation for almost four years.

The NYSC Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Bako Ventim, confirmed this in an exclusive interview on Monday during the opening of Skills’ Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development workshop at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.

The foundation was in the camp to donate 10 sewing machines to the camp for SAED training.

The director said, “We have been providing loans to corps members and our interest rate is one digit. There is no collateral except the NYSC certificate and two guarantors. We make the conditions very flexible so that the corps members can benefit from these loans.

We have a challenge where corps members have refused to pay back the loans. We have over 100 corps members who took the loans but some of them have not paid back and we still have their NYSC certificates with us. They have not come to claim these certificates for a number of years.

“We give as much as between N300,000 and N400,000 depending on the business proposals. From the records, we have over 75 corps members that have defaulted and we are pursuing them.”

Meanwhile, the NYSC medical corps in Borno State on Monday protested non-payment of allowances promised by the state government.

The Batch B NYSC members, who gathered at the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri, told journalists they had not been paid for four months.

One of them, Cornelius Azi, said, “Often times, we work extra hours due to shortage of medical personnel in the state health facilities. We have explored all alternative ways of dispute resolution but they haven’t yielded results. We appeal to the government to honour its promise.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Alhaji Mustapha Alau, who later addressed journalists, said the governor had already directed the ministry of finance to pay the corps members

Frank Mba, force public relations officer, says Nigeria is one of the most beautiful places to live in.

Mba, who was reacting to a travel advisory the UK authorities issued to British citizens, said despite the security challenges in Nigeria, the country is peaceful.

The foreign commonwealth office had listed 21 of the 36 states in the country as safe but the force spokesman dismissed the position.

“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice against all travel to some States and border areas in Nigeria,” he said in a statement.

 

“While the Nigeria Police acknowledge that Nigeria is not without some security challenges, just like other nations of the World, including the advanced democracies, we wish to restate that Nigeria remains one of the most beautiful places to live in the world.

“It is a safe country with its own peculiar socio-economic and security challenges.

“We therefore wish to reassure Nigerians and the International Community of their safety and the commitment of the Police and other security agencies to continue to provide effective security services to the nation.”

The author of the petition against Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen`s petitioner, Dennis Aghanya, on Sunday has said his NGO is compiling findings “on the activities of other judges soiling their hands.”
The Executive Secretary of the Anti-Corruption and Research Based-data Initiative, said they are monitoring the ongoing tribunal cases emanating from 2019 general election and would forward its petition based on the findings to the appropriate agency at the proper time.

.

“We are also monitoring the ongoing tribunal cases from the outcome of the last elections and compiling findings on the activities of judges soiling their hands. These are those who have still not learnt from the mistakes of others. We will forward our petition based on findings to the appropriate agency at the appropriate time”, Aghanya said.

StateReporter News  had reported early this year Aghanya’s petition against Onnoghen to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation for false assets declaration which he was later convicted by CCT.

Aghanya however, advised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to redouble their efforts so as to not include names of persons facing corruption charges in the list of proposed cabinet members from Mr. President.

Buhari group blasts International magazine, ‘The Economist’ – “You are motor-park analysts”

The Buhari Media Organisation has accused “The Economist” magazine of engaging in specious and moribund analysis from an unabashed partisan point of view.

The BMO in dismissing the latest of The Economist’s analysis of the state of poverty in Nigeria observed that the International magazine merely immersed itself in aggregating common-place and ill-sourced data.

The Pro-Buhari group accused the magazine of engaging in frivolous election outcomes prediction, which it said had continued to fail.

This is in the light of “The Economist” sensational off-the-mark prediction that incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari would lose the 2019 Presidential election to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a serial presidential elections loser”, said the group.

In the statement signed by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Maduekwe, the group described The Economist as a shameless inquisitor with unveiled stakeholder interest in Nigerian affairs, but masquerading as objective analysts.

“The Economist’s latest report on the state of poverty in Nigeria is a sheer agglomeration of ill-thought and no reference sources of both primary and secondary data, merely targeted at deriding the present administration in a vicious bid to serve its predetermined agenda. There’s absolutely no way that agglomeration of jaundiced submissions glorifying unverifiable data will pass the test of objectivity and professional analysis

Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago is a frontline aspirant to the speakership of the House of Representatives of the 9th National Assembly.

The developing story is that I have withdrawn from the race, this is not true. I am in the race and I am going to the floor on the day of inauguration and by the grace of God, we will come out victorious because the issue we are calling for has not been addressed, the issue of justice and equity.

So,  all men and women of faith have continued to encourage us to continue on this journey and we are not going to rest on our oars. We have our colleagues behind us and by the grace of God, just the 360 of us are going to be in that hallowed chamber on that day to elect one of us. On  issues of loyalty to the party; you know when people talk about loyalty, I keep laughing.

Can there be anybody more loyal to the party than we are? We have come with General Buhari from the times of the TBO, to the CPC, to the merger that produced APC and now next level. So, I think that our pedigree, our record, our CV are too much for us to throw away at this is point in time. We are very loyal to the party, we are core Buharists and I have said it several times that the President, in his wisdom, told us to stand on the path of justice, fairness and equity, for whatsoever. So, I don’t think that we are only disciples of a leader who has taught us how to do things rightly.

During the President’s election campaign in 2015, he vowed to fight corruption and insecurity if elected. Since his election in April 2015, anti-graft war remains one of his topmost priority.

Before Mr. President`s statement, it`s a common knowledge that there is a lot of buying and selling in the Judicial circle, but who was bold enough to “bell the cat”?

Mr. Dennis Aghanya who hails from Amawbia town in Anambra state is the Executive Secretary of the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiatve (ARDI), a civil society organisation that was behind the petition to the Code Of Conduct Bureau (CCB) over non-declaration of assets by the convicted CJN.
He was President Buhari`s aide/ Media Spokesperson between 2009-2011.
A founding member, as well as the pioneer National Publicity Secretary of the defunct CPC.

Aside being the founder of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) in the South East and South South, he is PMB`s oldest committed and trusted ally from the Southeast.

For Mr. President`s anti graft war to be rooted, he needs such fearless and purposeful anti-corruption activist/crusader in his next cabinet or rather should head one of most sensitive Parastatal.
Such committed citizens should not be left untapped from their wealth of experience and knowledge.

Even though the United states, UK and other countries are fully committed and have endorsed the anti-graft war, we seriously need proactive thinkers like Mr. Aghanya who have shown capacity, technical and investigative knowledge to head one of the ministries.
Mr. president, he is committed, he is fearless, he has shown capacity…

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday receive Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Althani, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Emir had visited Rwanda on Sunday with senior government officials and business executives from the Gulf state.
The Monarch’s visit comes three years after Buhari’s trip to Doha in February 2016

Buhari had attended a meeting of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
During a bilateral meeting with the emir, Buhari invited Qatari investors to take advantage of opportunities in Nigeria and invest in energy, agriculture, real estate development, banking and finance.

The lawmaker representing Osun central senatorial district, Olusola Adeyeye, says senators earned as high as N20m as running cost until the 7th assembly presided over by David Mark.
Adeyeye disclosed this while reacting to the criticism of his stance that Nigeria’s constitution poes a problem for the country.
Adeyeye said he played a pivotal role in prevailing on David Mark, two-time senate president, to reduce the running cost of the lawmakers.

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari over his latest condemnation of bombing in Sri Lanka.

Buhari, on Sunday expressed sadness over the horrific attacks on several churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on the holy day of Easter.

The President in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Sunday extended his deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

“We stand with victims of terrorism all over the world because we know and understand this harrowing inhuman activity,” the President said.

But, reacting to Buhari’s statement, Omokri queried the president for not responding to the attack on expatriates and Nigerians at Kajuru castle, Kaduna.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, has reacted to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT’s conviction of suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

The CCT had, on Thursday, banned Onnoghen from holding public office for 10 years.

In his judgment over alleged non-asset declaration against Onnoghen, the Chairman of CCT, Danladi Umar also removed Onnoghen from office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, National Judicial Council, NJC.

Umar ruled that all Onnoghen’s monies deposited in his Standard Chartered Bank account in Wuse 2, Abuja be confiscated, seized and forfeited.

The CCT Chairman held that the monies in the affected five bank accounts were acquired illegally particularly as Onnoghen could not proved his source of income for the seized monies beyond all reasonable doubts.

Reacting to the ruling, Onochie warned that others would soon follow.

President Muhammadu Buhari, at the crucial meeting organised by the All Progressive Congress (APC) on Monday, February 18, threatened that the Independent National Electoral Commission would have to explain to Nigerians why it suddenly postponed the election.

The electoral commission, in a memo released on Saturday, February 16, announced its decision to postpone the highly anticipated presidential and National Assembly elections citing ”logistics” reason.

But speaking at the meeting, which also had in attendance the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, and top party leaders, the president vowed that INEC would not be given a soft landing over its shocking decision.

The president, who said INEC had all resources it needed to hold the election, lamented that he had to immediately leave his Daura home to attend to national issues due to the sudden postponement.

He said: “I have to leave my constituency and come to Abuja immediately because I was told of the decision of INEC about 4:30 in the morning.

”I told them in my statement at the airport that INEC had all the time and all the resources they wanted and then they have to wait for only six hours to cast the votes to tell us that it is not possible.

”Definitely, the reasons why such incompetence manifest itself has to be explained to the nation.”

The outgoing Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, Monday gave what he described as two reasons the Igbo people failed woefully in Nigeria politics.

According to Okorocha, while briefing newsmen at the government House in Owerri, said that one of the reasons was that the Igbo people failed to accept the light coming to them.

He also said that the Igbo also did not appreciate the person who came to assist them. Okorocha went on to say that he was confident that his certificate of return as Senator-elect for Imo West, would be given to him attributing what has been delaying his certificate of return, to game of politics.

The governor also said he gave banks in Nigeria, seven days ultimatum to tell the world whether he has borrowed any money from them. He also challenged civil servants in the state, to open up whether his government was owing them. On the Imo West senatorial election, he said: “Elections have come and gone and we are dealing with the outcome. For the Imo West senatorial election, somebody said that he declared the result under duress.

The truth is that the gentleman was employed to do a hatchet job and he could not do that. “The drama is that he had another option he wanted to declare it in Owerri, at first he said there was no result and at a point he entered the toilet and suddenly he saw the results sheets and shouted who dropped this result here. What it means is that there is a game.

“I think that the INEC, should do the needful. We are in court and I think that we don’t need much procedure to do the right thing.” On the allegation that he was engaging in illegal withdrawal of funds and selling government property, Okorocha said: “After that declaration, Imo PDP, went to town with the allegation that I have withdrew N17 billion.

It is not possible. “I have said this time without number, and I gave banks in Nigeria, seven days ultimatum to come and tell the world If I have borrowed from the banks any money not only that, I am not owing any worker in Imo state, I also challenged them in seven days to come out and say the truth. “I am happy to bow out of government but I want to appeal that there should be peace in the land. There should be tolerance in the land. I here that they are counting my property, they should also go to Abuja, and count the ones in Abuja.”

Adding that, “Igbo have failed politically for two reason, not to accept the light that has come to them and also not to appreciate the leaders that have come to help them.”

Shehu Sani, vice-chairman of the senate committee on foreign affairs, has accused the federal government of treating the embassies abroad with lack of seriousness.

Sani said this when the ministry of foreign affairs appeared before the committee to defend its budget.

A Yola high court has dismissed a suit seeking to cancel the Adamawa state governorship election.

The suit was  brought by Eric Theman, candidate of the Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD).

Theman had dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the court for omitting his party’s logo on the ballot papers.

He asked the court to order the cancellation of the election and direct that a fresh poll be held.

But at its sitting on Friday, Abdulazeez Waziri, judge handling the case, dismissed Theman’s suit for “lack of evidence”.

 

He said the applicant failed to provide any evidence to back his claim that his party’s logo was omitted.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has rested its case of alleged misconduct against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, at the National Judicial Council.

Our correspondent learnt from multiple sources conversant with the proceedings of the five-man investigation panel of the NJC that the EFCC rested its case after calling seven witnesses.

The commission was said to have called its first witness on March 12 and rested its case within one week.

It was learnt on Sunday that Onnoghen has since opened his defence and called two witnesses on Wednesday, March 20.

“The EFCC has rested its case and Justice Onnoghen has opened his defence. With this, we expect that the NJC will soon end its investigation,” one of the sources told our correspondent.

In its petition before the NJC, the EFCC, it was learnt, accused Onnoghen of having some suspicious lodgments of huge funds in his bank accounts.

The other petition against the suspended CJN was reportedly by a civil society group, the Anti-Corruption and Research-Based Data Initiative, and it’s Executive Director, Mr Dennis Aghanya.

The allegations in the petition sent to the NJC by the group were said to be a replica of the petition sent to the Code of Conduct Bureau which informed the six counts filed before the Code of Conduct Tribunal accusing the

A frontline chieftain of the All Progressives Congress APC in Rivers State, Prince TJT Princewill said not t even INEC can save Wike.

 

The APC chieftain who was reacting to the suspension of electoral process in Rivers State as contained in a press release signed by Festus Okeye Esq. the National Commission and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee said: “INEC’s decision is illegal because it is not supported by law. Section 26 of the Electoral Act cited in the INEC Press Release is not even applicable because that section deals with a situation where a date has been appointed for the holding of an election, and there is reason to believe that a serious breach of the peace is likely to occur if the election is proceeded with on that date or it is impossible to conduct the election as a result of natural disasters or other emergencies, then the commission may postpone the election.” 

 

 

He noted that, “You can see that this provision does not apply to a situation where an election has already been conducted or held, which is the present position in Rivers State.

Since the elections in Rivers State have been held Saturday, INEC is bound by virtue of section 27 of the Electoral Act to announce the results. Having admitted in paragraph one of the Press Release that it has conducted elections on the 9th of March in Rivers State, INEC must by virtue of section 27 of the Electoral Act, announce the results. INEC’s decision to postpone the already held elections is ultra vires, illegal and unconstitutional. Such an unlawful decision can now be challenged in court by virtue of section 26 subsection 5 of the Electoral Act. The challenge can be launched by any of the many contestants at a court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction and on such a legal challenge, the decision of INEC shall also be suspended until the matter is determined.”

 

 

Continuing he said, “Our concerns about INEC and our lack of faith in the REC are continually validated. This was same way they suspended a by election we held a few months ago when it was clear we were winning. Now, the AAC candidate and several house of assembly candidates supported by APC are cruising to victory and they do it again. Can they not just step out of the way and let the will of Rivers’ people prevail? Rivers state was largely peaceful. Why not deal with areas where you say you have violence and leave the other results to go through? It’s common sense. Why suspend a whole state? Wike will go. It’s only a matter of time. We always knew this. Now the world knows it too. Not even INEC can save him.”

“That is what democracy is all about. So, if I say anybody in government in Nigeria or any government in Africa is not doing well, let that government prove that it is doing well; it is not taking things personally.”

In the run-up to the 2019 election, Obasanjo described the President as a sick man and urged him to resign and go back to Katsina.

Speaking at the PDP expanded national caucus meeting in Abuja on Monday, Secondus accused the President Muhammdu Buhari administration of winning reelection “with the use of military force”.

He said “with the way things are”, new leaders may only be announced in 2023 without any election taking place.

He insisted that the PDP was “rigged out” of the presidential election, adding that the party had finalised plans to challenge the outcome in court.

 

“Never has it happened in the history of our country that INEC will be so compromised,” the PDP chairman said.

“What happened on the 23rd has never happened since independence. All Nigerians are aware and the leaders are not talking. If you don’t talk against evil, one day evil will pursue everyone.

With things like this, in 2023 there may not be an election, it will be an announcement. It may be to put the figures together and announce.

“Our supporters and leaders are being arrested and the leaders of our country and peace committee are keeping quiet. What we have now is a full blown dictatorship.”

“They are celebrating rigging and manipulation and criminality and it will consume them one day,” he said.
