The Federal Government has signed a $2.3bn
assistance agreement aimed at fighting extreme
poverty with the United States Agency for
International Development.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President
on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande,
disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Akande said the agreement would help the
government to combat extreme poverty among
Nigerians over the next five years.
He said Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo signed the
agreement on behalf of the Federal Government
while the USAID Head of Mission in Nigeria, Mr.
Michael Harvey, signed on behalf of the US
government during a meeting at the Presidential
Villa, Abuja, last week.
He quoted Osinbajo as noting that since President
Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the US President
Barack Obama in the White House in July, the
Nigerian government had seen better cooperation
from the US.
The Vice-President also noted that there had been
great deal of interaction on how the present
administration intended to implement its agenda,
saying the interaction was because the US
wanted the government to succeed.
“The issue of the extreme poverty of a vast
majority of Nigerians is a very important issue for
us. It is at the heart of our economic policy. You
can’t have that vast number of poor people and
don’t plan around that and for us this is crucial
and absolutely important,” Osinbajo was reported
to have said.
The Vice-President also lauded the inclusion of the
North-East among the areas of focus in the
agreement, adding that there was a consensus in
government to address the problem of out-of-
school children and the observed drop in
enrolment figures in parts of the nation.
He promised that the present administration
would continue to lead a transparent and an open
government, clean up the business environment
and emphasise a bottom-up approach to
economic planning.
The $2.3bn assistance will cover activities from
2015 through 2020, with the objective of helping
Nigeria reduce extreme poverty in a more stable
and democratic society.
It is expected to stimulate inclusive economic
growth, promote a healthier, more educated
population and help strengthen good
governance.
The USAID director said the agreement would
provide a solid foundation for the two countries to
partner to reduce inequalities across the country. Source: www.punchng.com/news/us-to-give-fg-2-3bn-to-fight-poverty/ |
A Nigerian Muslim body, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of
Nigeria, has said it is calling for a nationwide
prayer for all the victims of the fallen crane and
the Mina stampede during this year holy
pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
The body, in a statement on Thursday by its
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji M.A. Adebanjo,
said the special prayer was called by its National
President, Alhaji Lafeef Okunnu (SAN).
It said the prayer would hold on Sunday, October
4, 2015.
The society commiserated with the families of
those who died and prayed for the quick recovery
of all the survivors currently receiving treatment
in the hospital as well as the re-union of those still
missing.
The statement partly read, “We pray the Almighty
Allah to forgive their sins and reward them with
Al-janat firdaus and grant those still being
hospitalised quick recovery. For those that are still
missing, we beseech Allah to grant them safe re-
union with their families.”
The society, however, joined the Federal
Government in demanding a probe into the Mina
stampede from the Saudi Arabian authorities in
order to forestall future recurrence of the tragic
incidents.
In the same vein, another Muslim organisation,
Nasrul-Lahi-Fathi Society, not only demanded a
probe into the incident but also called on the
Saudi Arabian authorities to reach out to the
families of the victims to mitigate the effect of the
deaths on them.
NASFAT, in a separate statement by its President,
Kamil Bolarinwa, said, “We believe people should
be held accountable; but the overall objective
should be the entrenchment of a system that will,
in the future, remove such failings, human and
infrastructural, from subsequent Hajj operations.
“However, while the investigation by the Saudi
authorities is going on, we enjoin the Ummah to
avoid any comment capable of undermining the
unity of Islam.
“This is the time to remain steadfast and
prayerful, a time to totally submit, as true
Muslims, to the will of Allah.
“We also call on the Saudi authorities to spare no
effort to provide adequate medical care for those
who sustained varying degrees of injuries during
the stampede and we urge them to intensify
effort in the search for all missing pilgrims.
“Beyond this, we call on the Saudi authorities to
commence a process to reach out to the families
of the victims in order to mitigate the effect of the
deaths on them, even as we acknowledge that no
compensation can assuage the irreparable loss
they have suffered.”
Meanwhile, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto
State on Thursday said all Nigerians who went to
Saudi Arabia for this year’s pilgrimage would be
accounted for.
This, the governor assured Nigerians, would be
ensured in spite of the twin tragedies of the crane
crash and the stampede that marred this year’s
Hajj.
Tambuwal gave the assurance when he visited
families of those affected by the tragedy in
Sokoto.
A statement issued by Imam Imam, the
governor’s spokesperson in Sokoto, noted that,
“Hajj officials are working round the clock to
ensure that all victims are properly identified and
documented. The areas mostly affected in Sokoto
State are Illela, Binji and Wamakko local
government areas.”
Addressing the families during a stop in Jamali
village of Binji Local Government Area, Tambuwal
said the government was still collating the
number of pilgrims who died, injured or missing.
He announced that as soon as the collation was
done, government would assist the families in the
best way possible. www.punchng.com/news/muslims-to-pray-for-mecca-stampede-victims-oct-4/ |
Civil servants in Ondo State have suspended their
two-day warning strike they embarked upon as a
result of the non-payment of their two- month
salaries by the state government.
Addressing journalists after the meeting of the
organised labour in Akure, the state capital, on
Thursday, the Chairman of the state Joint
Negotiating Council of the Nigeria Labour
Congress and Trade Union Congress, Sunday
Adeleye, said the union took the decision
following the intervention of some national bodies
of the labour unions in the country.
Adeleye, however, said the workers would resume
the strike if the salaries were not paid on or before
October 7, 2015 and public servants whose
names had allegedly been removed from the
payment voucher during the last verification
exercise were not reinstated.
He alleged that about 500 names of workers were
allegedly removed from the payment voucher of
the state Teaching Service Commission, Universal
Basic Education Board and core civil service
during the just-concluded verification exercise.
Adeyeye said, “Any worker found guilty of any
offence should be made to face the music by
following the due process, rather than unjustly
removing their names from the payment voucher.
“All salary arrears must be paid in full by
Wednesday, October 7, 2015. In order words, the
July, August and September salaries must be paid
in full by Wednesday, October 7, 2015,” Adeleye
insisted.
He however warned the government against the
victimisation of any member of the unions who
had played one role or the other during the
struggle.
The union leader said the strike did not have any
political undertone, “all of us are the stakeholders
in the government of this state.”
“On behalf of the JNC, I hereby direct all the
public workers in Ondo State to resume work
tomorrow (today). The government should try
and reason with us and yield to our demand. I
also want to tell the government that we are not
politically-motivated by any individual to embark
on strike,” he stressed. www.punchng.com/news/unpaid-salaries-ondo-workers-suspend-strike/ |
The Organised Labour Movement in the country
has said that Nigeria is not a failed state,
irrespective of the myriad of challenges.
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria and the
Nigeria Labour Congress stated this in separate
messages to mark the country’s 55th
Independence Day anniversary on Thursday in
Lagos.
The TUC President, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, said that
there was no problem which the nation presently
faced after 55 years of independence that it
would not be able to surmount.
Kaigama identified some of the challenges
bedevilling the country as ethnicity, nepotism,
unemployment, poverty and hunger, widespread
corruption, non-ideology based politics,
insecurity, insurgency and kidnapping.
According to him, others are mismanaged
economy, free-fall of the Naira, high taxation,
increase in electricity billing systems and
casualisation of labour.
He said countries that are advanced in their
democracies also have their peculiar problems,
“yet their citizens have not dismissed them or
redrawn their maps.”
Kaigama urged the people to exercise patience
and support President Muhammadu Buhari to
fulfil his promise of good governance.
He further advised the government to remain
focused to be able to achieve its desired good
governance in order to make a positive change in
the country.
The NLC President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, also called
on Nigerians to support the President in delivering
improved governance.
Wabba blamed the performance of the economy
before the general elections on dwindling oil sales
in the international market, fiscal indiscipline,
rising cost of governance and unhelpful macro-
economic policies.
He said it was regrettable that before the general
elections, the economy dropped to its lowest ebb
to the extent that funding the 2015 budget was
difficult and the government had to borrow to
pay salaries.
He said that not all ministries, departments and
agencies were paid, and apart from some states,
the rest were unable to pay salaries or pensions,
leading to a backlog of up to six months or more
of unpaid salaries.
He urged the government to put in place a
response strategy that could mitigate the after-
shocks and ensure a robust recovery. www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-is-not-a-failed-state-say-nlc-tuc/ |
