Daily Manna: Between Love And Fire

Friday 06, September 2013

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 4:14-24

KEY VERSE: “For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God” (Deuteronomy 4:24).

One of the “great awakening” preachers once said, “If the architect of a house had one plan and the contractor had another, what conflicts would there be! How many walls would have to come down, how many doors and windows would need to be altered before the two could harmonise!” Of the building of life, God is the Architect, and man is the contractor. God has one plan, and man has another. Is it strange that there are clashes and collisions?

Moses, in his valedictory exhortation to the nation of Israel, reiterated the need for absolute compliance to the will of God, to be able to continually enjoy His blessings and provisions in the promised land. Specifically in this passage, he zeroed in on the sin of idol-worship. God had earlier on Mount Sinai, given Israel the “ten commandments” (Exodus 20:1-17), which is the summary of His will, the divine blueprint, or national constitution. Commandment one and two forbade the worship of other gods and the erection of any “graven image” with the aim of worshipping them.

Moses, at this time, reminded Israel about the danger of taking God and His promises for granted. He told them that God was faithful to His promises of preservation, protection and provision. Yet, the ball was in the court of Israel to reciprocate with implicit obedience to the commandments. Failure to keep their side of the bargain would make God to cancel His promises to them.

Today, Christians are busy erecting idols in many shapes and forms. Anything that is esteemed highly than love for God is idolatry. The twin idols of materialism and worldly pleasures are wreaking havoc in many Christian circles. The two are the “thorns of thistles” that choke the spiritual lives of many Christians today. Like their counterparts in the Old Testament, believers are exhorted to repent of every form of idol worship and syncretism before it is too late.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: He who is the God of love is also a consuming fire.

Daily Manna: Chiefest Among Ten Thousand

Thursday 05, September 2013

TEXT: SONG OF SOLOMON 5:9-16

KEY VERSE: “My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand” (Song of Solomon 5:10).

The world has gotten so used to the pop-culture ideal of love that it has lost the true essence of love. The entertainment industry is awash with this species of love with all its unrealistic images that have led to massive deception, frustration and disappointment. That not-withstanding, love remains one of the most potent forces that affect our lives.

The episode in today’s text concerning a spouse and her bridegroom illustrates the compelling power of pure love. The spouse, here referred to as the “fairest among women”, was in search of her beloved who had sought admission into her house but left before she could come out to receive him. She combed the city seeking her beloved and suffered undue maltreatment in the process. But her affection towered above anything she had to put up with. As the unsympathetic watchmen failed her, she turned to the daughters of Jerusalem to help in the search. The intensity of her passion aroused their curiosity as they wondered what was so special about her beloved. She thus had the opportunity to describe his elegance with vivid and superlative language.

This account is symbolic of the relationship that exists between the Church and Christ, her Bridegroom. Of all the institutions in the world, the Church is the most excellent, being espoused to the King of kings and Lord of lords. “The love of Christ, which passeth knowledge” should elicit the same degree of reciprocal love in us so much that we are willing to suffer persecution and torture for Him. We should also be ready to get the wondering world develop interest in and seek after the most excellent and lovely Saviour and Lover of our soul.

The world may not comprehend the whole beauty and sweetness in Christ, but those who have tasted same must demonstrate it by a passionate devotion to Him in fellowship and service.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Seek Christ with passion if you truly love Him.

Daily Manna: Broken Yokes And Burst Bonds

Wednesday 04, September 2013

TEXT: NAHUM 1:11-15

KEY VERSE: “For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder” (Nahum 1:13).

Mexico was once under the cruel rule of the Aztecs, a race of warriors who forcefully controlled the long standing inhabitants of the region. The Aztecs so delighted in warfare that when a boy was born, his umbilical cord was cut off and dried and then buried on a battle field signifying that his life would be dedicated to warfare. They were trained not only to conquer but to take prisoners of war that they later sacrificed during religious festivities. But that race was eventually conquered by a Hernán Cortés, a Spanish explorer who made their powerful king, Montezuma II a prisoner and was later killed during a revolt.

Assyria with its fortified capital city (Nineveh) and great military might boasted a similar tyranny, especially against Judah during the era of King Hezekiah. Their dreaded king, Sennacherib, through his spokesman Rabshakeh went so far as to blaspheme the Lord of hosts. By this degree of arrogance, they pitched themselves against God and earned His wrath. On the other hand, God proclaimed the deliverance of penitent Judah.

It was, indeed, a remarkable experience for the people of Judah whose temporal corrective affliction God had allowed. God assured them, “Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more... for now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.” The good tidings of Nineveh’s destruction would soon cause celebration in Judah. But for Assyria, it was a full and fatal retribution for their arrogance and cruelty (2 Kings 19:35). Nineveh was eventually destroyed.

God’s promises and provision for His people are of no private interpretation. He has undertaken to protect His own. When the enemy, with his intimidating weapons, is threatening and attempting to rubbish your faith in God, be assured of divine intervention.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Those who attempt to touch the apple of God’s eye will have their fingers burnt.

Daily Manna: Learn From The Past

Tuesday 03, September 2013

TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-12

KEY VERSE: “Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted” (1 Corinthians 10:6).

It was reported not too long ago that the centrally administered examination into universities in Nigeria recorded a mind-boggling failure. Yet, many of the questions set yearly are said to be similar or even a repetition of previous years’. Obviously, candidates who fail to study and learn from past question papers always join the league of those who fail. And those who fail to learn and take warning from past experiences are doomed to relive same.

The passage for today is a sober reflection of the wilderness experience of the children of Israel on their way to Canaan. It reviews the pathetic backsliding of the chosen race into common sin, fringe religions and perverted cultures of heathen nations. Miracles of provisions, protection and divine presence were a common experience for Israel. Strangely, they easily slid back into sexual immorality, idolatry, murmuring, carnality, revelry, evil desires, pleasure-seeking and presumption. Many of them died summarily in the wilderness.

Israel’s experience is a lesson for present-day believers. Disobedience to God’s word creates a chance for Satan to gain an in-road into one’s life. Many believers give way to temptations as if it were impossible for them to resist. If we cannot control ourselves and overcome those things that destroy unbelievers and make them miserable, haven’t we then received the grace of God in vain?

Are you born again? Hold fast to that which you have received. Do not make natural weakness or infirmity of the mind an excuse to go back to sin. Things doubtful and tempting must not be toyed with; flee every appearance of evil to avoid a sorrowful end like the children of Israel. Those who believe that they can sincerely live as believers without turning away from unrighteous behaviour and conduct should take warning from God’s judgments upon Israel.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: There is no eternal security for sinning Christians.

Daily Manna: Trust That Works

Monday 02, September 2013

TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 4:1-12

KEY VERSE: “And when Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled” (2 Samuel 4:1).

There was a beautiful building at the centre of a metropolitan city. It was a master piece, of the best architectural design, suspended on a major pillar and fortified with the best security gadgets of the day. Suddenly, the main pillar of the building collapsed due to uneven settlement under the pillar area. Great was the ruin of this magnificent edifice.

Ishbosheth was the fourth son of King Saul and the last member of his family to reign in Israel. Abner, the commander of the army in Israel was a strong pillar and backbone behind the reign of lshbosheth until they disagreed over Saul’s concubine. The death of Abner weakened the position of the king. Two of his captains (Baanah and his brother Rechab), sons of Rimmon came to the king’s palace at noon, while lying on his bed. They beheaded Ishbosheth and brought his head to David in Hebron, expecting to be rewarded. David however had them exterminated for their wickedness. Ishbosheth met an untimely death because he put all his trust and hope on Abner, the strong man of Israel.

People who put their trust in man will always be disappointed. When we have problems or challenges of life, it is good to seek help. But we must never bypass God or His directives to us as contained in the Holy Bible. Abner had replaced the position of God in the heart of Ishbosheth. The strong man, so to say, became an idol for him to rely on. How unwise this turned out to be. Idols such as money, fame or success can be seductive if we rely on them. Wealth and luxury bring a false sense of security.

To avoid temporal disappointment and eternal regret, sinners must repent, put their trust in the finished work of Christ and believe the gospel. Believers must always put their trust in God and His unchanging word. On no account should the counsel of mere men subvert or replace the immutable dictates of God’s wisdom.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The Lord knows them that trust in Him.

Daily Manna: Total Obedience Demanded

Sunday 01, September 2013

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 4:1-13

KEY VERSE: “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you” (Deuteronomy 4:2).

When Leonard Wood, a physician who served as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, visited the King of France, he got a special invitation to have a dinner with him the next day. A man of innate humility, Wood gladly honoured the invitation without formal expression. But the king, who was taken aback when he saw him, asked: “Why, Sir Leonard? I did not expect to see you. How is it that you are here?” Wood was surprisingly embarrassed and queried: “Did not your majesty invite me to dine with you?” The king replied: “Yes, but you did not answer my invitation.” Then, Wood uttered: “A king’s invitation is never to be answered, but to be obeyed.”

This is the thrust of the matter - total obedience to God’s commandment. Moses knew the heartbeat of God and he made it clear to the Israelites. He reminded them of an event in their history which precisely was recorded in Numbers chapter 25, where people strayed away from God and started worshipping a false god called Baal at Peor. Some of the men went to commit whoredom with the Moabite women. Consequently, many died as a result of the plague the Lord sent among them; while others were killed by the priests. But those who did not worship Baal were kept alive.

To avoid the reoccurrence of such a catastrophe, Moses implored the Israelites to obey God’s commandment without exception, maintaining that it was only then that they would remain alive in their new country. Their obedience, he equally emphasised, would prove to other nations that they had a great God.

The passage is instructive because even though the Israelites were a God-chosen people, God could not compromise His commandment. Today, many people delight themselves in the euphoria of being members of one Christian denomination or the other without any clear conviction of living a holy life. We should bear in mind that obedience to God cannot be compromised.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Obedience begets blessings.

Daily Manna: Suffering For Christ date_replace

Saturday 31, August 2013

TEXT: 2 CORINTHIANS 4:7-18 KEY VERSE: “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17).
In 1900, during China’s Boxer Rebellion, some insurgents stormed a mission school and captured 100 Christians who were students. Those enemies of the gospel blocked all the gates to the mission station and left only one open. In front of that gate, which was left open, they placed a cross flat on the ground and asked the Christians, one after the other, to trample it under their feet. Anyone who did that would be permitted to regain his or her freedom and life, but anyone who refused would be shot. Those students became terribly frightened. The first seven of them trampled upon the cross under their feet and were allowed to go free. But the eighth student, a young girl, refused to commit the sacrilegious act. She knelt beside the cross and prayed for strength. Then she arose, moved carefully around the cross and went out to face the firing squad. The remaining ninety-two students, strengthened by her courage and example, followed her to the firing squad. They suffered for Christ. Paul the Apostle, in our text, equally captures the essence which he describes as light affliction. To him and from experience, Christians will suffer persecution. If they are able to overcome, they will secure an eternal weight of glory that outweighs their suffering for Christ. Therefore, we should not focus on things that are of temporal value. Rather, our attention should be on things that have eternal relevance. Studies have revealed that since the death of Jesus Christ, over 2000 years ago, 43 million Christians have died as martyrs. Over 50 per cent of these were in the last century alone. More than 200 million Christians face persecution each day, 60 per cent of whom are children. Everyday, over 300 people are killed for their faith in Jesus Christ. So, suffering for Christ is not a new thing. The odd thing is to suffer for wrong-doing or sin. God can never excuse sin. If you must suffer, let it be for righteousness. THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Persecution is the hammer which casts the true believer into eternal shape.

Daily Manna: Praying Aright

"Friday 30, August 2013"

*TEXT: PSALM 57:1-11*

*"KEY VERSE: “I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. He shall send from heaven, and save from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth” (Psalm 57:2,3)."*
Charles Spurgeon says, “a true prayer is an inventory of needs, a catalogue of necessities, an exposure of secret wounds, a revelation of hidden poverty.” When we pray, we make our desires known, express our helplessness and request for divine intervention in otherwise perplexing situations. And we receive answers to prayers when we pray aright.
In our text, the Psalmist earnestly sought for God’s intervention as he was confronted with a formidable situation in which only God could draw him out. He found himself inexorably drawn into a quagmire of temptation and sin in which he required the help and mercy of God to overcome. “I will cry unto God most High;” he says, “unto God that performeth all things for me.”
From time immemorial, man has attempted to hide his moral and material poverty by resorting to self-management in handling the challenges of life; but the reality has always been one of disappointment and frustration. No man can do without God, no matter how ingenious or powerful he pretends to be. No man is immune from the activities of Satan, and the evil machinations of demons and agents of the devil. This reality has made the need for earnest prayers more compelling. No true Christian can successfully triumph over temptations, trials and tactics of the enemy without deploying the enormous power that comes through prayer.
Intimate relationship with God along with confidence and faith in His promises will readily hasten His response to our prayers. Besides, while many of us are quick to pray, we often forget to praise God as the psalmist teaches us in this circumstance. Let us therefore learn to combine earnest prayers with sincere praise. This is the secret of praying aright, and praying for results.
*THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Earnest prayer and praise often move the hands of God.*

Daily Manna: Beware Of A Vengeful Spirit

"Thursday 29, August 2013"

*TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 3:31-39*

*"KEY VERSE: “And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner... but David knew it not. And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there...” (2 Samuel 3:26,27)."*

Having served king Saul faithfully as a valiant army general, Abner came to David on terms of peace and reconciliation. Unknown to him and David, Joab, David’s general would have none of Abner’s influence in the rising kingdom of David. Apart from the hatred and animosity he harboured against him for killing Asahel, his younger brother, Joab was envious of the possibility of Abner taking over his position as David’s military chief. For clearly, Abner was more experienced.
After David had sent Abner away in peace, Joab sent messengers after him and brought him back without the knowledge of David. He spoke to him as a friend and pretended to be seeking a private audience with him, but he killed him.
There is danger in harbouring vengeance and seeking opportunity to retaliate. Though Joab was close to David, a man described as being after God’s heart, he refused to imbibe the godly nature and divine attributes in the life of David. Clearly, salvation and righteousness cannot be transferred; it is a personal experience appropriated through faith in the redemptive work of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Again, Abner was very naïve; he was not discreet enough to have noticed the subtlety of Joab in wanting to get rid of him. How we need to pray before accepting any offer of friendship from people that may harbour other ulterior motives against us. Furthermore, David demonstrated a rare leadership quality by leading his people to mourn the death of this great man.
Finally, Joab incurred a severe rebuke and retributive justice that haunted him to his grave. Beware of sowing the wind so that you do not, in the end, reap the whirlwind.
*THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Evil will always catch-up with the vengeful and the unforgiving.*

Daily Manna: He Is Faithful

Wednesday 28, August 2013

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 3:1-17

KEY VERSE: “So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining” (Deuteronomy 3:3).

Fear, anxiety and uncertainty about the future or enemies often becloud our knowledge of the promises and faithfulness of God. Clearly, as humans, we are limited in some respects, especially when we are confronted with the challenges of life.

The children of Israel had every reason to entertain fear considering their bitter experiences in the hands of Pharaoh, king of Egypt and several enemies that tried to frustrate their journey and progress towards the Promised Land. However, they had experienced God’s power in Egypt and in their crossing the Red Sea. Moses needed to remind them of God’s faithfulness to His promise. God had earlier pledged that He was going to give them victory in battle against Og. “So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining….” It was a complete routing of the enemies of God’s people.

Are you confronted with the challenges that seek to hinder you from getting to your own land of promise? Fear not. Repose your confidence and trust in God who has the power to win your battles for you. His promises are as sure as they are unimpeachable. God will always fight for you; so, hold your peace. Put your faith in God and in His unfailing promises. As you remain faithful to Him and do that which pleases Him, you can be sure of your daily victory in the battles of life.

Our faith and confidence in God must be accompanied with gratitude for His faithfulness, deeds of mercy and kindness to us, our families and church.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: God’s mercy and goodness never fail; they abide forever.

Daily Manna: Despising God’s Love

Tuesday 27, August 2013

TEXT: SONG OF SOLOMON 5:1-8

KEY VERSE: “I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer” (Song of Solomon 5:6).

God created everyone to love and be loved. The most beautiful expression of love can be found in the context of marriage.

The writer of the Song of Solomon is believed to be a man who had tasted both the good and the sour side of conjugal love. Though written in very strong poetic language that evokes passion, the spiritual import of the message must not be lost on us.

Bible Scholars agree that the narratives in the book depict the relationship between Christ and the Church and we see how this love plays out in our passage today. Christ is pictured as a true Lover, the passionate and caring Bridegroom who readily demonstrates His love for His bride, the Church (believers). It was that love that made Him to leave His throne in heaven for earth to seek and to save that which was lost. His earthly ministry was fully devoted to the expression of that love by the seaside, on the streets, in the wilderness, on the high seas, in the temple, in the palace, on the road to Golgotha, on the ‘hills far away where stood the old rugged cross’, in the tomb, at the resurrection, while ascending to heaven and even as He is now in heaven. From heaven to earth and from earth to heaven, Christ has continued to love His own with everlasting love.

Sadly, this manifestation of Christ’s love hardly makes a scratch on people’s conscience. They reject the salvation He procured through His death. People who refuse to get saved despite various entreaties from Christ and believers who receive the grace of God in vain will have themselves to blame for the eventual catastrophe.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Christ is still waiting for a loving embrace with the penitent.

Daily Manna: Stand In The Gap

Monday 26, August 2013

TEXT: PHILEMON 10-25

KEY VERSE: “I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me” (Philemon 10,11).

Asong writer scripted, “He forgives and forgets. Not as mortals forgive one another, but as Jesus forgives and forgets.”

Paul the apostle saw the need to write to Philemon about Onesimus who was once his servant. Onesimus had offended his master and ran away with some items of his property. But now converted, Paul wrote to plead for Onesimus. He was teaching him about restitution, and thus decided to send him back to his master for full reconciliation. While sending him back, Paul needed to impress it upon Philemon that Onesimus has become a changed person. He added that if Philemon desired, he (Paul) would pay whatever Onesimus might have taken away from him.

As we ponder over the passage today, there are many lessons therein. Paul did not tell Onesimus to continue in his new-found faith and forget about the events of the past. He did not hold back Onesimus to be an errand boy for him but decided to release him to reunite with his master. Paul was totally convinced of the salvation experience Onesimus was professing, and for this reason, he was not afraid to accept the responsibility of paying back whatever the young man must have stolen from his master. His personal commitment and assurance as contained in the letter he sent to Philemon through Onesimus must have encouraged the run-away servant to take the bold step of going back to his master.

What impact does our leadership/interaction have on young believers? Do they have enough confidence in us as to confide in us? Our firm but positive attitude to backsliders and sinners will always draw them closer to the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The quality of your life is measured by the value you add to other lives.

Daily Manna: Jehovah The Man Of War

Sunday 25, August 2013

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 2:26-37

KEY VERSE: “But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day” (Deuteronomy 2:30).

In our text, Moses recounted the goodness of God to Israel in the course of their journey from Egypt. He explained to the people that their movements were ordered by God. He recalled that in some instances, Israel overran their enemies who tried to ambush them or prevent them from passing through their territories. There were other times, like the case of Heshbon, where owners of the land vehemently refused Israel passage despite much plea. Those countries that denied them passage were crushed through divine help. That was what happened to Sihon, king of Heshbon. He must have deluded himself into thinking that he could forestall the move of God and His people. How foolish this turned out to be!

The Christian journey is like that of Israel from Egypt to Canaan. There are enemies on the way to hinder. The degree of opposition may differ: while some may not be so vicious, others might be ruthless. But no matter the presentation, believers must be ready at all times to listen to God on how to deal with each challenge.

Moses, despite the assault from Heshbon, was able to recount that “there was not one city too strong for us; the LORD our God delivered all unto us.” Be sure of this: every Goliath on your path will be eventually crushed because no one can successfully battle the Lord.

God is more than enough to contend with all enemies. Once we choose to serve Him faithfully and follow Him doggedly, His promise rings throughout history that: “I will make all thine enemies turn their backs on thee.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: We are more than conquerors through Christ.

Daily Manna: Total Victory

Saturday 24, August 2013

TEXT: ESTHER 8:1-10

KEY VERSE: “On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews’ enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her” (Esther 8:1).

It is dangerous to assume that the defeat of a chief enemy signifies the final end of a battle. There is the likelihood that there are other offsprings and kinsmen of such an enemy that could step in the shoes of their forebears.

Esther was well aware of this important fact and decided not to leave anything to chance. After the death of Haman, the number one enemy of Jews in Shushan, Esther knew that unless there was a reversal of the evil letters Haman had written and documented to destroy the Jews, some of his loyalists may try to push for the implementation of the wicked agenda someday. It was after the request was granted that the Jews were sure of total freedom in all the king’s provinces.

In a dangerous and wicked world, believers must possess the wisdom of God to survive the wiles of the wicked. Nothing must be taken for granted. Believers must think and act fast at all times, especially during trying moments. It must be understood that it is dangerous for saints to relax because they have just received one blessing or the other from the Almighty. Goliath and Pharaoh’s defeat may not spell total freedom for believers, unless their brothers are also subdued.

Believers must not take anything for granted. Esther worked to reverse the plot against the Jews even though Haman had died. Every evil letter written and signed against us must be reversed in Jesus’ Name. We must take nothing for granted. The believer must always be as watchful as he is prayerful till the end for total victory.

Daily Manna: A Definite Increase

"Friday 23, August 2013"*TEXT: JOB 8:1-10*

*"KEY VERSE: “Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase” (Job 8:7)."*

The beginning of an event does  not always spell or predict its eventual outcome. That a day begins gloomily can never indicate that the situation will be so all day long. For the believer, a morning of challenges does not always portend endless difficulties. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning”.
Although Job’s friend, Bildad the Shuhite accused him wrongly by presuming that the death of Job’s children was a result of their transgressions, he, however, gave a positive prophecy that was fulfilled in Job’s latter life. Job had been remonstrating over his calamities. He, as a man, had been wondering why the deluge of trials was coming his way. But he knew the source could not be from the Almighty. He was convinced that with the cordial relationship he was enjoying with God, the devil must be the harbinger of his ordeals.
Like Job, you may be going through hard times. And you may be derided by friends and relations over your adversity in the service of the Almighty. Yet, despondency is not the answer. The best approach is to give thanks to the Lord who counted you worthy to suffer for His name. Job was not in doubt of his relationship with the Creator. For this reason, he never panicked; he kept himself from uttering guile against the Lord Almighty.
How often do we accuse the Lord for problems that are influenced by the enemy, the devil? We need to understand that there is nothing committed to God that ever get lost. Job handed everything to God, his material wealth and his family. He never held anything back. Indeed, true to Bildad’s prophecy, Job’s latter end greatly increased.

*THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: He makes all things beautiful in His time.*

Daily Manna: Vengeance Is Not Yours

"Thursday 22, August 2013"

*TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 3:22-30*

*"KEY VERSE: “And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner” (2 Samuel 3:28). "*

God forbids retaliation. “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord” (Romans 12:19).  The long war between the house of David and that of Saul had resulted in the death of many young and vibrant soldiers. Asahel, brother to Joab, had been killed by Abner, commander of Saul’s army. The killing did not go down well with Joab, who was the leader of David’s army. He thereafter began to look for an opportunity to avenge the blood of Asahel. After the war, Abner had sought to reconcile with the house of David. He volunteered to surrender the troops under his command to David. A sweet accord was reached, but Joab did not buy into the peace move. He slew Abner without the knowledge of David. Joab decided to avenge the blood of Asahel in peace time. But that earned him a curse. David said: “Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue or that is a leper, or that falleth on the sword or that lacketh bread” (verse 29).
Though it’s painful to lose one’s sibling, Joab ought to have realized that his brother was killed during a conflict situation. He had every opportunity to avoid the curse he eventually brought upon himself and his posterity.
King David also manifested the attributes of a real man of God and the father of all Israel. He did not give place for sentiments. Although Joab had served him for many years, he did not justify his misdeed. Anger, vengeance and inordinate ambition were Joab’s waterloo. To avoid similar consequences, bend beneath the Cross today for cleansing from all inbred sins.
*THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Vengeance belongs to God.*
