The crisis rocking the Benue State House of Assembly yesterday deepened as a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, Kester Kyenge, was handed a five months suspension.

The House on Tuesday witnessed a rowdy session following the Speaker’s refusal to allow the purportedly suspended member representing Logo State Constituency, to move a motion of Urgent Public Importance.

Kester and other 14 PDP members had insisted that the Speaker, Terkimbi Ikyange, and other principal officers should resign their positions for “desecrating and bringing shame” upon the Assembly following allegations of fraud under investigation by Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

But the House during today’s plenary session, slammed suspension on Kyenge for what it described as, “unruly behaviour and dishing out falsehood against the leadership of the Assembly with the intention to tarnish the image of the entire Assembly.”

The suspension was however sequel to a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Barr. Benjamin Adanyi, in which he drew the House attention to media reports credited to Kyenge where he alleged that the leadership misappropriated huge sums of monies meant for the purchase of vehicles for the lawmakers.

Reacting to the suspension, the House Minority leader, Audu Sule, said that Kyenge was not given a fair hearing and that the standing rule of the House which provided only 14-day suspension for members was breached.

“Therefore the suspension is null and void. That action would not be respected by anybody,” Sule said.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday commissioned a newly reconstructed Police Station in Ikosi-Isheri area of the State, just as he said that every the investment made towards the protection of lives and properties of the citizens of the State is worthwhile regardless of the resources spent in achieving such feat.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who said that the construction and delivery of a modern Police Station in Isheri was very central and conspicuously positioned, added that the importance attached to security of lives and properties in the State since he assumed office was informed by the belief that business activities could only thrive in a safe and secured environment.

“We believe that the continued prosperity of our State can only be achieved under a well-secured and peaceful environment, hence our strong financial investment on security architecture, modern equipment, vehicles and welfare to enhance the fighting capacities of our security agencies,” the Governor said.

The Governor, represented at the event by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Seye Oladejo, also underscored the importance of adequately policing Isheri being a border town to Lagos and the need to redouble efforts by men of the force to make sure that the peace and orderliness presently being enjoyed in the area is not threatened in any form.

“The government and the people of Lagos State can attest to the resounding successes that officers and men of the security agencies have recorded in the quest and determination to secure our lives,” the Governor said.

The Governor however sought for increased vigilance from residents of the State while also urging security officers to re-double their efforts in nipping in the bud the antics of kidnappers, abductors, cultists, gangsters and other crimes that are rearing up again in recent times.

On his part, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area H, Aliyu Garba , promised to ensure that the Police Station is well manned and positioned to provide improved security service delivery and maintain law and order.

“With this great achievement, I can authoritatively state that Isheri Police Division Headquarters is ready and determined to fight back those that seek to breach the peace within its environs” The Commissioner of Police added.

Owoseni appreciated the community/state collaboration and contribution of the Community Development Areas, CDAs as well as the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC for initiating the commencement of the construction of the Police Station before the intervention of the State Government.

Also speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Sole Administrator of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Aremo Adewale Abdul, appreciated the gesture of the State Government and assured that the Council will do all within its resources to maintain the facility.

The traditional ruler of Isheri- Ikosi area, Albert Olubankole, lauded the support of the State Government to the community, asserting that his domain had since ceased to be haven for criminals since the police station became operational.

The monarch warned residents of the area to desist from perpetrating unscrupulous acts that may pitch them against law.

The burial of former Super Eagles captain and Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, who died on June 8th has been slated for July 29th at his hometown, Illah in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. According to the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Patrick Ukah who is a member of the Keshi burial committee,‎ Keshi's funeral ceremony will commence on Thursday July 28th and end on Sunday July 31st.

The funeral would kick off in Edo State on Thursday July 28th with a requiem mass at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin-City, from 9:00 am, followed by lying in state at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, also in Benin-City, by 11:00am.

There will also be a novelty match by All Stars as well as a session of tributes in honour of the late soccer star at the stadium.

“The same day, his remains will depart Benin-City for Asaba, Delta State, from 1:15pm. On arrival, there will be lying in state ceremony at Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Indoor Hall, Asaba, from 3:15pm, followed by a novelty match by All Stars and Tributes at Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba, from 3:30pm”Ukah said The service of songs/vigil Mass will the same day hold at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Illah, by 6:00pm, according to the obsequies release. On Friday, July 29th, his body will leave Asaba for his hometown, Illah by ‎7am.

There will be a lying in state at his family home, Ukpologwu Quarters, Illah, from 8:30am. A‎ Requiem Mass will take place at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Illah, by 10:00am followed by interment at his family compound, Ukpologwu Quarters, Illah, from 12:30pm.

A thanksgiving will be held at the Evangelist Catholic Church, Illah on Sunday July 31st.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation has concluded plans to set up a renewable energy plant that would use agro products to generate energy.

Its Group General Manager in charge of Renewable Energy Division, Mr Rabiu Suleiman, stated this on Tuesday during a courtesy call on Governor Samuel Ortom. Suleiman said the project, which would cost about $300 million, would be financed through joint partnership with foreign partners.

He said the corporation had already secured technical partners that were ready to support the project.

Rabiu said the decision to diversify energy generation from existing sources to agricultural products was conceived by the Federal Government in 2005 but had been in the pipeline. He said that the incumbent administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had already taken initiatives to begin the diversification programme.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Tuesday met with hundreds of street traders at Rumuodomanya, Rumuokoro and Okoronuodo communities of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, with the pledge that he will build new markets to relocate them.

Governor Wike pledged that the action is for the safety of the traders because they are exposed to danger as they trade on the busy expressway.

He said: "I am here to personally talk to you because I know the level of support I got from the markets during the last elections. Therefore, all my actions are geared towards improving the environment where you do business.

"I know that you are on the road to seek your daily upkeep. But it should not be at the expense of other road users and your own wellbeing."
The governor stated that the street traders along Rumuodomanya Road will be moved to a location provided by the community. He said the new market will be ready in two months.

The governor informed that the area where the street traders cluster will be fenced off for the easy flow of traffic. He added that the former location for street trading will also be beautified.

At Rumuokoro and Okoronuodo, the governor also promised to construct markets at locations provided by the two communities.
He called on the traders to continue to support his administration, pointing out that he will always protect their interest.

The governor also visited the motor park at Rumuokoro, which has been taken over by the State Government .

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, today placed order for 20 tricycles assembled by a state indigine, Mr Stine Chenge, in Gboko.

He placed the order at the Benue Peoples House today when Mr Chenge presented one of the vehicles to him.

The Governor stated that the order was a demonstration of his support for the initiative which he urged other youths to emulate.

According to him, his administration was committed to collaborating with indigenes and other partners who had creative ideas that could contribute to the development of the state.

He expressed hope that the order would enable Mr Chenge to produce more of the cycles and also venture into more production of the brand.

Making the presentation, Mr Chenge stated that he came up with the idea to make the tricycles which he named Wazobiakeke so that transportation could be more affordable to farmers in the rural areas in support of the agricultural program of the Ortom administration.

He said he chose to use available and commonly used motorcycles so that users could readily find the spare parts and repairers.

Mr Chenge stated that the cost ranged from N270, 000 according to the number purchased.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Ibrahim K. May his soul rest in peace

His Lordship, Bishop Emeritus Athanasius Atule Usuh passed on today in a private hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness.

His life:

Born to the family of the late Pa Joseph Usuh Anachi and Mama Edna Hilemo Usuh of Mbatyough, Mbagen in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, Bishop Usuh was born on 2nd May, 1942. His mother gave birth to eleven children of whom Bishop Usuh was the second born – all of whom are now deceased except the bishop’s younger brother, Emmanuel Ishosen Usuh.

His achievements:

Since he took over the leadership of the Makurdi Diocese twenty-five years ago, there has been phenomenal growth of the Church in that part of Nigeria: the increase in the number of Catholics evident in the number of priests and bishops ordained, dioceses created and the many young people in the seminaries. During these twenty-five years, we witnessed the creation of Otukpo, Lafia, Gboko and Katsina-Ala Dioceses, with the following as bishops: the late Bishop Fidelis Ogah, Bishops Matthew Audu, Michael Apochi, William Avenya and Peter Adoboh.

His burial details will be announced by the church soon.

May his soul rest in peace.

Armenia's all time goalscorer Henrikh Mkhitaryan has now officially joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal.

The 27 year old made 140 appearances and scored 41 goals for Borussia Dortmund after joining them in 2013 and last season scored 23 goals and registered an impressive 32 assists across all competitions.Henrikh was voted Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2015/16 in a poll of his fellow professionals, and he was named in the Team of the Season following votes by the players’ union in Germany. The midfielder is Armenia’s all-time top scorer, with 19 goals in 59 appearances since his international debut in January 2007. Henrikh captains his national team and has received the Armenian Footballer of the Year award on five occasions.
