Kanu: We are ready for Argentina Nigeria's captain Nwankwo Kanu has assured Nigerians that the Eagles will not go into the World Cup, especially the opening group match against Argentina to pick balls, but to play all the way to an appreciable level Africa would be proud of. Speaking on a BBC TV interview programme, Extra time, the Eagles'skipper said, "We only have to have the belief and be positive. We don't go down to anybody because we have to show the world we're good especially on a big stage like the World Cup. "In Nigeria, we can die because of football. Four years ago, we did not make it to the World Cup, but luckily we will be in South Africa. "This is a big opportunity for an African team especially as the tournament is being played in Africa. It is a chance for an African team to make a big impact – either to win the World Cup or at least get to the Final." The Portsmouth forward said that the Eagles want to come out with something everybody could be proud of. The Nigeria Football Association has already given new coach, Lars Lagerback, a semi-final target but Kanu who is in the twilight of his career said the Eagles can play all the way and win the tournament. "Nigeria will be one of the strongest African teams at the World Cup. On a good day, we can beat any team, be it Brazil or Argentina. "There will be surprises at this World Cup and it won't be advisable for anybody to underrate any team," said Kanu. "Argentina are a big football country, but all the same, we won't go into this match just to go and pick balls. It will be an interesting game and the result of this game could determine this group. "It's important to win our first game and from there, we can move forward." Nigeria will move into camp in England on Friday after a Presidential reception in Abuja on Thursday. http://kickoffnigeria.com/news/15470/kanu-we-are-ready-for-argentina.php |
Yobo: Only teamwork can stop Messi Posted: 2010-05-18 15:02 Joseph Yobo has warned that the Super Eagles will have to play as a team in order to get a result against Lionel Messi and his Argentina team. Nigeria open their campaign on June 12 against Argentina and Yobo is wary of the devastating effect the current FIFA World Player of the Year has had all season. "Messi is unbelievable and just seems to get better and better," Yobo told CNN. "Every time he's on the ball you know something is going to happen. He deserves to be the world's best. "Its going to be very, very difficult, I think we have to do things as a team rather than as individuals. The way he plays he finds his freedom on the pitch which makes him exceptional but if we defend as a team and keep our position and keep our concentration for 90 minutes, hopefully we can do it." The Everton defender has been involved in the Nigeria international set up since for a decade, and says the pressure is something his Premier League colleagues do not understand. "They don't understand what we go through in Nigeria - you have an ultimatum of what is expected. For the last African Nations Cup they said if we don't get to the final or semi-final then we are no good. "There is always expectation because of what players in the past have done and we just have to try to better that or match it and it is very, very difficult. It's not every player that can stand up to that. "Playing for Nigeria, a nation of over 150 million, football is like a culture so when you do well you're a big hero but when you don't do well it's like you don't want to go back home. We've just got to throw in everything we have got to make sure we make Nigeria proud, and not just Nigeria, Africa as a whole." Not too many are giving the six African representatives a chance to win the World Cup, with Yobo's teammate Steven Pienaar saying an African country will not win the World Cup, but the big Nigerian insists that it is a unique opportunity for Africa to rule the world. "The World Cup is coming to Africa and it is very special. In South Africa we have loads of Nigerians staying there - it's like our second home. "It's very special in Africa because it is bringing out Africa as a continent - especially South Africa the host country - and we're playing close to home and are very excited about that. "Its a great opportunity and we want to make sure this time - we don't know when an African country is next going to be host -- we prove a point and we show how good African teams are, especially Nigeria. "Now we are playing close to our fans, close to our home and family and everyone is looking forward to it. There is great expectation and we believe this is the right time if we want to show this area can do something." “We want to make sure this time we show how good African teams are - especially Nigeria." Yobo is already in Abuja ahead of a Send Forth Dinner with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan. http://kickoffnigeria.com/news/15473/yobo-only-teamwork-can-stop-messi.php |
Jacob Zuma invites Goodluck Jonathan to World Cup South African President Jacob Zuma has formally invited Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to attend the opening ceremony of 2010 World Cup in South Africa. South Africa’s Minister of International Relations Maite Nkoana-Mashabane disclosed this in Abuja on Monday after paying a condolence visit to President Jonathan on the death of late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Nkoana-Mashabane said Zuma would be delighted to personally host President Jonathan during the football fiesta stressing that though South Africa is the venue of the tournament, Africa is the theatre where the event would be hosted. The South African minister said concerted efforts should be made to ensure that the football trophy remained in Africa and added that if Bafana Bafana failed to carry the trophy at the end of the day Nigeria should aspire to carry the trophy. http://kickoffnigeria.com/news/15476/zuma-invites-jonathan-to-wc.php |

@Semid You're missing one point here bro, Lawal was never a 1st team DM, infact, i don't think he was ever used in that position (in a serious game) through out his playing time so why should he be compared to Kaita? he played as a LWB, LF and LM 98% of the time he played and he was always favored more than any other player we had at that position at that time. one thing i want you to know is that our current squad is made up of average players and even decades ago, we only have few above average players so lawal's case should not be exempted. One more thing, it was not only his passion and discipline that made coaches like him at that time, it was partly because he did his job well, wherever he was placed, he did his job well and the coaches saw that he was a good executor, what else do you want from such a player whose playing time was always praised by his coaches? an utility player like lawal should not be under-rated the way you've been doing so far. As for your rating, that's for you and i know that alot of people would disagree with the ratings you gave him, he was a good player and he did his job perfectly, i know how many times he saved us from defeat incase you don't know and i also know how many times he played his heart out even when the rest were below par. I am no aboki myself, and i don't hate Kaita, infact, I'm one of the many that favors kaita over some of our present DMs, Kaita must make that 23 man list, but for you to downplay the work ethnic of Lawal in his playing days was wrong of you. He must have been doing something right throughout his 10yrs or more of playing for Nigeria because all the coaches kept selecting him. All the same, i want kaita in SA. |

FBS:So because Inter beat us, they are automatically the best in Europe? remember that they only beat us in their backyard unlike Rubin Kazan/ shaktar Donetsk who came to beat us at home, do we then say these clubs are the best in Europe because they did the unthinkable by beating us at home? You think i don't know my club's history? lol, i laugh in kwasiokwo's language, if i need an info about my team, i surely know where to go to, i don't have to prove them to you bro because you don't need to know since you're not even a fan. FBS:Well you don't have to say that before i detect your intention. ![]() All the same, let's wait till next season and for the team worth the UCL glory, let's wait till Saturday, who knows, we might end up seeing the best thing in Europe by then. |
no. |
Dis Guy:the clubs you stated are not worth playing at that stadium, the stadium is not for free bro, no where in the world would you see a club using a state stadium for free and i don't think these amateur clubs can pay the fees. As for Eko fc, it was fashola that founded that club, it's a state club, maybe they have sponsors for them, but we are not in the position to see that since the club is still young and plays in the amateur div for now, so no shame on Lagos. |
