President-elect Muhammadu Buhari yesterday expressed his displeasure at the military’s inability to secure the life and property of its citizens.

“The military has never been so incapacitated like now. It’s a shame that the military cannot secure 14 of Nigeria’s local governments out of the 774 local governments in the country,” he said.

According to the president-elect, what is more worrisome is the fact that Nigeria’s military has to rely on South African mercenaries before it could gain recent success in the war against Boko Haram.

General Buhari, who made the above comment in Kaduna while playig host to the national executive council of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) described the development as “shameful and unacceptable.”ACF

“My administration will concentrate on three major areas on assumption of office; that is insecurity, the economy/unemployment and corruption. We will ensure we nip insecurity in bud.

“The Nigeria Army could not do small thing, they have to bring in South African mercenaries to enable them record the recent gains in the North East,” Buhari stated.

Speaking on governance, the president-elect said his administration would make sure that every Nigerian lives within his honest earnings, adding that “a situation where people live above their earnings will not be tolerated.”

In his address, the ACF chairman, Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomassie, a former inspector-general of police, had told the president-elect that Nigerians voted for him because they believe in his integrity, transparency, accountability, honesty and commitment to the security of life and property.

Coomassie noted Nigeria had never experienced the level of decay, the collapse of moral values and the high level of corruption, crime and impoverishment of the citizenry like in the last six years.

The ACF leader said: “Security has been the major concern, especially in the North-East region which has been devastated by the insurgency caused by the Boko Haram; and the energy, which is the source of power and main driver of the economy, requires serious and urgent attention. “

The former IGP further told Buhari that Nigerians are eagerly waiting for him to solve the problems facing them and to also free them from the shackles of poverty, ignorance, corruption and insurgency.

He advised the president-elect to restrict the powers of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

He said, “The current situation when SGF operates above ministers offends the laid-down principles of accountability in governance.”

APC holds forum on policy direction for new government

Ahead of the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) central government in the country, the roadmap for the policy direction of the Muhammadu Buhari –led administration would be unveiled during a two-day policy dialogue to be held in Abuja tomorrow and Thursday.

The policy dialogue, with the theme, “Implementing Change: From Vision to Reality,” is being organised by the Policy, Research and Strategy Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

Briefing journalists in Abuja yesterday, the deputy head of the directorate and former minister of youth and sports, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the president-elect would declare the dialogue open while the vice-president-elect, Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), would chair it.

Former British prime minister, Mr Tony Blair, is the keynote speaker at the dialogue where input to the roadmap for the actualisation of the policies of the incoming administration would be made by experts drawn from different fields and members of the public.

Abdullahi identified the core areas of focus in the two-day dialogue to include the economy, governance, job creation and security in line with the APC manifesto.

According to him, topics for discussion include: Improving the National Economy for Shared Prosperity; Repositioning Agriculture for Job Creation and Economic Prosperity; Developing Infrastructure for National Development; Achieving Sustainable Reforms on Oil/Gas Sector; Reducing Inequality and Achieving Sustainable Human Development; Achieving Holistic and Sustainable Reforms in the Education Sector; Developing an Education System Relevant to Nigeria’s Developmental Aspiration, and Achieving Qualitative and Affordable Healthcare.

Others include: Achieving Diversity and Inclusion in Public Life; Exploring Sports, Tourism and Creative Industry for Job Creation; Governance and Improved Efficiency in Public Service; Tackling Corruption in Public Sector and Foreign Policy and Agenda for Change.

Some of the speakers and discussants expected at the dialogue include Ms Ifueko Omogui-Okauru, former FIRS chairperson; Dr Rilwan Babalola, former minister of power; Dr Tajudeen Umar, former country chair, Nigeria-Sao Tome and Principe Joint Development Authority; Prof Niyi Ayoola Daniels, president, International Institute for Petroleum Energy Law and Policy; Mr Tunde Ahonsi, resident representative, UNFPA, Ghana, and Major-General Ishola Williamsn (retd).

Gambian president Yahya Jammeh‘s hatred for homosexuals seems to grow with each passing day.

Jammeh, who just last year increased the punishment for homosexuality to life in prison, vowed to personally kill all homosexuals.

According to Vice News, he said: “If you do it [in the Gambia] I will slit your throat — if you are a man and want to marry another man in this country and we catch you, no one will ever set eyes on you again, and no white person can do anything about it.”

Jammeh, who has been the country’s leader for 21 years, is one of the most outspoken African leaders against homosexuality.

In 2013 he asked parliament why he had never seen ‘a gay chicken or turkey’, and in 2014 he compared homosexuals to ‘vermin’.

Even discarded keys and coins can be turned into beautiful art with some creativity and the right sort of know-how. Michael (or Moerkey), an artist in Australia, does exactly that, turning discarded keys and coins into bottles, lampshades and other beautiful recycled metal sculptures.

“When I was supposed to be cleaning out my shed, I came across some old copper pipe saved from a previous renovation. I cut it up into rings and started making it into spheres,” Michael explains on his Etsy shop. “The first ones were a bit rough but once I worked out the technique I got creative.”

“I’m a bit of a hoarder and searched around for all those old keys and copper wire, that were no longer needed, and got creative with them as well,” he added.

Twenty-one persons have been killed by men suspected to be insurgents, dressed in military camouflage, in a highway attack in Yobe State.

The 21 persons, according to a local vigilante source, had been residing in Damaturu after fleeing their communities earlier captured by the insurgents.

But at the weekend, they undertook a trip to their communities to carry some foodstuffs from their silos because they felt that peace had returned to the place.

However, the victims who had been displaced from Lazarawa, Ngirbua, Maram and Garin Kuyama villages miscalculated as they were attacked on their way on Yobe Road.

The source claimed that the victims were intercepted and killed in Bultaram village on their way back to Damaturu.

“They opened fire on all of them, we believe they cannot be soldiers but insurgents dressed in military camouflage,” he said.

He revealed that the bodies of the victims had not been buried as their relations were awaiting clearance from the military authorities operating in the area.

At least six people have been killed in street clashes between the police and civilians demonstrating against the Burundian president's bid for re-election for a third term, a spokesman for the Burundi Red Cross has said, as hundreds continued to gather in the streets of the capital despite a heavy military presence.

Three people were killed in clashes with the police on Sunday and three others died of their injuries overnight, spokesman Alexis Manirakiza told The Associated Press news agency from Bujumbura, Burundi's capital.

Seven more people had been wounded, he added.

Bujumbura has been hit by protests since Sunday after the ruling party nominated President Pierre Nkurunziza for another term, which many say is unconstitutional.

Hundreds of demonstrators erected barricades and set tires alight in Bujumbura on Monday. The military was deployed on the streets after protests began on Sunday.

In what appears to be the latest development of the police crackdown on dissent, the country's leading human rights activist Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa has been arrested on Monday, his lawyer said.

Armel Niyongere, said Mbonimpa had not been informed of the charges against him, but said he believed "the arrest is linked to his call for demonstrations today".

'Brutally arrested'

A witness, who asked not to be named, said Mbonimpa was arrested "brutally" during a police raid on the headquarters of a media association.

An arrest warrant has also been issued for Vital Nshimirimana, head of a prominent NGO forum and leader of the campaign to block a third presidential term, sources told the AFP news agency.

Presidential elections are scheduled for June 26 and political tensions have been rising since the start of the year.

Burundi's constitution says the president "is elected by universal direct suffrage for a mandate of five years renewable one time," but Nkurunziza's supporters say he is eligible to serve a third term because he was first installed as president in 2005 by parliament to lead a transitional government, and not by a popular vote.

Those who oppose Nkurunziza, running for a third term include members of his own party, lawmakers, the clergy, student groups and civil society.

More than 10,000 Burundians have fled to neighboring Rwanda, citing pressure to support Nkurunziza's party.

Others alleged violence by the ruling party's youth wing, known as Imbonerakure, according to the UN refugee agency.

Human Rights Watch has also accused the Imbonerakure of committing serious rights abuses.

Foreign-owned shops in South Africa have been attacked and looted in east Johannesburg, the latest in a series of xenophobic attacks.

A standoff developed in the city, with police forming a barrier between an angry crowd and foreign-owned shops.

The violence comes despite Thursday's rally against xenophobia in the coastal city of Durban, and condemnation from President Jacob Zuma.

At least five people have died in anti-foreigner attacks in recent weeks.
Migrants, mostly from other African states and Asia, have moved to South Africa in large numbers since white-minority rule ended in 1994.Many South Africans accuse them of taking jobs in a country where the unemployment rate is 24%.

A crowd began looting foreign-owned shops in east Johannesburg on Thursday night. About about 200 foreigners took refuge at a police station.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the looters and arrested 12 people.
A new standoff began in the eastern suburb of Jeppestown on Friday, as police sought to prevent people from attacking more shops.

What I saw when I was going to the shops on Thursday evening, it was so terrible.

A group of men were dropped from a mini bus, and all of them were armed with pangas, a [type of] very big knife.

They started chasing people, throwing stones at them. Some were even knifed.

We had to run for cover. We ended up in the shops, and the owners closed the shops while we were still inside until the police were called.

What I saw was terrifying, and if it continues like this by the time the government wakes up many people will be dead. It is very, very bad.

Africans call for South Africa boycott

The acting Premier of the Gauteng province around Johannesburg, Qedani Mahlangu, called on "each and every South African who's a peace-loving South African to stand up and condemn this."

On Thursday President Zuma condemned the recent xenophobic attacks as "shocking".

"No amount of frustration or anger can justify the attacks on foreign nationals and the looting of their shops," he told parliament on Thursday.

Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been accused of fuelling the attacks by saying that foreigners should "go back to their countries". However, he said that his comments had been distorted.At least 62 people died in xenophobic attacks in South Africa in 2008.
