Music/RadioKanye West At The Koko Koncert by HiMag(op): 11:54am On Sep 01, 2011
It's not surprising that the Mo’Hits crew rocked London at the Koko Koncert. As expected, it was a wonderful event with scintillating performances by the entire Mo’Hits crew – Don Jazzy, D’banj, D’Prince, Wande Coal, Dr. SID, K Switch and other guest performers.

The shocker that night will have to remain Kanye West's appearance on the stage. Kanye West who performed with Jay-Z at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards just a few hours before, hit the stage with D’banj at the Koko Koncert. The crowd went ecstatic as the GOOD Music boss hit the stage immediately after D'banj performed a rendition of 'All Of The Lights' with his harmonica. The appearance got so much love as the singing was near drowned by the excited screams and shouts.

After the show, D'banj and Don Jazzy took to their twitter accounts to ahow their appreciation for the star power Kanye brought to the show.

TV/MoviesGenevieve Fascinated By The Mirror Boy by HiMag(op): 10:40am On Sep 01, 2011
During the week, Genevieve Nnaji revealed she was fascinated by the simplicity of the story of Mirror Boy and the determination of the producer and director, Obi Emelonye to do something ‘special’ and the success of the movie in UK, Ghana and presently Nigeria has justified her choice.

'I was impressed with the way the writer spin a whole lot around of a simple story of mother and child and a spirit. It is told in such a way that you feel the three distinct characters. You feel the pain of a mother whose child is missing, you feel the trouble of an African boy born in Uk in search of identity and you feel the emotion of a reincarnated father who doesn’t want his biological child lost on the world of ‘missed identity’. It is the kind of story that touches you from the screen so I am not surprised at the success so far at the cinema’.

Mirror Boy which has been at Nigerian cinemas for four weeks running have so far grossed over N15 million and it sets the enviable record of being the highest selling Nollywood movie in Ghana and the longest running movie by any African in UK cinema.

The movie which was shot in Gambia features Genevieve Nnaji, Osita Iheme, and a Gambian star.

TV/MoviesNigerian Directed Film, Man On Ground Gets World Premiere At Toronto Internation by HiMag(op): 9:55am On Aug 26, 2011
The Akin Omotosho directed film ‘Man On Ground’ has been selected to have its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival due to be held from the 8th-18th of September 2011. ‘Man On Ground’ will be showcased in the Contemporary World Cinema category and will screened on the 12th, 13th and 17th of September.

TIFF describes ‘Man On Ground’ as follows:

‘A bold and exacting portrayal of rising xenophobia in South Africa. Omotoso casts the story of a young Nigerian man living in the African refugee tenements of Johannesburg who disappears against the backdrop of animosity against immigrants flaring into violent rioting. In the span of a single night, his brother, on a short visit from London, tries to elucidate the mystery’.

The movie was motivated by events started on the evening of Sunday 11th May 2008, when a gang of young men in Johannesburg’s Alexandra township forced their way into a hostel on London Road and initiated a merciless attack on residents they deemed to be foreigners. From this spark, the murder, rape, and looting directed at the bodies and belongings of non-South Africans spread within days from Alexandra to informal settlements in Diepsloot and the East Rand, where a Mozambican man, Ernesto Nhamuavhe was burned alive while bystanders laughed. Known to the world as ‘The Burning Man’, Ernesto Nhamuavhe, a husband and a father, is the primary inspiration for 'Man On Ground'.

SportsNigeria Now 38th In Fifa World Ranking by HiMag(op): 4:14pm On Aug 25, 2011
Nigeria has found its way back to the 38th spot on the log of the FIFA world ranking released yesterday. Nigeria moved up five places from the 43rd position in the last ranking.

Despite moving up five places on the ladder, the Super Eagles retain the 4th position in the Africa ranking with Ivory Coast, Egypt and Ghana still ahead. Nigeria looks good to further get a better ranking soon as preparations are being made ahead of the international friendly against Argentina- stakeholders speculate that a win for Nigeria will change her fate on the table.

On the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, the Spanish reign atop the table came to an end as the Netherlands end Spain’s reign of more than a year at the top to claim the spot for the first time ever. The Dutch profited from Spain’s defeat to Italy in a friendly that cost the world champions valuable points.

The Oranje is the seventh team (after Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) to sit atop the global ladder.

Music/RadioSade Enchants The Staples Centre In First La Performance In A Decade by HiMag(op): 9:25am On Aug 25, 2011
Last Friday, ageless soul singer Helen Folasade Adu (Sade) held a sold-out crowd captive during her set at the Staples Center, Los Angeles- her first performance in Los Angeles in a decade. The Nigerian-born, British-raised pop vocalist and her excellent band appeared for the first of three consecutive nights at Staples Center as part of her Soldier of Love tour.

The Singer who has supplied our soul music needs for over three decades has managed to hold on to an essential intimacy, one that exudes a confidence in a manner that seems almost eternal. John Legend opened with his performance before Sade took the stage. With two hours, four costume changes, countless set transformations and 22 songs later, the ageless singer offered highlights from throughout her and the band's career.

Sade on Friday controlled her environment with restraint and glamour, thus enchanting the crown for the duration of her performance. She began with ‘Soldier of Love,’ the title track from her most recent album. While her vocal range has never been her strength, she conveys the mood perfectly well with her delivering melody and the choice of her lyrics. Like she showed on ‘Your Love Is King’ and ‘Love Is Stronger Than Pride’.

She was at her best on ‘The Sweetest Taboo,’ where her voice not only sang but also hummed and whispered as though she were telling us a secret: that true love and endless passion are possible. She wasn’t selfish with her stage. Her charity felt absolutely genuine, as she offered wide open space for solos (guitarist Matthewman who doubled as the band's saxophonist and worked hard during the show), which she punctuated with loving smiles at each conclusion.

The bond among singer, band and crowd was best illustrated near the end of the show, after a delicate version of ‘By Your Side’. Onstage, the members mingled and hugged one another as the crowd applauded, and it felt like a gathering of people who'd just shared a few hours of idealized love together, an experience, like a summer meadow, beautiful but ephemeral.

Music/RadioEldee Battles Tecno Phone For Copyright Infringement by HiMag(op): 2:37pm On Aug 19, 2011
China based phone manufacturer: Tecno, makers of the Tecno brand of mobile phones- one of more popular and fast selling ‘China phones‘ in Nigeria, has been taken to court by Lanre Dabiri aka eLDee tha Don, for illegal use of intellectual property.

The phone company has been alleged to sell along with their phones, songs recorded by some Nigerian artistes, without due consultations or permission from the artistes to use the songs. As at press time, the company has made no moves to compensate the acts whose rights were infringed.

When eLDee and his consultants, Maxaro Consulting realised that one of his song, ‘Bosi Gbangba’, is among the songs pre-loaded on the phones, they approached the company to pay royalty for using the song. Tecno showed no remorse by granting the artiste audience to reach an agreement; instead they claimed they were helping the artiste to promote his song.

After filing a case in the court, the presiding judge ordered eLDee and his lawyers to visit Tecno’s local agents and representatives and seize all the infringing phones and all documents related to them.

In a much applauded move, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has allotted a budget of $220,000 (N34.1 million) for an ambitious 11 gold medals at next year’s Olympic Games in London, England.

President of the NOC, Sani Ndanusa, revealed in that, more than ever before, the NOC, which has the primary responsibility of leading the Nigerian contingent to the Olympic Games, is determined to ensure that the country records her best ever performance in the Olympics at the London Games.

It was revealed that 11 athletes selected from four different sports, where Nigeria will be competing for medals at the London Olympics, will receive the sum of $4000 (N620, 000) each every three months. Together with the sports commission, the NOC has selected 11 of these athletes as beneficiaries of training grant of $4,000 per quarter until the Olympic Games. We started giving out the money last month (July), and we are going to be doing that every three months,” Ndanusa explained.

Music/RadioFemi Kuti Wins World Music Fans Award At Big Chill Festival by HiMag(op): 10:54am On Aug 16, 2011
http://himagazine.tv/show_post.php?id=388

Afrobeat king, Femi Anikulapo Kuti, last Sunday reconfirmed that he is, in every sense of the word, not only the biggest Nigerian musician but the busiest in terms of appearance in international music festivals and concerts.

This he did in England at this year's edition of Big Chill festival that also featured the much hyped Kanye West (that Dbanj and Don Jazzy reportedly paid a whopping $3 million for a collabo) where his performance was not only described as "master class" by the London Guardian but also returned to Lagos briefly on Wednesday with an award from the festival.

Below, we publish unedited the Guardian of London review of Femi's show at the concert and that of other musicians that shared the stage with him.

"Hip hop star Kanye West divided fans with his headline show at the eclectic Big Chill festival. The singer, known as much for his temperamental behaviour as his run of candid hit singles about his own failings, treated fans to a set lasting nearly two hours on Saturday night.

But after West was half an hour late to the stage, blaming his tardiness on his voice problems and his "perfectionism", some gig goers walked away from the show in disgust. His frustration boiled over at times in a performance which disappointed some casual followers but delighted his fans, especially those at the stage front. Those who had expected a straightforward crowd pleasing show were further angered when he stopped to deliver a lengthy diatribe. The star began the show with Dark Fantasy, which he sang from the sound tower at the centre of the crowd.

Onstage, he was joined by 20 ballerinas as he ripped through Monster, Diamonds From Sierra Leone and Power in a set billed by West as a three act show. Set highlights included All Fall Down, Jesus Walks and Love Lockdown, all of which delighted the audience.

This was not a greatest hits set though, as West played some early tracks and stopped the show for a five-minute rant taking in his view on critics and the TV censors who banned one of his videos for allegedly offensive images of women.

In an age where stars are choreographed not to upset, West's frankness was refreshing although saying the ban had made him feel "like Hitler" will have tested some people's patience. Playing Touch The Sky and Gold Digger back to back produced the biggest sing-along, followed shortly afterwards by a triumphant Stronger.

The final "act" saw him dressed in red confessing to his womanising in Runaway, ending with maternal tribute Hey Mama. West then played two Amy Winehouse tracks over the PA in tribute to the late singer, asking fans to "protect artists".

The other highlight of the day at the eclectic festival was a psychedelic soul revue by U.S. newcomer, Jonelle Monae, who brought her Archandroid album to life in superb fashion backed by 20 musicians and dancers including a string five piece. Faster, Tightrope and a cover of the Jackson Five's I Want You Back won the Outkast protégée new admirers before she got all the crowd knelt down for Come Alive (War of the Roses). When she jokingly took credit for a burst of rain, fans could almost believe her.

Actor Idris Elba of Wire TV fame and Hollywood actress, Lucy Liu, were part of a watchable Bullitts performance, pop star Jessie J was a festival hit and Calvin Harris packed the revelers tent with a late night set.

Coronation Street's Craig Charles was on top form with his soul DJ set, another DJ set by 2manydjs mixed heavy dance with the likes of Blur while salsa band, Wara, provided late night salsa sounds.

The only disappointment was Metronomy, whose indie dance seemed lost on the main stage.
On the final day of Big Chill 2011, the mix of fans both young and old enjoyed the wide range of entertainment for which the festival has become famous.

Veteran Robert Plant rock and rolled back the years with a storming set which made a mockery of the fact that the singer is about to turn 63. His Band of Joy were not headlining the main stage - that honour went to Latin duo, Rodrigo y Gabriela - but their early evening show delighted ageing rockers and young followers alike.

Another experienced performer, DJ Norman Jay, showed all the skills he has acquired over the decades by entertaining the afternoon main stage crowd. A trademark set by the DJ - honoured recently with an MBE - began with a mix of gentle summery music. Jay repeatedly promised there would be "house music later" and soon had thousands of revelers dancing to fast Jamaican dancehall beats.

Away from the main arena, TV comic, Lee Nelson, who has his own BBC3 show, delighted the audience in the Big Chill Radio tent with a number of witty but risqué shows. Nelson, the creation of comedian Simon Brodkin, is like the council estate nephew of Al Murray's Pub Landlord, always saying the unthinkable on class, race and sex.
He may not be the most original creation but live, he is far funnier than his TV shows suggested. One of the faces of the festival, he held several "Well Good" parties, mixing audience banter with crowd participation and even beat boxing. He was also out and about in character, filming improvised scenes with revelers around the site. Nelson pushed the boundaries with jokes on subjects like the Austrian child sex case, but his cheeky glint in his eye ensures he gets away with it.

On a more serious note, another charismatic performer, Nigerian Femi Kuti, used his main stage show to make an impassioned speech against African corruption. The afrobeat multi-instrumentalist boasted probably the finest backing group at the festival, Positive Force, whose musicianship was a master class. Kuti was presented with a world music fans' award from the Songlines magazine at the finale of his show.

By contrast, the act on after uplifting Kuti, all female rock group, Warpaint, provided gloomy angular guitar music.

There was definitely a place for them at the festival, as young rock fans enjoyed their set."

The gallant Flying Eagles put up a good fight last night as they were routed out of the 2011 Fifa U-20 World Cup by a better French team. The Nigerian side fell short of booking a semi-final spot in a dramatic 3-2 quarterfinal loss to France after extra time in France.

Nigeria started strongly with Ahmed Musa threatening the opponents defence but it was the French through Alexandre Lacazette, who opened the scoring in the 50th minute when he beat the offside trap and slid the ball under the Flying Eagles goalkeeper Dami Paul.

Nigeria could’ve equalized but for the good display put on by France goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali. Substitute Maduabuchi Ejike’s 93rd minute equalizer handed Nigeria a lifeline and dragged the match into extra-time. In extra time, the French survived early Nigerian pressure before Gueida Fofana made it 2-1 in the 102nd minute of extra-time with a cheeky lob that was beyond Dami’s reach,
