Day 5 *Two issues you should know about*

By Seyi Oladeji MBA, M.Inf.Sci,PMP,CISA, COBIT5

Yesterday's PM webinar ended few minutes to 10pm.

I was particularly please that we had finally finished the fundamentals of Project Management and moving to the meat of the matter.

Processes and their ITTOs [Inputs, Tools & Techniques and Outputs], Knowledge Areas, Process Groups are fundamentals concepts we have extensively thrashed & dusted at this point in the class.

As usual, the class was interesting and 2 stories stand out.

=> Are process groups the same as Project Phases?

It is my teaching style not to make assumptions about my students' understanding of fundamental principles.

As I usually do at this point, I decided to throw in an innocent-looking question - "In managing a project, are Process Groups the same as Project Phases?"

Na so opinions start to rise and fall.

Mission accomplished, I was simply testing how solid the foundation was before moving on. Interestingly, for this class, the discussion was even milder [i encourage a lot of collaboration in my classes].

At the end, they eventually came to an agreement that the correct position is that they are different. In my usual style, I did not stop there, you must explain why.

Essentially, Project Phases are "cut-out" sections of a full project for various reasons. The point here is that a phase would be handled as though it is a Project on its own with all Process Groups running through it from Initiating down to Closing.

Let me not bore you anymore.

I have a 6mins class audio excerpt that explains this.
I can get it sent to you on Whatsapp [+2349099576339]

=>Project Charter

You cannot talk about projects without talking about the Project Charter. It brings a project into existence and assigns/authorizes a Project Manager.

No Project Charter, No Project!!

A number of analogies came up while we were explaining this in class.

The first is the analogy of the MACE in the House of Assembly. It is a symbol of authority for the House. [As I was told,] The House is practically powerless without it. So is the project without the Charter.

Another interesting one is the analogy of Someone in a University. No matter the number of years you use on campus, you are not a student if you have not been matriculated. Without this, you are just a random dude strolling around University ground.

Such is the fundamental importance of a Project Charter.

It is best issued as a written document. It contains Cost and Schedule goals, Project Justification, Project High-level requirements, High-level risks, Assumptions, Constraints and more.

Let me stop here.

Bye.

A project has 4 major characteristics;
1. Has a specific purpose. 2. Creates specific & unique results. 3. Has a definite start and finish date. 4. Is temporary 5. Can be progressively Elaborated

Day 2: "Nothing is Particularly Hard (to accomplish) if You Divide it into Small Jobs"

By Seyi Oladeji

_MBA, M.Inf.Sci,PMP,CISA, COBIT5_

Yesterday's session had an interesting mix of stories and analogies. Though I am quoting Henry Ford (1863-1947), an American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor company, this concept did not originate from him.

From the beginning of time, dividing things up and managing from the components have been a core principle of nearly everything. As I normally chant in my trainings, "never manage a big thing as a big thing, break things down!"

In an earlier training cohort, a participant brought an interesting dimension to this principle.

Warning: you might not like this...

God Almighty, from the various scriptural sources created creation in a structured way. Almighty as He is, He could have decided to bring forth the heavens and earth in a single day but in His infinite wisdom decided to stagger this action. He is probably teaching all of creation an important lesson.
Respect:man-bowing:

This pattern is evident all around us; look at knowledge/education, organizations, government etc
We even went ahead to discuss how this relates to personal effectiveness.

How does this relate to Project Management?

Managing projects is complex and could be overwhelming. The only way to simplify is to break it down.

_There is no 1 THING that is an embodiment of project management._

You would be doing lot of bits and pieces of tasks and activities of different kinds. Luckily for us, the experts have standardized these into various bodies of knowledge. According to Project Management Institute (in PMBOK6), there are 49 processes that should/could be carried out as part of managing a project.

These processes are categorized around 2 broad themes:

- PROCESS GROUPS: based on the project stage in which the process is carried out (from Initiating to Closing)

- KNOWLEDGE AREAS: based on the core nature of the processes themselves (Cost, Risk, Stakeholder etc)

An interesting "may-i-never-forget" analogy was used in class to explain this. Let me not bore you 'jare'. :upside_down_face:

Understanding the concepts of project management processes, process groups and knowledge areas is a fundamental basis for all we would be discussing afterward. We spend sufficient time thrashing this.

Oops, this is getting too long already, I would have given us an overview of what we discussed about *proactivity*, the hallmark of a Professional Project Manager.

These and much more are being thrashed in this unique training to digest:tomato: project management knowledge, blow up managerial capacity:bomb: and blast the PMP exam.:boom:

Day 1: The WHY of Project Management (PM)

By Oladeji Seyi Hybee10x _ MBA, M.Inf.Sci, PMP, CISA, COBIT5_

8:30pm yesterday, another cohort of the PM2Grandma Mega-Online Class started, with much excitement and vigour.

It was the first class in our e-journey, we started by briefly introducing ourselves to ourselves and to the concept of project management itself.
In our usual collaborative way, we all took turns to express our idea of PM. Interesting points and personal experiences were expressed by the various ‘big n high’ men and women in class from various countries. I was awed!

PMP certification or not; the knowledge of project management would go a long way in structuring numerous unstructured approaches to many areas of your personal and business life. With the knowledge of project management, you become a better leader, coordinator, facilitator, goal setter, manager of limited resources among other benefits. Essentially, you signal to your colleagues and employer that you are ready for bigger profile!

Yes, we might be getting some form of results in our current endeavors. If you have been this lucky, thank God but know that this is not enough. You should strive to get the right result while ensuring you are efficient and effective about use of resources (cost, time, materials etc), carrying the right people along and more!

The ‘Why’ of project management can be summarized around the following themes: Taming Chaos, Managing Risk, Managing Quality, Managing Integration, Clearing Issues, Maximizing Resources, Managing Change and Managing Knowledge.
Each of the items above are huge worlds with copious explanations.

These and more would be extensively thrashed in this unique training to Digest Project Management Knowledge, Blow up Managerial Capacity and Blast the PMP Exam.

Expect more updates and feel free to ask questions..

Islam for Muslims / Re: In The Mosque This Morning, After Morning Prayers, Something Happened. by iboladeji: 5:29pm On Mar 16, 2018
Farmerforlife:

The whole purpose of the health talk and the subsequent 'free test' smacks of a set up for commercial activities. The advertising started from the mosque. Trade does not only refer to the physical exchange of goods and payment. Inviting people or attracting their attention to the market set up outside the mosque, while they were still inside the mosque is still part of 'selling'. Allah is not deceived by our feeble attempts at 'playing smart' with His commands.

Sure, though, intention matters a lot.

iboladeji:
In the mosque this morning, after morning prayers, something happened.

Just after the tesleem, the ’salaam aleikum wa rahmatullaahi...’, the Imam introduced a young man. He referred to him as a health practitioner who had a message for us.
I lifted my curious eyes to see who that person was who wanted to disturb my planned-by-the-second post morning prayer ritual. I decided to use Stephen Covey’s 5th principle in his popular book, “seek first to understand”, i listened.

The young man introduced himself and gave the pre-talk Islamic intro in a rather “paparazzi” manner. I was like, ok, lets hear him out for few more minutes. Then he proceeded to talk about health issues; what we eat, drink and how most of us are the architect of our own gradual destruction from the way we live our lives.

He talked about how most of our foods are from the dangerous starchy background combo of cassava and yam. Someone from the audience was quick to fire him that was that not what our “fathers” used to eat and they lived good lives. The young man was quick to reply with a subtle missile of comparing our daily rituals with that of our “fathers”. How our “fathers” used to burn off all the extra cholesterol and fat with serious rigor.

It made a lot of sense to me, knowing the sedentary lives of we “techy” people and the massive ijekuje we eat just because we do not want to take our gaze away from the screen. I let off my guard pata pata and stopped the stop watch in my mind.

At the end of his talk, he announced that a stand had been set up just behind the mosque for free medical checkup. I was smart enough not to rush at that, i waited in the mosque calmly till everyone had done theirs then i was called upon. I wondered why, because i did not signify interest. The reason revealed itself later.

I went out and did the tests. Then came the koko.
They came up with a number of paid “products” (they said they are not drugs) for me to use to get my health status better.

I looked up and saw many other people buying and buying. Of course, you would not ignore key health signals.

This got me thinking.
There is something these guys know about marketing that most startups/businesses do not.
Let me borrow from Nir Eyal’s hooked model. Who says the model does not apply to marketing too, some how!

These guys obviously got the congregation with the health talk. Who hates health talks? Trigger, right?
The investment phase came in from the time we had given to him, listening, and the free checkup that came after. Finally, the action to be taken was to buy from them. A catch here, below.

A key lesson to hustlers like me is for us to realize that few people win by jumping on their prospective customers. You need to cuddle, pet and give lots of value in the hope of getting a fraction of that back.

PS: My head is hard, i did not buy from them!

Jazaakumulloohu khayran for the interesting comments and contributions. I strongly agree with you on the position of commercial activities in the mosque. Please note that the marketers in this narration DID NOT sell in the mosque.

While i do not particularly buy into this mode of mosque-marketing technique, it might not be adjudged to be prohibited as what occurred in the mosque itself was not buying and selling. These guys came with a free health talk that benefited us all tremendously. Then a fraction of the congregation went outside the mosque for the free test and then a smaller fraction bought from them OUTSIDE.
Nothing prohibits having a market AROUND a mosque.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Friday Message: Did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Marry A Child? by iboladeji: 8:55pm On Mar 05, 2015
onetrack:

My training and my work are in the field of history so I hope I have some historical perspective of events.

I can agree with much of what you wrote. Of course Muslims are not obligated to marry a child just because Muhammad did. Every religion adapts itself to the culture of the time (obviously the Salafists would disagree with that). A Muslim being against child marriage is kind of like a Christian being against slavery: there is no clear religious basis to be against either one and there are specific passages in the holy scriptures permitting them, but few people (such as atheists grin ) would call a Christian out for being against slavery when the Bible permits it.

Christians should also be against almost all divorce and loaning money at interest, but you know how that works--there's always away around such rules. Regarding Islam, there are other things to criticize and I think that focusing on things other than the age of Aisha is more interesting.

Briefly, let me point out another error.
Every religion adapts itself to the culture of the time (obviously the Salafists would disagree with that).
This is not wholly correct. Referring you back to a previous post
In Islamic law, issues are divided into two: Religious and Mundane. We are bound to follow the Prophet in religious issues. In mundane issues, everyone is free to follow what he or his current society deems right.
Of course, you do not see Muslims riding horses and camels; you do not see Muslims living in deserts nor do you see Muslims wearing izhar (ancient Arab wrapper). These are mundane issues which are not legislated by Islam, rather, regulated. But in religious issues, they are both legislated and regulated. We HAVE TO pray the same way He prayed, fast the same way He fasted, on and on...
Cultural issues only come into play in MUNDANE aspects of Islam. In religious aspects, you have no room for guesswork e.g A Chinese Muslim dare not pray/fast... differently from a Kanuri Muslim. Except for heretics of course.
Also, salafists and other adjectives are just names used to cause confusion. The religious rules are clear, those that follow strictly do and some decide to innovate. Muslim na Muslim, but quality differs based on conformity to dictates.
