Bode_George+yeoalA former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George, yesterday advised the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to handle pro-Biafran agitators with caution. Warning that Nigeria cannot survive another civil war, the politician said the government must not use force in dealing with the situation. George, who spoke at an event to mark his 70th birthday in Lagos on Monday, also begged the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to stop their protests. He said secession was not the answer to the problems of Nigeria, urging Igbo leaders and the group to hold talks with the government. George said, “I want to plead with the Biafran protesters to be patient and I urge them to tread softly. No nation goes to civil war twice and survives. We are still meandering to build nationhood. “Let us build this nation together. We must ensure that everyone has a sense of belonging. Sharing of resources and appointments should not be a winner-takes-all affair. Let us debate and deliberate over our affairs. Dismembering the system through protests and agitations is not the solution.” Lamenting the defeat of PDP in Lagos, George, said the party would have performed better had the presidency not empowered people who were not committed to the party. George recently returned to Nigeria after spending five months in London. SOURCE: http://www.afikpochicupdates.com/14089

Political and opinion leaders in the South-East, including state governors, on Sunday agreed to set up a committee to parley with pro-Biafran activists and the Federal Government over the ongoing agitation for Biafra. The decision was taken at a meeting of South-East Elders, which was convened by the state governors in Enugu. A communique issued after the meeting, which was also attended by members of the National Assembly, some former governors, and other elder statesmen from the zone, said the proposed committee would dialogue with the two major pro-Biafran groups – the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, and the Indigenous People of Biafra. MASSOB and IPOB are championing the ongoing agitation, which had led to massive protests in major cities of the South-East and South-South. The agitation was triggered by the detention of the leader of IPOB and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Reading a communique after the South-East Elders met for several hours at the Enugu State Government House, the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, said, “After a compassionate review of the recent MASSOB/IPOB agitation in the country, it was resolved that a committee be set up to dialogue with MASSOB/IPOB as well as with the Federal Government with a view to finding a lasting solution to the issue.” However, the communique did not say when the proposed committee would be set up. Okorocha added that the meeting resolved to send a delegation of South-East Elders to meet President Muhammadu Buhari over the “marginalisation” of the zone, as well as other outstanding socio-economic issues that hinder development in the region. “The elders also examined other issues including poor state of infrastructural facilities in the South-East, marginalisation in federal appointments and other socio-economic issues that impact on the economic development of the South-East and resolved to support the decision of the South-East Governors to set up an Economic Council and urged them to interface with the Federal Government on remedial measures. “A delegation of the Elders of the South-East was mandated to meet with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Okorocha, who read the communiqué said. He added that the meeting equally resolved that the governors should immediately set up a committee to address the “impasse on Ohanaeze leadership.” Ohanaeze-Ndigbo, the foremost pan-Igbo socio-political association, which is currently surrounded by a leadership crisis, was not represented as a body at the meeting. Two factions are claiming to be the authentic leadership of the association. MASSOB and IPOB were equally absent at the South-East Elders’ meeting. Interestingly, a faction of Ohanaeze, also on Sunday in Enugu, held a different meeting over the pro-Biafran agitation. The parallel meeting was attended by members of MASSOB and IPOB. At the meeting attended by Ohanaeze leaders, including the factional President-General, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey, the Secretary-General, Chief Joe Nwaorgu, and the President of the youth wing, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the association distanced itself from the meeting summoned by the governors. They also demanded Kanu’s immediate release from detention. Isiguzoro, in a text message sent to our correspondent during the course of the meeting, said the governors were only complementing Ohanaeze’s efforts towards resolving the issue. The Ohanaeze youth leader said a proper meeting to be summoned by the association’s highest decision making body, the Ime-Obi, would deliberate on the pro-Biafran agitation. “Ohanaeze have resolved that Nnamdi Kanu should be released. “The governors have missed the point. They are using cosmetic approach. “Ohanaeze will call Ime-Obi and the resolution of the governors is just to complement the efforts of Ohanaeze to reach out to MASSOB/IPOB to have their charter of demands,” Isiguzoro said in the text message. President Muhammadu Buhari has said those agitating for the division of the country should have a rethink, warning that they should not underrate the capability of the Federal Government to preserve and defend the territorial integrity of the country. Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the graduation ceremony of the Senior Executive Course 37 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State on Saturday, said the Presidency would not fold its arms and allow anyone to plunge the country into crisis. He said, “Government would not fold its arms and watch, while some individuals and groups create unnecessary tension in the country in the guise of seeking to break away from Nigeria. He said, “We need to build the civic capacity to defeat the false and dangerous premises and assumption of violent extremism. Never again should we allow mindless violence inspired by false and evil precepts to threaten our national security.” The President, while reiterating the determination of his administration to end all forms of terrorism in the country, said, “Let me again call on persons or group in the country who have some grievances or disaffection to submit to peaceful and democratic means of expressing themselves.” He said the military had gradually degraded the ability of Boko Haram to hold the country to ransom. He added, “Let me reiterate that Boko Haram terrorism as well as their ideology will soon be defeated and consigned to the dust bin of history.” Buhari said the more crucial task confronting his administration was the task of defeating the false and evil ideology of violence extremism. He admitted that there were educational setbacks in the country but said his administration would tackle the challenges in the education sector as a means of ensuring better future for Nigeria’s younger generation. He said, “While accepting that our educational system is in a dangerously parlous state, the solutions are obvious, even if not easy. We have to focus on early child education, retrain teachers, ensure that our curricular will prepare our children for the 21st century.” Buhari charged the institute to come up with a set of proposals for the comprehensive study of the scourges, with a view to forestalling future occurrence. The President said, “As this government is already doing, we need to ensure that policy is always rooted in the needs and conditions of the millions of our people who are extremely poor and who do not stand a chance. If we continue to drive policy only on GDP figures without attention to job creation, poverty reduction and opportunities created for the majority to live decently.” PUNCH SOURCE:http://www.afikpochicupdates.com/13983 |

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Charles Soludo has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to abandon what he termed the ‘old Buharinomics’ if he must bring about the desired change in the country. Soludo made the call while delivering a lecture at the Realnews third annual lecture in Lagos on Thursday which he titled ‘Avoiding the mistakes of the last Buharinomics’. Soludo said there seemed to be a perception of the sense of nostalgia, a thing about command and control regime battling with what is required in a competitive market economy worldwide. He said: ‘the element of the old ‘Buharinomics’ that we need to change include Fix exchange rate, fix capital control, import bans and forex rationing”. The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has confirmed that 274 Nigerian pilgrims died in the Hajj stampede, while 44 are missing and two are still receiving treatment in a Saudi hospital. Dr. Saleh Okenwa, Commissioner Planning, Research Statistic Information and Library Service (PRSILS) of the commission, told journalists on Monday in Abuja the Saudi Arabian Government should be blamed for the commission’s inability to give accurate account of Nigerian casualties in the 2015 Hajj stampede. Okenwa expressed the determination of the commission to continue to work with relevant stakeholders to account for the remaining pilgrims that died in the stampede. “This was a year that the Saudi Arabia government did their best to ensure the success of Hajj exercise and safety of pilgrims, but Allah decreed that this will happen,” Okenwa said. He said that the Saudi Arabian Government was yet to respond to Nigeria’s request to be part of its committee set up to probe the incident. “Nigeria requested to be part of the committee investigating the incident, but we are yet to receive response from the Saudi authority,” he said. The Chairman of NAHCON, Alhaji Abdullahi Mohammed, also said that it was the prerogative of the Saudi Government to decide the composition of the committee investigating the stampede. He said that Nigeria had yet to receive any compensation pledged by Saudi Arabia for the victims of the September 11 crane crash at the precinct of Ka’aba. Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has reacted to comment by the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, that he was sabotaging the Igbo cause. His Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemedo, in a statement yesterday said, “Although Chief Uwazuruike had made his claim and his allegation, the indisputable fact remains that the real Igbo saboteur is Chief Uwazuruike himself and not Governor Okorocha, because all over the world, the real enemies of the people are those who fail or refuse to tell them the truth”. “Obviously, what must have prompted Chief Uwazuruike’s media attack on Governor Okorocha this time was the governor’s condemnation of the violent protest in the name of Biafra some weeks ago, and his remark that Igbo people would not use MASSOB as a platform to ask for what is due to them in an entity called Nigeria. But the truth must be told. “Chief Uwazuruike had used his MASSOB to adopt and support the Peoples Democratic Party and former President Goodluck Jonathan when they held sway. He should mention one project the PDP-led Federal Government or former President Jonathan did in any part of Igbo land. “The MASSOB leader was part of the hate campaign against the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari, while Governor Okorocha was telling his Igbo kinsmen to read accurately the body language of the rest of Nigerians. Today, it is left for Ndigbo to tell themselves the truth about who was the real saboteur, Uwazuruike or Okorocha? “It is also left for Chief Uwazuruike to tell his audience why MASSOB went to bed throughout the period Jonathan was the President, only for MASSOB to wake up from their deep slumber now that Buhari is the President”, he said. According to him, the Igbo cannot be asking for sovereignty in a country that they were one of the major stakeholders, adding that “if MASSOB had failed to achieve sovereignty under former President Goodluck Jonathan that they supported, would they achieve it under President Buhari they never supported? Who would allow them to achieve that? he asked. “Truly speaking, the issue of MASSOB is a distraction. And Igbo leaders and the governors in the South-East geo-political zone won’t be part of that unnecessary distraction. The leaders and governors in the zone have resolved to work with Buhari to attract development to the area. And the projects have begun to come with the elevation of the Imo Airport to Cargo International Airport. Work is already in progress in the place. “Governor Okorocha is an Igbo man and would continue to support and promote genuine cause of the Igbo within the corporate Nigeria and in the overall interest of the Ndigbo both at home and in the Diaspora.” SOURCE: http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/06/youre-the-real-saboteur-go-to-hell-with-your-massob-okorocha-blasts-uwazuruike/ |
Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has declared that for the change mantra of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to be accepted, Nigeria must undergo a restructuring process where all the geopolitical zones will have a stronger footing under a weak federation. Okorocha spoke on Monday as a guest lecturer at the 9th Edition of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Annual Lecture in Abuja. He insisted that change can only be actualised in the country when the dividends of democracy get straight to ordinary masses rather than the current system of concentrating them on politicians and their cronies. The governor also spoke on his last week's encounter with the Movement for the Actual- isation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). According to him, the MASSOB leaders presented issues which must be addressed by the Federal Government to make every section of the country have a feel of the new change. Okorocha's call for the restructuring of the polity came on a day the military again warned that it would not tolerate the ongoing clamour for the dismemberment of the country. The warning came from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, which threatened that the military might invoke the rules of engagement against pro-Biafra agitators if their actions/protests continue to undermine public peace and is a threat to security and unity of Nigeria. Speaking on the topic: "Managing Change in A Democracy: The Nigerian Situation", Okorocha regretted that rather than moving the country forward through democracy, the return to democracy had produced selfish politicians for Nigeria who only think of how to remain in power, rather than how to alleviate the sufferings of the people. He said: "I will tell Nigerians how I passionately feel about the change and unity of this country because of my deep concern for this generation and the generation of Nigerians unborn. In other words, with the coming in of President Muhammadu Buhari, this is an opportunity for us to get it right and if we do not get it right now, we can as well forget it. "That is why this topic is very crucial at this moment. This is because the idea of Nigerians, in electing him as president, is to actualise the needed change in a radical manner. The APC change mantra is not only about changing the government; it evolves around changing both the government and the system because if you change the government without changing the life of the masses who actualised the change, then change has not taken place holistically as is required. "A nation that understands the real message of change in a democratic setting always grows from strength to strength, while a nation that fails to understand it the way it is meant to be, degenerates from one problem to another. Democracy in Nigeria has given us politicians who only be- gin to think of how to remain in office as soon as they are elected, rather than how to put food on the tables of the people who elected them. "This is not the type of change we are clamouring for through the APC government. We are looking for leaders in a democracy and not managers of democracy and I thank God that today we have found that leader in President Muhammadu Buhari. "Nigeria is the sleeping giant of Africa with a population of more than 160 million people; we have dedicated youths with several God given resources which could change their lives, yet we are considered as underdeveloped in the world. A nation that has stayed together for over 100 years but got its independent over 50 years ago is regrettably still struggling on how to get it right. After all these years, we are still sitting here, discussing on what to do so that we can rescue our country. I think it calls for a deep reflection and that is why I have to say it the way it is no matter whose ox is being gored" he declared. On his encounter with the leadership of MASSOB in Owerri, Okorocha said: "Last week, when I got a security report that MASSOB said they will storm Imo to protest and that was where they threatened to carry out a catastrophic destruction, having heard that they pro- tested in Rivers and Anambra states and some of their members were killed, I held a state council meeting and I immediately contacted the President and security and I urged that there would be no shooting of any of their members. "We gave adequate protection and they were followed with armoured tanks and they went round. As they went, they prayed at every junction until they completed their peaceful protest. With that, they ended their protest in the state without a single loss of life. As a result of that, in the night, my Chief of Staff told me that he got an unknown call that MASSOB leadership said that they would want to have an audience with me. "Immediately, I called Mr. President and he told me to go ahead. Honestly, it was a very unpleasant situation because after passing through a series of security search and screening, I still was not comfortable with their presence because I saw the faces of agitating people who have denied themselves several things. They were all addressing themselves as late this or that, meaning that they have considered themselves dead already. When they were reeling out their grievances, I became touched. They were aggrieved that some of them were killed and displaced in the North East by the Boko Haram insurgency and they ran back home as abandoned people. "Most of them are orphans because they have lost their parents in the hands of Boko Haram and government abandoned them. Most of them complained that they were part of the Niger Delta agitators, but when it was time for amnesty, they were not considered by government because of where they come from. "Others complained that they have more than 160 of their members who were killed by government and their corpses are littered everywhere. These are their reasons of agitating for the State of Biafra because they want government to know that they are still a people that must be attended to. This is an ill wind that blows no one any good," he said. In a press statement, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Enugu, Col. Hamza Gambo, said the Army might not continue to stomach the demonstrations orchestrated by MASSOB, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and affiliate groups that tend to 'increase a sense of insecurity across the regions." The Army pointed out that in as much as freedom of speech, expression, association and assembly is guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution, on no account should the rights be abused. Gambo acknowledged that in as much as the Constitution allowed freedom as contained in Sections 39 (1) and 40, Section 212 (2) mandates the Armed Forces of Nigeria to "suppress insurrection to restore order when called upon to do so." "To this end, if and when the Nigerian Army is called upon to play its legally mandated role, it shall do so with utmost sense of duty and responsibility to the nation," he added. JigsawKillah:i know, but is it some states whose ministers are without portfolio that are duly represented. i pray the president succeed but i don't want him to start a trend that might likely continue, if after appointing his kitchen cabinet he told us he needs people he can trust and his supporters said it was based on merit, a lot of people argued and finally they let the matters to rest. personally i believe they are people the president can trust from all geopolitical zone and they are competent people all round, if also in defense the south feels its not represented then its wrong am just stating these for posterity, because we all know that if 2moro we have a southern president who reciprocate what the president is doing now they will be riot in the north and lives would be lost. personaly am fine whit any appointment the president wish to make and i don't care about where they come from, but will north be peaceful 2moro if another president does same to them? |
Montaque:I support you ooo but, the way nigerians are, any one who is in a position will bring all his relatives and town members to come and occupy other offices where he is, and before u know it they will be more people employed from were these people come from while other regions will be carrying files looking for job. these is why u see people crying and wanting their tribes men to be in some offices so they wont be shortchanged. these attitude is found in almost all nigerians. and am telling u these, it will take the south a long time to recover. they are competent people all over nigeria, even if u must appoint 100% notherners try as much as possible not to make others feels less important or making it look like they is no competent people in the south |
