The official security slogan in Nigeria has long been "see something, say something." Due to systemic security failures across the country, everyday citizens have taken it upon themselves to be vigilant and proactive, stepping up to support our security agencies.

However, the current attitude of this government, its partisan supporters, and the Nigerian Police Force is sending deeply confusing and dangerous signals to the world.

Recently, residents in Ikorodu and Ibeju-Lekki acted proactively to apprehend suspected bandits—one of whom was openly wearing a bullet belt. This raises critical questions: Is carrying a bullet belt legal in this country? Since when did firearm ownership become legal for minors under the age of 18? Is unauthorized possession of military-grade ammunition even legal for civilians in Nigeria?

Instead of investigating thoroughly, the Nigerian Police rushed to the media to debunk the claims and clear these suspects. History shows that within a few days of being released by the authorities, these same individuals often return to terrorize and kidnap the very citizens who flagged them. Furthermore, multiple intelligence reports have indicated that bandits have overtaken farmlands in Ogbomoso. Yet, APC supporters and the police consistently downplay these warnings, even labeling the whistleblowers as alarmists.

The double standard is glaring. When citizens raise the alarm, they are ignored. But when these same unchecked elements successfully kidnap and butcher innocent people, APC supporters turn around and blame opposition politicians for the insecurity.

What exactly is the problem here? Why are the APC, the police, and other security agencies pampering banditry, only to shift the blame to the opposition when tragedy strikes? This behavior is entirely contradictory.

The government needs to explain this agenda to the Nigerian masses. Enough is enough.
