Ferry Services To Alleviate Suffering Of Commuters Along Calabar-Itu
Just like Ibomair and Callyair.. AkwaCross on the beat again
A picture of Calabar- Itu Road
Marine investors in Akwa Ibom and Cross River have woken up to the challenge facing commuters from both states travelling through the Calabar Itu federal highway.

For more than 15 years now, travelling along the 45 year old road has been a nightmare to commuters, with some spending hours or sleeping on the road.

Many burials, wedding, traditional marriages and other appointments have been cancelled or postponed as the main actors are caught up in the perenial congestion along the road.

Many lives have been lost along the road with professors from the University of Calabar topping the list of notable personalities who died on the road.

The federal government of Nigeria has paid lip service to the rehabiltation or reconstruction of the road, rather contractors are usually mobilised to the road as each general election approaches.

Before the deplorable condition of the road, the journey from Calabar to Uyo which is about 100 kilometres used to take an hour but today the fastet record when there is no traffic congestion is four hour.

The road is littered with broken down trucks as craters dot every kilometre of the highway which has unleashed heavy economic toll on the two states and commuters using the road.

Last week, Ibom City Ferries announced plans to commence scheduled Ferry service from Oron, in Akwa Ibom State to Calabar, Cross River State with effect from December 2021.

The Managing Director of Ibom City Ferries, Mr Larinde Williams stated that the service is expected to change the landscape of travel in the state.

Williams continued that to further the commitment to help promote water transportation in the state as an effective, fast and safe alternative to road transportation, Ibom City Ferries will commence its ferry operations from Oron to Calabar from December.

The managing director explained that the company will be deploying a 50 seater passenger ferry, complete with modern facilities, i.e. Wifi, Air Condition, phone charging ports, toilet and bar,
The service which will run daily between Oron and Calabar, will also include scheduled tour services from Le Meridien Marina to Calabar which will help improve travel and tourism between Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers states.

In a similar development, DMOI Smooth Travels, operators of Cally Express has announced that the company is set to commence operations in December 2021 to commemorate the yuletide season.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of DMOI, Mr. Michael Odiong, “the need to create a convenient, safe and secure water transportation system cannot be overemphasized. It is our own way of creating a positive impact on the economies of both states, providing employment, increasing wealth and creating a healthier environment by reducing pollution. take off the pressure from both state governments. We are creating a safer alternative to reduce the time spent on the road by commuters and reignite the perennial relationship that the two states shared on the water ways.

Odiong explained that this is a PPP venture with the Cross River state government to help ease the transportation problem experienced by indigenes of both states.

We are committed to a great service delivery and fun experience for commuters. This seeks to provide employment for the citizenry, create awareness and increase activities of small and medium scale businesses, Odiong stated.

To further prove our commitment, Odiong continued, our team had held meetings with host communities on the coastal route to fashion out modalities for cooperation. We have also built our own jetty in both states with a fully functional car park, security, and an air-conditioned waiting room.

Our booking App will be functional by January 2022. Our jetty is located at Obutong beach in Calabar which is 5 minutes away from Watt market and 15 minutes from the airport while our Uyo jetty is at Ifiayong, Nwaniba, 10 minutes from Ibom plaza, announced Odiong.

Cally Express, Odiong disclosed, is set to commence operation with its inaugural ride on the 7th of December 2021.

PoliticsReport Rates 30 States In Nigeria Dirty, 7 Clean by Hunchogee(op): 7:14am On Dec 05, 2021
A national study group has rated only seven states in Nigeria clean while 30 states are swimming in dirty environments.

According to the National Technical Study Group for Nation’s Cleanliness Performance Index Ratings, the clean states include Akwa Ibom, Abuja, Cross River, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Lagos and Kaduna who scored above 15 per cent out of the 30 per cent on the streets/roads cleanliness indicators.
The report wondered why Nigeria with an estimated population of 270 million people overtake India with a population of 1.4 billion people (a country that has a total world population of 17.7 per cent) ranking second to China with a population of 1.6 billion people to become the country with the highest ranking in open defecation.

“Performance indicators from our studies show that over 172.7 million Nigerians in 2021 are living in unclean environment, compared to 170 million in 2020” it said.

In the study, only four states in the country namely Lagos, Oyo, Abuja and Bauchi have sanitary landfills, while the remaining 33 states operate open dumping.

“This development is not only alarming but calls for urgent intervention in addressing the menace.

On personal hygiene and sanitation only three states (Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Abuja City) scored above 3 per cent of the 10 per cent and can be said to come close to possession of good personal hygiene/sanitation practices in the country

On the average, only four states (Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Kaduna and Bauchi) can be considered to be clean having scored above 40 per cent respectively.

“As observed from our satellite imagery 95 per cent of the states/towns in the country recorded poor performance under the five variables, in our performance indicators (street/road cleanliness, vegetation control/distilting, waste management services, public opinion pool and knowledge and attitude and practice of hygiene and sanitation). Except states like Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi and Kaduna including Abuja metropolis however stepped up their environmental activities during the period under review (2021)” he said.
