What you need:

✓A measureing tape (usually reads in cm)
✓Pen & paper
✓Calculator (your phone's calculator is enough)


📐How you should measure it; step-by-step:

1. Stand in the room and measure the length (in centimetres)

Let’s say your tape shows 520cm from one end to the other.

Now convert that to metres:

520 ÷ 100 = 5.2m

Side Note: 100cm = 1 metre. So just divide your cm by 100 to get metres.

2. Measure the width the same way
Let’s say your tape shows 380cm

That’s 380 ÷ 100 = 3.8m


✖ Now multiply the two:

5.2m x 3.8m = 19.76 sqm

Get this straight.

You’re about to install a POP or polystyrene ceiling


And your installer says, “Oga, your living room na 40 square metres.”

How do you know they aren't lying and trying to cut deep into your pocket?

Maybe it’s 30.

Maybe it’s 50.

If you can’t measure it yourself, you’re just guessing and might end up paying more than you should.

Here’s how to measure it yourself using basic tools.


🧰 What you need:

✓A measureing tape (usually reads in cm)
✓Pen & paper
✓Calculator (your phone's calculator is enough)


📐How you should measure it; step-by-step:

1. Stand in the room and measure the length (in centimetres)

Let’s say your tape shows 520cm from one end to the other.

Now convert that to metres:

520 ÷ 100 = 5.2m

Side Note: 100cm = 1 metre. So just divide your cm by 100 to get metres.

2. Measure the width the same way
Let’s say your tape shows 380cm

That’s 380 ÷ 100 = 3.8m


✖ Now multiply the two:

5.2m x 3.8m = 19.76 sqm

That means the ceiling area is 19.76 square metres.

Round up slightly to account for corners or edge work so approximately that is 20sqm, and that’s what you should be charged for.


📦 MATERIAL ESTIMATES (based on your sqm):

POP Ceiling:

1 bag of POP cement covers 5 sqm
So for 20 sqm ÷ 5 = 4 bags of POP cement for casting

Then add like two bags for hanging and dressing the casted boards
You'll also need filas (fiber) for structural strength. 6kg will do for 20 square meter

Polystyrene Ceiling Panels:

1 panel covers 3 sqm
So for 20 sqm ÷ 3 = approx. 7 panels

Screeding Bucket:

1 bucket covers 10–15 sqm
So for 20 sqm ÷ 10 = 2 buckets (to be safe) for Screeding

You'll also need two bags of pop cement for permanent suspension of the polystyrene panels using filas dipped in mixture of pop cement with water, 4kg is enough for 20kg

Also the dressing, that is the screeding. Usually the pop cement will be mixed with the screeding paint to give it pop outlook.


This helps you cross-check when your installer gives you a quote.

If they say you need 10 bags for a 20sqm room, you now know better and you can tell to not worry you'll find transparent, honest people.

All these is to make you stay informed and vigilant especially the measurements to avoid been short changed. The materials qoute I gave is just a rough estimate to give you idea and to tell if you're been cheated.

Bonus Tips:

If your room has an L-shape or unusual edges, break it into two rectangles.

Measure each one, calculate their sqm, and add together.

Don’t let anyone confuse you with blocks or tiles. Always ask for the square metre breakdown.

Confirm if the quoted price includes screeding, painting, centre design, or just installation alone.


> 📏 Side Note reminder:

100 centimetres = 1 metre.

So whenever you're measuring in cm, always divide by 100 to get the correct metres.
