Hafsa Mossi, a former minister for East African Community (EAC) affairs and BBC Swahili journalist, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in Bujumbura, the Burundi capital, on Wednesday. President Pierre Nkurunziza declared the attack an assassination. “She was near her home and a tinted car knocked her from behind. She went out to see what happened and was shot twice,” a relative of Ms. Mossi told The East African. Assassinations of government and military officials have become widespread in Burundi since Mr. Nkurunziza announced he would run for a third term in April 2015. The political crisis has resulted in an estimated 500 deaths, while thousands have fled the country. “Hafsa Mossi’s death, the latest in a disturbing string of high-profile killings, is a great loss to the people of Burundi and the East African region,” said Muthoni Wanyeki, the Amnesty International Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and Great Lakes. “Her murder must be promptly, independently, and impartially investigated, and those reasonably suspected of responsibility held to account in fair trials.” Ms. Mossi served as the first Burundian EAC minister and chaired the Burundi chapter of the East African Legislative Assembly. She played a crucial role in integrating Burundi into the EAC source: 247nigeriannewsupdate.com

There was pandemonium at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) on Friday following a gunshot which was believed to be an accidental discharge. Two people were injured in the incident when a man identified as an orderly of a Senator accidentally fired the gunshots, it was learnt. He was trying to remove the magazine of his gun when the discharge occurred leaving him and another woman injured. The incident also caused panic within the terminal as travelers and airport workers scampered for safety on hearing the gunshot. Eyewitness report indicated that the security man was to travel on Arik Air and he wanted to dislodge the magazine from the gun in line with standard practice in air travel but incidentally the gun released its bullet. It hit him and the woman on the leg, it was gathered. An eyewitness said, "It is a standard practice in air travel for anyone with a gun to pull out the bullet. This is what the security man was trying to do but incidentally the gun released the magazine which splattered and hit him and the woman on the leg as he bent down to pull out the magazine from the gun". They, however, trekked out of the terminal to the vehicle that conveyed them to the hospital without any assistance. According to the source, the injury was not that severe. General Manager, Public Affairs of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati, confirmed the incident. He said what transpired was an accident which occurred while the man was trying to remove the magazine from his gun as a standard procedure because guns are not allowed onboard aircraft but they are usually checked in, in the luggage compartment. Dati, who described the incident as minor, assured air travellers that all the airports are safe and secure, adding that in recognition of the security challenges in the country and around the world, security at Nigerian airports has been fortified. 31-year-old businesswoman, Nneka Nwachukwu of Dape Village, Abuja, told a Wuse Zone 2 High Court that she poured acid on Peter Nwogu, because he raped her. Nwachukwu, led in evidence by her counsel, Moneka Azubike, told the court yesterday that Nwogu, the defendant, came to her house and forced her to sleep with him. The defendant was first arraigned on April 11, 2014 by the police for the offence of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code. She said that on December 1, 2013, she went to her town meeting at Wuse and came back around 10 p.m. She said: “When I came back, I warmed my food which I came back with, then I went to see my landlord, Ikechukwu Obi, to pay my house rent. “I came back to my room and saw Peter Nwogu, who is my church member in my room. He told me that he travelled but could not reach home because it was late. “I welcomed him as a church member and he then asked me if I have food. I gave him the food I warmed and I went to take my bath.” The defendant said when she came back from the bathroom, she saw the deceased with only his boxer and he made love advances to her. She said: “I tried to stop him, but he didn’t. We argued and in the process he forced me to sleep with him. I was shouting, but nobody heard me. “I bit him and he bit me too. He was so strong that I had to pour acid on him. That was in my room. I then ran out to my landlord’s room.’’ She added that she explained to her landlord what had happened and he followed her to her room and saw the deceased, who asked for help. She continued: “The deceased asked my landlord to give him water. My landlord took his clothes from my room and gave him and I went to church to tell my parish priest what happened. “I did not know that the acid I poured on him will lead to his death. I kept the acid in my room because I had been a victim of rape and there have been complaints of break-ins in my area. “On December 2, I went to Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, to report the matter but I was told that the matter has been reported as the deceased was already dead.” The prosecuting counsel, Patrick Ogele, cross-examined the defendant and Justice Mamman Kolo adjourned the matter till July 1 for continuation of defence. Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Friday renamed the Kogi State University, Ayangba , after the late first civilian governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu. Bello announced the change in the name of the 15- year-old university during a statewide broadcast to mark his victory at the state governorship election petition tribunal. He said that naming the university was the ultimate honour that could be done to the memory of the late colourful politician who ruled the state twice as the civilian governor from 1991 to 1993 and 1999 to 2003. Audu himself established the university in 2001 and named it Prince Abubakar Audu University but his successor , Alhaji Ibrahim Idris changed the name to Kogi State University in 2004. Justifying his decision to restore the university to its original name, Bello said that Audu laid a solid foundation for the growth and development of the state “Today, and as always, I celebrate the life and times of Prince Abubakar Audu, the first Executive Governor of Kogi State. ‘” It is our hope that those who want to lay claim to his legacy will at least develop the same heart for the growth and development of Kogi State that he demonstrated through his lifetime,” he said. According to the governor, an executive bill will soon be forwarded to the house of assembly to formalise the change in the name of the university. Audu, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) in the Nov. 21, 2015 governorship election in the state, died suddenly on Nov. 22 when before the result of the election was announced. The leadership of the APC consequently substituted the name of Audu with that of Yahaya Bello as the candidate in the supplementary governorship election held on Dec. 5, 2015. The governor also used the broadcast to thank the people of the state for their support and understanding since his assumption of office in January . He said that since the five petitions filed against him had been thrown out for lack of merit, the state was now set to witness a new direction and accelerated development. According to Bello, a blueprint of the administration which will kick start creation of one million jobs for the unemployed youths will be unveiled by next week. He called on all those who lost at the tribunal, irrespective of their political affiliation, to join hands with him to develop the state, saying “there was no victor, no vanquish.” |
Improper headset use can put your health at risk. The use of headsets has become pervasive in the business world. However, some potentially detrimental health consequences can emerge from using headsets, especially if they are not used and maintained in the optimal manner. This is not meant as a discouragement of their use. Personal and employee health are both very important in the workplace. As long as a few simple precautions are taken, headsets can be used and their benefits taken advantage of without exposing anyone to the possible harmful effects of their use. In many places, drivers are required to use headsets to talk on their cellphones while driving. This law was put into place to decrease the chances of accidents occurring because the driver's hands were occupied with a cellphone. Despite the obvious benefits of headsets, wearing one for a prolonged period of time can also have negative effects. Some of the negative effects are; 1. Hearing Loss: Anytime a speaker projects sound directly into your ear, there is the potential for hearing damage. The UCLA Ergonomics Division states that the volume of a user's headset is the largest factor in whether or not there is a risk of hearing loss. They suggest that the volume on the headsets be kept low enough that someone sitting next to the user cannot overhear the conversation. It is also recommended that users of headsets take breaks of a few minutes every half hour to prevent fatigue of the auditory system. 2. Radiation: Questions have been raised by many groups regarding the radiation that you could be exposed to when using a Bluetooth headset. In actuality, the amount of radiation emitted from these devices is well under the threshold of what is considered harmful. While studies have still not conclusively shown that even cell phone radiation is harmful, a Bluetooth headset actually reduces the radiation that you are exposed to compared to holding your phone up to your ear. Any radiation in excess of a 1.6 watt per kilogram absorption rate is considered to be unhealthy. Standard Bluetooth headsets only emit enough radiation to be absorbed at a rate of around .001 watts per kilogram. The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged the "anxiety and speculation" regarding electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and their alleged effects on public health. Using any type of wireless technology is putting our self in a field of microwave radiation. The effects of long term microwave radiation exposure upon the body have been documented in countless studies for decades. Long-term exposure to microwave radiation has been linked to: Headaches; Cancer; Leukemia; Brain tumors; Alzheimer; Autism; Miscarriages; Birth defects; Autoimmune illnesses; Multiple sclerosis and Hair loss Microwave radiation has been shown to affect biological changes within the body. These biological changes happen on a cellular level and their effects can be passed on to offspring via genetic damage (DNA, RNA). DNA and cellular damage caused to physical organisms by microwave radiation is directly related to the power of the signal and the length of exposure. Their high-frequency electromagnetic fields can lead to a significant increase in blood pressure and affect biological processes in the body just the same as cell phones. Just two hours of exposure to high-frequency EMFs from a cell phone or Bluetooth headset, can cause irreparable DNA damage. We can also link: Blindness; Deafness; Brain tumors; Neck pain; Skin rashes and Headaches Multiple studies have reported that as short as a single, two-hour exposure to cell phone or blue tooth radiation will result in pathological leakage of the blood-brain barrier. Using a Bluetooth Headset exposes the brain, the ears and the eyes to a strong field of microwave radiation. If you use Bluetooth earpiece in a car the effects are multiplied due to the Faraday cage effect. (Using cell phone in car is dangerous. Not just because it can cause an accident. There’s also a direct effect on our health. The radiations emitted from our cell and Bluetooth device are reflected back by the cars metallic structure magnifies the radiation. It’s called the Faraday cage effect, But using a cell phone in a car works on the same principles as a microwave oven. In both cases they are metallic enclosures where radiations are magnified. This radiation from cell phone bounces around car and is absorbed by your body at a much higher level than would otherwise be. 3. Germs: The telephone, or the headset that accompanies it, can be one of the most prolific breeding grounds for germs in your office. Professor Charles Gerba, University of Arizona Professor of Microbiology did research on the various places where germs congregate in the work environment and found phones and headsets to be far more germ infested than more obvious culprits such as toilet seats. Headsets should be cleaned regularly with a disinfecting product to help reduce the buildup of disease causing germs |

Few weeks after after two men were arrested in Lagos State for allegedlycloning the phone numberofGovernor Akinwunmi Ambodewhile trying todefraud the state of N50 million, one of the suspects,Saheed Damilare Eyitayo, has been reported dead after severe torture by men of the Directorate of State Service (DSS). According to the Eyitayo's family lawyer, the 39-year-old suspect who was said to have assisted his friends,Rilwanu Jamiu andBalogun Stanley Oyewole, in the scam, was in the custody of the DSS opeartives instead of that of the police, where he was allegedly killed. His family is also alleging foul play in his death, while asking the DSS to explain how it happened. They have also refused to collect the body of the deceased for burial from the DSS until the circumstances of his death are clear. According to the family, the late Eyitayo was arrested at midnight on April 4 by DSS operatives, who were on the trail of a syndicate that had allegedly cloned Governor Ambode’s mobile number, and taken to the DSS office at Shangisha area of the state, where he reportedly died during interrogation. It was gathered that the DSS operatives were on the trail of Jamiu, said to be Eyitayo's friend, and that led to the arrest of the late Eyitayo at his residence at 37, Aje Street, in Iyana Ipaja. The operatives reportedly broke into the late Eyitayo’s apartment while he was asleep, beating him up and chaining his hands and legs. In a press statement released by the family, a resident who witnessed the assault on the young man, told them: “I overheard Eyitayo telling the DSS people that the person they were looking for did not stay with him. He told them the suspect was his friend and only visited him the previous day. But, his explanation did not convince them. They beat him mercilessly till blood came out of his face. We could not recognise him again.” The DSS operatives were said to have moved to other apartments in the building, beating occupants and searching their rooms for the suspect and after three hours, whisked Eyitayo away to their Shangisha office. The late Eyitayo’s neighbours and friends who had been going to the DSS office for his bail, were kept in the dark about his death and on April 6, two days after his death, the DSS Director invited his landlord,Pa Taiwo Sobiye, to help the agency look for his family members. Pa Sobiye said: “When I got there, the Director called me to his office and told me Eyitayo died during interrogation. He said they tried to stabilise him medically but he eventually died. The Director asked me to help find his family members, but I told him I did not know anybody with him. The DSS copied out five numbers from the late Eyitayo’s phone and gave me to call. I could not reach any of them except one man, who had been coming to the house as his brother. I could not tell him his brother is dead. Some 19 days after, we eventually met with the family members. We all went to the DSS office together and they heard the news from the DSS themselves. We were told the body had been taken to the mortuary.” The bereaved family is therefore accusing the DSS of torturing their son to death, wondering why he would be chained and tortured when he did not know anything about the crime. The family head,Joseph Oluokun, swore they would get to the root of the matter: “We have been told how Damilare was chained and tortured for hours before he was taken into custody. The DSS told us that he fell as he attempted to escape. How is it possible for somebody whose hands and legs were chained to attempt to run? We are yet to be told the truth about the death of our son. This is why the government must help us to get justice.” The family, through their lawyer, has requested a coroner inquest to be set up to ascertain the cause and manner of the victim’s death. |
