Daily Manna: Numbering For Pride

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 21:9-17

KEY VERSE: “Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee” (1 Chronicles 21:10).

When it came to hardwork, job knowledge and versatility, only few in the company stood any chance against Mr. Nath. He had been instrumental to a number of noteworthy innovations in the sales/marketing division, resulting in progressively higher market share and bigger profits. But this day, the Board of Directors had called him and given him options of either termination of his appointment, demotion or transfer to a rural branch of their company. He had committed a grave marketing blunder due to over-confidence, and the loss to the company had been colossal.

David was a man after God’s heart. He had accomplished much and achieved great victories through God’s grace and support (2 Samuel 24:1). Sadly, he fell to Satan’s temptations in carrying out a census not commanded by God. What else could lie at the root of this exercise if not pride and vain glory? He was asked to choose one of three options, either of which carried devastating and grave consequences. He chose to fall into God’s hand, and, many people died. But God had compassion on him after he acknowledged his sin, desiring that the punishment be upon him and his father’s house only and not on the people.

Satan, our archenemy strikes at a time believers are most vulnerable. Our close walk with God does not provide us an immunity against temptation. But God can empower us to overcome them if we seek His face.

Let us compare every ‘leading’ with the word of God. This way, we will not be victims of avoidable disasters. This is a challenge believers must single-mindedly extirpate before it spells their fall.

TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:1-20

KEY VERSE: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind” (1 Corinthians 6:9).

Man’s entire being is to be regulated by sound moral principles. God in His unique wisdom knew that man’s freedom to choose his actions must be moderated by a stronger force, the force of God’s law, which if he obeys, his choice of action would not be his ruin.

The brethren in the church that was at Corinth displayed a lot of carnal behaviours. Disagreements among them were rife and they took easy recourse to the law courts. Litigations were very common and should not have been so. This is because it is doubtful whether the unbelieving court official’s could adjudicate in matters brought before them with appropriate godly wisdom.

Man, as a free moral agent, must choose to honour God. Moreover, believers have a binding duty to preserve their body and stay away from sin for the purpose of inheriting God’s kingdom. Sinners may make a joke of hell and heaven. Yet, the truth remains unflagging that “it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

The escape route is still open to all. Today, “if you will hear his voice, harden not your heart.” The door of salvation is still open. Do not mortgage an endless eternity for the brief so-called enjoyment of sin today. Christ is still receiving sinful men and women and He will receive you if only you will come to him now in repentance.

Daily Manna: A Fatal Request

TEXT: 1 KINGS 2:12-25

KEY VERSE: “And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah…God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life” (1 Kings 2:22,23).

Jackson was not a diligent and conscientious worker. His appraisal ratings had been dwindling as he had been denied promotion for three consecutive years. He decided to stand election as the secretary of the House Union and won. As soon as he won, he summoned a general meeting with the sole agenda that any employee who had remained on one grade should be automatically promoted to the next grade regardless of his or her appraisal rating. But the management refused to sign, convinced that it was a bad scheme.

In our text, Adonijah had approached Bathsheba, his stepmother to make a request of taking over their father, David’s last wife, Abishag, from king Solomon. But Solomon was able to decode that Adonijah’s motive to marry their father’s last mistress was tantamount to claiming the throne. Absalom, his elder brother, had carried out a similar plot against their father (2 Samuel 16:20-23). Solomon ordered Adonijah’s execution, his co-conspirator also lost his life. The priest, Abiathar, a sympathizer of Adonijah, was sacked from office. This marked the end of the priesthood of Eli’s house.

People who try to get what cannot be theirs legitimately will always end-up disastrously as Adonijah and Absalom. This is perhaps one major reason some assemblies break up into factions because of inordinate ambitions.

When God calls, He equips, guides and directs. If you think your boss is blocking your chances, wait patiently for God’s time. Just “a little while, he that shall come will come” (Hebrews 10:37). Never attempt to go ahead of God. Wait for the fullness of time.

Daily Manna: An Ungodly Command

TEXT: ACTS 4:13-22

KEY VERSE: “And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus” (Acts 4:18).

A national newspaper in Nigeria in its July 24, 2013 edition, published a story of the suspension and expulsion of a number of students by a college for issues that bordered on praying, among others. Apparently, the principal of the school had become uncomfortable with their prayers and fellowship for reasons that were difficult to fathom.

A striking miracle had taken place in Jerusalem as a 40 year-old man, lame from his mother’s womb, had by the Spirit of God, been made to walk. The reaction of the Jewish leaders was both curious but understandable. They ought to have given thanks to God for the good done to the impotent man but they could not because the disciples had been with Jesus whom they had rejected. They acknowledged that “indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them (the unlearned and ignorant men) ...and we cannot deny it”. They therefore gave a ‘mild’ punishment to warn the disciples not to teach and preach in the name of Jesus.

It is worthy of note that the disciples confronted the Jewish leaders with such a stunning courage. This is a clear evidence of the baptism in the Holy Ghost. In many churches today, Holy Ghost baptism starts and ends with speaking in tongues while spectacular miracles are on the decline. Some not-well-informed church leaders insist that miracle-working power ceased after the age of the apostles. This cannot be true when we remember what God is doing, even in our own contemporary period.

The Lord has need of bold and courageous preachers, leaders and pastors who can stand up to evangelical challenges and say like Peter and John, “We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard”; “we ought to obey God rather than men.”

Daily Manna: Sons Of Belial!

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 2:12-19

KEY VERSE: “Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD” (1 Samuel 2:12).

The nation of Israel regarded the office of the priest as a sacred one and held it in high esteem and reverence. The holder of the office was regarded no less and was acknowledged as the cherished oracle of God. The priest was to be the epitome of moral excellence as everything about him was to point the people to their duties and obligations to God.

The description of Eli’s sons as the sons of Belial meant they were worthless, wicked and wild. “Wherefore the sin of the young men was great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD” (verse 17). Yet, they continued to minister in God’s house to the knowledge of their father the priest who did nothing about it.

The sacredness of God’s house lies in the righteous and holy conduct of the leaders and worshippers. Eli’s sons committed horrendous evils, of which the penalty was death (Numbers 15:22- 31). Thus, Eli gave himself out as a partial, selfish compromiser, who set personal considerations above God’s commandments.

Those who hold priestly and leadership positions in the church should do so in obedience to the commandment of God and the spiritual demands of their office. We dare not talk of the criminal boldness of Eli’s sons who could not emulate the sparkling conduct of young Samuel where we are equally guilty of same misconducts. Moreover, pastors and leaders are to take heed that they do not tolerate or attempt to cover sins simply because the culprits are their children, relations or friends. The consequence of Eli’s dumb attitude was great. “Behold the days come that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thine father’s house that there shall not be an old man in thine house forever” (verse 31). Leaders and workers beware!

TEXT: JUDGES 1:9-15

KEY VERSE: “And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife” (Judges 1:12).

“If attempting a task is dangerous; if it has never been done, I will think how it can be done if it will save a soul”, so remarked a Christian speaker whose intent was to stir up the fearful hearts of his audience who were unwilling to rise up and make needed decisions important for their souls and those of others. Challenges help draw out the latent energy in every man. Without challenges, the innate qualities and strength on the inside of man are left redundant and uncharted.

Caleb was a man well respected in the land. He had great inheritance among the people because he followed the Lord with great courage. The name of Caleb’s daughter is Achsah and the man that loved to have Achsah as wife was Othniel. Caleb wanted to be sure Othniel truly loved Achsah. As it was commonly done in ancient times, he challenged the suitor to the dangerous task of fighting the Canaanite city of Kirjath-sepher to take it. Afterall, love that would not attempt hard tasks and that would run away from danger is nothing but feeble. Induced by the promise of having Achsah as wife, Othniel rose up, conquered the city and she was given to him.

The challenge we receive in the Word of God to love the Lord our God with all our hearts and strength (Luke 10:27) demands more than a show of fleeting emotion of human affection.

Our love for God is shown in toils we are ready to make in our obedience to His Word. His promise of eternal life with Him in heaven should serve as an incentive to brace up for any persecution, trial and temptation that may come our way as we journey on!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: He cannot indeed be called a captain who has never fought a battle.

Daily Manna: Born Like No Other!

TEXT: MATTHEW 1:18-25

KEY VERSE: “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 1:20).

There are many things that made the birth of Christ very unique. It was foretold many years before He was born and every detail was fulfilled as accurately as they were predicted. His birth made angels sing, drew the attention of shepherds, brought wise men from the east and unsettled powerful monarchs. His coming changed the times and seasons such that the world’s dating system changed.

But the most outstanding aspect of His birth was that it was virgin. This truth is revealed in our text today. Joseph was surprised to find his fiancé, Mary, pregnant. Unable to bear this, he decided to break the relationship. It took the intervention of God’s angel to make him understand that Mary’s pregnancy was divinely arranged. She was carrying the would-be Saviour of the world.

Denying Christ’s virgin birth would be denying His deity and sinless nature. The implication of this would be that Christ was not qualified to die for, and be the Saviour of the world. But thank God, we know that the fact of His virgin birth is undeniable. Jesus is that Seed of the woman who alone was qualified to bruise the head of the serpent. And that was exactly what He did on the cross of Calvary.

Believing in the doctrine of the virgin birth of Christ is key to believing His death, burial and resurrection. There is no way one can be saved and benefit from His vicarious death except through these. He alone saves from sin and the consequences of it - sickness, disease, satanic yoke, oppression, death and eternal damnation in hell. His mission is to “save His people from their sins.” He had no other mandate than this. If you will believe Him today, He will save you completely.

New Haven, Connecticut Rabbi Noah Muroff bought a desk he found listed on Craigslist and ended up discovering a bag filled $98,000 cash stuffed inside the purchase. Rabbi Noah told WTNH News 8 that when he got the piece of office furniture home, "The desk didn’t fit into this office by fraction of an inch.” He and his wife attempted to take the hinges off his office door, but that didn’t help. So they unscrewed the desktop and noticed something unusual. "Behind the drawers there is this plastic bag, like a shopping, I’m talking about. And in that bag, I could already see through the bag, there’s it looks like a hundred dollar bill,” said Rabbi Noah. He continued, "We open it up and it's full of cash. We count it up and there's $98,000 cash sitting in the bag…Right away my wife and I sort of you know looked at each other and said, ‘We can't keep this money.’"

The Muroffs knew that the money belonged to the original desk owner, who said that she bought the furniture from Staples and assembled it herself. So Rabbi Noah called her and explained his find. The original owner, identified only as “Patty,” was speechless on the other end of the phone only able to say, "Ohmy gosh, because I... oh my God." Vosizneias.com reported that Patty knew she stored the money she inherited, in the desk, but she was unable to find it when it fell behind the desk’s filing drawer. She assumed that the money was somewhere else in her home when she couldn’t locate it and sold the desk never thinking it still contained her nest egg.

Rabbi Noah, a father of four young children and also a ninth grade Rabbi at the Yeshiva of New Haven, brought his entire family along when he returned the money, believing it was an opportunity to teach his kids a lesson about honesty and truth. When they arrived, Patty refunded the $150 purchase price of the desk and also insisted that the rabbi accept reward money. She was overwhelmed with the family’s good deed and wrote a note saying, “I cannot thank you enough for your honesty and integrity. I do not think there are too many people in this world that would have done what you did by calling me,” ending the note, “I will be forever grateful.”

Daily Manna: Loyalty In All Seasons

TEXT: JOSHUA 1:12-18

KEY VERSE: “And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go. According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses” (Joshua 1:16,17).

People usually put up different reactions when there is a change, particularly in leadership. While some are excited with the change and are ready to move on with the new leader, some are cold, reserved and not too keen to move along. They prefer to wait and watch, not being too sure what the change would evoke. Change is inevitable and we must learn to quickly adapt to it especially when it is brought about by God.

The response of the children of Israel to the charge of Joshua as he assumes the new leadership role after Moses is most challenging. They all, with one voice, pledged their undivided loyalty to Joshua. They must have seen his appointment as divine and must have realised that their corporate success in possessing the Promised Land depended on their accepting the divinely appointed leader and rallying round him. They must have learned valuable lessons from their history and by experience, known how costly and damaging rebellion and disunity was. To be able to confront the more organised and experienced armies of the enemy nations, they knew they needed all the support they could get from God and their leader.

We must learn to accept change when God decides to bring it about. Rebelling against God’s choice will only be to our hurt. And in accepting the new leader, we must not make the mistake of trying to compare his gifts and leadership style with those of the previous leader. He may not have as much gift as the past leader, but he has a divine mandate to accomplish in your life. We are not just helping him to succeed when we do this; we are equally helping ourselves to reach our goal of the Promised Land.

Daily Manna: On Your Guard Please!

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 21:1-8

KEY VERSE: “And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel” (1 Chronicles 21:1).

When an avowed enemy suddenly turns to behave nicely towards you as a friend, you need to be more careful because he definitely has something dangerous up his sleeves! If you become so relaxed as to let down your guards, you won’t know when he will deal the deadly blow on you. One thing Christians must know about life’s battles and our arch enemy, the devil, is that he never gives up easily and that he employs very cunning devices.

David was very close to the end of his life and ministry. He had seen many battles and emerged victorious over them all. But the devil never gave up on him. He cornered him in a very subtle and unsuspecting way. He came up with the idea that David should take the census of the nation. He must have advanced different seemingly convincing reasons to make David do this, such that David turned down the opposition of Joab and his counsellors. Satan’s target was not just David, but the whole nation of Israel. David fell for this carrot and Israel suffered for it.

Now, nothing on the surface is wrong with taking a census. And indeed, this was not the first time this would be done. But then, everything is wrong with whatever idea Satan is suggesting to you. You need to check up your heart very sincerely when an idea comes to you. What is the real motive behind it? It may appear nice, harmless and laudable on the surface but if the hidden motive is to advance pride and selfish interests, then it must be noted that everything is wrong with the idea.

Safeguard yourself from Satan’s cunning onslaught. Close-up the door of your heart to any of his suggestions. Be open to God and the wise counsels of His children so as to overcome all the wicked darts of the devil.

Daily Manna: Between Substance And Shadow

TEXT: ACTS 4:1-12

KEY VERSE: “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead...” (Acts 4:8,10).

It is not difficult to find, as you go from one assembly to the other, Christians who profess to have been baptized in the Holy Ghost. What is however very disturbing is that many of these Christians seem not to have any other evidence of the experience other than speaking in tongues. Their lives are empty, dry, fearful and shallow.

Peter and John in our text had been arrested on account of the undeniable and spectacular healing of the lame man at the temple gate. They were questioned as to the authority and power behind the miracle. It is interesting to see Peter who once cringed with fear and couldn’t stand up for Christ even before a maid, now boldly declaring the gospel with boldness. Something had happened to him! The Holy Ghost had come and all fear was gone!

When we truly have the baptism of the Holy Ghost, we will speak in tongues. It will not be a dry, listless and empty gibberish but a divinely inspired language! Far beyond that, we will become more bold and fearless in the preaching of the gospel with greater effectiveness. TEXT: ACTS 4:1-12

KEY VERSE: “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead...” (Acts 4:8,10).

It is not difficult to find, as you go from one assembly to the other, Christians who profess to have been baptized in the Holy Ghost. What is however very disturbing is that many of these Christians seem not to have any other evidence of the experience other than speaking in tongues. Their lives are empty, dry, fearful and shallow.

Peter and John in our text had been arrested on account of the undeniable and spectacular healing of the lame man at the temple gate. They were questioned as to the authority and power behind the miracle. It is interesting to see Peter who once cringed with fear and couldn’t stand up for Christ even before a maid, now boldly declaring the gospel with boldness. Something had happened to him! The Holy Ghost had come and all fear was gone!

When we truly have the baptism of the Holy Ghost, we will speak in tongues. It will not be a dry, listless and empty gibberish but a divinely inspired language! Far beyond that, we will become more bold and fearless in the preaching of the gospel with greater effectiveness. OliverPin: Who wants to buy twitter shares there? Lol. Brokers won't sell you shares, its the company that will do that through agents like banks.. They made loss and now they went public, they need ur money to survive and trust me they'll always win. they initially planned $17 but ended up starting with $26 it sky rocketed to $45... We could see it move high and then otondos will buy. Then they will crash it..... Its a set up, facebook started with a bigger IPO, they started small so yall little investors will buy and make some cash but not for too long. TD Ameritrade is allowing investors to express interest in the owning Twitter shares, although, at this time it cannot disclose how many shares it will get. If you're a customer of Fidelity, the brokerage firm was allowing customers to express interest in investing in Twitter up through the cutoff on Monday.

•Buying through a mutual fund. Many large technology mutual funds will probably be offered Twitter shares at the IPO price. Since the shares haven't been sold yet, mutual fund companies have not yet disclosed their plans, so it's more or less a guessing game
