The world's second-largest gem quality diamond has been discovered in Botswana, the Lucara Diamond firm says.
The 1,111-carat stone was recovered from its Karowe mine, about 500km (300 miles) north of the capital, Gaborone.
It is the biggest diamond to be discovered in Botswana and the largest find in more than a century.
The 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond was found in South Africa in 1905 and cut into nine separate stones, many of which are in the British Crown Jewels.
"The significance of the recovery of a gem quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century... cannot be overstated," William Lamb, the CEO of Lucara Diamond, a Canadian diamond producer, said in a statement.
Lucara says two other "exceptional" white diamonds - an 813-carat stone and a 374-carat stone - were also found at the Karowe mine.
"I am truly at a loss for words. This has been an amazing week for Lucara with the recovery of the second largest and also the sixth largest gem quality diamonds ever mined," Mr Lamb said.
Botswana is the world's largest producer of diamonds and the trade has transformed it into a middle-income nation.

A book which teaches children how to recognise and reject sexual abuse has been published in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

The Bad Touch tells the story of a mother telling her children how to resist and expose abusers.

Author Lillian Butele Kelle said sexual violence was often swept under the carpet in Uganda because people don't want to bring shame to their family.

She said that she was abused by a family friend from the age of seven.

"I have used the pain that I have endured all my life towards something positive and empower children to not have to go through the same things that I did," she told the Newsfacebook Patience Atuhaire in Kampala.

She added that the book was meant to be read out loud to children by their parents.


Children should be armed to understand it and be able to come out because often they don't know it is happening, she said.

The writer added that there was a cultural belief in Africa that children should not be exposed to certain things and that was stopping many people from speaking out.

In furtherance of efforts by the Rivers State Government to recover government property from officials of the immediate past administration in the state, security agents and government house officials on Thursday took possession of government vehicle from the home of the former spokesperson for the Amaechi administration, Mrs Ibim Semenitari.

The security operatives carried out the operation at the home of Mrs Semenitari located at Ernest Ikoli Street, Old GRA Port Harcourt. The operatives recovered a Lexus Armoured Vehicle from the residence. Another Range Rover vehicle is said to have been in the possession of the former Information Commissioner


It will be recalled that top officials of the outgone Rotimi Amaechi administration carted away several government property and vehicles prior to May 29. Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has since assured the people of Rivers State that all government property illegally carted away before his inauguration will be recovered and those found to be involved in the illegal act will be brought to justice.

The Peoples Democratic Party Media Watchdog (PDPMW) has called for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari in response to his admission that his age will limit his performance.
The group in reaction to the statement said the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Buhari are a gang of hypocrites and liars.
In a statement obtained by Nigerian Bulletin, the PDP decried Buhari’s statement. The statement which was released by the head Tunde Lawal.
“The PDP is again vindicated by this confession from President Muhammadu Buhari and many more that are yet to come.
Nigerians will recall that during the presidential campaigns, the PDP and other well meaning Nigerians complained on the choice of sponsoring Pa. Muhammadu Buhari as Presidential Candidate of APC and the effect it will have on the country when it comes to managing the affairs of a multi dimensional nation like Nigeria, but the APC and its leaders said that age is just a number.
According to the group, “All they have done since May 29th is that Pa. Buhari and the APC has hit the ground sitting instead of running as they promised.”
“It’s barely three weeks into the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and his age is already telling on him, so, what will happen to Nigeria in the remaining 1,440 days of this government. It’s better to find a black goat in the day time rather than looking for it in the night and this is why we are asking President Buhari to resign now because Nigerians will not entertain further excuses of why the APC cannot deliver on their campaign promises”. the group said.
The group gave an example of how President Buhari’s age is affecting his performance when he referred to the President of Germany as President of West Germany.
“Nigerians saw this all along during the campaigns but could not resist the broom stick voodoo that the APC used to hypnotize the people. Nigerians will also recall that this same Pa. Buhari could not remember the complete name of His Vice Presidential Candidate and even the full name of his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) under which platform he was contesting and instead referred to it as the All Progressive Confidence during the campaigns. How long will a nation like Nigeria, the giant of Africa remained under this hypnosis of the APC” the group queried.
The group finally urged Nigerians to wake up to the challenge and demand the immediate resignation of Buhari, adding that the people should call for another election to elect a more competent and vibrant Nigerian to lead.
Meanwhile PDP has rebuffed the claim of former Governor of Kano state, Rabiu Kwankwaso that the party is dead.
