TOPIC: A New Beginning "Monday 20, October 2014" *TEXT: 2 Chronicles 23:12-21* "*Key Verse: “Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars” (2 Chronicles 23:17).*" There has always been “a new beginning” in the affairs of men. At the end of a year, another year begins; after wars, there are new beginnings to rebuild destroyed cities and villages. Old things do not always continue. By the same token, this old world is fading off for a new heaven and a new earth. Old things give way. After the death of Athaliah, the people wanted to put a stop to idol worship. They wanted a new beginning in Israel. So, they destroyed the insignia of Satanism; they even killed the priest of Baal to end an unfortunate era. Consider the case of Athaliah, a wicked and powerful woman who forced herself onto the throne of Judah after eliminating all the seeds-royal. Athaliah thought she had effectively quashed the divine plan of perpetuating kingship in the lineage of David. But another woman, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was used of God to rescue and preserve a one-year-old son of the late king. After six years of usurping power, Athaliah was deposed and the rightful person (the young prince) was crowned. Athaliah lost her life in the process. Jehoiada who spearheaded her removal also brought about a revival in the land. Baal worship and worshippers were flushed out of Judah; the true worship of God was reinstated and the kingdom consolidated. This brought joy and quietness to the land. This is nothing but God’s act. Mention must be made of the courage, care and commitment of Jehoiada, the priest who saved, nursed, tutored and eventually installed and anointed the young king. Men of such relentless zeal, faith, wisdom and commitment are in great demand today. It takes men who stick out their necks for God like Jehoiada to start a revival. Can the Lord count on you? If you are a beloved of God and heir of His wonderful promises, be assured that even if a thousand Athaliahs usurp what God has ordained for you - yea, they may flourish for a while - the hand of the Lord will pluck them out. *"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God makes all things beautiful in His time."* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/ * ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Well this link has this to say it made some good points take your time to read through. Now let us consider whether tithing is required in the new covenant. Tithing is mentioned only three or four times in the New Testament. Jesus acknowledged that the Pharisees were very careful about tithing (Luke 18:12), and he said that they should not leave it undone (Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42). Tithing, like other old covenant rules and rituals, was a law at the time Jesus spoke. Jesus criticized the Pharisees not for tithing, but for treating tithing as more important than mercy, love, justice and faithfulness. The only other New Testament mention of tithing is in Hebrews. The fact that Abraham was blessed by and gave tithes to Melchizedek illustrates the superiority of Melchizedek and Jesus Christ over the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:1-10). The passage then goes on to note that “when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also” (verse 12). There was a change of the priesthood from the Levites to Jesus Christ, and this implies a change in the law that assigned the Levites to be priests. How much has been changed? Hebrews says that the old covenant is obsolete. The package of laws that commanded tithes to be given to the Levites is obsolete. Humans should honor God by voluntarily returning some of the blessings he gives them — this is still a valid principle. The only place that a percentage is required is within the old covenant. There is good precedent for tithing before Sinai, but no proof that it was required. Responding to the better covenant Under the old covenant, tithing was required for the support of the old covenant ministers. The Israelites were required to give 10 percent — and their blessing was only a physical one! Christians in the new covenant have much better blessings — spiritual ones. How much more willingly ought we to give in thankfulness for the eternal blessings we have in Christ Jesus? The Israelites were commanded to give 10 percent under a covenant that could not make them perfect (Hebrews 7:19; 9:9). How much more joyfully should we give to God under the new covenant? We have the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which does cleanse our conscience (9:14). And yet it seems that in America today, even though we have so much more than the Israelites did, people give on average a much smaller percentage. Many people give less to the church than they spend on luxury items. Some people cannot give very much, but many people could if they wanted to. God calls on us to examine ourselves, to examine our priorities, and to be generous. The old covenant gave us condemnation; the new covenant gives us justification and peace with God. How much more should we be willing to give freely and generously so God’s work can be done in the world — to proclaim the gospel, to declare the new covenant ministry that gives us true life, and gives that message of life to others? People who entrust their lives to Jesus Christ do not worry about whether tithing is commanded in the New Testament. People who are being transformed by Christ to be more like Christ are generous. They want to give as much as possible to support the gospel and to support the poor. Christians should give generously — but giving is a result of their relationship with God, not a way to earn it. We are given grace through faith, not through tithing. Some people act as if Christ liberates us from the law so that we can keep more physical blessings for ourselves. That is false — Christ liberates us so that we can be free to serve him more, as loving children and not merely as slaves. He frees us so we can have faith instead of selfishness. When it comes to money, the real question is, Is our heart in the gospel of Jesus Christ? Are we putting our money where our heart is? We can tell where our heart is by seeing where we are putting our money. “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” Jesus said (Matthew 6:21). Needs in the new covenant ministry In the new covenant church, there are financial needs — to support the poor, and to support the gospel by supporting those who preach it. Christians are obligated to give financial support for these needs. Let’s see how Paul explained this obligation in his second letter to the Corinthians. Paul describes himself as a minister of the new covenant (2 Corinthians 3:6), which has much greater glory than the old (verse . Because of what Christ did for him in the new covenant, Christ’s love compelled Paul to preach the gospel, the message of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:11-21).Paul exhorted the Corinthians “not to receive God’s grace in vain” (6:1). How were they in danger of doing this? Paul had gone out of his way to serve them, but they were withholding their affections from him (6:3-12). He asked them for a fair exchange, for them to open their hearts to him (6:13). Paul told the Corinthians that they had a duty to give something in response to what they had been given. This response comes in terms of morality (6:14-7:1), which the Corinthians had done (7:8-13), and in terms of affection, which the Corinthians had also done (7:2-7), and in financial generosity, which Paul addresses in chapter 8. This is the way in which the Corinthians had closed their hearts to Paul and withheld their affections. Paul cited the example of the Macedonian churches, who had given generously, even to the point of self-sacrifice (8:1-5). The example is powerful; the implications are strong that the Corinthians needed to respond to Paul’s sacrifices by making sacrifices themselves. But Paul did not make a command (8: . Instead, he asked first for a turning of the heart. He wanted the Corinthians to give themselves to the Lord first, and then to support Paul. He wanted their gift to be done in sincere love, not from compulsion (8:5, . Paul reminded them that Christ had become poor for their sakes; the implication is that the Corinthians should make financial sacrifices in return. But then Paul reminded the Corinthians that they could not give more than they had (8:12). Nor did they have to impoverish themselves to enrich others; Paul was only aiming for equity (8:13-14). Paul again expressed confidence in their willingness to give, and added the peer pressure of the Macedonian example and the boasting he had done in Macedonia about the generosity of the Corinthians (8:24-9:5). Paul again noted that the offering must be done willingly, not from compulsion or given grudgingly (9:5, 7). He reminded them that God rewards generosity (9:6-11) and that a good example causes people to praise God and puts the gospel in a favorable setting (9:12-14). This was a collection for the poor in Judea. But Paul said nothing about tithing. Rather, he appealed to the new covenant environment: Christ had made many sacrifices for them, so they ought to be willing to make a few sacrifices to help one another. In asking for this offering, Paul was also making a financial sacrifice. He had a right to receive financial support himself, but instead of that, he was asking that the offering be given to others. Paul had not asked for any financial support from Corinth (11:7-11; 12:13-16). Instead, he had been supported by Macedonians (11:9). Paul had a right to be supported by the Corinthians, but he did not use it (1 Corinthians 9:3-15). This passage tells us more about our Christian duty to give financial support to the gospel. Workers should be able to receive benefits of their work (9:7). The old covenant even made provision for oxen to be given benefits of their work (9:9). Throughout his appeal, Paul does not cite any laws of tithing. He says that priests received benefits from their work in the temple (9:13), but he does not cite any percentage. Their example is cited in the same way as the example of soldiers, vineyard workers, herdsmen, oxen, plowers and threshers. It is simply a general principle. As Jesus said, “The worker deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7). Paul cited the oxen and wages scriptures again in 1 Timothy 5:17-18. Elders, especially those who preach and teach, should be honored financially as well as with respect. Jesus also commanded, “those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). This implies that those who believe should provide a living for some who preach. There is a financial duty, and there is a promised reward for generosity (though that reward may not necessarily be physical or financial). A need to be generous Christians have received riches of God’s grace, and are to respond with generosity and giving. Christians are called to a life of service, sharing and stewardship. We have an obligation to do good. When we give ourselves to the Lord, we will give generously. Jesus often taught about money. “Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me,” said Jesus to a rich man (Luke 18:22). He said the same thing to his disciples (12:33). The new covenant demands all that we have, and that is fair, since Jesus gave all he had for us. He praised a widow who put two coins into the temple treasury, because she gave “all she had” (21:4). Wealth is often an enemy of faith. It can “choke” people and cause them to be spiritually unfruitful (8:14). “Woe to you who are rich,” Jesus warned (6:24). He warned us about the dangers of greed (12:15) and warned about the danger of storing up wealth for self without being “rich toward God” (12:16-21). When we use wealth to help others, we gain “treasure in heaven” (12:33). This helps us have our heart in heavenly things instead of earthly, temporary things (12:34). “No servant can serve two masters…. You cannot serve both God and money” (16:13). But money competes for our allegiance; it tempts us to seek our own desires rather than the needs of the kingdom. After the rich man went away sad, Jesus exclaimed: “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (18:24-25). They have a duty to support the preaching of the gospel, to give financial support to their spiritual leaders, and the church needs this support. If disciples of Jesus Christ can give, but do not, they are falling short. The old covenant required 10 percent. The new covenant does not specify a percentage, nor do we. However, the new covenant admonishes people to give what they can, and tithing still provides an instructive point of comparison. For some people, 10 percent may be too much. But some will be able to give more, and some are doing so. Christians should examine their own circumstances and the better blessings they have been given in the new covenant through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us and the gift of the Holy Spirit to us. Contributions should be given to the church for its collective work of preaching the gospel and the expenses involved in the local ministry and congregational needs. Likewise, the new covenant does not specify any particular percentage for assisting the poor. Instead, it asks for equity — and we certainly have room for improvement in this. The old covenant required simple percentages. Everyone knew how much was required. The new covenant has no set percentages. Instead, it requires more soul-searching, more training for the conscience, more selfless love for others, more faith, more voluntary sacrifice and less compulsion. It tests our values, what we treasure most, and where our hearts are. Source http://www.gci.org/law/tithing |

The Good Old ones remains may God Keep The Few we have left |
Pls lets understand facts as adults concerning this issue if you feel you dont want to give no one is deeping his or her fingers in your pocket to give...i will like to ask you first have you given ur life to Christ? |If yes then i dont think this issue is worth discussing cos if you have done that and you know the consequences of your actions as you believe, then if a scripture demands you giving a 10th or part of what you have to someone in need or the propagation of the gospel there should be no worry or concern at all.... Anyone who finds giving for God a big deal hasn't given their lives to God. Take this for en-sample you give yourself to your spouse i mean ur whole self not the partial one we see this days, is there anything you cant give to him or her which you know you have a responsibility to take care of daily, weekly or monthly you dont find that an issue cos u r into it and mind you what you are giving to your is what you will get back in return if not even more cos i know some good ones will even add theirs and put something good on the table for you. If No then keep ur gifts and have a relationship with Him first before you think of giving.... We emphatically teach this in our church if u dont give ur life first ur gift are not acceptable unto God so is ur choice...you cant give something insignificant if you havent give the significant...ur heart is significant any other are insgnificant Now sometimes we really think we are doing God a favor by giving my brother we can measure what God has done for us to what we are doing for Him... it is countless and immeasurable to realistic |
ifeness:Christ death is not a religion bt a sacrifice as a token of redemption for mankind. This issue of tithe shouldnt get all over u a 10th of wat u ave dos nt wreck u sir giving is an act that cant b xempted frm d scriptures frm new to old testament but our attitude in doing so is what is paramount just like d widow Christ was making comparison with d pharisee |
i dont think this is worth arguing but so many needs illumination of d mind by d Spirit.... If u can give ur life to Christ what is money u cant give for him mind u know where and who you tithe to so u xpand d right kingdom. I only see people who value their properties other than their lives and the lives of others. Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. Acts 4:34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, Acts 4:35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. Acts 4:36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Acts 4:37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet. |
Christianity ought to be a kind of life that is Christ-like that grows into ones way of life that you live unconsciously. Not just a church goer or a denominational fan but truth seekers. |
TOPIC: The Noble Job "Sunday 19, October 2014" *TEXT: 2 Chronicles 23:1-11* *"Key verse: “And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem” (2 Chronicles 23:2)."* In all ages, the devil has always tried to thwart God’s plans, but he has always failed. The Almighty uses willing men and women to fulfil His purpose on earth. The Levites in our text were not found wanting. The Levites did not stand on the fence, they were rallied from parts of Jerusalem to do a noble job of protecting the young son of Ahaziah from being killed. For a long while, it seemed that the dynasty of David had come to an end in Jerusalem. This followed the fate that befell Ahaziah, the king of Judah. He had done wickedly and at the permission of the Lord, he was killed. On learning that the king was dead, his mother organized a massacre of all the king’s sons. Then, she took over the throne and began to reign. But unknown to her, the priest Jehoiada and his wife had hidden the young son of Ahaziah from being killed by his grandmother. For seven years, the evil woman reigned in the land. Then one day, Jehoiada called the notable and powerful men in the kingdom with whom he hatched a plan to install the young boy as king in continuation of the dynasty of David. He also gathered the congregation of the people together in the house of God where they pledged loyalty to the king. He armed the men, and strategically deployed them within and outside the house of God, to ward off intruders. Then, he brought out to the temple, Joash, the son of King Ahaziah, crowned him as king, and in line with the commandment of the Lord, delivered the written scriptures to him. Thereafter, Jehoiada and his sons, the priests, anointed Joash as king, and proclaimed: “God save the king.” The evil one is daily waging a fierce war against the elect. God has enlisted believers in the noble job of standing in the gap like the Levites. We must realize the seriousness of that assignment and delay no longer. God is depending on you today to save some souls. They are not in short supply. They cost collateral damage in societies. They are in government, work places, business arenas, and are also in the church of God. Those who give in to their lies are easily destroyed. From our text, Ahaziah, son and successor of Jehoram, and grandson of Jehoshaphat was made king over Judah. His reign, like that of his namesake of Samaria, was very brief, lasting but a year and characterised by idolatry and departure from the precept of God. Being related to the royal house of Israel through his mother Athaliah, the daughter of Jezebel and Ahab, he was fully in sympathy, politically and religiously with all the idolatry and witchcraft practised therein. Joram, the king of Israel, having been wounded in battle, returned to Jezreel to recuperate. Ahaziah also left the field of conflict in Gilead, and came to Jezreel for a conference with Joram. Meanwhile, the great uprising under Jehu had begun. Joram was slain. Ahaziah fled by way of the “house of the garden.” He was overtaken by Jehu’s soldiers and wounded in his chariot; but the stroke was not immediately fatal. Ahaziah escaped southward, and died on reaching Megiddo. His body was taken to Jerusalem and buried in the royal sepulcher there. In the multitude of evil counsellors there is destruction. Having such counsellors as Athaliah, the daughter of Omir, and the evil faculty of the idolatrous house of Ahab was a recipe for paralysis. No wonder Ahaziah did evil in the sight of the Lord. His counsellors kept him out of the ways of God until he met his untimely death. The anarchy, which followed the death of Ahaziah, greatly weakened the monarchy of Judah; but it was a necessary step in the purgation of the kingdom from the taint of Baal-worship. The counsel of the ungodly ruins many young persons when they are setting out in the world. Ahaziah gave himself up to be led by evil men. TOPIC: Don't Give Up "Friday 17, October 2014" *TEXT: LUKE 18:1-8* *"Key Verse: “And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary” (Luke 18:3)."* The story of Esther’s intervention on behalf of the Jews in Shushan and the result she got is a classic example of how determination and prayer can change the course of things. Esther’s uncle Mordicai had been marked for destruction in phase one of Haman’s plot. This was to be followed by a systematic destruction of the Jews thereafter. Although it was not customary for Esther to see the king at the time when the matter was playing out, she solicited the prayer of her people. And God made a way by moving the king to grant the queen’s petition. God is always willing to grant us our petition when we pray according to His will. In His earthly ministry, Jesus saw the need to talk about the possibilities of prayer. Not only that He taught others how to pray, He made prayer a major part of His ministry. He healed diseases and performed other miracles through the instrumentality of prayer. Even as He is presently at the right hand side of God, our Father, He still prays, making daily intercessions for us. Christ’s message to every member of His church is unmistakable. He desires that each of us pray with persistence. Prayer and faith are powerful weapons in the lives of believers. Those who lack prayer and are weak in faith cannot fulfil the whole will of God on earth; neither can they possess all that God has provided through Christ. Believers’ prayers are not limited to receiving healing, material blessings or claiming deliverance alone, they should dwell so much on spiritual blessings. Our personal prayer life shows the depth of our spirituality. Those who constantly ask for temporal things of life are shallow and carnal. Those who are always praying for self are selfish. In these last days, we cannot wholly overcome sin, sickness and Satan except we are prayerful. As we continue, we must ensure that we are not living in disobedience to the word of God and secret sin. Neglecting to show mercy can hinder our prayer. We must continue in supplication without getting discouraged until the answer comes. *THOUGHT FOR THE DAY": The Lord promises to answer our prayer."* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/ * |
TOPIC: In A Flash "Thursday 16, October 2014" *TEXT: LUKE 17:20-37* *"Key Verse: “Remember Lot's wife” (Luke 17:32)."* One year ago in one African country, there was a plane crash killing all the occupants. The saddest part of it all was that the plane had almost reached its destination from the capital city of that country. The sad incident took place when those on board were anxiously preparing to make calls in a matter of minutes from there, to inform their loved ones that they had landed. Meanwhile, many of the victims had some of their relatives waiting at the airport to pick them on their arrival. It was a terrible incident. So, it was for Lot’s wife, an unforeseen and immediate extinction from the face the earth. The sign-seeking Pharisees were asking the Lord about when the Kingdom of God should come. In their ignorance, they knew little or nothing about the various stages of the Kingdom. That is, the present spiritual aspect of the kingdom in which Christ reigns in the heart of every born again Christian; the future kingdom at the time of His millennial reign when the Lord shall reign physically on earth for a period of one thousand years of uninterrupted joy, peace and prosperity and the eternal kingdom of Christ when the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; when He shall reign for ever and ever (Revelation 11:15b). The Lord told these religious leaders what the condition of the world shall be at the time of His coming. Wickedness, worldliness and wantonness shall be prevalent just as it was in the days of Noah and in the days of Lot. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life brought destruction upon the people through the flood and fire in the days of old. Lot’s wife was lost through lust. The angels of mercy held her by the hand and brought her out of Sodom but she looked back, contrary to divine instruction and she became a pillar of salt! In spite of all the special privileges she enjoyed, she was lost. She never knew trouble was lurking around for her. She looked back and her journey ended. The coming of the Lord is imminent. Everything happening in the world today points to the fact that the time is short. The necessity of salvation from sin and holiness of life cannot be overemphasised therefore. *"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Trusting in Jesus, that is all."* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/ * ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. TOPIC: Be Considerate "Wednesday 15, October 2014" *TEXT: JOB 31:13-23* *"Key verse: “If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate” (Job 31:21)."* In ancient times, slave owners, wealthy individuals, and people who held one authority or another were revered, feared and even dreaded because nobody had the right to challenge their actions whether just or unjust. In fact, they were sometimes regarded as gods. The situation is not totally different today as the privileged in society lords it over the poor. Today’s passage shows us a man who, though living in such a godless and cruel environment, exhibited virtues and godly character worthy of emulation by all contemporary believers. Job occupied such a position of privilege by virtue of his wealth and political status in his community. However, he regularly brought his actions under the mirror of justice and fairness, as well as clear conscience by subjecting himself to scrutiny and self-examination with regards to his relationships with those who were not so privileged. He was so filled with the fear of God that he refrained from getting involved in those inhuman and oppressive actions. As a commentator puts it, the destruction which God would bring upon those guilty of the crimes awed and restrained him. He could have escaped being arraigned before any earthly tribunal or human court of law, but he remembered that the eye of God was upon him and that he was the avenger of the fatherless and the widow. He was confident to put himself under the wrath of God if he had in any way maltreated his servants, despised the poor, neglected the fatherless, and cruel to those who deserved justice. The lesson for us therefore is to examine our relationships, actions and attitudes towards those who do not have the privileges or opportunities that we are enjoying. Being considerate and treating others as Christ would treat them will shield us from God’s wrath. *"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Charity suffereth long and is patient."* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/ * ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. TOPIC: Surrender All "Tuesday 14, October 2014" *TEXT: LUKE 17:1-10* *"Key verse: “So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do” (Luke 17:10)."* The service of God ought be mandatory. He is the Creator and we are His creatures. We ought to give the totality of our being and serve him unreservedly because He demands our all. This, indeed, should be the desire and heartcry of every child of God today because as the grace of faith grows, all other graces will grow with it, leading us to lay our all on the altar of sacrifice. Our passage today centres on the teaching of Jesus on the guilt and punishment for those causing offence in the Church and faith in God’s pardoning mercy that enables the believer to forgive offences. Jesus can increase our faith to deal with offences and also give the deep humility needed for faithful and continual service unto the Lord, our Master, Owner, Redeemer and Sustainer of our soul. Causing offences to the heavenly pilgrim is a great sin that all believers must avoid and watch against as this brings severe judgment from God. Offences come from within and without the Church. They manifest in various forms. Persecution causes injury to Christ’s little ones, thereby bringing discouragement. Corruption of the truth of God’s word hinders growth, commitment and love for God in the heart and life of new converts. The worst form of offences are from those that profess Christ but live unholy lives within the church. Another is double standard and it weakens the spiritual state of the little ones. Our daily prayer should be that we would not be a source of offence in the Church of the living God. In like manner, all our service to God must be carried out in love and deep humility for Him who first loved us with an everlasting love. We ought to make the end of one service the beginning of another as appointed us by our Master and Lord. Evangelising the sinner, restoring backsliders, and edifying the saints will enable us to build up the Body of Christ. *"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: After we have done His will, He’ll say, well done."* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/ * ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. TOPIC: Examine Yourself "Monday 13, October 2014" *TEXT: JOB 31:33-40* *"Key Verse: “If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain; If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life” (Job 31:38,39)."* It is said that clear conscience fears no accusation. Whatever we do as believers, our conscience must be pure. This is the gist of our text today. In his reflections over the flood of calamities that had befallen him, Job had continued to search himself, asking questions where he must have gone wrong to attract the afflictions. Since his persecution began, he has continued to receive miserable visitors, who claimed to be his friends. They also claimed to have come to commiserate with him. But their uncharitable and unguarded utterances, rather than soothe Job’s aching nerves, pierced him more like deadly arrows. They had serially accused Job of unrighteousness, the consequence of which, according to them, had been the avalanche of his afflictions. Remember, Job had, in a single swoop, lost all his cattle, children and other material wealth and was bodily afflicted with an unknown skin disease. But, in all these, he maintained his integrity. He was sure that the righteous God does not dispense unrighteous judgment. His confidence in God did not wane even at the darkest hour of his life. Job’s reflection of his dealings with God encouraged him; and it is a challenge to every believer. Believers must realize that there are many afflictions that come when they hide their iniquities or cover their transgressions as Adam did. Are you enmeshed in dirty deals, contracts or other messy and questionable transactions? You must maintain clean hands and pure conscience to enable you stand boldly in the days of trouble. Believers must also borrow a leaf from Job’s consistent life of righteousness even when circumstances dictate otherwise, knowing that cross-bearing and ‘light afflictions’ are the hallmarks of true discipleship. *"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: He who goes to equity must go with clean hands."* *Higher Everyday for Youths - Link: http://highereveryday.dclmhq.org/ * ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below.
