PhonesOfficially Revealed In China With Two 3500mah Batteries by iahmed(op): 4:54am On Dec 27, 2016
The Gionee M2017 actually has two 3,500mAh batteries inside, giving the smartphone a total battery size of 7,000mAh. Gionee claims this will give the phone up to nearly 26 hours of continuous video playback. The 5.7-inch phone has a display resolution of 2560 x 1440, and inside sports 6GB of RAM, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

The Gionee M2017 also has dual rear camera lenses, with one with a 12MP sensor and the other with 13MP. It also has an 8MP front-facing camera and a fingerprint sensor. Two features this phone does not have are a microSD card slot or a 3.5mm headphone jack, but it does include a cool looking leather back panel.

There will be two versions of the Gionee M2017 sold in China. One has 128GB of on-board storage for Yuan 6999 (about $1,007) while the version with 256GB of storage is priced at Yuan 6,999 (about $2,446). Obviously, with those kinds of prices, this phone is being made for a very select crowd of consumers. There’s no word on when or if the Gionee M2017 will be released outside of China.

HealthThe Nigerian Boli!(roasted plantain) by iahmed(op): 8:08am On Dec 23, 2016
By Charles Omole
On a recent trip to Lagos, I had an interesting experience which has given me a better understanding of why the mortality rate in our country is so high.

I wanted to have some roasted plantain popularly called Boli. So I sent my PA to buy three. When he returned, I decided it was not fair to eat all three by myself as we were about to embark on a journey to the other end of town.

So I gave one to my driver and one to my PA and I had the last one. About one hour into the journey, I started feeling a bit sick with serious stomach pains. But I ignored it, believing it would go away. I cut short a meeting two hour later due to the continuing pain. It was then I asked my driver and PA if they were feeling OK. To my surprise; they have both been in serious pain for over an hour but did not tell me because they knew how important the meeting I was attending was. To cut the long story short, we quickly agreed that the only thing we all had in common was the Boli we ate.

Some of my Boli was still remaining; so I gave to a friend who had a laboratory to analyse. He came back that the roasted plantain was contaminated with Calcium Carbide. I was shocked.

He later told me that it is a common practice in Nigeria for people to use Carbide to ripen plantain very quickly. The plantain will ripen within 48hrs, even though it would have taken a week or more naturally.

In a 2010 paper “Eating artificially ripened fruits is harmful” Calcium carbide is found to be extremely hazardous to the human body as it contains traces of arsenic and phosphorus. It is banned in many countries of the world, but it is freely used in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria and other poor countries. Thus we are at risk of short-term and long-term health effects simply by eating fruits that are induced to ripen.

Calcium carbide CaC2 is used to easily generate low levels of ethylene gas which can hasten the (outside at least) ripening of fruits like bananas, mangoes etc. But it is also damaging to health. Regular exposure will lead to a build up that can be fatal.

Just before visiting the laboratory to give the sample to my friend, I instructed the driver to drive to a major pharmacy in Lagos nearby to us. They were given some medication that calmed them and countered the effect of the carbide. I had already prayed and reinforced myself by His power in the Inner man. So we all survived it. But imagine those that eat this daily and build up the poison in their system. This is why people die “suddenly” in Nigeria.

So I insisted my driver visits the woman selling the Boli the following day to let her know of our experience. On getting to the woman and explaining, she simply drove him away not to spoil market for her. She was apparently aware of the possible effect of her use of carbide but was too profit focused to care. People around her later said they have always wondered why she never eats her own Boli but buy food from others around.

Needless to say, that was my last Boli of the trip. Now I am not saying all Boli in Nigeria are poisonous. Given that the use of carbide is prevalent, how do you know which plantain is not contaminated? So if you are travelling to Nigeria, be careful what you eat and where you eat. And for those that live in Nigeria, it is possible you may have built some tolerance for this poison (due to regular ingestion), but regular consumption will cause long-term health damage and could be fatal.

This greed-driven practice is common in our nation and we all need to be on guard to avoid unnecessary complications. Wisdom is profitable to direct. God help our people.

FINAL NOTE:
Calcium Carbide is a dangerous and corrosive chemical. Carbide ripened fruit on consumption cause several harmful effects to human health. It has cancer causing properties and contains traces of arsenic and phosphorous hydride. Consumption of fruits ripened with Calcium Carbide causes stomach upset because the alkaline substance is an irritant that erodes the mucosal tissues in the stomach and disrupts intestinal functions.

According to experts; The early symptoms of carbide poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea with or without blood, burning sensation of the chest and abdomen, thirst, weakness, difficulty in swallowing, irritation or burning in the eyes and skin, permanent eye damage, ulcers on the skin, irritation in the mouth, nose and throat. Throat sores, cough, and wheezing and shortness of breath may also occur soon after exposure to the chemical. Higher exposure may cause a build-up of fluids in the lungs. For instance; eating artificially ripened mangoes causes stomach upset because the alkaline substance is an irritant that erodes the mucosal tissue in the stomach and disrupts intestinal function. Chronic exposure to the chemical could lead to peptic ulcer.

Lawmakers in the French capital vote
to set up designated clothes-free area
on city’s edge
Paris could set up a park for nudists
as early as next summer, in a possible
first for a capital city, in a country that
is the world’s top destination for
clothes-free leisure lovers.
Paris lawmakers voted late on
Monday to approve a proposal by
ecologists to set up the zone, possibly
in one of two major wooded areas on
the edge of the city.
Naturism “is developing and Paris so
far has nowhere” to practise it, said
David Belliard, co-chair of the
ecologist group in the city council.
He noted that 2
million French
people practise
naturism, which
is already
possible in
several European
cities including
Barcelona, Berlin
and Munich.
With more than 100 clothes-free
beaches and numerous holiday
camps, France is the world’s No 1
destination for naturists, said Bruno
Julliard, deputy to Paris’s socialist
mayor, Anne Hidalgo.
Describing the “respectable demand”
for somewhere to bare all in the
French capital, he said the next step
was to choose a location.
This could be in one of Paris’s two
main woods – the Bois de Boulogne to
the west, and Bois de Vincennes to the
east – “near a lake, in a regulated
setting so that there is no threat to
public order,” he added.

PoliticsMissing Projects: Buhari To Return 2016 Budget To NASS by iahmed(op): 6:53am On Apr 10, 2016
*Lagos-Calabar N60 billion coastal railway removed
*Idu-Kaduna rail line cut by N8.7 billion
*Major federal roads slashed
*Polio eradication, essential drugs for HIV/AIDS expunged
*Agric/water resources re-allocated to constituency projects
By Soni Daniel
PresidentMuhammadu Buhari appears set to return the 2016 Budget to the National Assembly to rework because what the lawmakers sent to him on Thursday for assent, according to Presidency sources, fell below his expectations.
By implication, Buhari will not sign the Appropriation Bill into law, as earlier planned, before jetting out of the country this weekend to China for economic and business deals for Nigeria.
The sources confirmed toSunday Vanguardthat the President felt disappointed that provisions for major national projects and programmes that could turn around the economy were either outrightly removed or funds for them ridiculously slashed by the lawmakers.
It will be recalled that, in a bid to urgently assent to the bill, which was transmitted to him on Thursday, the Presidency had convened an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Friday where the document was distributed to Ministers to review as it affected their respective ministries, departments and agencies.
At the review meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is the Head of the Economic Team, it was discovered that many strategic projects were either removed or provisions made for them significantly slashed to the point that made a mockery of the projects.

Among the key projects removed from the budget by the lawmakers are the all-important Calabar-Lagos coastal rail line for which Buhari had made a provision of N60 billion in the 2016 estimates.
Incidentally, the railway project is one of the key issues taking Buhari to China.
While that was removed, the lawmakers left the Kano/Lagos railway project untouched but also went ahead to reduce the amount set aside for the completion of the Idu/Kaduna railway project, which has reached an advanced stage of completion, by N8.7 billion.
A top government official, who was privy to the fiscal document, summed the discoveries in the budget that shocked Buhari this way: “At the meeting, it was noticed that some very key aspects of the budget, which have to do with government’s core infrastructural focus, were removed. One of the projects is the subject of the President’s trip to China – the Lagos/ Calabar coastal railway project – for which a counterpart funding of N60bn was provided, but which was completely removed by the National Assembly.
“The executive is working on two major rail arteries, among other rail projects, to service the northern and eastern parts of the country – the Lagos/Kano line and the Calabar/Lagos line. While the Lagos-Kano provision was left untouched, the Calabar/ Lagos line was removed. The projects are to be funded jointly by governments of China and Nigeria. It is one of the main reasons for the President’s scheduled trip to China.
“Also, the amount proposed for the completion of the Idu/Kaduna rail project which has reached an advanced stage, was reduced by N8.7bn, a development which will make it difficult for the project to be completed”.
The source added that another fundamental area noticed in the document was the completion of on-going road projects.
It was learnt that while the executive had provided for the completion of all major road projects across the country, the National Assembly reduced the amounts provided and instead included new roads which studies have not even been conducted.
The source lamented: “The amounts provided by the National Assembly for the projects can neither complete the on-going road projects nor the new ones proposed. At the end of the year, no progress would have been made”.
According to the source, a top Presidency official, allocations for the purchase of essential drugs for major health campaigns like polio and AIDS for which the store is fast depleting, were removed and the amounts allocated to provision of ambulance, which the health ministry did not ask for.
“It was also observed that certain provisions made in the areas of agriculture and water resources to further the Federal Government’s diversification project were either removed or reduced while the funds were moved to provisions of rural health facilities and boreholes, for which provisions have been made elsewhere,” the official said.
“The President is desirous of signing the Bill into law so that implementation of the provisions could begin in earnest for the benefit of the people. That is why the moment he received the document on Thursday,a meeting was convened for Friday to immediately start work on it”,the source concluded.
