My people, let us all think about this! *Irony of Life in Nigeria* Rich man marries and have 4 children. Poor man marries and start mass production of children that he can't afford to train because the only thing that gives poor man joy is the body of his wife. The country has beaten him to the level that sex is his only idea of enjoyment. Politicians steal your money, sleep with your wife and girlfriends and sister, make sure you don't go to school, even when you struggle to, he makes sure you don't finish on time let alone getting a job. He sends his children to the best schools abroad so they will take over from him when he is done playing with your future. He initiates a poverty alleviation program, videos himself cutting tapes during the mounting of an electric pole. He gives you N4000, bags of rice at rallies and arms to fight his opponents. He paints the roads and puts Street lights when there are no light in your home. You hail him! He spends millions on billboards of his fake projects, hires the best PR experts to keep you drooling with hunger and uninformed and keep on doing damages to your common sense. You defend him. Second tenure, no jobs, no food, the N4000 has finished and the bag of rice wasting in the pit of your toilet. He must recover the billions he spent buying your votes. For he is not qualified to lead but you qualified him. You start making use of the guns he bought you. You kill the poor like yourself who is suffering the effects of the N4000 and bag of rice that you took. You try to Kidnap his friends, their police orderlies fire back at you. His friends tell him that there is insecurity in town and it will affect their mobilization for him for second term. He shouts ahhhh, second tenure is like the second round of sex that puts one to sleep after, except, perhaps, he works for vivid entertainment or one of those Hollywood porn industries. He complains of lack of security to the commissioner of police and General Officer Commanding, Air Officer commanding or the Flag Officer Commanding. He spends millions hosting them. They tell him what to do. By now, you have become a threat. He buys even a bigger gun for the police and the military plus operational vehicles. He pays for radio and TV jingles to warn you. You rob, you die. You protest, you die. You stay at home, you die of starvation. Then, you get recommended to a church and since you can't pay tithes, pastor turns you into an errand boy. He sends you to buy biscuits for his children, wash pants for his wife and clean his cars. You sweep the church for free while awaiting your heavenly reward while the pastor fly private jets and drive flashy sedans. You are happy that your pastor is rich and argue for him in midst of your friends. He runs to the UK at the slightest symptoms of headache but prays for you when you are sick and tells you to bring your sick mother to church for prayers instead of taking her to hospitals to waste money. She dies and he tells you that it was God's will while his mother has been in the UK for months receiving the best treatment that tithes can buy. He buys a new land for a new church branch, you help to carry blocks and turn concrete, then collect blessings as reward. You are happy to be working for the salvation of your soul, heaven will pay. The pastor lives his heaven on earth. The new church building is completed on your sweat. He invites the president, governor, senator, house of representative member and every other person who made sure that you are poor by design. The whole area is policed with guns and armored cars. You are comfortably seated at the back while straining your neck to see who and who came. The president and governor and senator plus their contractor friends donate hundreds of millions for the new church while you cheer from the back. The food they shared didn't get to you but you are happy the president and governor and senator came to your church. You even brag to others of how your pastor is well connected. You get home, hunger Knocks angrily on the belly door, your neighbor bails you out while you wait for heaven to pay. 10 years on the jobless job, pastor's children have been sent abroad for studies. Age is no longer on your side, pastor hooks you up with another aunty that sweeps the church for free with no education just like you and Weds you both on a Friday evening church service and you are happy. Your children starts the cycle all over again. What is the difference between an Ordinary Thief (OT) & a Political Thief (PT) ?* *1)* The *Ordinary Thief* steals your money, bag, watch, gold chain etc.; But the *Political Thief* steals your future, career, education, health & business! *2)* The hilarious part is: The *Ordinary Thief* will choose whom to rob; But you, yourself chose the *Political Thief* to rob you. *3)* The most ironic one: Police will chase and nab the *Ordinary Thief;* while the Police will look after and protect the *Political Thief!* That’s the *travesty cum irony* of our current society! *_And, we blindly say we are not blind!_* |

Ninety - one - year- old elder statesman , Tanko Yakasai , shares the story of his life with TED ODOGWU Where were you born ? I was born at Kofar Mata quarters, a neighbourhood of Yakasai town in Kano State . But I grew up in Yakasai , where I was weaned at the age of two by my mother ’s friend . I was named Tanko because I was preceded by female siblings . This is a tradition in Hausa , which is still being practised till today . The name of my father is Abubakar Barau and my mother is Hauwa Abubakar . Tell us about your educational background. I didn ’t go to a normal school initially . I attended Quranic schools . I attended evening classes at Shahuci Elementary School. I studied up to Grade II level. And by the time I graduated, I had trained myself to be a professional tailor . I had interest in western education . The Government of East Germany offered me and the late Ali Abdallah , the father of Na ’ajat Mohammed , an opportunity to study in East Germany then . I travelled there for a degree programme but at the time , we had to spend one year to learn German language because the universities offered lectures in German . I calculated that at the end of the day , the programme would take at least seven years to complete . This was because I had to first master the German language . Then I had three children. I could not afford to leave my wife and three children for long. I then opted for a diploma programme instead of the degree programme . Other education I later acquired was self -taught . Can you share your experience in colonial northern Nigeria ? The British believed that if they educated northerners the way they did for the southerners , their control of Nigeria would not last long. There is a saying by a popular colonial master that “to educate the North is to lose Nigeria .” The British limited the education they administered in the North . All the big names such as Tafawa Balewa , Sarduana , Muhammadu Ribadu , Inuwa Wada, Aminu Kano , Isa Wali and the rest of them were only able to attend either mid - school or college . College was the highest educational institution the British provided for northern Nigeria in those days . You once described yourself as one of the most prosecuted politicians in the North . Why did you say that? I was in prison to prison . During the First Republic , I was convicted or detained four times , from 1960 to 1966 . When Muhammadu Buhari took over power , I was also detained alongside many politicians . That was my ninth arrest and detention . When General Ibrahim Babangida ( retd ) took over from Buhari , I was also arrested and detained for attacking the military . I was not convicted but detained for one month. We took the government to court and when they realised they were going to lose the case , they set me free . That brought my detention and arrest to 10 times , as a result of my political activities. I don’ t think any Nigerian was arrested 10 times in that period, either imprisoned or detained , as much as I was detained . You have many wives and children. Many believe polygamy can reduce life expectancy . What did you do differently ? Those who believe that polygamy reduces life expectancy are wrong! They are not speaking from experience. Many factors influence life expectancy . In some countries like Afghanistan , Pakistan , Iran , etc , there is the problem of poverty and illiteracy . Because of that , people are not able to take care of their children well. I read an article on WhatsApp written by an expert . The article notes that those who practise polygamy live longer than those who practise monogamy . I agree . How do you manage rivalry among your wives ? This is our culture . It depends on who they are. Sometimes , they manage to live together peacefully but sometimes, they quarrel among themselves . From my experience, what often leads to such a quarrel is the inability or refusal of the younger ones to submit to the leadership of the older ones. But in some cases , they live peacefully with one another , such that you would not believe that they are married to the same husband . Do you drink ? Alcohol ? No , I only drink water and soft drinks from time to time but certainly not alcohol . What are the lifestyle choices responsible for your good life ? This is basically from our genes. My grandfather died at the age of 105 . My father died at the age of 96 , while my mother died at the age of 87 . Longevity is peculiar to our family. I still have well over 500 relations apart from my grandchildren . You were Hausa editor of the Daily Comet . What led you to journalism ? I had a flair for western education. I did not get the opportunity to further my education beyond the diploma in political economy I obtained from Germany. I attended English tutorial classes and British Council English tutorial classes in Kano . I addition , I used to task myself to read . The most important habit that journalism helped me to develop is the culture of reading . I read every morning . Let me share a brief story . At the time I was Hausa editor , I bought the West African Pilot, Daily Times and Nigerian Citizen, published in the North . If I buy a newspaper and I see a story that interests me , I would read the entire story . If in the course of reading the stories , I came across a number of words that could make the comprehension of the story incomplete, I would write them down. In the evening or at night, I would take a dictionary to find their meaning . The greatest achievement I recorded as a journalist was the inculcation of the culture of reading . I practise this habit till today . This culture of reading is the most important lesson I will take to my grave. During the Second Republic, you were a special assistant to President Shehu Shagari . How did you get the job? I was in my house when President Shagari sent the then Minister of Internal Affairs , Alhaji Bello Maitama, to my house . Shagari had been my friend for a long time . Prior to that time , we were also members of the Northern Consultative Committee . We related very well. The President sent Maitama to invite me to Lagos that he wanted to see me . He knew that I hated visiting or living in Lagos . We used to discuss this . He also said he would only stay in Lagos as a matter of necessity , not because of his wish . I asked Maitama if he knew why the President sent for me. He said he didn ’t know and I accepted to go. That was at the early stage when Shagari was forming his cabinet . We went and on arrival , he asked Maitama to excuse us . He told me , “Tanko , I know you do not like to stay in Lagos but I also want you to remember that I too don’t like staying in Lagos . And because of that , I didn ’t want to contest the presidential election that I am now holding .” I said , “I know .” He said , “You people compelled me to seek the presidential position . This is the sacrifice I am making . I am going to ask you to make a similar sacrifice. I want to appoint you as special assistant .” That was how he drafted me into his administration. You supported former President Goodluck Jonathan against President Muhammadu Buhari. Do you regret that action today ? I will support Goodluck Jonathan any time . I will do it tomorrow and even a day after tomorrow . I will do it next year and will do it until the end of my life . I will tell you why . After the 1959 general elections , the Northern Peoples Congress and National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons formed a coalition government , which ushered Nigeria into independence . So , Igbo and the northerners worked together during the First Republic . Now , during the Second Republic , although an Igbo man was the Vice President , the Igbo did not give NPN the kind of support that minorities in the South gave to the NPN . The NPN got 25 per cent in all the minority states in the South. The bulk votes of minorities in the South, together with the North , gave the NPN the majority to earn the Presidency . The civil war created a big wedge between the Igbo and the northerners because an average Igbo man believes that the civil war was fought between the Igbo and the Hausa Fulani. They do not believe that they fought the war between the Igbo and Nigerians . The Yoruba were divided into two–pro -NCNC and pro -Action Group . Even though Chief Obafemi Awolowo is no longer alive but the anti -Hausa and anti - Fulani sentiments are still more among the Igbo because of the civil war. When was the last time you spoke to Buhari? The last time I spoke with Buhari was between 10 and 15 years ago . I spoke with him when I delivered a lecture at the Bayero University Kano , organised by the Students Union . The students , after criticising previous leadership in the country , requested Buhari to join politics , so he could be President and correct the mistake of the previous leaders made in the country . He said he would not join politics because politics is now a business of money and he has no money to do it. He said he could not afford it. That was the last time I spoke with him . But he sent a delegation to me when he was considering contesting election in 2003 . At the time , I had already committed myself to another candidate . What is your assessment of the Buhari administration? I did not support Buhari ’s candidacy in the first place and the All Progressives Congress because they have no programme . They did not prepare to rule Nigeria and did not provide any viable programme to transform Nigeria into a better place . I didn ’t support them . Till today , I retain my position . What are your regrets about Nigeria ? My regret is that military intervention destroyed the foundation of leadership in Nigeria . They destroyed the leaders . They destroyed people who can succeed the leaders and build on what they have started . Also , they destroyed the political party system in Nigeria , which is the only vehicle for developing democracy and the transformation of a country . The military introduced corruption and impunity to our system . Nobody can build a country on corruption and impunity . Until we do away with corruption and impunity , we cannot get it right . To get it right, we have to get political parties that have articulated programmes for transforming Nigeria into a better place . The political parties we have today are not political parties because they have no programme . They are all the same . You cannot see any difference between one and the other . What does the country need to do to stay together? The country is staying together . Those who are talking about splitting this country are minorities. They are disgruntled people , who wanted power and they didn ’t get it. The way to look at Nigeria is not from the perspective of these disgruntled elements . You don ’t see any Igbo man fighting a Hausa man in Enugu, Onitsha or anywhere . You don’ t see any Yoruba man fighting Igbo or Hausa man in any place in Yoruba land . You don’t see Hausa or northerners fighting Igbo in Yoruba land or any place in northern Nigeria . The ordinary people are living with one another , in peace and harmony. The unity of Nigeria is solid because the ordinary man in Nigeria is in support of peace . And besides , the three main groups in Nigeria ; Yoruba , Igbo and Hausa , including the minorities , either in the North or in the South live in peace. If the majority elements are not with them , they fight one another . Today , if there is no Nigeria , you will hear Urhobo fighting Itsekiris . Even today or recently , you find Edo asking Ijaw to leave Edo State . The current stability among the minorities is brought about by the existence of Nigeria . You were raised by your mother ’ s friend , Yaya Boyi . Tell us about the experience . Yaya Boyi became a friend to my mother because they got married at about the same time to common friends . She was a bit older than my father . Therefore, my mother had to respect her and decided to call her Yaya , which means aunty or elder sister . She was not fortunate to have a child of her own . The first daughter of my parents was given to her for posturing , which is a Hausa tradition ( giving their child to their friend or relative ) . Unfortunately , my elder sister did not live long , as she died at the age of between one and a half and two years . Thereafter, my parents were again blessed by having me. She requested that my parents should be kind enough to give me to her , as a replacement for my late sister . She looked after me up to the time I got married for the first time in 1945 . What motivated you to join politics? The way I joined politics was very interesting . In the first place , I read political views of prominent northern politicians like the late Sa ’aid Zungu , Aminu Kano , Isa Wali , Nuhu Bamali , Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and many others in the vernacular newspaper ; Gaskiya Tafi Kobo . It is a very popular newspaper , still being published . I didn ’t know anything about political party system then but only the political views they were expressing about independence and anti - British domination . However , by 1946 , the NCNC leaders were touring Nigeria and came to Kano . The team was led by Dr . Herbert Macaulay and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe . The colonial authorities at the time directed the town criers to announce that some southerners were coming and parents shouldn ’t allow their children to attend their event which was to hold at Sabon Gari . My friends wondered why the authorities directed parents not to allow their children attend the event . For us to satisfy our curiosity , we decided to be at the gathering. We were between 20 and 21 years old then . We went to the NCNC rally at Aggrey Square at Sabon Gari , Kano . We listened to what the NCNC leaders were saying which made sense to us . They said they were going round the country to raise funds for the purpose of sending a delegation to the colonial office in London to protest against the method the British Government was adopting in Nigeria by appointing people to represent Nigeria in advising the British Government in Nigeria . The NCNC said they would protest against the method . They said if the British wanted people to advise them on what Nigerian wanted , they should allow Nigeria to elect the people , who would represent them to present their case rather than appointing people to tell them what Nigeria wanted . It made sense to us . We were impressed by it and that signalled the beginning of my interest in politics. The following year , in 1947, the Kano Youths Association was formed . It was part of the political movement, which northerners developed as a result of the concept of the NCNC delegation . There was Sokoto Debating Society, organised by personalities like Shehu Shagari, Ibrahim Dasuki and Ibrahim Gusau , among others . In Bauchi, there was a group , called Bauchi Discussion Circle , led by leaders like Tafawa Balewa , Sa ’adu Zungu , and Aminu Kano , was then a teacher in Bauchi Mid - School, Yakubu Wanka and many others. The group in Sokoto also transformed to Sokoto Youths Association or something similar to that ( The correct name of the association is in Sheu Shagari ’s book , Beckoned to Serve) . These organisations started to spring up in many parts of the North and between 1947 and 1948, we started to protect one another and by 1949 , a cultural organisation , the Northern People ’s Congress was formed in Kano . But in Hausa it is called ; Jem’iya Mutane Arewa , which is an association of northern people . Following the formation of Kano Youths Association , my childhood friends , like Abdulkadir Dan Jaji , Baba Liya Manager and the rest of them became active members of the organisation . As a result of that, they attracted me into that association and I became a member . But when Jemiya Mutane Arewa Zaki , the new NPC was to be formed in Kano , Kano Youths Association was invited as a constituent unit like the Sokoto Youths Association and Bauchi Discussion Circle . Other splinter groups then sprang up all over the North and were made to be the constituent unit of the Jemiya Mutane Arewa. Members of the organisations automatically became the founding members of the NPC and that was how I joined the group . What is your view of the afterlife ? Heaven and hell are realities of life ! The God you believe in is the same God I believe in and we are all worshipping Him . It is He who knows who is the right person. And we have no right to decide; it is God who will decide who is practising religion on His behalf . What is the greatest mistake made by the country ’ s foremost leaders? I think the foremost Nigerian leaders , in my opinion , were those , who institutionalised sectionalism and ethnicity into politics . It was the greatest mistake they made . They should have concentrated on building the nation , as well as on what they can do for the country to be better . Are you fulfilled at 91? I feel happy . I am grateful to my God for His mercies, good health and long life . I thank Him for giving me many children and grandchildren. Today , I have 19 surviving children . They are all graduates. They are all independent . Also , they have their own children. I have 88 grandchildren and their parents take care of them . I am grateful to God for allowing me to have a fulfilled and satisfied life . for more please click on the link below. http://punchng.com/those-who-practise-polygamy-live-longer-than-those-in-monogamy-tanko-yakasai/ |

A 28-year-old trader, Kemi Shopade, who allegedly assaulted two Ikeja Electric workers that wanted to disconnect her electricity wire, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Shopade, resident of Alaguntan, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, said that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 24, at her residence. Awase said that the accused and two others, who had yet to be apprehended, assaulted two workers of Ikeja Electric — Mr John Oluwole and Mr Uwaoman Ibiam. “The accused beat up and bit the complainants while performing their duty,” he said. He said that the complainants disconnected the electricity supply of the accused over unpaid electricity bills from January. “The accused, who had not paid for electricity since the beginning of the year, descended on the complainants when they disconnected her power supply. “The two other men who are still at large joined her in beating the complainants, and in the process, the accused bit the complainants. “The case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said. The offences contravened Sections 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 prescribes three years jail term for a person guilty of assault. The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum. The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. He adjourned the case until Jan. 5, for mention. …says Buhari pardoned, gave cash gifts to over 500 inmates in Kano By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA – Counsel to the ‘missing’ leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Federal Government to grant state pardon to youths of Igbo extraction he said were arrested and locked up in various prisons for exercising their constitutional guaranteed rights to self determination. IPOB members on solidarity march Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, in the letter he wrote to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, decried that “hundreds of innocent and defenseless IPOB members who are mostly youths”, are languishing in different prisons in the South East states and Kuje Prison in Abuja, based on “phantom, frivolous and cooked-up allegations”. He further drew attention of the AGF to the fact that one of the alleged pro-Biafra agitators, Mr. Bright Chimezie, has been in custody of the Department of State Service, DSS, without trial, despite a judgment of the Federal High Court in Uyo which ordered his release and also awarded him N5million damages for the violation of his fundamental human rights. Ejiofor noted that President Muhammadu Buhari had barely a week ago, granted state pardon to over 500 prison inmates detained on various violent offences in Kano Maximum Security Prison. He said the freed inmates were equally treated with cash gifts containing unspecified sums of Money. “While commending the Commander in Chief for such a patriotic act, we respectfully wish to implore the President to extend the same gestures to hundreds of innocent and defenseless members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), largely made up of Youths of Igbo extraction, held across the various prisons in the south East States and Kuje Prison in the Federal Capital Territory, on accounts of phantom charges, frivolous and cooked-up allegations, for merely exercising their constitutional guaranteed Rights to self determination including our Client who has been held in the custody of the SSS for over 14 months without trial. “What is good for the goose is also good for the gander! If the President is a true Nationalist, he should do the needful in this regard, without further prompting. One sided justice will amount to injustice!”, Ejiofor stated in his letter. He said the DSS had since been served with a copy of the high court order dated May 24, 2017, which directed it to immediately release Chimezie from detention. “On the 30th day of May 2017, a formal communication was submitted with the Director General of the State Security Services, requesting him to obey the order of Court, still the order was treated with brazen contempt and disdain, as our Client was neither releasedon bail, nor charged to Court. “Following the continued detention of our Client in flagrant disobedience of the positive orders of the Court, we initiated a formal contempt proceedings against the Director of State Security Services, through the filing and service on them, the requisite statutory forms (Forms 48 and 49), Notice of consequences of disobedience to Court Order, and Notice to show cause why the Director of State Security Services will not be committed to prison for his failure to obey Court Orders. “Also attached for your ease of referenceare the above referred forms. “However, in a desperate but unavailing charade to present an impression of strict compliance with the directives contained in the order made on the 24th day of May, 2017, the name of the Applicant was smuggled in as the 5th Defendant in charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015 between FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA VS NNAMDI KANU & ORS. “In the amended chargedated 21st day of June, 2017, and filed on the same date, our Client was charged with two offences to wit: (a) Conspiracy to commit treasonable felony and (b) Improper importation of goods. “The Attorney General is therefore invited to take note of these salient points as a manifestation of obvious acts of malafide on the part of State Security Services, acting under the strict directive of the State; The two Count charge preferred against our Client in the amended charge, contained offences which are ordinarily bailable in law, such that may not warrant or justify the detention of a subject beyond the statutory prescribed period, before being released on bail. “Charge No FHC/ABJ/CS/383/2015 above referred was first amended on the 7th day of November 2016, when our Client had spent well over 23 days in the custody of the State Security Services, still he was not joined as a party, if truly he had committed any offence known to Law. “The State Security Services suddenly remembered that our Client should be charged to court, only when the Court order compelling them to either release our Client on bail or charge him to Court was served on them on the 25th day of May 2017. “Since the amendment of the charge on the 21st day of June, 2017 vide the inclusion of our Client as the 5th Defendant in the amended charge, he has not been produced before the Federal High Court seized of the matter for the purposes of taking pleas to the charge, till date. “On record, the charge came up on the 17th day of October, 2017, November 20th, 2017, and 5th December, 2017, but on all of the above dates, our client was not produced in Court, neither was the said amended charge ever mentioned in Court. “When the plight of our client was formally brought to the attention of the Court, and the facts of the existing Court order of coordinate jurisdiction directing the State Security Services to release him, His Lordship (Hon. Justice Binta Nyako) declined to comment on the amended charge, as according to my noble Lord, Our Client has not been brought before her, so that she cannot assume jurisdiction over a charge that has not been read or mentioned before her. “Implicit in the antics of the State Security Services is that they are in law, still holding our client in clear disobedience of positive orders of Court that directed them to release Our Client. “It is crystal clear that our Client has spent well over 14 months in the custody of the State Security Services without trial. His continued detention is unlawful, illegal and in flagrant violation of both the positive orders of Court and relevant provisions of the Constitution above referred. “It is our respectful submission Sir, that to allow a flagrant disobedience of orders of Court is to strike hard at the foundation of the rule of Law and thereby unwittingly bring about anarchy. See the dictum of ADEREMU JCA in ODUNSI VS ABEKE (2000) All FWLR (Pt. 10) 1625.Justice in its total practical content is truth in action! “Justice is much more than a game of hide and seek. Our Client is therefore entitled to unconditional bail in the prevailing circumstance, and we respectfully urge you Sir, to use your good office to prevail on the State Security Services to release our Client without further ado. “Recall that you are under constitutional Oath as the Chief LawOfficer of the Federation, to protect and ensure absolute allegiance to the letters and dictates of the Supreme Law of the land. You can only be failing in the performance of this solemn duty, if after receiving this letter, you still allows our Client to spend another night in the dreaded custody of the State Security Services. “We respectfully observe therefore, that the administration of Justice is the firmest pillar of government. We implore you most respectfully Sir, to respect the sanctity of the judicial process, and accordingly give effect to positive orders of Court of competent jurisdiction by directing the release of Our Client without further prompting. “State Security Services is a creation of the Law and is at all times, expected to operate within the confines of Laws establishing the Agency, and not above the law. “It is the height of executive rascality and brazen impunity to allow positive orders of Court to be treated with disdain and contempt by the very Agency they supervise. It is time to put a stop to this impunity. “Harming one’s inalienable right in order to serve any sinister motive is injustice”, the letter further read. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/12/biafra-kanus-lawyer-writes-fg-seeks-pardon-detained-ipob-members/ |

premiumtimesng.com Apr 3, 2017 4:36 PM The Police Command in Enugu State has warned masquerades and their assistants against assault, molestation and intimidation of Nigerians in the state under whatever guise. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, gave the warning in a statement in Enugu on Monday. Mr. Amaraizu said that the police would arrest anyone caught committing any offence under the guise of masquerade shows. He said that the command had continued to say that people’s rights should not be infringed upon in any show or festivity. He advised communities to celebrate their culture and masquerade festivities within the confines of the law. “The Police have frowned at the report received concerning the alleged recklessness of some masquerades and their assistants on the issue of assault, molestation and intimidation of good people of the state. “Anyone caught committing offence or wreaking havoc on members of the public under the guise of masquerade festivities will be promptly arrested and prosecuted,’’ he said. In a related development, the command through its operatives in Nsukka Police Divisional Headquarters, nabbed one of the assistants of Oriokpa Masquerade, Nnamdi Okoro, in Nsukka on March 26. Mr. Okoro was alleged to have assaulted Ezeugwu Lawrence, which caused him injury on his head at Ugwuoye axis of Nsukka. “Okoro is now helping police operatives in their investigation. “He will be arraigned properly in court after investigation,” the police spokesperson said. 247nigerianewsupdate.co Apr 3, 2017 1:00 PM The Managing Director, Multichoice Nigeria has said in a statement that its decision to increase the subscription rates of DStv and GOtv was made after careful consideration into the market and review of its business operations. Just less than two years after Nigerians threatened to boycott MultiChoice Nigeria over 20% subscription hike, the owners of DStv and GOtv, have yet again, increased their subscription rates by 5% with effect from May 1, 2017. John Ugbe, managing director of Multichoice Nigeria, in a statement, defended its latest action, saying the adjustment was made after careful consideration and a review of its business operations. “We announced last year that we would do everything possible to hold the price barring any extreme factors. “However, all our content is purchased in dollars and although we have done everything possible to hold the prices even with the price of everything else going up, we are now left with no choice but to adjust our subscription prices from May 1. “Our key priority is to put subscribers’ needs at the heart of everything we do and therefore, in determining the price adjustment, we took into account many factors including, the impact on the customer, current inflation which stands at 19 per cent, programming costs and efficiencies within the company. Please be assured that we have worked really hard to keep this year’s fees manageable.” Under the new price regime, the DStv monthly subscriptions are; 1. DStv premium bouquet, which is N13,980 will be N14,700 2. Compact Plus DStv subscribers will pay N9,900 as against the current N9,420 3. Compact subscribers will pay N6,300 instead of the normal N6,000. 4. Family bouquet subscribers will now be charged N3,800 as against the N3,600 5. Access bouquet would be N1,900 and not N1,800. 6. Commercial bouquet, which is currently N1,720, has been adjusted to N1,850. The new rates for GOtv subscriptions are; 1. GOtv Value will now pay N1,300 instead of N1,200 2. GOtv Lite bouquets will pay N450, against the current rates of N400 3. GOtv Plus subscribers will have to pay N1,900 instead of the current rate of N1,800.
