Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has said: the gap between the leaders and the people always cause the failure in governance in Nigeria. He added that the only way Nigeria can make progress is for the leaders to humble themselves and come to the level of the led. The governor made the comment in Ado-Ekiti while having an interface with the leadership of the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers . The governor said many Nigerian leaders fail in office because they get carried away with the grandeur of office and forget the people they lead. "The only way we can make the nation progress is for the leaders to humble themselves and come to the level of those being led. When they do that, they will know what the people need and be able to meet those needs” Source: www.thisdaylive.com/articles/fayose-why-nigerian-leaders-always-fail-to-deliver-democratic-dividends/224756/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in New Delhi, India, admitted that some of the measures he put in place might hurt some businesses in the short term. However, the president said these measures would sustain the economy on the long run. A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, quoted the president as saying: “We are aware some of these measures may hurt operations of some businesses in the short term, but we believe they are right for a sustainable economy.” The president said despite the fall in oil prices, his administration remained fully committed to maintaining macro-economic stability and improving investors’ confidence in Nigeria. At an interactive session with chief executives of Indian companies with interests in Nigeria, Buhari expressed the belief that with its abundance of human and material resources, the Nigerian economy did not have to suffer unduly from low oil prices, despite its severe impact on government revenues. “What is required of us to which we are strongly committed, is the implementation of tight expenditure controls, effective fiscal and monetary policies, including the husbandry of scarce resources which our introduction of the Single Treasury Single Account (TSA) has begun to address,” the president said. Noting that India has been a dependable ally and friend of Nigeria, Buhari urged the chief executives to expand their companies’ investments in Nigeria “so that we can, together, turn our engagements into a win-win situation for our two countries.” He said: “We can increase and diversify the current volume of our bilateral trade beyond US $16.36 billion, and diversify to other critical sectors such as agriculture; green technologies in power generation; infrastructure; information and communications technologies, the services sector, education, industry, especially textiles and solid minerals among others.” Buhari also urged the Indian CEOs, to accept the changes in policy being introduced by his administration and observe all extant Nigerian laws in running their business in the country. He warned, particularly, that his administration would not tolerate the importation of sub-standard goods, especially foods and medicines, into Nigeria. Buhari, while addressing the Nigerian community in India, said he was fully aware of the expectations of Nigerians who elected him on the platform of change, integrity, probity and accountability, and was therefore doing his best to meet those expectations. He said: “I wish to assure you that we shall do our best to fix the economy, create jobs for the teeming population of our youths and make the home environment safe, secure and more attractive to Nigerians outside the country like your good selves. On the economy, our aim is to address the challenge of infrastructure in all its ramifications, especially power and transportation. We are seeking to create jobs through agriculture, mining, industrial value-addition and the promotion of small scale enterprises. “We are also taking steps to address criminality across the country. We are tackling the menace of terrorism posed by Boko Haram head on and I am pleased to note that though sporadic attacks on soft targets have not stopped, the over-all capacity of Boko Haram to hold territory and determine the course of the conflict has been severely degraded. “If the current positive trends are maintained, we are confident that by the end of this year, we would have succeeded in permanently turning the tide against the Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria.” The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to curbing corruption, plugging all Loopholes in public sector accounting and deploying available resources for the good of all Nigerians. Buhari declared that recovery of stolen funds and prosecution of persons who had been indicted for corrupt practices would also continue to be vigorously pursued. The president said he expected the ongoing recoveries and prosecutions to serve as a deterrent to others who nurse the ambition of seeking public office solely for illegal personal gain. He assured the gathering that his administration fully recognised the devastating consequences of the illegal diversion of public resources meant for national development into private bank accounts, and was doing all within its powers to stop such diversions. “The anti-corruption campaign will be on-going for many years. We are committed to the enthronement of good governance that plugs the loopholes in public sector accounting, and the use of scarce resources for public good. “We are determined to demonstrate exemplary leadership that will make our citizens change their ways in a manner that lays a solid foundation for reconstruction and development. “I am confident that our approach to fighting corruption through value re-orientation, improved internal processes and systems and the rule of law as well as enhancing the capacity of the various anti-corruption agencies and institutions will prove more enduring in addressing this evil. “In the meantime, we will continue to prosecute those who have been indicted for corrupt practices and ensure that stolen funds are recovered to serve as deterrence to others who nurse the ambition of seeking public office solely for illegal personal gain,” Buhari stated. |
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will today resume the trial of George Uboh, the accuser of the commission’s chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, who alleged that Lamorde siphoned N1 trillion in recovered funds and assets. The trial is taking place in an ongoing case of fraud against Uboh at the FCT High Court in Abuja before Justice S.A Aladetoyinbo. Uboh is being accused on a three-count charge of selling government vehicles at the time he was an employee of the Police Equipment Foundation in 2007. Uboh had accused the EFCC leadership of siphoning some of the funds it recovered from former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Alameiyeseigha, who is now late; and former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun. He also accused the EFCC chairman of not declaring some of the assets recovered from the individuals. Currently, the National Assembly is investigating the matter. EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, told The Guardian on telephone that Uboh’s trial, “is an on-going case” Source: www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/10/efcc-resumes-trial-of-lamordes-accuser/

VICE President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday media reports that he had been named the Coordinating Minister of the Economy as was practiced in the last administration. He said the clarification had become necessary so as not to create the impression in the minds of the public. He said, while receiving the new Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonathan Richards during a courtesy call at the Presidential Villa noted that the media report to that effect was not the correct perspective. A statement from his media office in Abuja recalled that during the National Economic Summit in Abuja four weeks ago, the Vice President, who was trying to explain the absence of the President, who was the Special Guest merely told the audience that the President delegated him to represent him at the occasion. According to the statement, the Vice President was asked during a Presidential Dialogue why the President was absent at the Summit. “In his response, the Vice President explained that the President wished to be present, but due to pressing national engagements he couldn’t attend.. He apologised and then noted that as Vice President his role is to supervise the economy. To clarify the current position if government, the VP told the envoy, “We are not going to have a system like where there was a coordinating minister. No, there would not be anything like that.’’ He said as Vice President his role is ‘’ to ensure that everyone that is involved in economic activities, that there is a way by which the President is fully apprised of what everyone is doing such that we are all on same page and to make it easier for the President to make decisions.’’ Prof. Osinbajo also expressed the willingness of the Federal Government to deepen the existing bilateral relations especially in the area of economic cooperation with the Government of Australia, in mining, agriculture, shipping and transport sectors as well as in the area of Infrastructure development. Explaining the reason for Nigeria’s interest in the deepening of economic cooperation between the two countries, Prof. Osinbajo said ‘’the Federal Government would be interested in exploring deeper relationship on economic cooperation as it is a major area in diversifying our economy’’. He lauded Nigeria’s excellent bilateral relations with Australia and commended the Australian government for the various capacity building initiatives in Nigeria and its investments in some key sectors of the economy. The High Commissioner of Australia to Nigeria, Mr. Jonathan Richardson noted that his country’s bilateral relations with Nigeria had grown over the years. He disclosed that his country is seeking to enhance relations with Nigeria in areas of commercial development and is ready to offer technical assistance in some sectors which the country has given priority to. He noted that the Buhari Presidency would not be naming a Coordinating Minister of the economy; a practice introduced in the last administration. Prof. Osinbajo made the explanation while receiving the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonathan Richardson, in his office. In order to cater for thousands of Internally
Displaced Persons.
The state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode,
presented cheques to the governors of the
benefitting state governments at the briefing
room of the Council Chambers of the Presidential
Villa, Abuja, after the Council of State meeting.
At the brief ceremony, the governor said there
was no gainsaying the fact that the emergence of
Boko Haram and its devastating activities was a
single challenge facing the nation.
He said although the insurgence “is basically
limited to the north-eastern part of Nigeria, the
effect is felt everywhere across all the states of
the federation.”
The governor recalled that at the just-concluded
21st National Economic Summit in Abuja, the
Secretary to the Government of the Federation
presented what he called a graphic and heart-
rending report of the extent of damage and social
trauma brought about by insurgency in the
region.
He added, “Lagos State views insurgency and
natural disasters as hardships that leave
traumatic experiences.
“We commiserate with the three northern states
and share the pains and discomfort of our
brothers and sisters.
“We also commend our President for the renewed
commitment of the Federal Government to
bringing insurgency to a logical conclusion by the
end of the year.
“Our security agencies also deserve
commendation for their gallantry, courage and
resolution to ensure that the directive of Mr.
President and indeed the wish of all Nigerians are
achieved.
“Notwithstanding the hard times resulting from
the current economic situation, we have resolved
to show leadership and compassion to the plight
of our brothers and sisters in north-eastern
Nigeria.
“It is therefore in demonstration of our
commitment towards bringing succour and relief
to thousands of the IDPs that we present this
donation of N50m each to the governments of
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.
“We use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians
including corporate organisations and other
public-spirited individuals to reach out at this
time and alleviate the pains of our compatriots in
this part of Nigeria.”
Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, who
responded on behalf of the two other state
governors, thanked Ambode and the people of
Lagos State for the gesture.
He assured the governor that the funds would be
judiciously used for the purpose for which it was
donated.
He said, “On behalf of the governments of
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, we register our
profound gratitude for the empathy and support
shown by the government and people of Lagos
State under the leadership of Governor
Akinwunmi Ambode in this our hour of need.
“I believe that when the history of this event will
be written, the name of Lagos will be mentioned
in gold for identifying with us and showing
empathy to our people in our hour of need.
“Every problem comes with its own opportunities
for national regeneration and reintegration.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/lagos-donates-n150m-to-adamawa-borno-yobe-2/
