2016 has come and go, for many it was a year with not so many good financial tales, for some others it would be a year to be remembered for years.

As a consequence, the black market rate started to diverge from the official rate significantly, proving great business for black market traders. In February 2016, the black market rate peaked at N380, being nearly twice as high as the official rate at N197 - N199. After months of uncertainty, the CBN decided to devalue the Naira to approximately N280, which equals a drop of nearly 30%.

Subsequently, imported goods and services became more expensive. Retailers increased prices, fuel prices went up due to deregulation and inflation is on its rise, hitting 15.6%, the highest value in 6 years, as mentioned by the National Bureau of Statistics. “People are currently looking for money in order to finance their daily activities. The EFCC on June 22, 2016 arraigned Ja’afaru Maliki, an aide to former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, along with Vwapamkai Bafyau, director of Rural Access Mobility Project/World Bank; Farouk Abdullahi Tarja, director, Civil Works; James Zarma and Suleiman Mohammed, both deputy permanent secretaries, and Mamman Malgwi, a permanent secretary, before Justice Balkisu Aliyu of a Federal High Court, Yola, Adamawa State.

They are facing a nine-count charge bordering on procurement fraud and diversion of funds to the tune of N700 million. The funds were meant for the development of the Yola bye-pass Phase 1 road project awarded to Nasser & Associate Global International Limited.

A group, Adamawa Awareness for Change had petitioned the EFCC, which subsequently investigated the allegation of fraud and misappropriation of funds levelled against them. The accused pleaded “not guilty”, when the charges were read to them, and were afterwards granted bail. Justice Aliyu has adjourned their trial to October 26, 27 and 28

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Nigerian footballers plying their trade in Europe. While some had the best, it was sour grapes for others like Joel Obi who saw red as his Inter side lost 0-3 at the San Siro.

Troubled Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama continued with his bench warming ways, playing second fiddle to Mickael Landreau while Ahmed Musa disappointed as he missed from the spot as VVV Venlo lost at home.

The two biggest Nigerian stars, Taye Taiwo and John Mikel Obi did not start as their clubs engaged in tough games.

England
Yakubu Aiyegbeni endured the 4-0 thrashing of his Blackburn Rovers side at Ewood Park as uber rich Manchester City had a fun outing. Aiyegbeni is yet to score, since his two goal heroics against Arsenal in his first game for the club.

Osaze Odemwingie was on for all 90 minutes at the Stadium of Light for West Bromwich Albion in their 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

Victor Moses was on the losing side as Aston Villa edged Wigan Athletic 2-0 at Villa Park with Nigerian-born Gabriel Agbonlahor putting up a five-star performance and getting the opening goal of the game.

Shola Ameobi was unused as a substitute as Newcastle United won a tight game 2-1 against Wolves at the Molineaux.

John Mikel Obi as a 57th minute substitute for Ramires in the Blues’ 5-1 romp at Bolton.

Fulham manager, Martin Jol brought in Dickson Etuhu for the final eight minutes as the Cottagers smashed Queens Park Rangers 6-0 at Craven Cottage.

Germany
Anthony Ujah was an unused substitute for Mainz in their thrilling 3-3 at Nurnberg. Ujah has made two appearances for Mainz this term but is yet to score his first goal for the club.

Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke was on for all 90 minutes for 1899 Hoffeinheim at the Rhein Necker Arena, holding undefeated Bayern Munich to a creditable 0-0 draw. Obasi is yet to score this season.

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo was on for all 90 minutes for Fernabahce who came out 4-2 winners over Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyespor at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadyumu on Saturday.

Super Eagles attacker, Michael Eneramo slammed home a 79th minute effort to rescue a point for Sivasspor in their 2-2 draw with Antalyaspor AS.

Ekigho Ehiosun was on for all 90 minutes as Samsunspor lost 1-2 at home to Manisaspor.
Spain
Odion Ighalo and Ikechukwu Uche were both on the bench for newly-promoted Granada who were beaten 1-0 by Valencia at the Mestalla.

Italy
Internazionale’s Joel Obi had a bad evening as he was sent off for a second bookable offence for a foul on Christian Maggio in the 0-3 loss to Napoli at the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza.

Ofere Edward was an unused substitute for Lecce in their 0-2 home loss to Cagliari.

Obiora Nwankwo was unlisted in the club’s 3-1 victory over Genoa at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.
AC Parma Coach, Franco Colomba did not list Under23 international, Obiora has yet to make an appearance for the Crociati this term.

Taye Taiwo was not listed in his club’s game with Juventus at the Juventus Arena.

France
Vincent Enyeama’s troubled start to life in the French Ligue 1 continued as he was left on the bench as Lille defeated Stade Rennaise 2-0.

Onyekachi Apam was not listed by the Rennes coach, Frederic Antonetti as his side succumbed to their second defeat of the season.

John Utaka played all 90 minutes for Montpellier in their 2-2 draw at Bordeaux. Utaka proved a handful for the Bordeaux back line. In the 25th minute, Marc Planus received a straight red card for a rough tackle on Utaka.

Holland
Ahmed Musa missed a 90th minute penalty as VVV Venlo were routed 1-3 at home by AZ Alkmaar.
Venlo’s other Nigerians, Michael Uchebo and Uche Nwofor were also involved in the game with the latter coming on as a second half substitute.

Rabiu Ibrahim was an unused substitute for PSV in their 2-0 victory at NEC.

Belgium
Joseph Akpala followed up his Europa League exploits as he netted his second goal within a week as his 71st minute strike earned Club Brugge a point in their 1-1 draw at Beerschot.

Nigerian champions, Enyimba FC of Aba, will make an attempt to record an African treble when they play against Wydad Athletic Club in the first leg of the Caf Champions League on Saturday.

The match will be played at the Complexe Mohamed V in Casablanca, Morocco and will be the 12th game of the Peoples Elephant in the 2011 edition of the African premier club competition. So far, the six-time Nigeria Premier League (NPL) winners are unbeaten in 11 games in the CAF Champions League and the team manager, Okey Emordi believes that his men will continue the streak in Morocco this Saturday.

The men in blue are determined to win this game, especially after losing in the Federation Cup final last Sunday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos to southeast rivals, Heartland.

In this edition, the Peoples Elephant have faced Saint Michel d'Ouenzé (Congo), US Bitam (Gabon), Al Ittihad (Libya), Al Hilal (Sudan), Coton Sport de Garoua (Cameroon) and Raja Casablanca (Morocco) in the run-up to Saturday's first leg semis.

Wydad previously beat Kano Pillars on 2-0 aggregate in the first round of the competition's qualifying round.

The other semifinal game is between Al-Hilal of Sudan and Esperance ST of Tunisia.

Yet again, the Super Eagles have fallien in the FIFA Rankings. The Nigerian team drop five places to 43rd in the world and sixth in Africa in the new FIFA world rankings released yesterday despite winning one game-a 2012 African Nations Cup qualifying game and losing in the high profile international exhibition game against Argentina in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The Samson Siaisia led squad was able to defeat Madagascar 2-0 in Antannarivo but lost 3-1 to a strong Argentina squad three days later, thus falling into sixth position behind Côte d'Ivoire,Egypt,Ghana,Burkina Faso and Senegal in the African ranking.

Nigeria will face Guinea in a must-win match of the 2012 qualifying series next month in Abuja also fell in the rankings. The FIFA rankings are based on results over a four-year period.

England also slip in behind Uruguay, Portugal, Italy and Brazil in the standings, while world and European champions, Spain go back to pole position, with Holland dropping to second and Germany in third, ahead of Copa America winners Uruguay.

Once again, Vincent Enyeama has been dropped out of the Nigerian squad to face Guinea in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Abuja on October 8.

Enyeama may still be on the recieving end of the stick after his role in protesting the team's travelling arrangements to Antananarivo, Madagascar in earlier this month.

This development means that Bnei Yehuda of Israel goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba will remain first-choice for the match against Guinea. Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu, assured that the OSC Lille Metropole shot-stopper still remains a squad member of the Super Eagles.

'Vincent is one of the best goalkeeper we have in Nigeria now. But he has to understand that the team can do without him. He is still in our plans for the future. For now Dele Aiyenugba will be in charge,' said Shorunmu.

Samson Siasia will officially announce his squad to face Guinea on Tuesday. The same team will also feature in the international friendly match against the Black Stars of Ghana in London on October 11.

British songstress Adele, who stands as the top-selling artist of the year, has been nominated for three awards, with Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds To Mars also up for three. The 18th annual MTV EMA will take place on Sunday 6 November at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena, airing on MTV channels around the world including MTV and MTV Base.

New this year, is the World Wide Act category, which celebrates diversity and the breadth of all the music that MTV has to offer by nominating incredible artists from all corners of the world. Fans will be able to vote for an artist/group within five different regions (Asia Pacific, North America, Latin America, Africa/India/Middle East and Europe). The nominee from each region with the most votes (to be announced the week of 24th October) will then battle for the “World Wide Act” distinction - to be bestowed at the show in Belfast.

Two of the reigning queens of pop will go head to head at this year’s EMA in four of the same categories, as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry compete for Best Live, Best Pop and Best Female, as well as Best Song, with Perry nominated for “Firework” and Gaga for “Born This Way”. Gaga is also nominated for Best Video for “Born This Way” and Biggest Fans. Multi-talented singer/songwriter Bruno Mars is up for four awards, including Best New, Best Male, Best Push and Best Song for “Grenade.” Adele has been nominated for Best Female, as well as Best Song and Best Video for “Rolling In The Deep”, and Justin Bieber will compete for Best Pop, Best Male and Biggest Fans. Thirty Seconds To Mars is up for Best Alternative, Best World Stage and Biggest Fans.

As always, the MTV EMA – MTV’s international celebration of the year’s best in music – features nominees from across genres, recognizing today’s hottest acts and global superstars. Foo Fighters, Snoop Dogg, My Chemical Romance, Jennifer Lopez, LMFAO, Jessie J, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Far East Movement, Kanye West, Linkin Park, Wiz Khalifa and Kings of Leon are each up for two EMA nominations.

Also new to the “2011 MTV EMA” is the Biggest Fans award, which will go to the most passionate fan base for a particular artist. Beginning Monday, 19th September, viewers can vote for their favourite EMA artists by visiting www.mtvema.com. The more fans engage with the EMA content featured on the site, the more their participation and points can boost the chances for their favourite artist to win.

Guess who was at the MTN power of 10 concert last weekend? Naeto C, Ikechukwu, Waconzy, Dr Sid, Chidinma, Mike and 9ice. The team rocked Enugu and Makurdi like never before alongside other acts like FreeWindz, D’Prince, Iyanya and Ras Kimono.

The Power of 10 concert would last for 30 days as it moves round ten cities in the country. The music concert starts on September 9th and will end on October 14th 2011 in Lagos. The ten cities include; Lagos, Makurdi, Enugu, Calabar, Port- Harcourt, Ilorin, Abuja, Owerri, Benin and Ibadan.

The MTN Power of 10 concert held at the Aminu Isa Kontagora Complex in Makurdi and Nnamdi Azikwe Indoor sports Hall in Enugu.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to stay off the much publicized fallout between Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

The goal keeper was dropped from the Super Eagles squad that beat Madagascar 2-0 in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on September 4 after he and some key players protested against the team’s travel arrangements. He was also missing in the 3-1 friendly defeat to Argentina in Dhaka, Bangladesh on September 6.

The Lille Metropole signed goalkeeper has reportedly apologised to the coach and his teammates since then but Siasia was quoted saying that even though he has accepted the apology, it was a imperative for the NFF to decide the fate of the player.

“It was very unfortunate that the incident happened before our departure. I dropped the player because I was afraid of his state of mind before such an important match.

“But it is now left for the federation to decide on his future with the team,” Siasia said.

The NFF seems to have taken a different approach on the issue insisting that the matter is within his purview. According to Ademola Olajire, official spokesman of the NFF, "the Federation is too busy to get involved in petty issues like that."

'I'll Take My Chances', the block buster movie produced by Emem Isong and Ini Edo will premiere in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on September 24th 2011.

The movie stars multi-award winning actress, Ini Edo and former Mr Nigeria, Bryan Okwara and lovely dance sensation, Ashleigh Clark. The movie which was shot in February has been is just about ready to be revealed to the world in Uyo. The Desmond Elliot directed movie features a stellar cast that includes a troupe of dancers, as well as veteran actor Jide Kosoko, Lilian Ikpe, Biola Williams and the late Sam Efe Loco in a story that involves drama, suspense, dance and love.

According to Emem Isong, co-producer of the film, 'We decided to premiere the movie in Uyo as a show of solidarity with the good people of Akwa Ibom because most of the film was shot there and depicts culture from that area. We also received much support while shooting so it will be great for them to see it first. September also happens to be the month Akwa Ibom state was created so I think it’s very apt for it to be shown during that period. It is poignant for me to release this film because this is possibly one of the last most recent films acted by Uncle Sam and he was outstanding in his performance! The film is infact dedicated to him'.

Without a doubt, Chocolate City is a force on the Nigerian music scene with its parade of international superstars like M.I., Jesse Jags, Ice Prince and Brymo. The Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to rule on the future of Super Eagles number one goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Enyeama, John Mikel Obi and Victor Anichebe voiced out their opinion over travelling plans for the game against Madagascar on September 4. They demanded for a larger plane in order to avoid a stop-over and allegedly requested that the trip be moved forward by two days.

While Enyeama may have settled matters with Super Eagles gaffer, Samson Siasia, the 29-year-old goalkeeper still has to face the ruling of the football federation.

‘Yes he called to apologise and I've put that behind me as we are a big family and it is expected that there will be misunderstanding at some point. He was genuinely apologetic’, Siasia revealed.

Super Eagles charismatic striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie made history last Sunday when he scored the fastest goal so far in the 2011/2012 English Premier League (EPL) season.

Osaze capitalized on a Richard de Laert error to score in less than two minutes on the clock, helping West Bromwich Albion defeat newly promoted Norwich City 1-0 at Carrow Road. He almost got a brace in the 76th minute but his penalty got saved by Norwich goalkeeper Declan Rudd.

KOGA Entertainment is set to host one of the biggest shows of the year,Top 10 MIC. The show, which is slated for December 23, 2011 at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, will be graced by top ten artistes that cut across all genres of music. “Our aim is to do a show that is ‘truly Nigerian’. It is not Hip hop; it is not Afro beat, Fuji, Dancehall or Apala. It will be everything Nigerian,” a statement from the concert PR agency Bigsam Media revealed.

Speaking on the preparation of the entertainment company, Elsie Oluko, Head of Operations, says, “KOGA is providing a platform that will unite the young and the old. In time past we used to have the Lekki Sun Splash which more than one million people used to look forward to yearly, but now we have no such concerts anymore. What we are trying to do is bring back the memories of time past, and create new ones. Our selection of artistes shows that we are fair to all ages and not settling for anything less than the best.”

Meanwhile, five out of the 10 entertainers that are expected to perform on the night have been announced. According to the organiser of the event, Nigerian superstars 2face Idibia will lead the new generation of singers such as M.I and Eldee to TBS on the 23rd of December 2011, while tested veterans will be led by two-time Grammy award nominee, Femi Kuti, while Afro Juju creator, Sir Shina Peters and Paramount King of Fuji, Abass Akande Obesere will represent the Juju and Fuji genre respectively.

‘Soccer’s Next Pro’ will pick out 11 of the country’s ‘top up and coming Football talent’ from a vast number of youth players spread across the country and offer them the chance to train with a top English Premier League club and an opportunity to become professional football player.

It was revealed that both companies have put together a celebrity reality TV show called The Big Game which will feature 30 celebs who will compete through a series of tasks just to make it to a final 11-man team which will compete against football legends.

The 2011 Nigeria Entertainment Awards held in New York, was hosted by Funke Akindele and Julius Agwu, with Zaina doing a rendiition of Kelly Rowland’s motivation and performances from Waje, Doggext, Rotimi , SamKlef ,Duncan Daniels and The Choc Boiz.

New Jersey based Nigerian artist,Rotimi won the “Best US Based Male Artist”. Other artistes nominated for this category included Duncan Daniels, T Money, Dami Oloye, Kunzo, and CapB.

Rotimi has just released the official video for the brand new single ‘Hello’, which features Freshman NYC producer/rapper Mickey Factz. The song is taken from his forthcoming mixtape entitled ‘While You Wait’, the visuals was directed by Berman Fenelus. Rotimi is sure one to watch out for this year.
