Well, he took the wrong approach by going to labour office. The standard practice in this situation is to negotiate with the boss of the company that issued you work visa, then pay him off and then get a new labor contract from another company you like. Then you exit the country to kish island or back to Nigeria to do "U" turn after the new company have sent you a new work visa. That's how is it's done.
If your current company makes a case against you now... Omo they will ban for some time in Uae.

I lived in that country for awhile and I understand the situation well. when a company seized my cousin's passport...police couldn't save him. Even the embassy.. Not even a court order. We spent money fighting the company ... It was a wasted effort. He came back to Nigeria with TC issued by Nigerian embassy. He got a new passport in Abuja and new labor contract/visa before he could return to UAE.
