Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday said one of the best ways Nigeria can immortalise the late winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief M.K.O Abiola, is to entrench viable democracy, just as he said that such can only be achieved through the practice of true federalism which is currently not in place in the country. Governor Ambode, who spoke in Lagos at a event organised by the State's Office of Civic Engagement to mark the 23rd Anniversary of June 12, said Nigeria owe the late Abiola a duty to entrench democracy in the system and practice it the right way. Speaking on the theme: "Democracy And Inclusiveness: Basis For Good Governance," Governor Ambode, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, said June 12 would continued to be remembered, but that the country must be prepared to travel through the journey of ensuring the right things are done in proper ways. He said: "This is a day we must continue to remember because we have been practicing democracy and at the end of the day, we are not actually doing what we should be doing. If you look at the topic of today, it says Democracy and Its Inclusiveness, what we have today, we still have a long way to go, and that is to say that we are not practicing true federalism. "What we owe Nigeria today is nothing but true Federalism and for us to be able to achieve true federalism, we have to work hard for it and that is the message the Governor has asked me to deliver. "We still have a long way to go. If you want to live by Abiola’s memory, if you want to honour him, we owe him a duty to ensure that we install a viable democracy and that viable democracy can only be installed if we have true federalism which we are presently not practicing, and that is very important," he said. The Governor added that the federating units of the country must be allowed to develop at their own pace, saying that it was important for the country address the very evident wrongs of the past. He said: "For us in Lagos here, Lagos as it is today has everything to stand by its own. We run the police, we have the most viable infrastructure in the whole country, yet we are not given what we deserve. "Look at the number of Local Governments we have, if we run true federalism, we would not be having 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 20 Local Governments. We should be able to create the number of Local Governments that we desire," he said. In his remarks, Chairman of the occasion and General Secretary of National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Pa Ayo Opadokun urged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently recognize late Abiola as a former President of Nigeria and name a national monument after him. Opadokun lamented that it was unfortunate that former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who he described as the major beneficiary of the June 12 struggle, failed to accord Abiola the due recognition throughout his eight year-tenure, but urged the Federal Government to right the wrongs to Abiola by paying his family for the crippling of his businesses during the struggle. Besides, Opadokun said it was unthinkable that Nigeria, which is the eighth largest exporter of oil, still has the poorest people in the world, adding that the country may not get out of the wood until the restructuring of the skewed and lopsided national structure. Opadokun also called for urgent address of injustice in the system, saying the federation must be reconfigured to make every Nigerian equal and totally remove the traces of injustice and unfairness. He said: "For instance, in 1960, there were four political divisions in Lagos and two in Kano. As we speak, Jigawa State has been created out of Kano with 27 Local Government Areas, while Kano itself has 44, making a total of 71. Lagos, on the other hand, has just 20 Local Government Areas. This is injustice," Opadokun said. http://www.lasgidionline.com.ng/2016/06/june-12-nigeria-owes-abiola-viable.html

By Tony Ogunlowo It’s very good that the governor of Ekiti state, Governor Fayose, can take time out from his busy schedule to feed the people of his state, handing out bags of rice and other edibles to the needy as part of his ‘stomach infrastructure’ programme. We all need to eat or we will cease to exist! While his humanitarian efforts, to make sure everybody eats, is highly commendable one ought to point out to the governor that if you feed a man a fish a day you’ll end up feeding him for the rest of his life. Whereas if you teach him how to fish not only will he be able feed himself and his family but others too. Some might say this equates to food- stamps or welfare enjoyed by some in Western nations. But with the current economic climate in Nigeria today it’s an exercise that is neither sustainable nor affordable. Money currently being wasted on the ‘stomach infrastructure’ programme would be better spent on creating employment for the poor he’s currently feeding. Governor Fayose is an outstanding and outspoken governor in Nigeria and everything he does is commendable. In a country where there is no viable opposition government he has bravely stood up to PMB querying his every policy and move – very few politicians in PDP do this. Recently he took the time and effort to write to the Chinese government to try and block a development loan PMB was trying to negotiate with them. He even went to China himself to try and talk to the government, there, out of helping Nigeria in its dire hour of need. The Governor and Ekiti state go back a long way to 2003 when he first became governor( and subsequently impeached) to the present day. In the years since he has been at the helm of affairs the state, itself, has barely moved forward. Salaries still remain unpaid, election promises unfulfilled, stories of widespread corruption and election-rigging are still abound. It’s alright to be a showman if the circumstances are right – feeding the poor, hanging out with market-women, fraternizing with danfo drivers , checking vehicles particulars and admonishing late civil-servants – if you’re an egomaniac, attention seeking person like Donald Trump. An elected governor of a state is a very busy person and without any doubt I believe the people of Ekiti state would like to see more accountability and less showmanship. Or as the Yorubas would say – ‘ put your home in order first before condemning someone elses’. It’s alright to criticise the central government (i.e – the Federal Government) if your own house is in order. Charity, they say, begins at home. Progress in the Ekiti state, right now, is rather crawling backwards to the Stone Age rather than forward. The Office of the Governor of any state is an esteemed position and the incumbent is a servant to the people who voted him into office. It’s a demanding job as the governor is responsible for the well-being of his citizens, upkeep of the state, implementing policies that will benefit the state, not just in the interim but in the future and ensuring there is law and order and accountability. It’s certainly not a platform for one to illegally enrich oneself or become a showman. A governor of a state has to think about the bigger picture instead of resorting to cheap publicity stunts. So for the aforementioned it’s time to quit the Donald-Trump-Style-Political-Showmanship and get some actual work done! Files must be piling up on his desk by now! http://www.lasgidionline.com.ng/2016/06/the-myth-of-ekiti-state-governor-ayo.html Lalasticlala |

Rising from the monthly Security Council Meeting which involved heads of all security agencies in the state chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the Government urged residents to willfully comply with the extant laws in the state to make the enforcement of the law easier. Briefing Government House Correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, urged the public to desist from patronizing traders especially where street trading is not allowed. Owoseni also counseled Lagosians to stop patronizing commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada operators on routes where the law restricts them from plying. Owoseni, who briefed journalists alongside heads of the Army, Navy, Airforce and other security agencies in state, said: “The Council appraised the security situation in the state and looked at the challenges we are still having and from discussions and conclusions that were made, the Council agreed that lot of progress had been made. “We have covered lot of miles regarding security and safety in the state. For now, the State is relatively peaceful. “We want to sustain that tempo; we want to improve on that tempo. We have looked at those areas we need to improve upon and basically those were the issues the Council considered,” Owoseni said. When asked on the directive by Governor Ambode at the Town Hall Meeting in Ikorodu last week that Okada should not ply Mile 12-Ikorodu route, the Commissioner said: “Yes, we deliberated on that and I can tell you that we specifically considered the need to improve on enforcement of the laws of the state, especially the areas where we have been having challenges with members of the public with regard to enforcement. “Specifically, I’m talking about the street trading, the restriction of commercial motorcyclists to certain areas. You see, there is need to have the buy-in of members of the public in all these and the Council considered the need for us to still tell the citizens that in as much as we want to enforce, there is also need for members of the public to willfully comply with extant laws of the State. “When they comply and conform to the laws, it will be easier for security agencies to enforce. Where the law says there should not be street trading, people should not patronize street traders; where the law says Okada should not ply certain routes, people should not patronize commercial motorcyclists in those areas. “But most importantly, as the Security Council has always emphasized, there is need for everyone to be security conscious and raise awareness about security in their surroundings,” Owoseni said. http://www.lasgidionline.com.ng/2016/04/lagos-state-government-vows-to-go-tough.html lalasticlala |

The Governor, while unveiling the new LWT logo at the Combo Hall, LTV grounds, Agidingbi, also charged the operators to ride on the crest of technological development to enhance socio-economic development and empowerment of the people. The unveiling of the rebirth of LWT revived the golden era of television broadcasting of the 80s. The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tunji Bello, also urged the management of the media outfit to harness the benefits of the global knowledge and entertainment bank to drive the process. While reiterating the belief of the present administration that the power of electronic broadcast particularly television should be properly harnessed for the day to day running of state affairs, Governor Ambode urged the management staff of the media house to air programmes that would engage the public and enhance economic development. “We want to assure Lagosians that our government will not leave anything to chance in the quest to keep you at pace with information as they emanate. “It is important to reiterate at this point that our government is very convinced about the need to constantly bring residents up to speed about what is new in terms of information communication between us and every stakeholder in the Lagos project. “We believe that without effective information dissemination machinery like LTV/LWT, our people will be kept in the dark and when that happens, the public tend to misinterpret the lofty ideas of government, no matter how commendable they are”, the Governor said. He paid glowing tribute to the First Executive Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande under whose administration the Lagos Television was conceived and delivered. Governor Ambode also recalled very vividly as a young boy growing up in Lagos how the theme song of the LWT heralded the commencement of non-stop weekend entertainment for every household in an era when ownership of video playing equipment was not widespread. Earlier in his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde reiterated the determination of the Ambode administration to reposition LTV as the station of first choice, assuring that the present administration would build on the vision of the pioneers of the station. Ayorinde said:”The administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode sees Lagos Television beyond the pedestrian appreciation of a state-owned TV station established to merely educate, inform and entertain. “Rather, the administration sees the state broadcasting stations as veritable tools for social mobilization, reformation and re-orientation. “They are thus part of the state apparatus for achieving the all-important desire of running an all-inclusive government that constantly engages the mass of the people so that we can all key into the vision of the government,” Ayorinde said. The event attracted the first civilian Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, some members of the State Executive Council, notables from the broadcast industry and regulators including the Zonal Director, National Broadcasting Commission, Mrs. Bunmi Cole and the Executive Secretary, Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, Mr. Segun Olaleye, among others.
