17 Jobs For The Elegant Gentleman

October 8, 2015/43 Comments/in Gentleman's Query, Gentlemen of Style, Leadership, Savoir Vivre /by J.A. Shapira
When it comes to the elegant gentleman, his lifestyle is generally reflective of his sense of style, his attitude and his desires. He appreciates the finer things in life and lives his life elegantly.
In today’s economy, most of us spend the vast majority of our waking hours at work. For many, it is an enjoyable use of our time, but for others it’s dreadful. For an aspiring gentleman, work can be another sartorial outlet, and certain professions are more style-oriented than others. Therefore, we thought we’d compile a list of careers – though hardly comprehensive – that suit the lifestyle of the elegant gentleman.
Before we get started, it’s important to note that in this day in age, a “gentleman” is no longer a titled bestowed only upon the wealthy, titled set. Today, a man chooses to be a gentleman through his actions, character, conversation, and style, among many other characteristics. A career (and susequent earnings) should in no way be considered the most important measure of a gentleman, but it can be another venue for style concious men to express themselves.

Fashion / Service Looks: Dressing In A Kingdom Ways by iamjadewale(m): 1:47pm On Aug 30, 2015
The so-called "worship wars" of recent years may have produced a winner. Many congregations remain divided between traditional and contemporary styles, but in most places the contemporary appears to have gained the upper hand.
What's more, our worship services have become increasingly relaxed and informal affairs. You can see it in what we wear. Church for today's worshipers is not a dress-up event. Whatever is clean and comfortable seems sufficient. Christian students in particular have been taught by their seniors — or has it been the reverse?— that when it comes to church, attire doesn't much matter. They understand there is nothing particularly spiritual about a dress or a coat and tie. God is scarcely impressed by such things. "People look at the outward appearance," we are reminded, "but the LORD looks at the heart" (1 Sam. 16:7).
I do not intend to wade into the broader debate over worship styles; that's a different discussion. In any case, I'm content with either traditional or contemporary if they're done well. But I do wish to raise a question about this last notion: namely, that when it comes to public worship, our clothing doesn't matter. This common assumption, it seems to me, deserves more scrutiny than it typically receives.
Over the last several generations, Attire in general has lurched dramatically toward the informal. A feature that quickly dates an old photograph, for instance, is the men wearing fedoras; most today wouldn't know where to find one. Those who are old enough can remember when travelers got spiffed up to board an airplane. Today's travelers think nothing of flying in duds they might wear to the gym. Or consider the rise of the term "business casual." In most parts of the country, though not all, even the corporate setting has grown less formal.
These changes are part of a broad shift toward the convenient and comfortable. It's a shift we see on display every week in our worship services. In many churches casual wear is de rigueur. It's easy to imagine how one might look over-dressed there, but less easy, short of immodesty, to imagine being under-dressed. Jeans or shorts, tee shirts or tank tops, flip-flops or sandals: these draw scarcely any attention, while full dresses or a suit and tie appear strangely out of place. Relaxed, even rumpled informality is in; suiting up in our "Sunday best" is out. The question I want to raise here is, What should we make of this shift in worship attire?
Many seem convinced it's a good thing, because, again, it's the heart that counts. Yet precisely for this reason—because it's the heart that counts—I want to suggest that what we wear in our public worship may matter more than we think. To grasp this connection, let us draw on some helpful insights from the field of communication.
Verbal and Nonverbal

Verbal behavior refers to all those ways we use language to communicate: speaking, writing, sign language, etc. Nonverbal behavior focuses on all those ways we communicate without words: facial expression, gesture, posture, eye behavior, vocal inflection ("paralanguage"wink, our use of space ("proxemics"wink, or touch behavior. Some experts estimate that in our everyday relationships only a small percentage of what we communicate is conveyed via verbal channels. The rest is conveyed nonverbally.
Of special interest here is that avenue of nonverbal communication we will call physical appearance and dress. Here are seven observations drawn from the literature on this aspect of our human interaction:
The wearing of clothing is exclusively a human characteristic. We share many attributes with other creatures, but the inclination to clothe ourselves is not one of them. Those who know the account of Adam and Eve will understand why this is so. There is a moral and even spiritual dimension to human clothing.
Our clothes serve a variety of practical, social, and cultural functions. Protection and modesty spring first to mind, but our clothes do far more. We sometimes dress to conceal or deceive. More often our clothes serve to reveal. We use clothing for decoration, for sexual attraction, for self-expression and self-assertion. By our attire we display our gender, our religion, our occupation, our social position, or causes with which we identify (e.g., sports jerseys). Our apparel may express our group membership or our role in society (e.g., company or police uniforms). Many dress to impress, while others choose the reverse: they express their rejection by intentionally flouting accepted clothing norms.
Our clothing is one of our most elemental forms of communication. Long before our voice is heard, our clothes are transmitting multiple messages. From our attire, others immediately read not only such things as our sex, age, national identity, socio-economic status, and social position, but also our mood, our attitudes, our personality, our interests, and our values.
We constantly make judgments about one another on the basis of clothing. Common wisdom has it that you can't judge a book by its cover. But this is only partly true; we regularly read one another's covering. What's more, we're better at it than we think. Research suggests that if you stand someone before an audience of strangers and ask them to draw inferences merely on the basis of what they see, the audience's inferences will tend toward consensus, and those inferences will tend to be more or less accurate. Why should this be? We spend our lives making judgments based on appearance and then testing those judgments in our subsequent relationships. In this way, we become rather adept at the process. Judgments based on appearance are scarcely infallible, of course, and we are wise to hold them tentatively. But it's almost impossible to avoid making them in the first place.
Because our clothing is one of the fundamental ways we communicate with others, what we wear is never a purely personal matter. Our attire exerts a social influence on those around us. One famous study, for example, discovered that unwitting subjects were significantly more willing to jaywalk when following individuals wearing "high status" clothing than when following individuals wearing "low status" clothing. What we wear can shape patterns of communication around us, depending on what messages people are picking up. Consider, for example, the varied cues we send by the way we dress: "I want people to notice me." "I'm very confident." "I want to hide." "I care only about comfort." "I want to look seductive." "I repudiate you and your expectations."
How we dress not only affects others; it also affects us. This dynamic is often circular: how we feel influences the clothes we put on, and the clothes we put on in turn shape how we feel. Changes of clothes can generate a change of mood; the soldier feels different in his uniform than he does in street clothes. In some settings our choice of attire can make or break us. If we like the way we look for a job interview, for instance, it will tend to strengthen our confidence. We feel better about our chances, as reflected in improved posture, more fluent speech, more dynamic gestures. On the other hand, inappropriate dress can sap our confidence. We have all experienced the uncomfortable effects of feeling under-dressed in a particular social setting.
Much of the social meaning of our clothing is contextual. The appropriateness of our dress is often dictated by the situation. Dress that would send a given message in one setting might send a very different message in another. Picture, for example, a young woman dressed in hiking boots, sweatshirt, and shorts. Around a campfire the message might be, merely, "I'm ready for the trail." Choosing that same outfit for her aunt's funeral would say something rather different. Regional variations and issues of local dress loom large. Times change, values change, situations change; what was proper ten years ago may not be proper today, or vice versa.

Fashion / Guilde To Shirt Tuck Or Untuck by iamjadewale(m): 11:50am On Aug 26, 2015
GUILDE TO SHIRT TUCK OR UNTUCK
A style war has long divided those at the office and even good friends. One simple difference of opinion. Is it tucked? Or un tucked?
No, I'm not talking about cosmetic surgery and the doing away of beer-belly fat. I'm referring to the rules governing when – and where – one should tuck in a button-down shirt, as opposed to leaving it out.
Whether for or against the tradition of shirt-tucking, the evolution of men's style proves it has good reason to stick around. So, get ready to tuck it (when you have to) and learn to master those occasions when it's OK to let it all hang out.
Breaking it down
Shirt tucking offers a more refined, polished look to even the most simple of outfits. And it's very much occasion-appropriate: tucked for corporate and formal settings and untucked for casual wear and, dress-code permitting, smart casual events.
Then, there's the shirt structure. Shirts that are made with a flat 'bottom' hem are designed to be untucked (but have the option of tucking if the occasion asks for it).
But if the shirt has visible shirttails (think the rise and fall of the hem, which is longer at the front and back of the shirt) then the design implies that the shirt must be tucked-in. Despite this, there are sometimes exceptions to rule. Let's help you out.
Tailored and tucked

Except for a random few hipster creatives who'll try anything to start a workplace trend, the shirttails of button-downs have always been (and should be) tucked into your pants. Ignore this rule, and expect to look clumsy and messy in the office; simultaneously destroying all the hard work you put into buying the perfect business suit.
Trouser separates (without a jacket) and business shirting should follow the same rule. Even those sweater-wearers, who insist on letting the tails hang out below their knit, have to be retold: it's a contrived way of looking fashionably dishevelled. And instead, feels more like a stunt a school boy might pull-out, to feel more like a rebel.
Collared shirting with 'tailored' jeans or chinos is another tucked-in option. But this time, it's not essential. If your button-down shirt falls more than 3 inches past your belt, tuck it. And, the nature of the jeans (serving as a smart casual bottom) means the shirt looks great tucked; giving off a European feel instead of looking like aSeinfield character.

Fashion / Http://desynme..com/2015/08/guilde-on-seersucker-suit.html by iamjadewale(m): 1:29pm On Aug 22, 2015
What in your opinion are the five most egregious seersucker mistakes?
Oh man, getting somebody who designs in seersucker to talk down on anything about it is tough. But, okay i would say number one, obvious, biggest one is fit. Seersucker is a vertical stripe, it has volume and it's not a very drapy fabric. So if it's not nice and fitted to your true body size, it can look pretty ridiculous. If you're gonna wear a full suit,or any part of a suit it's gotta be nice and tailored.

So are there rules for tailoring? I mean know a Haspel suit comes with a great fit, but if you find yourself needing to take it to the tailor, are there certain rules for seersucker that wouldn't apply to like a solid color?
Well anything that's striped elongates your torso. It can be advantageous or it can look too long. You don't want to over-exaggerate length, so you want to make sure that your sleeves are at the proper height. When it comes to the hem, in my opinion since it's the summer, I wouldn't have a break in the pants, I would definitely have them be ankle high.

Fashion / Beginners Guide To Styling And Growing A Beard by iamjadewale(m): 1:08pm On Aug 22, 2015
1) “Man it up” and just wait. It’s only temporary and will pass shortly.
2) Apply ample amounts of moisturizer like a beard oil, or other product. Try to avoid moisturizures with alcohol in there as they actually dry out your skin.
3) In the early stubble phase (day 1 or 2) use Soft Goat scruff softener. This product is designed to help make stubble softer and more kissable.
At this stage, you shouldn’t be using a shampoo as the length is still fairly short. I’d recommend using a natural bar of soap that doesn’t have irritant chemicals in them (like sodium laurth sulfate). There are a lot of soap options out there, and one I’ve personally used and enjoyed is Rocky Top Soap.
Once you get through the itchy phase, you’ll get to the point where your beard will look untidy. To neaten up your look, I recommend trimming the neckline, upper cheeks, and mustache lip. If you are going for the yeard, or natural beard, you should leave your beard untouched.
At this point is when we lose the most amount of beards. Men will typically get a little ambitious with their razors, cut too much and then shave the entire thing off. Because of the risk of mistakes, I recommend waiting at least a month to trim if possible.
Most new beardsmen trim the neckline too high. The ideal location for the line is where the neck meets the head.So whatever your beard area is parallel with the ground, do not trim; whatever is parallel with the world infront of you, then it’s ok to trim.
The reality is that it’s very little of your beard that you are trimming. You shouldn’t need to look up to trim and aim to shape a nice round curve from one ear to the next.
When trimming the mustache, I recommend you use a pair of scissors over clippers. This will give you a little more control and only cuts a few hairs at a time. With the cheek line try to go with your natural line and only trim off the one or two stragglers that are outside that line.
If you have a very dense cheek, you should trim no lower than the bottom of your nose.

WHITE SHIRT GUILD
THREE DIFFERENT WAYS ON HOW TO WEAR YOUR WHITE SHIRTS
desynme
A plain white shirt or button-up, is nominated as one of the most versatile menswear in men fashion[1]  not without a reason. It can be paired with numerous outfits, creating different fashion statements in each and every look. Here are three ways that you can wear a white shirt for every occasion.

Casual
For casual occasions during the weekends, you could pair a white shirt with chino pants or washed denim for a relaxed yet cool look. Be sure to let your shirt loose without tucking it in, adding the sense of casual and relaxed at the same time. A loose white shirt will help create the off-duty look but still in style with its button-down collar.

Fashion / Six Outstanding Duos Design by iamjadewale(m): 4:52pm On Aug 05, 2015
Sienna and Savannah Miller
Is it just us, or are sisters totally ruling the fashion world right now? It was Balmain’s AW15 campaign that first got us thinking about the trend, followed by the announcement that Kendall and Kylie Jenner are to turn their fiercely manicured hands to design. …

Kendall and Kylie Jenner
After testing the water on sell-out collaborations with Pac Sun and Topshop, Kendall and Kylie are officially launching their own contemporary line, titled, Kendall + Kylie, duh. ‘Designing is something that we’ve always wanted to do, and I think it’s really cool to kind of step back and put the looks together and be a part of the shoot when it’s a different model modelling it and actually being the creative person behind it,’ Kendall told WWD. We’re predicting strong heels, off-duty model denim and a whole lotta bodycon.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
Perhaps the most famous of all sister design duos, Mary-Kate and Ashley turned their Dualstar entertainment company into a high fashion empire in 2006, when they launched their contemporary line Elizabeth and James and premium collection, The Row. Now one of NYFW’s hottest tickets, The Row’s subtly luxurious designs are loved by fashion editors the world over.

Sienna Miller and Savannah Miller
Sienna and Savannah launched Twenty 8 Twelve in 2007 (the height of our infatuation with Sienna’s trademark boho style) and became a firm fixture on the London Fashion Week schedules. The pair stepped down as co-creative directors in 2012, with Savannah launching her own eponymous line.

Fashion / Tips On How To Wear Leather For The Summer by iamjadewale(m): 2:58pm On Aug 05, 2015
Think leather is just for winter? Think again. It's undoubtedly one of the trickiest trends to master, but when carefully styled, summer leather is about as chic as it gets. And to ensure we're suitably prepared, we're looking to those savvy celebs for some top styling tips on how to re-work our beloved leather.

Naturally, black is at the forefront colour-wise, followed swiftly by tan and rich berry hues. Among those classic leather shades is navy. Yes, navy is all kinds of cool when it comes to wearing summer leather, and will work well with anything in your current wardrobe.

You might want to consider the new shapes on offer. As much as super-skinny, luxe-looking leather trews will always hold a place in our hearts (and wardrobes) there are plenty of new shapes and styles on offer this season, that are far easier to wear, and often, far more figure-flattering.

Olivia Palermo leads the charge for dungarees, wearing her version with an equally chic cold shoulder top, sheer pointed courts and a suitably statement necklace. The message here is clear, dress up your leather by wearing all black everything.

Championing the leather A-Line dress is Kate Mara, who rocks hers with some barely-there heels and subtle lip colour.

While Rosie Huntington-Whiteley makes a strong case for the low-rise, cropped biker trouser, styling her pair with pointed courts, a white cut-out tee, a bucket bag and a sleek black belt.

Fashion / Uzo Aduba's Sleeveless Dress Is What We Want To Wear All Summer by iamjadewale(m): 4:57pm On Aug 03, 2015
Cleverly, its pattern includes the colors orange and black.

While onstage talking "Orange is the New Black" in Beverly Hills on Tuesday,Uzo Aduba made a subtle nod to the show's title in a clever way. Her L.K. Bennett white sundress was covered in an abstract print of orange and black. Fine, there's some sky blue in there too, but the connection still stands.
The colorful sleeveless dress has a wide long skirt, perfect for sitting up on stage without exposing too much leg. Her white pumps accented by tassels on the heels unified the entire look in a polished way. It's refreshing to see Aduba with her long hair down since we are so used to seeing it up in her character's signature buns. As with many of the women from the prison show — or any costume-heavy series, for that matter — it's still delightful to spot an actress click to read more

CUT IT OUT!: A Call For Action with a Cutting Edge
By H.M. Shaw
Does this make you uncomfortable? A little bit jarred? A lot a bit red hot? Pissed? The man may be sporting the uniform, but doesn’t he seem more cowardly than heroic? The young army wife may be scantily clad, but doesn’t her exposed flesh make us think that her body is and will continue to be imposed upon again and again?

At first impression this may seem like yet another frightening fashion fantasy—no different than what we see in television, film, music videos, and even video games. So what is another play-by-play of a power struggle between a man and woman, right? But we dare you to tell that to those who fight every day or continue live with the aftermath of these daily battles here in the real world. The abrasions and tears replace security and respect when someone decides to abuse their partner whether sexually, physically, mentally, or emotionally.
For a recent photoshoot , photographer Cheryl Gorski wanted to deliver a much deeper message that goes beyond Doc Martins and dark eye make-up. Cut It Out may center around re-cycled surplus digs and the ’90s revival, but this spread is first and foremost about the harrows of partner abuse. Notice that these models are dressed (and undressed) to represent individuals torn between the suffering as a means of survival and a false sense of security.
“Most victims, survivors, and abusers are so attracted to one another that somehow in the relationship passion fused with jealousy, insecurity, and fear results in abuse,” said Gorski. “If there wasn’t love in the mix, there wouldn’t be tolerance.”

The power of the military aesthetic used in this shoot should be taken into account. Gorski went on to share that she was inspired by the prevalence of partner abuse in military families. Aside from raising awareness, having partners shown as wounded soldiers or soldiers’ partners is used to remind us that abuse is an ongoing battle for those entangled in the violence as well as for our society as a whole.
In fact, Uncle Sam’s Army Navy Outfitters‘ owner Robert Geist, and VP of branding, Lou Schreiber, enthusiastically participated in this project in hopes to shed light on domestic violence in the armed services.
The wardrobe for for this project was meant to match a raw depiction of a war-torn world that exists in abusive partnerships—a war that wages on the lives of abusers and survivors. OMI of Saione and stylist Edward Lewis put much heart into every piece reconstructed and deconstructed in order to amplify this shoot’s deafening storyline. For instance, Lewis’ mosquito net dress is more than just sexy mesh. This reconstructed frock mirrors the fragile state that one is left in during and after being victimized by a loved one.
As for OMI’s newly imaged fatigues, these were ideal for costuming a male who is locked into a macho role. Let us not forget, when a man is abusive, he is certain that he is asserting himself. If a man is being abused, he often feels that he must continue to hide behind the “tough-guise,” if you will, as a means of hiding shame and humiliation.click to read more and see more photos http://desynme..com/2015/08/cut-it-out-call-for-action-with-cutting.html

Fashion / 10 Things To Know About Wearing Hair Accessory Like A Grown Up by iamjadewale(m): 9:42am On Aug 03, 2015
We’re calling it—hair accessories are back in a big way. From simple to elaborate, you can easily switch up your look from blah to brilliant in a few seconds. However, pulling off a flower crown or silk turban isn’t for your average wallflower. The nerve-wracking fear of looking like you are starring in a period piece might be enough to make you avoid the look altogether. So, we gathered a round table of savvy hair accessory designers to teach us how to rock these bold looks with confidence. Get ready to tie one on in style!
What’s Old Is New Again:
“Hair accessories have been around for ages—kings and queens were the first ones to jump on the trend,” shares Jennifer Behr, CEO and head designer of her namesake label. “Hair accessories are not so much making a resurgence, but rather they are finally getting the attention they deserve. The designs have also gotten a lot more sophisticated. Ten years ago when I started, hair accessories were purely functional—there was no fashion element.”

Wear What You Want (No Really):
“I feel that there are no real rules when it comes to personal style,” shares Eric Styles of The Turban Guy. “As long as you feel good and are confident, own your look. Some woman find hair accessories [specifically turbans] intimidating, but think of them the same way you think of a good pump. You can be wearing a tank top and jeans but once you put on a pump, it brings a certain polish to the look. The same can be said of a turban.”
#Werk It at Work
: “Wearing your hair down, with just the front pulled back off your face, paired with a simple headband, is an easy, chic office look,” explain Kailee Steward and Erin Frederick, co-owners of I’m With The Band. “Our scarf turbans look just as chic worn the same way. Plus, they also look great worn with a low bun or ponytail.”
Look Your Age:
“First off, look for pieces that are good quality,” explains Styles. “A lot more designers are incorporating metal and stone details to the hair accessories that add an adult spin to them. Try to avoid items that are really small or overly ‘girly’ ( i.e. small plastic flowers, colorful butterflies and tiny bows)—look for things that have a certain sophistication like gold accents, lace and feathers.”

Look Stylish (at Any Length):
“Short and long hair can both wear all of my headbands and wraps,” shares Behr, who’s celeb fans include Madonna, Katy Perry and Lauren Conrad. “I had short hair for years, and headbands were actually great because otherwise you don’t get much variety in styling. If you have a lot of volume in your hair, I would suggest a bigger, solid headband. If your hair texture is fine, I would suggest a barrette to pin it half up half down to give your locks a boost. For short hair, a bobby pin pulling a piece of hair back adds some flare.”

Top 6 Weding Favor Mistakes to Avoid
Who hasn’t been to a wedding and looked forward to receive wedding favors?
For those who’re wondering what wedding favors are, they are small gifts presented to guests as a ‘thank you’ and token of appreciation from the married couple on their wedding day. Typically, wedding favors are part of the table decoration at the wedding reception.

Not everyone knows that wedding favors have a grand history.
In the past, the upper class Europeans, especially those from France and Italy, would give each wedding guest a sugary treat known as Bonbonnieres, encased on a trinket box. Those were the days when sugar was symbolic of prosperity, royalty and was an expensive commodity. The trinket boxes were made of ceramic or metal and adorned with precious stones.
As time passed, sugar became less expensive and people started using it on a day-to-day basis. This is how the tradition of handing out wedding favors passed on to the middle and the lower classes, and was no longer the norm of just the elite.
Gradually, Bonbonnieres were replaced with almonds as wedding favors. In the 13th century, sugar-coated almonds or Jordan almonds were used. This tradition continues even today at many a wedding reception.
Marriage, which is a union of two individuals, came to be perceived as a lucky occasion. The bride and the groom would offer their guests five Bonbonnieres/Jordan almonds to share this luck. These five sweets stood for health, wealth, fertility, happiness and longevity.
In modern weddings, the favor presented is more in keeping with the theme of the wedding/reception, or simply in tandem with the bride and the groom’s lifestyle.
In fact, there isn’t a particular definition to what can be presented as favors in weddings these days. Even as the convention of giving a present to convey ‘thank you’ to the guest continues, there are no formal recommendations to what the favors should be like. Whether you choose to hand out readymade favors or hand-made ones, ensure that you go with something that is specific to your wedding.
Here are a few wedding favors mistakes that are commonly made, but need to be avoided.

Gifting Something Cheap
If you’re expecting a lot of guests at your wedding, know that giving out favors will be a costly affair. That, however, does not mean you skimp on them and hand out something just for the sake of it. If you’re buying cheap wedding favors, you’re only going to end up wasting money. It is suggested to hand-make something instead. For instance, you can prepare mason jar wedding favors with homemade sugar cookies. Fun, simple and sweet! click to read more

Spectator Shoe Guide
Spectator & Two Tone Shoes Guide

I remember very distinctly what my first pair of spectator shoes looked like: they were Derbies with light brown and off-white uppers. The brown part was brogued, and I wore them rather frequently with navy pants, but they always looked best with brown slacks. Today, I still wear spectators occasionally, and I receive many compliments on them. However, I also know that many men believe they can’t pull off wearing this bold shoe. In short, you absolutely can! Today, I’d like the share our guide about two-tone spectator shoes that will help you set aside any anxiety and enjoy the shoes for what they are – beautiful pieces of footwear that are particularly suited to wear in summer.

What is A Spectator Shoe?
Simply put, the spectator is a shoe with two different colors. It doesn’t matter if it is an Oxford, a Derby or a Loafer, all that matter that is has two distinct tones on the upper.
Purists would like to limit the contrasting colors to black/white or brown/white and insist upon all leather materials. However, you can find all kinds of other variations, for example in navy/gray velour leather, black/beige leather and fabric or light brown/dark brown leather. Basically, the options are endless, and that gives you the benefit of choosing a color combination that suits you.
Despite that, the majority of spectators are wingtip oxfords in either white/black or white/brown. The use of white makes them more summery.
Sometimes, you will find shoes that are even more narrowly defined, such as the saddle shoe with its contrasting middle part – the saddle. Although it is technically a spectator, it is always referred to as saddle shoe because it describes the style more narrowly.

Fashion / Staying In Vogue With Camel Coat by iamjadewale(m): 9:17pm On Jul 30, 2015
STAYING IN VOGUE WITH CAMEL COAT

IT SHOULD COME as no surprise that camel coats are no longer made of actual camel's hair. "It's just a little wiry," said Karl Aberg, men's design director at Marc Jacobs. "Today's customer really wants that soft touch." Modern fabric options include wool, alpaca, synthetics and blends thereof. But while the materials differ, the essential idea remains: It's a tailored coat, hovering around the knee, that comes in any number of shades of toasty, caramel-y beige.
Though no longer directly linked to its namesake species of four-legged mammal, the camel coat kept its name, and its spot in the canon of menswear. It's a versatile piece with lasting appeal. Perhaps that's why so many menswear designers—Gieves & Hawkes, Marc Jacobs, Berluti and Ami, to name a few—showed camel coats on their runways for fall. "I think men are less tricky than the industry thinks," said Gieves chief creative officer Jason Basmajian. "They always go back to classics that always look great."
This coat certainly delivers. "It's just really easy to wear," added Mr. Basmajian. "You can take it in that sporty direction, but you can also really dress it up." Indeed, it looks great over a suit as well as jeans and a basic sweater. And the neutral shade pairs just as well with blacks and grays as it does with more colorful, adventurous palettes.
Here, we evaluate three brands' latest updates of this fuzzy classic

EVERY MAN MUST OWN A COAT

Styling For Spring
Spring is arguably the toughest time of year to dress with any great confidence. You can leave the house under thick grey clouds and a wall of drizzle, only to find yourself enjoying your lunch on a sunlit terrace, and making your way back home in the bracing cold come evening.

Luckily, there are plenty of outer layers that are bound to make your life considerably easier over the coming months. Here we break down our top five spring jackets, from relaxed to buttoned-up, subtle to statement-making…
The Safari Jacket
Based on the British khaki drill military jacket, the safari jacket has traditionally been a four-pocket lightweight cotton silhouette designed specifically for hot climates, hence the name. It conjures up images of early 20th century British archaeologists digging away in Egypt, or Roger Moore’s James Bond in Moonraker – neither of which is immediately suggestive of a style classic, but allow us to elaborate.
