BusinessCBN Gives Customers BVN Reprieve by HowAreYou(op): 5:28am On Nov 11, 2015
Customers yesterday got a breather on the Bank Verification Number (BVN), with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directing banks to ensure their uninterrupted enrolment on the platform.

In a statement signed by its Director (Corporate Communications) Ibrahim Mu’azu, the CBN said although the time frame for the initial enrolment had elapsed, the exercise should go on indefinitely.

The BVN, which captures bank customers’ biometric data, such as fingerprints, provides unique identification for them and equally protects their accounts from unauthorised access, identity theft and fraud.

Customers who are yet to register are required to do so to avoid restrictions on their accounts.

“Account holders who are yet to obtain their BVN are enjoined to visit their banks and do the registration. There are two steps to the BVN process. The first step is to obtain a BVN while the second step requires the account holder to link the BVN with his or her bank account(s),” he said.

Mu’azu said an individual could enroll for a BVN without necessarily having a bank account. Such individual can then submit the acquired BVN at any bank he/she wishes to open an account.

He said linking BVN to bank accounts is now a one-stop-shop which enables account holders to register and link their BVN to their accounts in one location, irrespective of the banks in which they have their accounts. All these are aimed at making the process as seamless as possible.

“The BVN is neither a payment instrument nor an account number and therefore cannot be used to access any account by unauthorised users,” Mu’azu said.

PoliticsEFCC Arraigns Medical Director, 4 Others For N84.8 Million Scam by HowAreYou(op): 7:27pm On Nov 10, 2015
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 arraigned A former Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre , Owo, Ondo State, Dr Olufemi Abiodun Omotosho and four other suspects: Adebayo Sunday Dada; Yusuf Saka Olarenwaju; Ogunleye
Samson Adeyemi and Azeez Dayo Kola
before Justice M.I Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State, on an eight count charge bordering on conspiracy and money Laundering.

The accused persons were docked for allegedly
colluding to convert and launder the sum of
N84,884,005 (Eighty Four Million, Eight Hundred
and Eighty Four Thousand, Five Naira Only)
illegally obtained from the Federal Government.

The first accused person was said to have
connived with other four suspects, to steal
various sums of money belonging to Federal
Medical Centre, Owo, by using his position as the
Medical Director of the institution through
inflation of contracts, accounts manipulation and
non- remittance of the institution's account
balances as mandated by the Central Bank of
Nigeria at December 31 of each year.
The first accused person is already facing a
corruption charge before Justice Lateef Lawal
Akapo of the Lagos State High Court, for
allegedly conniving with his lawyer to bribe
operatives of the EFCC.

One of the charges read; “You Dr Olufemi
Abiodun Omotosho, Adebayo Sunday Dada,
Yusuf Saka Olarenwaju, Ogunleye Samson
Adeyemi, Azeez Dayo Kola sometimes in July
2013 at Owo, within the jurisdiction of this

with the aim of concealing the nature of the
proceeds of the said crime and thereby
committed an offence punishable under section
15 of the Money Laundering ( Prohibition ) Act
No11, 2011 (as amended)”.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the
charges. Counsel representing 2nd and 5th
defendants, Femi Emmanuel as well as counsel
representing the 3rd and 4th defendants, Dapo
Agbede, both filed formal bail applications before
the court. However, the counsel representing the
first defendant, Rotimi Olorunfemi moved an oral
bail application praying the court to admit his
client to bail.
Justice Sani adjourned the case to November,
17, 2015 for the hearing of bail applications and
ordered that the defendants be remanded in
EFCC custody pending the determination of bail.

PoliticsNigeria Closer To Oil Find In Chad Basin — NNPC by HowAreYou(op): 5:58pm On Nov 09, 2015
ABUJA — The Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation, NNPC,
has stated that the country is on the verge of discovering significant quantity of oil in the Lake Chad area, North- East Nigeria based on analysis of recent seismic 3D data generated from the Chad Basin.

The NNPC in a statement in Abuja also stated
that it was projecting the inflow of $20 billion
in 2016 to enable it fund major projects and
improve its bottom line going forward.
Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, who stated this during his
presentation to the Petroleum Club, Lagos,
over the weekend, entitled: “Ongoing Reforms in the Oil Industry: Impact of NNPC Reforms on the Nigerian Economy,” also added that the NNPC is injecting a lot of energy into oil exploration in the Chad area to ensure success in this regard.”

He also said: “There are signs from the latest 3D seismic studies that oil may well be very close to being found now in Lake Chad after very many years of trials. I think that this is very key. It is key both for the geographical balancing of oil production and it is also very key for the purpose of refinery placement in the north in terms of access to crude. I am optimistic that by the end of the year we should be able to announce something major on this.”

He described 2016 as a crucial year for the
NNPC as it is expected to transit from historic
loss environment to profit making domain.
Kachikwu noted that in driving and developing
Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, certain key areas
of urgent intervention have been identified
thus: running production acreages with
transparent and profitable partnerships to
bridge capacity and funding gaps; encourage
investment inflow into to Nigeria’s oil and gas
industry; engagement with local communities
and driving regulation to develop the sector
income, via encouragement of the fast track
