Business / Re: Are There Import Exceptions For Local Branches Of Foreign Companies? by Hynman: 4:48pm On Jun 12, 2010

@Hynman

most of these companies commit a certain% of profit after tax to corporate social responsibilities.thats a way they invest in the country

Really? I only know of FDIs -(foreign direct investments). However, companies on FDIs not only pay less tax, they get major freebies from the government ( for example: read here ). Can you state any source that indicates these foreign companies actually pay % of their profits to any Nigerian entity?

Also, how about the non foreign stores (like Twice as Nice in Palms Mall, Lagos) who also sell imported branded goods. How do they get a pass to import and trade banned goods?
Business / Re: Are There Import Exceptions For Local Branches Of Foreign Companies? by Hynman: 4:36pm On Jun 12, 2010
profosa:

No, Importation of Second hand clothes is banned from Nigeria and not new clothes imported by the likes of wranglers. Please also be informed that there are two categories of import prohibition:prohibited goods(much higher custom tariffs) and absolutely prohibited imports (e.g Gun).Although companies in the gas and agricultural companies could get a custom and import VAT exemptions when they are bringing in equipments and tools.there are usually circulars from CBN,NCS,FIRS and FMF that updates the prohibition list, import VAT and other custom regulations

Profosa, no, I am certain new clothes are also banned from the import list . I hope I am not mistaken - if I am, please state your source - perhaps an update has been made that I am unaware of.

As far as I know, you can import for personal use, such as buying from online stores abroad. However my question is about lagos stores (the foreign ones like Mango/Levi/Wrangler, and local ones like TwiseAsNice) who import branded/new clothes into Nigeria for resale.
Business / Re: Are There Import Exceptions For Local Branches Of Foreign Companies? by Hynman: 1:45am On Jun 12, 2010

These companies you mentioned are already big companies. so what they do is establish franchise in countries like nigeria that needs foreign investment.

Ok. But how exactly are they investing in Nigeria as a nation? They probbly pay less tax to Nigeria compared to normal Nigerian stores. Their lease gets paid to the owners of the malls housing their stores (many nigerian malls are owned by companies like Broll , which are South Africa based)

The only real advantage of having these franchise is to "make Nigeria look better", at least that's how I see it, seeing as they are not opening local factories / manufacturing plants in Nigeria to help the workforce.

So, why exactly do we NEED their foreign investments and if no real benefit is being derived, why should they be exempt from the import laws . I just dont get it sha
Fashion / Shey Selling Imported Wears Is Not Illegal? by Hynman: 9:09pm On Jun 11, 2010
Discussing with a friend yesterday about this so-called ban on imported wears.

If importing clothes is banned, how come shops everywhere are still selling it? Or how is it legal to sell it, but illegal to import it? I'm confused undecided

The friend I was talking with was looking to open a boutique selling imported clthes but someone advised him that selling imported clothes is illegal? I was like, in that case, how come all the shops & boutiques in the malls (like twice as nice) havent been shut down.

I dont understand sha, because when you think about it logically, if importing clothes is banned, then selling imported clothes is likely illegal, but everyone is still selling them. Anyone understand how this works? undecided
Business / Re: Are There Import Exceptions For Local Branches Of Foreign Companies? by Hynman: 6:29pm On Jun 11, 2010
Also, how are some stores (like Twice As Nice & Land of Plenty) able to openly sell imported goods, if imported goods are banne? undecided
Business / Are There Import Exceptions For Local Branches Of Foreign Companies? by Hynman: 5:09pm On Jun 11, 2010
Just asking because, although Nigeria has banned many items from being imported into the country, such as clothes etc, there are foreign companies/stores like Wrangler, Levi, Mango etc with stores in Nigeria.

I'm assuming these stores are allowed to import their products into Nigeria to sell them even though importing clothe into Nigeria is banned. Why is that? Do they have a special licence that exempts them ?
Fashion/Clothing Market / Re: Where Can I Buy Clothes/Accessories Wholesale In Lagos Or In Cotonou? by Hynman: 2:56pm On Apr 09, 2010
Well, I have a wholesale store supplying clothes to boutiques in lagos. The only issue I have with new boutique owners is them wanting the best quality of imported clothes for dirt cheap. I still spoke to one last week looking for "designer clothes" for N500 each. I wished her good luck grin

So, if you have a reasonable budget, I can supply you with wholesale pallets. You can see a very small example of my stock here.

Coincidence? I think not

a) Maxuche signed up on the 22nd of nov JUST to leave reviews
b) on the same day, he left THREE reviews on merchant circle in a pathetic attempt to save their woeful ratings.

Maxuche, if impex is in the hands of daft employees like you, indeed IMPEX is a fast sinking ship. You lost your moral and business compass a LONG time ago.
Travel Ads / Re: Cheapest Way To Ship Goods From USA To Nigeria? by Hynman: 5:44pm On Nov 23, 2009
I can see an impex employee is on here trying to save their ROTTEN, maggot infested, reputation.

Sorry, we are not buying your crap. Morons. You signed up just to make this ONE post. How PATHETIC. Bloody scammers.

Thanks Akhanation.

Everyone who has been burnt using Impex should leave a review on merchant circle here

It will warn online users about them. I wish I had seen their reviews before.

Travel Ads / Re: Cheapest Way To Ship Goods From USA To Nigeria? by Hynman: 5:16pm On Nov 16, 2009
Yes, goods were definately stolen. Around 10 items. The terrible part is they showed no remorse or apology about it whatsoever and accepted no responsibility. They clearly opened the packages to steal the goods.

I have time so I am taking them to court. If they have stolen over $100 worth of goods from you, let me know if you want to put in a joint claim.

What a bunch of thieves. No wonder their business is dwindling. Morons.
Travel Ads / Re: Cheapest Way To Ship Goods From USA To Nigeria? by Hynman: 5:58pm On Nov 14, 2009
Oga o. I'll pick mine up from Monday. undecided

These are goods for other people and each package I sent through them has an invoice/itemized. Each package also has a weight by which I was billed, so a reduction in weight = proof of thievery.

They claim they don't open packages therefore If any item is missing I will definately be filing in the small claims court in New Jersey to cover the loss of goods as well as refund. There are many peoples goods that have gone mysteriously missing from impex so it shouldnt be hard to prove they are theives.

I will also be printing out the terrible accounts of other people to back up my claim and perhaps will be in contact with you all via email to obtain cohesive statements so perhaps you can all claim your losses. It's terrible that they lie and have an awful customer service but stealing goods is way out of line.

I'll receive my package on Monday, then, i'll know how to proceed. I will squeeze the last cent of my goods of them in court if so much as a pin is missing. I havent taken anyone to court this year, perhaps they'll help me break that record. The hand of the law in naija may be short but it's very "long" in the US.

Let me just wait.

@ DAKT, You sound good, but, too new, no reviews. No way to check your references either

Also, I did a quick research on the companies you say you serve and I've found reasons to doubt your validity.

1) KDI Oil and Gas Ltd is registered at the same address as your UK Branch.

-KDI OIL AND GAS LTD, NORTHAMPTON, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, NN2 6NU
-DAKT LOGISTICS LTD Registered No. 06908232 14 OSBORNE ROAD, NORTHAMPTON, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, NN2 6NU

So how can your company be one of your own client?

2) Beks Kimse Nigeria Ltd - The chief executive of this company, Keniebi D. Okoko is also one of the management members of DMaclayton Concepts LLC ( Another company registered at your texas address. )

So again, how can your company be one of your own client?

3) Trying to verify if you serve Silvebird/Chevron/Park and shop will be hard

4) Rockson - You are not listed as their partner although another shipping company is - http://www.rocksonengineering.com/pages/Nigerian_Partners.html

5) Crown Gobal - Never heard of this company.

Phones / Re: Using Glo Mobile Sim In The Uk. by Hynman: 8:57pm On Oct 14, 2009
There is no Glo UK sim. There is the normal naija Glo sim that you can use abroad (roaming) in the UK.
Phones / Using Glo Mobile Sim In The Uk. by Hynman: 5:49pm On Oct 14, 2009
I know Glo Mobile works in the Uk but I'm having a problem finding the correct type of gsm phone to put it in. I have put the SIM in a Motorola V6 (i think it's called v6 -the pink one) but it has zero reception.

Can someone please recommend a phone (something cheap, nothing fancy, nokia prefered) that will work with the Glo mobile sim in the UK?

Thanks! smiley
