When an European Airline was initially launched, an educated Muslim gentleman was Traveling in the first class section.

An air hostess approached him with a complimentary drink, this was an alcoholic drink so that man politely refused.

The air hostess returned but this time bought the drink on a platter, designed to appeal and impress. However the Muslim man again politely refused, explaining he doesn't drink alcohol.

The air hostess was concerned and informed the manager. The manager approached the man with another platter, now designed with flowers, he questioned, “is there something wrong with service? please enjoy the drink, it is a complimentary offer.”

The man replied, “I am a Muslim and I do not drink alcohol.” The manager still insisted that the man take the drink. Then, the Muslim proposed that the manager should give the drink to the pilot first. The manager stated, “how can the pilot drink alcohol, he’s on duty!

And if he drinks there are all chances for the plane to crash”. The passenger with tears in his eyes replied, “I am a Muslim and I am ALWAYS on duty in order to protect my FAITH and if I Drink Alcohol I will crash my whole life here and hereafter.

1. To have Wudhu (Ablution).
2. To brush the mouth before beginning the recitation.
3. To be in a clean pure place.
4. To read with humility, calmness and dignity.
5. To seek refuge with Allah (Ta’awwuz) at its beginning due to His saying Ta’aalaa: “And when you (want to) read the Qur’an seek refuge with Allah from satan the rejected one” [An-Nahl: 98].
6. To observe Bismillaahir- Rahmaanir-Raheem at the beginning of each Surah except Surah Baraa’ah.
7. His recitation should be slow beautifying his voice due to the Messenger’s (May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) : “Beautify the Qur’an with your voices” [Ibn Hibban narrated it], and His saying Ta’aalaa: “And recite the Qur’an well” [Al-Muzzammil: 4].
8. To ponder over what he is reading due to His saying Ta’aalaa: “A blessed book, We have revealed to you so that you may ponder over its verses” [Saad: 29].
9. To be touched by the Qur’an verses whether a promise or a warning. Allah Ta’aalaa said: “And when His verses are recited to them they increase them in faith” [Al- Anfaal: 2].
10. To read loudly wherever loudness is better.

I have noted that some worshippers let their nails grow long and they are filled with dirt. Is this befitting for a Muslim? Is their wudoo’ valid? Is there a specified time limit for cutting the nails, or for doing other things that are Sunan al-Fitrah (specific sunnahs connected to the natural disposition of man)?

*ANSWER*

Praise be to Allaah.
The nails must be cut within forty days (of the last cutting), because the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) specified a time limit within which people should cut their nails, shave their pubic hair, pluck their armpit hair and trim their moustaches, and not leave it for more than forty days. This was proven from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him), who was the servant of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “He set a time for us to trim our moustaches, cut our nails, pluck our armpit hair and shave our pubic hair; we were not to leave that for more than forty days.” Narrated by Imaam Muslim in al-Saheeh (258). It was also narrated by Imaam Ahmad (11823) and by al-Nasaa’i (14) and a group with the wording: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) set a time limit for us, we were not to neglect our nails and moustaches, and shaving the pubic hair and plucking the armpit hair beyond forty days.” Both men and women must pay attention to this matter and not leave the nails, moustache, pubic hair or armpit hair for more than forty days. Wudoo’ is valid and is not affected by whatever dirt is under the fingernails, because it is a small amount and may be forgiven.
