There should be gender equality and mutual respect. I personally follow these values and I think the world would be a better place if we men could value our women as equals and women respect us as equals also. Can you imagine that in Saudi Arabia, it is a crime for women to drive cars? Such rubbish arise from the skewed thinking that women are "lesser" beings. We all need to grow up.

There is really no either/or situation here. Religion supports family. Any religion that goes against basic family values should be abolished. That's one reason I advice people to marry those they are religiously compatible with. If a family is founded on similar religious values, there will be no confusion at all.
