Who are the main candidates?
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published its final candidate list in October 2026. Among the leading contenders are Hamzat for the APC and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Rhodes-Vivour contested the 2023 governorship election as the Labour Party candidate. Other parties have also fielded candidates, so the race is not a two-person contest.

Being on the ballot does not make a candidate a strong contender. Party structure, voter recognition, past results, resources, and alliances all matter.

What is Hamzat's record?
Hamzat has been Deputy Governor of Lagos State since 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. He has worked under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu throughout. Before that, he held the Science and Technology and the Works and Infrastructure portfolios.

His record is strongest in digital government. During his time as Commissioner for Science and Technology, he was associated with digital government initiatives. His infrastructure record is harder to isolate. Major public works are delivered by many agencies and administrations, so it would be inaccurate to credit him personally with every project in the period.

As deputy governor, he shares the administration's record, including the budget constraints on major projects. The Fourth Mainland Bridge, for example, had not started construction as of April 2026. In late 2024, Hamzat said the initial budget had tripled and that talks with contractors were continuing.

He has the endorsement of Governor Sanwo-Olu, announced in April 2026. The APC's Governor's Advisory Council later adopted him as its consensus candidate.

What is the strongest case against him?
Hamzat's experience is also his main exposure. Voters can reasonably ask why problems such as traffic, flooding, housing affordability, waste management, and the cost of doing business persist after years of government in which he has served.

He has answered with specific commitments: a stated goal of shorter commutes for residents of four named areas, a pledge to harmonize and enforce levies, and a plan to digitize land administration. Those commitments will be tested against results.

The opposition's strongest argument is that continuity means more of the same. Rhodes-Vivour's 2023 result showed that a substantial share of Lagos voters were willing to back an alternative, and his ADC candidacy is a fresh test of whether that support holds.

Can the running mate change the outcome?
A running mate can broaden a ticket's appeal, strengthen local networks, and add policy credibility. It rarely compensates for weak party organization or a candidate who does not connect with voters. The effect depends on the candidate and the campaign.

So who is likely to win? Based on current evidence, Hamzat has the strongest structural case: executive experience, the ruling party's statewide structure, and the backing of the sitting governor. That makes him the candidate to beat. It is not a guarantee. A united opposition, turnout, and how voters judge the current administration's record could all change the outcome.

The fair test for every candidate is the same: how their promises will be funded, how long they will take, and how progress will be measured. Hamzat should be judged on his stated commitments, and on whether the results show up in residents' daily lives.

The estranged first son of billionaire businessman, Chief Razaq Okoya, Fatai Okoya, has opened up on his alleged attempts to reconcile with his father.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has defended the President’s economic record, citing the support of 33 governors and claiming that food prices have dropped and foreign investors are returning to Nigeria.

Onanuga made the remarks in a post on Friday while reacting to a clip shared by Arise TV on X featuring Obafemi George, a member of the Media and Strategic Communications Committee of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council.

He criticised television anchors for questioning Nigeria’s economic progress under Tinubu, accusing them of promoting the opposition’s narrative that nothing had improved since the President assumed office in 2023.

“TV anchors keep pushing the opposition’s narrative that nothing has changed, positively, indeed, massively, since 2023. Their position has become so ridiculous that they keep parroting the old narrative, and now they question the NBS data on receding inflation. I will advise them to revisit the markets,” he wrote.

The presidential aide claimed that the price of a bag of rice had fallen from about N120,000 to below N50,000, adding that it sold for N45,000 in his hometown.

Onanuga also cited Nigeria’s foreign reserves, access to foreign exchange for businesses and the ability of Nigerians to use naira cards abroad as signs of economic progress under Tinubu.

He said the country’s foreign reserves were approaching $60bn and argued that businesses could now obtain foreign exchange to import raw materials and equipment.

The presidential aide further disputed claims that returning investors were mainly portfolio investors, saying foreign direct investment was bringing capital into the economy and creating jobs.

“These facts are clear to anyone not blinded by partisanship and hatred for the leader who has laid a solid foundation for the economy and is poised to take the nation to a higher level of shared prosperity,” he added.

Advertisements on federal roads and bridges must be approved by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works.

The minister of works, Engineer Dave Umahi, inspected the Niger Bridge, which had been vandalised and saw MTN and other adverts on the bridge. He ordered that the adverts should be removed and replaced with photos of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

However he later discovered that a previous government had given the advertising rights on the bridge to a private company. It was the company that allowed MTN to advertise on the bridge.

Engineer Umahi said that he paid the private company with his own money in order to erect photos of President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima and all the governors of South-East and South-South states on the bridge.

He said that Obidients, who had been complaining about the photos of Tinubu on the bridge, can also pay the company to place their photos on the bridge.

Every government take loans to execute projects but Mr Obi probably knew that he was a big failure as a governor, if he admits he took loans, people would ask him what he did with the money. He had zero legacy project. Not even a single primary school or primary health care centre.
